When a nobleman’s daughter goes missing, Elinor Chalamet and Archambeau rush to discover who has kidnapped her and why.
Saddled with a bumbling apprentice, a drunken soldier, and a prickly nobleman who won’t explain why he hasn’t paid a proper call, Elinor must discover what exactly the Morpheus Society is hiding from her.
Will Elinor’s dance with ghosts become a permanent arrangement? And when Tristan discovers her missing, who will face his wrath?
Elinor Chalamet uses her wits and her ghost-talking skills to hunt for her father’s killer in Alenbonné, a coastal city where ghosts walk at all hours. The third of a six-part gaslamp fantasy ghost mystery series featuring a Sherlock Holmes-like female character in a slow burn romance.

Discover fearless women, clever as cats, partnered with men who fall first even if they do have a hidden agenda. Byrd writes riveting characters who are relatable but realistically complex.
Her book series showcase alternate histories with intrigue, fantasy, and the supernatural, while Byrd’s standalone novels are thought-provoking explorations of family dysfunction using contemporary settings and magical realism.
Spirit Guide By Byrd Nash This is book #3 in the series and I have loved each one! I love a good ghost story but also it has to have a wonderful plot, fun dialogue, witty and smart characters, slight romance, and a bit of suspense. This book has all of this and so much more! I love how our main female character is smart (think Sherlock smart), stubborn, and yet down to earth too. The mystery includes some supernatural and ghostly elements. Throwing in new characters with new powers in this book is pretty exciting! Can't wait to see where this leads. I want to thank NetGalley and the publisher for letting me read this book! Loved it!
Spirit Guide is the third in a series of novellas that feature Madame Elinor Chalamet, a ghost talker. The stories are set in a fictional country around 1900 or so, given that we are reading about carriages, gaslight, etc. Most of the characters have French-sounding or English-sounding names, so I assume the world is a fictionalized European country somewhere.
Chalamet is an independent, intelligent woman who started studying with a group called the Morpheus Society to try to figure out who had killed her father several years earlier. She’s quite gifted at what she does (“ghost talking” and other related skills) and has observational skills to rival Sherlock Holmes.
In Spirit Guide, Chalamet is asked to help find an adult daughter of a Baron. Things get pretty complex, and Chalamet suspects someone in the Morpheus Society is doing things that are not exactly on the up-and-up.
I enjoyed the main characters, both Madame Chalamet, and the Duke, with who she seems to have an on-again off-again romantic interest. Her new apprentice was a great addition to the series.
I look forward to reading about their further adventures, as this looks to become a six-novella series, and Chalamet keeps getting bits of information that might eventually lead her to figure out who murdered her father.
Thank you to NetGalley and Rook and Castle Press for the opportunity to read a copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
"When a nobleman’s daughter goes missing, Elinor Chalamet and Tristain Fontaine, the Duke de Archambeau, must work together to discover who has kidnapped her and why. Saddled with a bumbling apprentice, a drunk soldier, and a prickly nobleman who won’t explain why he hasn’t paid a proper call, Elinor must decide if the Morpheus Society is hiding something from her. When the investigation reveals a connection to an old rival, she finds herself going it alone, something Tristan had demanded she not do."
Elinor's apprentice supplies a lot of the comic relief in this episode. Twyla is young, impetuous, and has a wild amount of psychic talent, over which she has only vague control. However, she proves herself very useful as Elinor begins her hunt for the missing daughter. It seems the daughter's maid is also missing, as are several other young women. There are stories floating around of seance parties given by the Morpheus Society that involve young goddesses, and very solid ghosts who interact with the party-goers. Could these goddesses be the missing young women? If so, then where are they?
This is a rather bittersweet story that puts Elinor in grave danger. While it doesn't end in a cliffhanger, it is obvious at the end that it will take Elinor a good while to recover her strength and her emotional equilibrium. I've already pre-ordered #4 Gray Lady.
Another intriguing addition to the Madame Chalamet Ghost Mysteries series. While I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first two books, I've grown invested in the characters and plot.
Elinor's adventures and tantalizing romance with the dashing Tristan continue in Spirit Guide. Elinor must discover why young girls are going missing and what it has to do with the Society of mediums she is a member of. Along the way, she discovers more clues in her father's murder.
I've enjoyed the mysteries that Elinor continues to find herself in. But I really want to know more of the details regarding her father's murder, as well as the death of Tristan's wife. I hope the next book gives more answers.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Rook and Castle for sending me a free copy.
The Madame Chalamet series is a paranormal, fantasy, gaslamp, historical mystery series set in the fictional place of late 19th century-early 20th century Alenbonne (which sounds a lot like France).
Madame Elinor Chalamet is a trained medium belonging to the Morpheus Society who uses her skills as a Ghost Talker to solve paranormal related cases while searching for clues and details pertaining to her father's murder which she hopes will lead her to his killer.
Tristan Fontaine, Duke de Archambeau, is an aristocrat and a right hand man of sorts to the King of Alenbonne whose path crosses with Elinor when he requires her assistance and expertise to solve certain cases that could put the king's political and diplomatic position as well as his life in grave danger if not solved in time. The Duke also has a dark history related to his first wife's death.
In all the three books we see both Elinor and Tristan doing what they do best while indulging in some sharp witted banter. Being a paranormal series the descriptions of séances and Elinor's gift to interact with ghosts/spirits and travel to the Otherworld are easily explained and these scenes blend in well with the ongoing plots. Elinor finds herself with a new female apprentice at the end of book two who shows to possess some unique powers of her own.
As per the author, this is a six part series and I look forward to reading what happens next. My thanks to NetGalley, the publishers Rook and Castle Press/IBPA and the author Byrd Nash for the e-Arcs.
Brief Summary This is the third book in the series and whilst each mystery is standalone the books do need to be read in order to fully enjoy and understand them. Elinor and Tristan, along with Elinor's scatterbrained apprentice, are soon caught up in the hunt for a missing noblewoman and her servant. All the clues point to The Morpheus Society being heavily embroiled in this sorry affair and Elinor's loyalties are questioned.
Star Rating 4.5 stars. The story had me gripped from start to finish and I ended up reading late into the night as I couldn't put it down. Always the sign of a good story.
The Characters The characters are being developed over the series, which is why I recommend reading the books in the correct order. In this one, we see both Elinor and Tristan opening up to one another a little more, though there's a fine line between passionate ardour and ire. I adored Twyla, Elinor's apprentice, and hope we see more of her in future books. She added a nice air of fun and unpredictability.
The Writing The story beings In medias res, with Twyla struggling to banish a rather unpleasant ghost following an unsuccessful seance. The author then weaves a captivating story that moves along at a fairly brisk pace. There are enough clues to make the "big reveal" feel tenable without being too obvious, and the author often answers one question with another, so that even though the plot is moving forward we still don't have all the answers. I was pleased that we saw some movement towards finding out who killed Elinor's father, as well as seeing Tristan be a little more open about his feelings for Elinor.
The World-Building The setting is fantasy, though reminiscent of Western Europe in the late-Victorian age. There are also paranormal elements - the ability to see and communicate with ghosts and to observe echoes of images held within objects. The world-building focuses both on the paranormal aspects and on the hierarchy of Sarnesian society. Information on surrounding countries/regions is less detailed but still sufficient for the story to work. In this book, we also found out more about the Morpheus Society and got a better idea of just what has kept Tristan, Duke de Archambeau, so busy.
One Liner: Entertaining; the series is gaining momentum
Tristan, the Duke de Archambeau, brings a nobleman to Elinor to help find his missing daughter. With the Morpheus Society involved, Elinor is determined to get to the root of the matter and save the girl. However, things are hardly easy for her with an uninvited ghost, a bumbling but smart apprentice, and mounting danger. Can Elinor save herself this time?
The story comes from Elinor’s POV.
My Thoughts:
This third book in the series has loads of laughs and serious moments. It also increases the danger levels and provides some information about the crucial subplot I’ve been curious about.
Twyla Andricksson is a great addition to the story. She is silly, funny, annoying, irritating, and a sweetheart. A typical teenager sans addiction to technology, of course. Her natural ability as a medium and other special talents bring trouble but also help Elinor when she needs them the most.
The love track between Tristan and Elinor has a little more progress (finally!). I wouldn’t mind if it picks up some extra pace in the next book, which might happen based on the sneak peek at the end. ;)
The mystery isn’t the strong point, though it is a part of the plot. Instead, the paranormal elements are the highlight of the book. Be it the Beyond world or how Elinor explores her talents and stretches them when necessary. The climax is real good. I wish it lasted a wee bit longer. I love it when nature’s elements help characters finish the job.
It isn’t really a spoiler, but there’s one chapter by Twyla. It made me laugh out loud despite the gravity of the situation. That girl needs a book of her own. A spin-off, maybe? *hint*
We also get to know more about the Morpheus Society, and I’m guessing this is just a start. That place is a den of secrets, many of which might be revealed in the coming books.
Like always, I enjoy the seamless commentary on society and hypocrisy as an integral part of the plot. It’s artfully done to advance the plot.
To summarize, Spirit Guide is a solid continuation of the series and a fast-paced novella with varied elements. Those who enjoy Amanda Quick’s historicals will like this series (though this one doesn’t have explicit romance). The book won’t be as entertaining as a standalone piece. Read the series in order if you pick it up.
Thank you, NetGalley, Rook and Castle Press, and IBPA Member Titles, for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.
Spirit Guide is the third book in a series of novella's which mixes historical mystery with the paranormal, set in a fantasy world. And they are great fun. In this novella Madame Chalamet goes looking for a missing noble woman, but it doesn't take long for her to come across a dead body. Chalamet's a talented Ghost Talker, which means she can hold seánces, but she can also replay the final memories of dead people. Chalamet also has the company of an apprentice this time around... a talented young girl who doesn't always think things through and sucks up a lot of energy. Their interactions are Great. And, I have to say I also didn't mind the romance. Although the mystery is just fine, the plot itself shows us more about the Morpheus Society that Madame Chalamet was taught by, as well as her father's death. Overall, a very entertaining read and I am excited to find out where the next book will take us.
One of the best authors I've ever read! That is saying a lot because I've read all the top authors.. top quality and caliber of writing...it's captivating!
I just finished the third book, and I’m still loving the series. In this third book, we delve more into the Morpheus Society, and the people there. We get to see a little into Elinor’s past, and the people that were there. This mystery I kinda figured out for myself whereas I didn’t with the first two, but this was still a wonderful addition to the series. I can’t wait to see what the author has in store next for Elinor, Tristin, Twyla, Anne-Marie, and the rest of the characters. I’ll miss this series when it’s finished. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
Are missing girls linked to a mysterious séance where ghosts become flesh? When the investigation reveals a connection to an old rival, she finds herself going it alone, something Tristan had demanded she not do. Will her dance with ghosts be a permanent arrangement? And when Tristan Fontaine discovers her missing, who will be able to face his wrath? Elinor Chalamet uses her wits and her ghost-talking skills to hunt for her father’s killer in Alenbonné, a coastal city where ghosts walk at all hours. Will her desire for answers lead her to a fatal mistake …
When after signing up for the advance copy of this book, I learned it would be delivered for the end of this week-end, I was fingers crossed hoping it would be in time for me to read it in between two other books. So it became my Sunday/Monday late and early read.
Once more Elinor and the Duke of de Archambeau band together to discover who is behind a lady’s disappearance. Their tempers clash and sparks fly, fueled by months of pent-up emotions. Still there are so many dents and holes paving their road, a happily ever after is not yet on the table. And while the mystery and its culprit were easy to pick up, the murderer was quite surprising as was Elinor’s unconventional rescue. Elinor is her usual self, resilient, determined and driven with a Tristan breathing his usual hot and cold, oscillating between wanting to struggle or hugging her. The third wheel in this case is Twyla, Elinor’s new appointed apprentice, a walking babbling disaster with a certain knack.
An entertaining continuation of this series which test our dear characters’ toughness and quick thinking. 5 stars

I have been granted an advance copy by the author, here is my true and unbiased opinion.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The plot: our favorite Ghost Talker is pulled into interesting, but dangerous events. The Duke introduces her to his friend - Baron Losendahl who is looking for his missing daughter Ebbe. Little do they know what their search will lead to and what mysteries are to be unraveled.
This is the third book in the series, and I liked it a lot. This is the case when the series does not get boring or predictable with each book. As always Elinor has several cases and her assistant Twyla is here to help.
What I liked:
1. the main case is intriguing. The search for Ebbe leads to interesting events and unforeseeable consequences.
2. we learn more about ghost talking and the Morpheus society, its leadership, and operations.
3. Elinor is shown from different sides - she is a woman in love, a hard worker, a strategic thinker, and a very strict mentor. The way she taught Twyla is terrifying, but amusing at the same time.
4. the relationship between Elinor and Tristan develops further and I finally got the scene I have been waiting for. I like how it is described and that it is not overly lovey-dovey. It is actually kind of funny in the end, given they had some uninvited witnesses.
5. the writing. I like the author's writing style, the book is well-written, the story develops gradually, it is easy and pleasant to read, and the humor is great.
Content warnings: death
Overall opinion: I really enjoyed this book! It was so good to see the characters again and read about their adventures. I was sad when the book ended because I knew I was going to miss the characters. I really love Elinor as a heroine and can't wait for the next book to come out!
This is the third instalment of the six-novella Madame Elinor Chalamet ghost mysteries. Elinor hasn’t seen Tristan, Duke de Archambeau since the King’s winter revels some months ago when he surprised her by kissing her passionately. When he does eventually come to see her, he's back to behaving formally and it’s to ask for her help to find the missing daughter of a Baronet, who is worried that she’s seeking help to enter the spirit world to find her dead school friend.
Elinor now has an annoying teenage apprentice, Twyla, who never listens and is exceptionally clumsy, but Elinor accidently discovers she does have one remarkable skill that may prove useful in finding missing girl. With strange séances, a trip to the Beyond and a deadly ghost this episode is full of danger for Elinor at every turn and she must really on Tristan and her friends to help her. Elinor also learns a little more about her father’s death and leaves us on a bit of a cliffhanger.
This is a series best read from the beginning, especially as the characters develop more with each novella. Elinor is a strong and resilient woman who refuses to swoon at Tristan's feet and is clearly annoyed with his behaviour, so will their slow burning romance eventually come to the boil or will they keep sniping at each other? Let's hope we don't have to wait too long for the next instalment to check in on their relationship and find out more about who killed Elinor's father.
With thanks to Rook and Castle via Netgalley for a copy to read
This is the 3rd book of Madame Chalamet Ghost Mysteries series, it can be read as stand alone. This series was soo good, just yesterday i think about the 3rd book and here we are!
Madame Elinor Chalamet Ghost Talker investigation continue, this time she have case missing daughter of Baron Losendahl who somehow linked to The Morpheus Society. Elinor have Mys Twyla Andricksson as apprentice, clumsy young women who had natural ability as medium, spirits are attracted and want to get her attention. Twyla abel to travel to the beyond without lraving her body in earth plane, this ability helping Elinor solve the case and save her life.
There is Tristan Fountain Duke de Archambeau, once again gone for months without news and appear to give Elinor case and confuse with their relationship. Omce again their do back-and-forth flirt, i-dont-want-married-again but give attention and care about Elinor. FINALLY THE KISS!!! oh my god talking about the real slow burn!! Sneak peak from the next book give me squel excitement about their relationship.
Thank you to NetGalley for provide this book, it is pleasure to review this book.
The new characters the author introduced in the second book are alive and well in this installment. Twyla is a breath of fresh air to this series, she brings humor, excitement, a know it all attitude, and most of all she gets on Madame's nerves...lol. Which only enhances the relationship between she and Elinor. Life as Madame has known is forever changed with Twyla underfoot.
Madame will have to become comfortable with being uncomfortable, because life is about balance. So, if Twyla is a breath of fresh air, what can the reader expect from Mysir Lafayette? Expect any and everything, he is written deliciously horrid. I get chills just thinking about what he is capable of. Mysir Lafayette is a big deal at the Morpheus Society and he is very jealous of Madame. For reasons that must be read in this exciting story. So, readers grab your biggest mixing bowl and add these ingredients.
Tristan would be love interest, Twyla new on the block and full of herself, Mysir Lafayette surprisingly clever, but as slick as they come. What you now have is the best book in the series so far!!!! The author really does out do herself with this one!!! I cannot wait until the next story. Thank you author for my free copy of this amazing story.
I want to thank Booksirens and Byrd Nash for an advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own and my review is left voluntarily.
The third installment of the Madame Chalamet books was another hit for me! Elinor Chalamet has been saddled with an apprentice she never really wanted and Mys Twyla Andricksson has a tendency to act without thinking. The dynamic of these two was so much fun to watch evolve and had some laugh out loud moments.
It didn't take long for Tristan Fontaine Duke de Archambeau, to come into the story, roping Elinor into the case of a missing woman. While he had his moments singing her praises, he had just as many getting under her skin! But this development of their feelings and relationship has me so invested! It is definitely a SLOW burn but so worth it!!
Spirit Guide gives us a closer look at Elinor's life in the Morpheus Society. We are introduced to so many people from that part of her life which I loved! Parnell Lafayette was even worse than I had expected!
Having read and enjoyed the previous books in this series, I was looking forward to being back alongside Elinor Chalamet investigating another mystery. Ghost Talker Elinor, and love interest Tristan Fontaine, the Duke de Archambeau have to work together when a nobleman’s daughter goes missing. The pair must discover who has kidnapped her and why, but when others go missing they wonder if the missing girls are linked to a mysterious séance, where ghosts become flesh. Elinor is also still looking for her father’s killer in Alenbonné, and wonders if the Society is hiding something from her. When Elinor decides to investigate alone, despite Tristan demanding she doesn’t, she must use all her wits and ghost talking skills. However, when Tristan discovers that she is now also missing, no one can face his wrath! This is an entertaining story, with great character and a gripping storyline all of which kept me gripped throughout. As usual the descriptive narrative and historical details transported me back in time, making me feel immersed in Elinor’s world.
This series continues to be quick and entertaining. In this installment of the Madame Chalamet series, Elinor is trying to find the missing daughter of a nobleman at the request of the duke. Unfortunately, she's been saddled with an obnoxious apprentice, so Elinor and the duke cannot quite get the privacy to discuss their relationship. As evidence compounds that Elinor's own research may be at fault for the current rash of disappearances, Elinor is forced to confront her own trust in the Morpheus Society.
As always Byrd does an excellent job with characterization. Twyla grows from an annoyance that you just want to swat out of the book to a reasonable character with some redemption. The romance between Elinor and the duke is still predominately hot and cold and completely reasonable for the two characters. The pacing is perfect, and as always leaves you ready for more.

“Spirit Guide” is the third book in the Madame Chalamet Ghost Mysteries. In this volume, we learned more about the Morpheus Society,Elinor’s mentor Madame Granger and Elinor’s apprentice Twyla. The mystery involved the disappearance of two young women, one of whom was linked to the Morpheus Society. I really enjoyed this addition to the series. The time flew by while I was reading, and the book was over before I knew it. The story was well-plotted and a page-turner. Archambeau returned for this story and played a central role. The relationship between he and Elinor deepened, which pleased me greatly. I recommend “Spirit Guide” greatly after reading the first two books. I don’t think it would work as well without them.
My thanks to the author for an ARC of “Spirit Guide”. All opinions are entirely my own.
Elinor is such a wonderful character, I just love to immerse myself in her adventures.
That her sometimes partner in crime solving, the Duke Archambeau, is like a Mr Darcy with a sense of humor just adds to it’s allure.
The only thing about this story that bothers me is that one of the main characters is a woman called Ebbe. My uncle is called Ebbe, as well as my friend’s young son, so every time I read that name my mind have a hickup and I have to push my own Ebbes out of my mind and rename the character with the feminine Ebba… but that’s just me and my weird brain.
The story is as excellent as the two previous books.
Well written storyline, great characters with dialouges that flows easily and a unique mystery with drama and emotions.
The knowledge that there will be three more books in this series makes me so happy!

Spirit Guide is the third book in the Gaslamp fantasy historical series Madame Chalamet Ghost Mysteries. I have enjoyed everything I have read by this talented author and the stories keep on getting better. I think this is my favourite to date. Elinor our ghost-talking super sleuth and Tristan are at it again but when an old rival is involved things get tricky and possibly deadly when Elinor disappears. Where are the missing girls? Is the Society up to something are they hiding something? To find out you will have to read for yourself. This tale has a little of everything to indulge the reader. It is mysterious and intriguing, with a slow burn romance, ghosts, history, séances, kidnappings and so much more. Who doesn’t love ghostly whodunit’s? I can’t wait for the next instalment.
I am getting more and more enthralled by this series with each book I read. This particular volume brings to mind Amanda Quick's Arcane Society series, with the same Victorian flair and fascination with the occult. I would particularly compare this book favourably with Amanda Quick's "Quicksilver" with Elinor Chalamet being as independent as Victoria Dean and Tristan Fontaine being as determined to be wolfishly noble as Owen Sweetwater. I am definitely on tetherhooks wondering where Elinor's investigations take her and Tristan next.
I received an ARC from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
Another amazing instalment in the Madame Chalamet series. I really can’t get enough and am frustrated by things in ‘real life’ such as my job and sleep because it takes away from my time to be able to devour Byrd Nash novels. I still love Elinor, could feel her frustration at her young apprentice, can’t wait to get more answers around her father’s murder and see how her relationship with Tristan unfolds. All of Nash’ characters are well rounded and you feel like you know them and yet each text reveals a little more until you are well and truly addicted. The plot of this text moved at the perfect pace and I think it goes without saying how enthralled I am with the writing style. I am eagerly awaiting the fourth in the series. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book from the author. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
As much as I am invested in these characters and the ongoing narrative, this book felt rushed and anti-climatic. The romance between the Duke and the main character Elinor seemed a bit forced rather than natural, maybe because I thought this would be more of a slow burn. I'm still looking forward to where the author is going with this series and can't wait for the next installment.
I received an advance review copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily.
Spirit Guide is a wonderful mystery/adventure with a touch of romance, I love it! The main characters are realistic and have become like old friends. I am very happy I was chosen to be an ARC reader for it and am anxiously awaiting book 4 of this series. As a bonus, the first few pages of book 4 are included which led me to want it even more.
Disclaimer This is my honest and freely given opinion.
I love this series, and I can’t wait till the next book comes out! The author brings us back to the ghost talking world Spirit Guide. A world I have fallen in love with. A world where ghosts are very present. A world where one woman uses her Ghost Talker talents to help solve mysteries and murder. Oh yeah with some attraction and tension thrown in. Madame Chalamet is back but with an apprentice in tow. One of the regulations of The Morpheus Society, is they have to take on at least one apprentice every 10 years to remain a member. Unfortunately it’s that very society that she will be going head to head with in this book. Parnell Lafayette is no friend and is now the head of the society, so any way he can ruffle Elinor’s feathers he will do just that. Hence her apprentice Twyla. What she didn’t expect was Archambeau to show back up in her life unexpectedly with a case he needed assistance on. Especially since he kind of “ghosted” her. Elinor and Tristan have tension between them that comes to head about midway through, however her feelings towards his action don’t stop her from trying to locate the missing Lady Losendahl. I love Elinor and Tristan, but the question is do they finally do something about the tension between them? The dynamic they have working together is great but there’s so much more to explore between them. How is The Morpheus Society involved? What are these ghost parties people are talking about? Trust me when I say it won’t be exactly what you think. Which is why you need to read book 3! If you haven’t read any of them, you can still jump in each book on their own. However there are elements that cross over from book to book, which is why I advise starting with book 1. So what are you waiting for? Me, I’m waiting for book 4, read and join me on that wagon.
Interesting and well paced tale. This series just seems to get better with each book. This one seems to be being a bit more darker to me. I am finding it hard to find just the right word to explain but there is a depth to these characters and it is what impresses me. I knew right from the first her being so excited about this new case would bring with it some challenges. This series so far has been very well done and this book like the others are ones I would highly recommend. I received this book for free from BookSirens and voluntarily chose to review it.
Spirit Guide is the third installment in Byrd Nash's enthralling Madame Chalamet Ghost Stories series. From the very beginning, I have been captivated by this series, with its strong and competent protagonist, Elinor, and her superbly crafted companions, including Tristan Fontaine, the Duke de Archambeau. Their relationship continues to develop in this book. Following her father's murder, Elinor is trained as a medium by the enigmatic Morpheus Society. I appreciated that Tristan acknowledges this aspect of her character and offers assistance in her ongoing investigation. Furthermore, I enjoyed delving deeper into the history and dynamics of the mysterious Morpheus Society, which has only been hinted at in earlier books. While searching for a missing nobleman's daughter, Elinor and Tristan, accompanied by an inexperienced apprentice named Twyla Andricksson, embark on a journey that sheds light on the bonds and corruption within the Morpheus Society. The book's opening immediately grabs the reader's attention, as we witness the consequences of Twyla's inexperienced seance that summons a serial killer's ghost instead of Madame Chapelle's daughter.
Overall, the conclusion involving Elinor and Tristan is captivating, and I eagerly await their final adventure. The lesson Elinor learns from Tristan, though difficult, is worth sharing: "Sometimes when things we admire show their cracks, it can be hard for us to forgive that we never saw the flaws to begin with. Hard to know that we are not perfect and all-knowing."
In this third book in a six part Gaslamp Fantasy Ghost Mystery, the Duke de Archambeau seeks Ghost Talker Elinor Chalamet's help in finding his friend's missing daughter. During their investigation, they find more girls are missing under similar circumstances and there is more than a hint that the Morpheus Society may be a common link. Impeding the investigation are an overly emotional father (a Baron, naturally), a disaster of an apprentice, a drunken friend, an old rival, and Elinor's own feelings for and relationship with both Archambeau and the Morpheus Society.
This investigation will challenge Elinor's very foundation, and it may also bring her a step closer to solving her own father's murder; but the cost may be too high. It also will have a profound affect on Archambeau. The aftermath should be interesting.
Once again, this book took me outside my comfort zone, perhaps more so than the previous books, requiring a deeper suspension of reality. It is somewhat faster paced, as well. As with the first two books, these characters are intelligent, the dialogue witty, and I continue to enjoy the interactions and developing relationship between Elinor and Archambeau. I look forward to the 4th book in the series and highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys historical fantasy, but also to those of us who are more accustomed to cozy paranormal and/or historical mysteries.
