Jane Jameson #3

Nice Girls Don't Live Forever

Rate this book
Nothing sucks the romance out of world travel like a boyfriend who may or may not have broken up with you in a hotel room in Brussels. Jane Jameson’s sexy sire, Gabriel, has always been unpredictable. But the seductive, anonymous notes that await him at each stop of their international vacation, coupled with his evasive behavior over the past few months, finally push Jane onto the next flight home to Half Moon Hollow — alone, upset, and unsure whether Gabriel just ended their relationship without actually telling her.

Now the children’s librarian-turned-vampire is reviving with plenty of Faux Type O, some TLC from her colorful friends and family, and her plans for a Brave New Jane. Step One: Get her newly-renovated occult bookstore off the ground. Step Two: Support her best friend, Zeb, and his werewolf bride as they prepare for the impending birth of their baby . . . or litter. Step Three: Figure out who’s been sending her threatening letters, and how her hostile pen pal is tied to Gabriel. Because for this nice girl, surviving a broken heart is becoming a matter of life and undeath...

Completely loving the Jane Jameson series set in Half Moon Hollow. As this starts out, Jane and Gabriel are off in Europe for some much-needed alone time, but Gabriel, who has been mysteriously disappearing for weeks at a time over the course of the last two books, begins receiving strange letters at every hotel they arrive in. So once again he pulls his vanishing act and won’t tell Jane the truth about what’s going on.

I rather enjoy the push/pull between Jane and Gabriel. Jane doesn’t take any nonsense, and although Gabriel may be an expert in all things vampire, he’s a bit of a novice in how to have a relationship with anyone, and that makes their interactions that much better. I loved the way the mystery behind why he’s been disappearing and hiding things from Jane finally came to a head, as well as the further development of the relationships between Jane and her family members. So many cool things in this book!

Oh no! A vampire break-up? Vampires are angsty enough without the break-up drama, so this was gunna be gud!

"I hope all your books keep you warm at night!" he yelled, stomping toward the door.

"Hey, you're room temperature at best, buddy. You never kept me that warm to begin with!" I shouted back.

Sing it, sister!!

Jane is awesome in this one as she deals with Gabriel being an ass. She doesn't get all clingy, she doesn't go into a deep depression, she doesn't try to win him back. Nope. She stands up for herself and tells him to shove it where the sun don't shine. Have I mentioned how much I like her? Okay, maybe a few times.

But, the best part of this book is Dick. Yup, a vampire named Dick Cheney is my favorite character. He is awesomely inappropriate, good looking, and has a questionable character. Much like the real Dick Cheney.

okay, maybe he wasn't all bad...

Dick decides to take Jane out to deal with her break-up feelings in the "guy way". This involves getting drunk, not talking about it, and getting into a bar fight. It was perfect.

Dick: "You're the sister I never really wanted."

Man, that's sweet! No wonder a sweet-talker like him gets all the ladies.

Aside from the break-up, there is more family angst, Jane opening her new & improved vampire bookstore, and some very creepy crap going on at the Chamber of Commerce. It has been taken over by a bunch of perky blondes named Courtney. They are all named Courtney. Jane joined to help her business but didn't realize that it was more like a cult of over-achieving soccer moms. They give demerits out every time Jane disappoints them. She's not exactly sure what that means, but she's getting a lot of them.

"I'm not trying to say anything about sisterhood or women in power, but what a bunch of bitches!"

Yeah, I like Jane.

Another very good installment from Molly Harper's "Nice Girls Don't..." series. An intelligent and witty book about vampires, ghouls, werewolves, ghosts and maybe even witches. Never thought I'd be describing a book about vampires as intelligent and witty.

4.5 Stars! It just keeps getting better

It’s like a sitcom in my ears!! Filled with funny, heartwarming scenes, this book is a winner! Jane and Gabriel work out their problems…love, love, love Gabriel...and they move forward in their relationship. Jolene and Zeb, await the birth of their children and deal with her overbearing werewolf family…and Jane intervenes on their behalf, and with all her new vamp power…watch out! But hands down my favorite moments involve Jane and Richard ‘Dick’ Cheney. He’s Gabriel’s longtime nemesis and friend (it’s a long story), Andrea’s boyfriend…love Andrea too, and Jane’s new smack-down partner! Dick and Jane…even that cracks me up.

“You did all this for me?” I laughed.

He shrugged. “You feel better, right?”

I thought about it for a second and realized that I did. That beating the tar out of a Bruce Springsteen fan with poor attention to detail had made me feel better than all the liquor and ice cream and Bette Midler in the world. “I sort of love you, Dick.”

“While my heart and all my other parts belong to a certain adorable redhead, I love you, too, Stretch,” he said, giving my shoulder a brief squeeze. “You’re the sister I never really wanted.”

Wonder if this was the inspiration for the idea of Dick and Jane!!

This book touched a soft spot in my heart and Jane’s sexy times with Gabriel, left me panting!! Molly Harper’s humor never feels forced or cheesy. I’m constantly chuckling, sometimes wheezing with laughter, and as the words fade away…always left smiling!

Bravo to Amanda Ronconi’s brilliant narration!! She is a one woman show in my ears…I love her!

Audio Book Review

The Story:

Nice Girls Don’t Live Forever is the third book in Molly Harper’s Jane Jameson series, which is a cross between Contemporary and Paranormal Romance, with the slightest hint of Chick-lit.

As is always the case with Molly Harper, the storytelling is brilliant. My earlier slight disappointment in the world building is gone, and this story is romantic, funny, sexy, fast paced, and at times poignant. The story takes place in the quirky small town of Half Moon Hollow where vampires have been ‘out of the closet’ for a while now, and share the air with humans, ghouls, witches, ghosts, and werewolves. Makes for some interesting reading!!

The Audio:

Amanda Ronconi does a phenomenal job of bringing Jane Jameson and her friends to life. Her voice is just rough enough to give Jane the edge you'd expect from a sassy vampire, as well as give all of the characters truly distinctive voices. I love that I know who's speaking without the "Jane said..." or "Jolene said..." Honestly, Ms. Ronconi is a very talented narrator!

Once again I can wholeheartedly recommend this amazing author/narrator team!

Angsty vampires are...well, angsty.

This book seemed shorter and a quicker read than the disappointing second. Not sure why, since there wasn't non-stop action or anything, but it was more enjoyable. There is a small background of danger and mystery throughout most of the story, focusing on an issue of doubt Jane is having with her sire Gabriel. I must say I was surprised when the villains were unveiled at the end. Unrealistic one of them wouldn't have been noticed, very, but with this kind of plotline it's excusable.

Amidst this disaster, Jane deals with trying to join the local community charter and wiggle her way into promotion for the newly opened bookshop. Hilarity and confrontation ensues. There is the meddling of Jane's family one loves to hate, accompanied by the funniest situations of Jolene and Zed's family woes. Seriously, this author writes cringe-worthy relatives.

It wasn't fast paced with tension and Jane honestly didn't seem that upset about relationship issues, but I appreciate that the author didn't have her mope most of the book. That would have just been annoying. Plenty of book and reader references kept me a happy girl. Jolene and Andrea as the buds grew on me even further, I really like both of them and what they bring to the story.

Humor again works and the author has a clear knack for bringing out giggles without seeming forced. There are one or two actual erotic moments, although the book isn't heavy on the bedroom play. Gabriel remains as dreamy as ever. Dick is funny but unrealistic.

These books are light, fluffy fun, good to consume when you don't want anything heavy.

I needed a little pick-me-up between heavy books and Jane was just the thing!

Original review

Another fun Friday night spent with Jane Jameson. I’m glad I left a few months between #2 and this installment—Jane is best enjoyed in small doses. Especially as this book tips the scales much further towards paranormal romance than to regular urban fantasy.

I do love the sass and the snark that Molly Harper channels for Jane. And Jane needs them desperately in book 3 as she deals with relationship issues, both her vampire sire/boyfriend, Gabriel and her sister. Not to mention that her best friend Zeb & his werewolf bride are expecting twins and expecting Jane to keep all the crazy relatives out of the delivery room.

I appreciated that instead of one constant melt-down about the Gabriel situation, Jane decides to get on with her life. She concentrates on her business and its promotion—with the hilarious side effect of becoming embroiled in the local Chamber of Commerce (which seems to be populated with only women named Courtney). I also loved that her friendship with Dick Cheney progresses—Dick takes her out for an evening of drinking, not-talking, and fighting, just the cure for a heartache. The Dick & Jane schtick works well.

Also loving the fact that Jane has Jolene and Andrea as BFFs and that each of them have personalities & motivations of their own within the novel. Yes, the boys still loom large, but Jane definitely has some women friends to lean on. Yay!

4 sassy stars!

The third in the series and the best so far. When I started my next book in a different, darker series I found myself missing Jane and her crazy cast of funny friends and family. In this addition someone is trying to kill Jane and there are absolutely no suspects. While characters reveal more about themselves, some things come into perspective and her belief in people's basic good nature may be returning. All of her friends and even some unexpected family members rally around her to help root out the mysterious culprit behind the attempts on her life.

A new, unwanted membership to her town's Chamber of Commerce headed up by, The Mean Girls Society, a High School reunion, where they have her on the memorial remembrance board, and the return of the Nephew of her, newly deceased, ghost boss, add hilarity to the fun and games.

Molly Harper and Amanda Ronconi do it again. IMHO, these books are right up there with her Naked Werewolf series. Fun, light entertainment at its best.

This is the third book in the Jane Jameson series and Jane has settled down somewhat into her new role as Vampire and Business Owner. The only thing she's still unsure of - is her relationship with Gabriel who continues to be secretive and aloof at times.

Jane and Gabriel decide to take a multi-country European vacation, unfortunately things aren’t going as planned. Every country they arrive in, upon checking into their hotels Gabriel has mysterious notes waiting for him upon arrival, all the while Gabriel continues to get mysterious phone calls. As their journey continues Gabriel becomes more and more withdrawn, leading a broken-hearted Jane to cut her trip short and go home.....without Gabriel.

Zeb and Jolene, Jane's BFF and his werewolf wife make me happy, these two are so much fun. I love how Jane and Jolene (and Jolene's mama Mimi) have bonded, along with Andrea, into a sisterhood of friends.

Andrea and vampire Dick Cheney, are complete opposites yet they are perfect for one another. Dick is the reprobate older brother type person to Jane, and possibly one of my favorite MH characters. He has a heart of gold hidden beneath outrageous collection of cheesy t-shirts and he has a less than legal stream of income selling knock off Knight Rider DVDs among other “irregular” merchandise. While Andrea who works in the bookstore is a classy, elegant, and a sophisticated knockout who up till now has been the only women to be unimpressed by Dick’s charming personality....and the only woman he’s ever had to work for.

There are a few surprises and twists that I didn’t see coming, once again I throughly enjoyed this installment along with all of MH’s fun quirky characters.

*Once again narrated by the very talented Amanda Ronconi.

This does prove it. I can still do pnr, but, only funny pnr. I have said it before with the Sand books, and it is true.

It was 4 years since I read the last book (I know!), but I could easily jump in even though it is about the same character. I just started reading, I did not remember a thing, and it did not matter.

Instead I learned that Jane is a vamp (well I did remember that), everyone knows about vamps now (still lots of tension). She has a hunky BF called Gabriel (the one who turned her). She used to be a librarian, now she owns a bookstore. She is sassy, and I like her. She is friends with Zeb who is expecting puppies with his were GF. Her friend Dick is a vamp and together with Angela who works at her bookstore. Oh and she has the bitchiest sister in the world!!!

The drama between her and gabriel. Sigh. Ok that was not the best part. That man must learn how to communicate. Asshat.

Then there is a relative (sort of ;) that shows up and annoys her. She joins a group, fun things there. There is a mystery and there is just, nice, fun, sarcastic. I enjoyed it

I really didn't like this book all that much. Jane is funny but she is also kind of stupid. Gabriel's big secret, the one that almost ruined his relationship because he refused to tell Jane, was ridiculous. He said he didn't want to tell her because he was protecting her and he was embarrassed and thats complete bullshit. I HATED Gabriel in this book. I know I'm in the minority because I have read a few reviews and everyone seems to love him and I'm over here like.. wtf is wrong with people.

Don't even get me started on the sex scene against the building. Gabriel hadn't talked to her in weeks, he shows up kisses her forehead and Jane forgets all about their many, many problems and lets him screw her against a wall. Oh and they both know that there is a crazy chick out there stalking Jane, taking pictures of her but that doesn't matter.

Honestly there wasn't a whole lot I enjoy about this one. Even Jane's quips couldn't save it for me. I was so annoyed with Jane and Gabriel that I couldn't enjoy the humor.

The third book in the Jane Jameson series features Jane tackling both relationship and business issues. The book still has the characteristic humor of the series, the chapter – heading quotes from A fictional vampire dating advice guide are a nice touch when paired with what happens in each individual chapter, but the plot here is a bit convoluted. Gabriel and Jane break up explosively and Jane heads back to half moon hollow to lick her wounds and run her newly reopened book shop. The rest of the book is concerned with the aftermath of that break up, change discovering the reason for Gabriels mysterious actions of the last two books, and her struggle to fit in with the chamber of commerce, which reminds her alarmingly of attempts to fit in with cheerleaders in high school. The book is still fun to read, still funny but there’s just a bit too much fit into one book. I felt like there was more than one climax in action and that made both of those points seem less potent.

Barely made 3 stars.

I dislike Gabriel & dislike his relationship with Jane. Especially the part wherein Jane doesn't seem to actually like Gabriel; the sex they have is angry sex; Gabriel keeps forcing himself onto Jane and makes classic rapists comments like: “You can lie to me, Jane, but your body can’t. I can feel how much you’ve missed me, how much you want me right now.”(said as he's pounding his fingers into her outside, in public, her bookstore. And said while licking his fingers. She has a mind blowing orgasm but also says: Hot, bloody tears spilled down my cheeks as I shouted, “Don’t come back! Don’t watch my house. Don’t come by. Don’t call me. Just stay away!”

A rather toxic relationship here.

The best way to get over a messy break-up is to spend time with a suportive group of friends. The best way to chase off a supportive group of friends is to talk constantly about your messy break-up.
--Love Bites: A Female Vampire Guide to Less
Destructive Relationships

After the disappointing second book of this series I wasn't too keen on reading this one. But it turned out to be fabulous! Jane and her boyfriend/sire is on a romantic vacation in Europe. But it turns into a messy break-up and Jane returns home. I always thought that Gabriel was a bit stuffy and I was happy to see Jane dump him and carry on with her life. Her book store is a success and she joins the Chamber of Commerce or more likely The Cult of Courtneys, to further promote it. Her ten years reunion is coming up and she has to deal with her former boss's neurotic nephew. And she's getting anonymous letters to keep her away from Gabriel.

There was far less drama from Jane's meddlesome family. Reminds me a lot about my own delusional family. Reading those scenes made me cringe. Zeb and Jolene are having twins and it's Jane's job to keep Zeb's mom away from the room. That was so hilarious! Jane is so luck to have such amazing friends. Especially Dick. He is priceless!

"I Tased Gabriel!" I blurted.
"Sweet!" Dick shouted. Andrea shot him an annoyed look. "Right, sorry." Dick tried to look remorse-stricken, but the minute Andrea's back was turned, he gave me an enthusiastic double thumbs-up.

Whenever Dick appears he out-shines every character. His scenes are the best ones!

Jane miserable and obsessive after a bad vacation with Gabriel where he may or may not have ended their relationship in a hotel room in Brussels. She travels back to Half-Moon Hollow where she vents her sob-story on her motley crew of friends. She throws herself into getting her newly renovated book store off the ground, supporting Zeb and Jolene on the impending arrival of the werewolf babies Jolene is carrying, and trying to figure out who has been sending her death threats.
The conflict in this book had me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what was going to happen, and of course Jane's unique brand of humor kept me coming back for more. I also really loved reading about Jane's renovations on the book store and how it was shaping up to be a really cool place for her and her awesome friends to hang out.

While this book failed with the romance because the hero was too MIA for me, plus with all the moping Jane did, and the doormating it was sad..

Another funny installment in this series! All of the characters just keep getting better and the main mystery/danger of this book was something I didn't expect.

I'm glad that Jane is re-connecting with her family and the whole drama with Gabriel wraps up in the second half. I would probably never be able to date someone who couldn't trust me but she does demand future trust so hopefully that happens for her. I was however proud she didn't spend too much time moping over him.

I really love reading about the bookstore and how it is doing, yes I'm a dork but I hope we hear more in the next book.

I have to admit I'm not sure why marriage is such a priority for these characters especially the immortal ones but then again I never had her mama breathing down my neck.

All of Molly Harper's books just leave me with a smile on my face....
Love all the characters in this series.... Jane is awesome and I love her relationships with all her friends Andrea, Dick, Zeb, and Janene.... liked the fact that her family came around in this book especially mom and sister.... some of the best parts of these books were when Jane was at The chamber of commerce meetings with all the Courtneys..... The only part of these books that I struggle with a little bit is the relationship between Jane and Gabriel, I just still am not sure about him, maybe I can be convinced by the end of the next book, I believe that is the last in the series....
Lastly I have to acknowledge the fact that Molly harper has a fabulous narrator narrating almost all of her books on audio, I can't imagine the voice of her characters being read by anybody else...

So sad to see this series end. I enjoyed the laugh out loud moments. The hilarious wit from the previous books continued in this book as well despite the nasty situation Jane was in. I cracked up so many times reading this book, and I love the author's ability to make light of even the worst predicaments, so that you don't feel like you are reading something unhappy. MH did a wonderful job of wrapping up this one, with no loose ends. Which makes me worry that rumor to number 4 is nothing but a rummor and this may be her last.

*review contains spoilers*

I have to say that this third book in the Jane Jameson series is the best so far. Jane Jameson, a newly turned vampire (a year ago) goes to Europe on vacation with her sire/love Gabriel whom she first met in book 1 (Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs) after she was fired from her small town's library as the children's librarian. Only given a coupon for potato skins instead of a last paycheck, Jane goes and get trashed while talking to a handsome stranger (Gabriel). She leaves the restaurant alone, but has car problems and is accidentally shot (mistaken for a deer by the town drunk). Gabriel happens to come by and save her. Through the first two books Jane adjusts to life as a vampire and her relationship with Gabriel only to have it incredibly strained in this book. He keeps receiving cryptic notes and phone calls throughout their trip to Europe and will not tell Jane what is going on. Jane can only assume the worst, Gabriel is cheating on her, with someone from his past. Jeanine. Jane goes back home when she learns that there was a break-in at her newly inherited and renovated occult bookstore called "Specialty Books." Which carries everything from the latest PNR to the titles of helping the supernatural cope with everyday life. Andrea (a friend and human) helps Jane at the store along with her vampire friend, a good looking, up to no good man, named Dick Chaney. Things start to get weird for Jane when a creepy human descendant (Emery) of her deceased boss arrives and is nosy about the store's expansion, inventory, bank account, etc. Jane starts receiving cryptic letters from this woman who tells Jane that she was a childe of Gabriel's and that they were lovers and Jane needs to stay away. Zeb and Jolene (Zeb's new bride who happens to werewolf) are expecting twins. Attempts where made on Jane's life, Gabriel comes back into the picture and starts being honest with Jane about who Jeanine is. A selfish hypocondriac from the 1950's who was his first childe. He was forced into changing her against his will and certainly against his better judgement. She was never a lover, but believed that Gabriel didn't turn her properly and was holding out, so she continuously stalked Gabriel to try and change his mind. Even if that meant hurting Jane and her friends. Andrea is kidnapped on Halloween from the store. Jane is attacked by the newly turned Emery, who worships Jeanine and her every move. He is convinced that a book his uncle had in the store when he was a child contained information to help Jeanine be turned again properly. She is then kidnapped only to come face to face with Jeanine, she takes her usual sarcastic approach with Jeanine and finds out Emery changed Andrea against her will. Emery learns that everything he did has consequences. He thought being a vampire meant you had no rules. Dick and Gabriel save the day. Jeanine ends up killing herself in a stubborn childish fit when Gabriel won't do what she wants. Andrea adjusts to her new life incredibly fast, all is well. I cannot wait for the next book, I really hope there is more to this series. I really do not have any complaints for this book. It held my interest the entire time, it is definitely the best out of the series.

I am really enjoying this series; each book is funnier than the last. And Amanda Ronconi is the prefect person to bring this world and characters to life on audio. There is just enough mystery to the plots to keep you reading/listening to see who the bad guy is in each book. After reading a lot of darker books lately it’s nice to take a step back and enjoy the lightness of Harper’s world she has created in the Nice Girls series.Nice Girls Don’t Live Forever picks up not long after Nice Girls Don’t Date Dead Men ended. Jolene and Zeb are married and expecting a baby. Jane and Gabriel are still having some relationship issues. And we get a good healthy dose of my favorite character in the series, Dick.

Were as each chapter in Nice Girls Don’t Date Dead Men started with a witty quote from the book about this one has golden nuggets of wisdom from Love Bites: A Female Vampire Guide to Less Destructive Relationship.

This series has plenty of pop culture digs but I LOVE, LOVE, the reference to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and how Jane thought about finding James Marsters (aka Spike) and making him her love monkey. Because if vampires were real wouldn't we all hunt down our favorite vamp actor and turn him.
"Mmm. I wonder if it would be unethical for me to turn James Marsters and then force him to fake the accent and then make him my love monkey?"

The book starts out with Jane and Gabriel on vacation in Europe but it's not as fun or romantic as it sounds. After some mishaps, they return home and the weirdness that is Jane's life gets into full swing. There is ongoing problems with family members and some new adventures for Jane and a group of Stepford Wives that run the Chamber of Commerce in Half Moon Hollow.

Much like the other books in the series, I would highly recommend Nice Girls Don't Live Forever to anyone that is a fan of snarky light reads about a vamp chick that is just trying to adjusted to her new undead life.
Forbidden ThrustBlood LustPenetrating FangsThe Mis-Adventures of Milly..... "More things were being inserted than fangs.....  This is porn, vampire porn but porn all the same."

I hate, loathe, viciously despise with the fire of a thousand suns BS relationship drama. I also harbor a lifelong aversion to babies and won’t want to hear about pregnancy. So, naturally, the author of one of my favorite series decided to slather one of her books with both. Thankfully, the novel climaxed with a suggestion of HEA, but I really didn’t enjoy the journey.

Jane's adventures continue and this time she's having trouble in her relationship with Gabriel. He has been keeping secrets and refusing to answer her questions, and what was supposed to be a fun trip for them around Europe, ends with them more or less broken up.

Jane returns home and puts all her energy into getting her shop up and running, and supporting her best friend while he freaks out about impending fatherhood, when she starts receiving threatening letters from a stalker who wants her to stay away from Gabriel.

Light and fun, with a supernatural cast facing everyday problems on top of their supernatural ones, like .

The series continues with a short story, Nice Girls Don’t Sign a Lease Without a Wedding Ring, but Andrea and Dick's story that started in the second book of this series is told in full in Fangs for the Memories and would be next chronologically.

I was honestly prepared to not like this book because I really thought I hated Jane. She was such a doormat and let everyone in her life walk all over her. However, in the end, I really appreciate how she developed as a character and I look forward to her coming more into her own. Also, I’m interested in seeing how her and her sister’s relationship will hopefully develop in the next book as well as her and Gabriel’s.

This book starts out on a depressing note. One that carries it's way into the middle of the book. However, the humor is quickly brought back out and leaves you laughing out loud just as much as the previous two books...possibly more.

The only thing about this book that makes me wonder is the ending. All conflicts seem to be resolves which leaves me thinking that there won't be another book. And when I say all conflicts, I mean all of them. Jane ends up in a full on truce with her sister Jenny (with the help of a little mud wrestling). Zeb and Jolene have their babies and their house is almost finished with some help from Jane. Gabriel finally tells Jane about Jeanine and that situation works itself out.
And last but not least, Dick and Andrea get their happily ever after, even if it was taken out of their control. What's left after all that resolution?

This is going to seem weird, but these books now remind me of Penrod - short stories about small town life wrapped up in a larger book. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed reading it, it was a fun little read, but like many series destined to be practically endless they lose somewhat of a sense of urgency ya know? Still, this series is clever, fun and worth a read! Watch my video review

Audio. Have I mention that I love this series, particularly the audio? I do. Funny, snarky and smart tidbits in a fluffy vampire romance. Good way to pass time.

Three books in and I'm really enjoying Molly Harper's vampire series. It's a good helping of comedy with touches of romance tied up in a mystery package. Also there are side dishes of awesome supporting characters that are just as funny as the main character. I've been in a reading funk lately and Molly Harper's books have been the perfect remedy. Looking forward to the next book. Highly recommended

very cute, silly, easy read. I like Jane and her ridiculousness. The issues with Gabriel are figured out. Craziness ensues.
