Tyler Crook might be one of the few artists that turn writer, that actually manages to pull it off! The road is littered with failed artist-to-writers..

The characters are well drawn (both in art and writing), the set-up is maybe not the most original, but shines because of the art.

Only thing is, the pacing of the first three chapters/issues gives the feeling there should be two more, instead of the one we get. So the fourth chapter/issue feels like the pacing goes from zero to sixty in half a second. The book has a good baddie, who actually looks unnerving in its oddness (instead of yet another monster cliche with sharp claws), but it is much too easily dispatched with.

An extra chapter could've made it a much more wellrounded reading experience, with a complete story arc, instead of leaving us hanging on a significant 'to be continued'.

(Thanks to Dark Horse Books for providing me with an ARC through Edelweiss)

Tyler Crook, who I know for his artwork in B.P.R.D. comes out with his own book!

The artwork is great, moody and atmospheric with muddy colors that contribute so much to the story.

It's a fantasy story set in the modern era. An old retired monster hunter in hiding crosses paths with a young girl... and he's back in the game! But he's really not interested in fighting anymore. He possess this old sword that reminds me of the Hyperborean sword from BPRD that a group of evil magpies are after.

There's enough good stuff here to make me interested in the next volume.

Tyler Crook tackles his own magical action-adventure series and more or less knocks it out of the park. The art, as ever, is stellar. No surprises there - the man's a genuine talent.

The plot is fairly standard urban fantasy (ancient magical sword, old man who has retired from monster hunting, young orphan who drags him back in), but it hums along at an excellent pace. Even if the world-building is fairly light so far, you can see how Crook might expand it in future volumes (more monsters! more magic users!). This is a fine start to a series. I'll be keeping an eye out for future volumes.

I enjoyed this story. It was a quicker read, but the art kept slowing me up to take time and appreciate it, which is a huge part of what made this book for me. I wasn’t familiar with Tyler Crook before reading this, but based on the art alone, I’d like to dig into more that he’s done.

Fantastic artwork, as always. However the story wasn't surprising at all.

Tyler Crook is one of my favorite graphic novel artists (Harrow County fan here!), and I love that he wrote this, too! I really liked the characters in this first volume, and I can't wait for more. I feel like this is just getting started.

Reminded me of MAGE by Matt Wagner, but through the lense of OLD MAN LOGAN.
Loved this series. Heard good things about this series thanks to Comics Beat, and ended up reading this trade in one sitting.

Really great Horror/Adventure book! Great characters, killer art. Can't wait for the next series! I want great success for this book!

A reread before starting the new arc. What I love about this world of Howard and Lupe that Tyler Crook has created is that the mythology seems old, like bone deep old, yet at the same time it’s original and I can’t wait to learn more about this world.

Today's fiction post is on The Lonesome Hunters by Tyler Crook. It is 104 pages long and is published by Dark Horse Comics. The cover has the two main characters with the magic sword. The intended reader is someone who likes urban fantasy and supernatural settings. There is no foul language, no sex, and mild action violence in this graphic novel. The story is told from third person god perspective following the characters. There Be Spoilers Ahead.
From the back of the book- An old and out-of-practice monster hunter in hiding crosses paths with a young girl that forces him to confront these chaotic creatures. As the beasts invade their tenement they set off on a supernatural road trip to stop these ancient evils in a story that explores the ways that youth informs adulthood and how early traumas can haunt us in old age.

Review- The story starts with the hunter, Howard, as a young man and what happened to him. Then we jump into the future with Lupe as she is trying to just make it living with her uncle, who stole something that he shouldn't have. She runs to Howard and then they are fighting and running from things either truly understand. This volume is a lot of set-up from the world to the characters. So a lot of questions but no answer about what is really going on and who the bad guys really are. But I'm hopeful, as I did enjoy this graphic novel. I look forward to reading the volume whenever it comes out.

I give this graphic novel a Four out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I borrowed this graphic novel from my local library.

Tyler Crook takes on the writing and art duties and delivers a solid horror fantasy book. Knowing his work mostly from Harrow County, Crook renders gorgeous pages with his signature watercolors. Instead of the lush color palette found in Harrow County, Crook employs more muddier tones in The Lonesome Hunters. It may not be quite as pretty, but it's highly effective and setting the moody atmosphere for this comic.

The story itself was enjoyable albeit forgettable. We're introduced to an old man who was traumatized as a child and hasn't quite got over it. He owns a big ass sword. He has to work with a young girl in his building as they ward off psychotic magpies possessed by some entity. The dynamic between the old guy and the girl are fun enough I suppose, but the comic doesn't really put in the work to get us to understand what the stakes really are.

I would still read more though if Crook makes more. Definitely a fun time and the artwork is splendid stuff.

Tragedy sends a young girl into the path of an aging monster hunter, who has to come out of retirement to keep them both safe, and face up to his past in the process.

I'll raise a hand and say I only picked this up because I really enjoyed Tyler Crooks' Harrow County artwork, which remains excellent throughout these four issues, but I'm also pleased to report that the storyline here is pretty great too. The contrast between the two characters comes off well without either of them seeming to be in the wrong, both perspectives are appropriate given what they know about the situation that they're in. It's a little Last Of Us, a little Silent Hill, and a lot of fun. Not too creepy just yet, but it's not a straight up horror book anyway.

I was going to complain that there's no conclusion or anything here, but I've just seen that a follow-up series has been solicited, so I'll shut up about that.

Worth a look, with a lot of potential for more.

The Lonesome Hunters follows two characters, Howard, a old man that's even older than he looks, and Guadalupe, a teenaged orphan. This is the opening chapter of a longer story, laying the ground work with a particular focus on the characters and their past traumas. Crook uses his page layouts and colours to carry much of the plot, often with little dialogue.

This is Tyler Crook's first major comics work where he's handling the writing, and he takes to it well. The collection also includes a sketchbook section, showing the evolution of the story.

I have a review of the first issue here: http://www.multiversitycomics.com/rev... (light spoilers)

And a review of the second issue here: http://www.multiversitycomics.com/rev... (heavy spoilers)

So there's this mysterious old guy with a powerful magic sword and arcane knowledge of dark and forbidden things... and he's not some unstoppable demon-slaying badass whose name rings out in the halls of hell. He's just a guy. Old and scared, but still not a coward - still trying his best and still looking to protect a little kid even when he's pretty sure it won't do any good and just leads to him dying. It's a refreshing spin, I like it.

The rest of the story's just okay, though. Nothing else to remark on in a good or bad way. Three and a half. Maybe a little less.

The Lonesome Hunters, Tyler Crook
Imagine a story that has contributors like C.S. Lewis / Hitchcock / Stephen King / Clint Eastwood.
Old man and his ancient aluminum cricket bat. ****
#1- "A hundred years ago.. when Howard was a young man, he was given a MAGIC SWORD."
#2- "NO, YOU NASTY BIRD! LEAVE HIM ALONE!"
#3- "Uncle George was the LAST ONE. I don't have any more family."
#4- "Okay, sword. If you want to do something cool and magical, now would be the time."

I enjoyed the plot of this, and what I've learned of the characters so far (this book is a collection of issues 1-4) but I don't feel a whole lot of depth. Even so, when the next collection comes out, I'll probably read it.
Also, the coloring is quite dark for my taste, though I'm not sure it would work if it were any brighter.

Simple, fresh, and creepy; all of which are hard to find characteristics of comics these days. I could not put this down! Such a great read and I cannot wait for the second volume to come out. If you like other Dark Horse titles, you will love this one!

Kind of simple, but I like the characters and I like the art. An old man has been in possession of a magic sword which makes him immortal for a long time. A girl in his apartment complex gets mixed up with another magical artifact and drags him into it.

I have no idea what the title means.

Tyler Crook at his best. God, I love this book! His beautiful water colors bringing a moody, ominous, lived in world to life. Crook is a fantastic artist and storyteller and if I wasn't already this book would make me a fan for life.

I really enjoyed this. Great art, colours and good writing. It wasn't gripping, it was just really well done.
Im sticking with it digitally as the library edition is too expensive to justify 8 issues - unless the wolf child series is amazing.

Definitely read this series.

I love all the monster character designs, but my favorite part is out inept Howard is. He's had a 100 years to become the ultimate demon fighter, but was just like, "nah".

A good monster hunter story is always a treat. Especially when it approaches the story in a new fashion.

Crook has given readers just that with his fresh take on the monster hunter. Plucky sidekick: check. Mystical hunting implement: check. Interesting monsters to face off against: check. It’s all here in Lonesome Hunters by Tyler Crook, both writer and artist. But what is different? Well, the hero was forced to carry the weapon, and—now that he is now much older and alone—he must hide it away to not draw attention. And the plucky sidekick? She’s much more eager than the hero, but out of necessity. These characters collide and neither of them can return to their semblance of normal lives afterward. But are they better in this new partnership? Readers will have to grab a copy to find out.

The wonderful artwork in this volume is renascent of many titles from the Hellboy universe, which is no surprise since Crook did much of the art for the B.P.R.D Hell on Earth arc years ago. The strongest aspect of Lonesome Hunters is the characters. Readers will instantly fall for the hero and his helper. It’s like a twisted version of Pixar’s Up crossed with the Hellboy comics.

If you’re looking for an awesome new monster-of-the-week comic series, definitely give Lonesome Hunters a look. Though apparently, just based on this collection of the first four issues, there is much more to the larger arc than picking off a monster at a time. This was really a blast to read.
