My short story "Stop Requested" is included in this anthology, but I am going to pretend it is not there and review the rest of the book.
Frankly, I was stunned. This is an amazing anthology and each story is fantastic. Though there are a few well-known names in this tome, some of the newbie authors (with their first publication credit ever) really knock it out of the park. They bring a unique, fresh voice to the zombie genre. In fact, two of my favorite stories (that gave me nightmares) are by first time published authors.
What can you expect from this tome of zombie goodness?
The absolute best zombie stories. I love this book and I will be reading it again!
I'm just going to brag here for a minute on this book. My first published piece, a short story called "Every Rose" is in it. Yes, it is a small, independent press, but the stories in this book are amazing! My favorite, so far (besides my own, snicker snicker) has been "Stop Requested" by Rhiannon Frater. She told me she had a lot of fun writing it, and I can tell! I recommend this book to anyone who loves the zombie genre - you will not be disappointed! It is available for purchase through Amazon, and Target.com via Amazon.
Its typically difficult for me to actually review an anthology. I don't like to delve too deeply into one particular story because I would do so to the detriment of the other tales in the book which also captured my attention. In this book it would really be unfair because so many of these stories were so creative and fun that focusing on one in particular just isn't possible. From the short story that cries to be fleshed out into a full sized novel to the self-contained punch you in the mouth tidbit, this book is packed with a great cross section of new zombie tales from authors I have seen plenty of before to some new folks. Though not all of the stories resonated with me on the same level my belief is that if you love zombie fiction you will find more than enough here to make you feel as if this book was well worth the investment. I do love the traditional zombie tale: a basic life and death struggle with death, and un-death, seemingly unstoppable. There are plenty of the traditional tales here along with a wide array of the unexpected and creative that demanded as much of my attention and appreciation as the more traditional stuff. Sorry, but I cannot give a preference for a favorite story. Too many stuck with me long after I was done reading this book. Lets just say I have more than one favorite to choose from in this collection and I would bet you will to.
There are lots of short stories in this anthology that would make better and more interesting full-length novels than many of the existing zombie novels. Most of the stories in here are unique and original, and it would be awesome to see some of them taken further and turned into a longer story. Only a couple don't stand out, and many of the stories are written by awesome authors who already have good books out, like Rhiannon Frater and Eric S. Brown.
I enjoyed this book very much. There were several stories that I enjoyed so much I was sad that it ended and will most definitely look into those authors and other works. Some of the stories were very predictable, but still enjoyable and there were a couple that I had to skip over entirely. I would definitely suggest zombie fans to read this book.
