This was my first Rue Allyn book. Knight Errant is a medieval historical romance about a lady of the cloth (does that exist?) travelling from somewhere in Belgium to somewhere in Italy with the aid of a knight, who is actually there to take her back to her cousin - the king of England -, to assist her sisterhood against a woman-hating fool and the church.
+ The world building and background story were pretty good, being revealed throughout the novel instead of here-now-you-know's. Some revelations even left me impressed! And I'm really all out of being impressed by historical romances. The main characters were pretty standard, brooding-repenting hero and pretty-much-perfect heroine, who both have severe difficulties with reading people. Well written graphic scenes, without the incessant flourishing that seems to be the trend this year.
- I'd like to point out that as an arc I believe this problem will be solved in the publication, but some passages are very badly edited, with situations that don't follow through between one paragraph and the next. And that last third of the book. Whywhywhywhywhy? You had everything going on to make a splash and then This chick needs to take some dose of Angelica Fanshawe.
Overall, good new blood for the historical romance fans out there!
This is a fast paced tale of sacrifice, passion, the church, and romance. A Medieval Historical Romance. It has many facets. The hero,is a knight who has flaws, is on a mission to get the heroine to England, where her cousin wishes her to wed a Scotsman. They encounter trouble from an evil Bishop and must fight their attraction to each other. Heresy, burning at the stake, and torture of woman, is only a part of this story. The hero would do anything to save the heroine from a horrible death even going against his King and possibly committing treason. Fast paced. About half way through is not for the faint of heart. A very good story. Unique, interesting and intriguing. An enjoyable read with a few twists and turns.

The year is 1294. Lady Juliana Verault is a noblewoman, cousin to the King of England, but she has fled her privileged existence to join a community of lay religious women called Beguines, headquartered in Belgium. Intelligent, courageous, compassionate and stubborn, she wants to follow her faith, heal the sick and remain single. Her personal history has taught her that men are vicious beasts and that women who wed them are little better than slaves.
Sir Robert Clarwyn has been sent by King Edward to retrieve the Lady Juliana and bring her back to England, where she’s to be the pawn in a political marriage. He catches up with her in Italy, but finds his mission far more difficult than he’d expected. Not only is Juliana unwilling to accompany him, but she and her sister Beguines have attracted the attention of a cruel but influential priest who views the lay sisters as heretics, and delights in torturing them. Sir Robert must rescue her, then keep her safe during the long journey back to her home country. Meanwhile, he finds himself falling in love with her. He has undertaken the King’s commission in order to free himself from dishonor, but his passion for the forbidden Juliana could easily be viewed as treason.
I really enjoyed this historical romance, especially the background on the Beguines. I wasn’t previously aware of this movement, but it provided a realistic and compelling context for the love story in Knight Errant. Ms. Allyn begins the book with a disclaimer about the characters and historical accuracy, but my researches after I’d finished indicate that the basic situation with the lay religious movements was as she describes. The women wanted to be left alone to live in peace and offer charity. The men in charge of the Church saw them as threats. (Indeed, there are still echoes of this dynamic in modern Catholicism.)
Juliana is a delightful heroine, truly admirable while still having some flaws. She saves a number of lives over the course of the novel, while risking her own. Her efforts to sidestep Sir Robert and stymie his commission are just this side of humorous. Though he has many excellent qualities, he’s no match for her. Ultimately, of course, she succumbs to her attraction for the brave and austere knight. The circumstances of her deflowering are surprising, and I won’t spoil the pleasure by sharing them here, but suffice to say that their coming together only ratchets up the conflict.
In fact, I don’t read that much romance because I often find it overly predictable. Of course I knew that this novel would have a happy ending, but I could not guess exactly how the author was going to resolve what seemed like a near-impossible situation. And when Robert and Juliana finally are together, with the King’s blessing, I felt the satisfaction that keeps romance readers coming back for another HEA.
I bought a copy of Knight Errant after reading in the author’s newsletter that it was on sale for ninety nine cents. Just an indication that author newsletters and special deals do work! I’d never read any of Ms. Allyn’s work before. If Knight Errant is representative of her romances, I’ll definitely be seeking out other titles.
Rue Allyn's Knight Errant was an strange interesting book.
If I would think of it as a 13 century knight tale, then it was pretty good, if I forget the strange not so much fitting lust talk by Juliana at the beginning. As a knight tale/ancient folklore, it was also filled with unbelievable things, jumps in places and time, just dragons, sea creatures and men with snake tongues were missing :)
But if I take it as a historical romance novel, then it was infuriatingly filled with mistakes in time line, in geography, in history. And the romance between Juliana and Robert ... well that was strange. At the beginning its almost like contemporary, how Robert gets wood the moment he sees her and she at once thinks about her empty womb and her wanting to be his, even if for just one night, who would know ...seriously?!?!? ... but then all of a sudden Robert gets this "secret" that keeps him away from love and all female and Juliana is worried about his size and how she has to leave the Beguine if she does submit to him ... it's like the beginning is written by somebody else or written a long time ago and the author did not reread it.
I really wanted to like this story, and in a way I did, but there where just too many odd things that did no add up, that did not fit. If it had been one or the other - the knight tale or historic romance - it would have been much better, but now ... It wasn't bad exactly but it wasn't good either.
Juliana is on her way to Palermo with her sister Beguines. They are a group of women dedicated to living a life free of men. This doesn't go down well with the churchmen. One in particular is out to torture and punish them as heretics. Juliana has had dealings with this priest before, he is searching for her, and will stop at nothing to see her dead. Sir Robert is a landless Knight, because of crimes committed by his father. He is convinced he is the lowest of men, and must attone for the stain on his name.To win his lands back he works as a hunter of men for King Edward. This time the king has sent him to find his cousin, and bring her home to marry a Scot he has promised her to. There is a lot of danger Robert and Juliana must face in this story. It might have been easier for our poor hero if our heroine wasn't a medieval feminist. They go from one disaster to another on their journey. You will not want to put this book down.
This book had it all......romance, suspense, history. The book keep you on the edge of your seat until the end! Learning about the history and realizing what women actually went through during these times was at times disheartening. Women were prosecuted and killed for being women. It makes me wonder that even today in some cultures women are still treated badly.
The romance between Juliana and Robert was well written. There was conflict, passion, love. Their journey was filled with inner self reflection by both. Each had to work through past demons and had to move forward through them before they could be together.
This book would be great for book clubs to talk about! Many angles, feelings, and emotions to talk about. I received this book from NetGalley for honest review!
While I did enjoy Knight Errant, I liked Knight Defender better. I got a bit irritated with the heroine. I'm glad I read the other one first. Happy reading!
Characters developed well. You could almost feel the hate from the priest towards women. Juliana and Roberts live was tested to the limit. Twist in the plot. Very well written.
Interesting view of history. I'm now interested in learning more about what seems in the novel of a universal view of men really disliking women. And all church men hating women. A little over the top for my liking. I did like the main characters.
Lady Juliana Verault never planned to marry. She longed to be a free woman with her sisters in faith never to be under the control of a man. But when disaster strikes the sisters on their way to Palermo, Italty and she is rescued by a handsome yet beguiling knight and her outlook on men begins to change.
Sir Robert Clarwyn is a cursed man. Stripped of all property and Baron in name alone he desires above all else to reclaim his family's honor and when the King of England gives him that chance he will not let anyone stand in his way. Not even the beautiful woman he promised to deliver.
I seemed to be reading a lot of stories with strong women in them. That or it is just the trend lately. Though, I can't say I am sorry.
Juliana hides her emotions behind a serene smile. An ultimate poker face and one that her new burly guide wants nothing more than to wipe from her face. Her dedication to her faith is award worthy as well as her determination to live a free woman.
I love that the author talks about the hardships of women in the 13th century. Forced to rely on male family members to make all their decisions, they are lucky to find one who doesn't use their fist to get their way, let alone love them. Juliana and her sisters are determined to prove that women are not evil in a male driven world and their commitment to their cause will have you burning your bras to show your support!
Besides the historical aspects of the novel, the love story between Robert and Juliana is breath taking. A man that feels he does not deserve love and a woman who has plenty of love to give, just not to a man. The way they find each other, especially with all odds against them, makes you believe in true love again (if you ever didn't in the first place).
Received this book from NetGalley. I enjoyed reading this book and I'm glad that I didn't live during that time period. The book kept my interest from beginning to end. The chemistry was there between Robert and Juliana and I enjoyed the banter between the two of them. The patience that Juliana had in dealing with everything was impressive and was definitely a way to drive people crazy. At first I couldn't believe the way Fra Basti acted, considering he was a man of the cloth. It was hard to understand at first why the Church allowed his torture techniques to occur but then I thought about the time period it is set in and then I'm not surprised. I liked Robert's solution in saving Juliana from more torture by Fra Basti and Robert's plan to thwart Fra Basti in seeing the consumation was ingenious. I was disappointed in the ending of the book because it just ended. It would have been nice to know what happened in their future
I read quite a bit of historical romance novels and honestly this one was just not good. I didn't like the characters, the story was not that interesting to me, and it was all just a bit frustrating. Juliana acts like a holier than thou person at times, but at others she just seems like a desperate whining woman. Robert just let like a strange character that just didn't quite fit into the story well.

Rue Allyn’s Knight Errant tells a story of honor, independence, forgiveness and love. In this historical romance Rue is an excellent job bringing the time period to life with characters and setting.
** I was provided a copy of this story to read in exchange for an honest review from Netgalley. **
It was good good story but the only thing I didn't care about was in the beginning it hard to into the story because it slow. Things happen now and then in the beginning but started to pick up half way through the story. I enjoyed reading it even though it was slow.
Rue Allyn's "Knight Errant" is the first tale in The Knight Chronicles. It's great! I loved it. I couldn't put it down. The characters are great and the story was very detailed. Lots of hot scenes (more than you usually get with a historical!). Robert is super sexy. So broken and in need of her fixing! I can't wait to read #2 and #3!
