Eoin Colfer (pronounced Owen) was born in Wexford on the South-East coast of Ireland in 1965, where he and his four brothers were brought up by his father and mother, who were both educators.
He received his degree from Dublin University and began teaching primary school in Wexford. He has lived and worked all over the world, including Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Italy. After the publication of the Artemis Fowl novels, Eoin retired from teaching and now writes full time. He lives in Ireland with his wife and two children.
Obviously, I'm not a kid. I just love this kind of book - magical, absorbing, and you don't have to worry about running into rated scenes.
The books are very entertaining (even for adults) and I just love the sarcasm of the intellectual characters. So, if you are the type who is into fairies, adventures, misadventures, top-secret missions, and sarcastic brainiacs who secretly have hearts, go for this set. You'll enjoy it. I promise.
I finished the entire set and all I could say is, "Does Arty really need to grow up? Does the adventure need to end here? *SPOILER* What happened after he was given birth by roses!?" I want answers but it appears that Arty has passed on the baton and gone to outer space.
Luckily for me, there's a new set of adventures coming. I can't wait to read about the twins.
"I liked how cerebral it was, and also funny. I liked that Artemis Fowl made a genius mastermind plan, how Kobi's pride was her downfall, and that everything came together at the end." -A, 12
Artemis Fowl is by far the best book series I’ve ever read, and it’s hard to imagine anything surpassing it. When I finished this series, my biggest problem was finding another great book to read—because I kept comparing everything to Artemis Fowl and knowing nothing could reach its level.
The main character, Artemis Fowl, is everything a reader dreams of: a genius with an unparalleled gift for strategy and planning, relentlessly working to achieve his goals. In a world of books where most protagonists are pushed around by other characters, Artemis is the rare character who pushes others—strong, intelligent, and unyielding in his pursuits. He gets what he wants and always finds a way to get it even going to extremes to achieve his goals. The challenges he faces throughout the series shape him, transforming him from a criminal mastermind into a man of value and kindness. I will never forget this evolution.
One of the standout qualities of Artemis as a character is his ability to learn from his mistakes. Unlike many modern protagonists who repeatedly make the same errors, Artemis not only learns from his mistakes but ensures he never repeats them. I started reading this series when I was in Class 12, and I often wish I could go back to that time and experience it all over again, free from the responsibilities of adulthood. One of my fondest memories of reading this series was when, in one of the books (I can’t recall which), Artemis overcame an impossible situation with a brilliantly executed plan. I remember jumping and running around my house, celebrating his genius—it was a moment that truly cemented my admiration for him as a character.
Conclusion This series holds a special place in my heart, and I can confidently say no other book has captured my imagination the way Artemis Fowl has. This series will always have a place in my heart forever.
-> Warning <- Spoilers ahead: One aspect I loved but wish we saw more of was Artemis’s romance with Holly Short. Despite this series not being tagged as a romance, their dynamic felt more genuine than anything I’ve seen in an entire romance novel. Their bond was perfectly written, subtle yet meaningful. The time-travel book (The Time Paradox) was my favorite in the series, as it gave us the brilliant scenario of Artemis and Holly matching wits against Artemis’s younger, colder self. It was fascinating to see how far he had come and the layers of complexity in his character. Another surprising moment in the series was when Artemis was stuck in time in one of the books (I can’t quite recall which), and he finally returned home to discover that his parents had given birth to twins, making him an older brother. Special shoutout to Butler—the best friend and bodyguard anyone could ever ask for—who always had Artemis’s back, no matter how difficult or risky his schemes and plots became.
Where to start? Perhaps with how excellently this series was written: the perfect blend of an easy-to-read style marked by its juvenile wit and humor that will endear itself to the kids, as well as deeper elements of character growth, complex moralities, and ingenious plotting that allow for it’s reaching an older audience of kids-at-heart. Reading this series was like eating a piece of cake, it was smooth, delicious, and I only ever wanted more! But perhaps you’re not interested in merely the writing, so perhaps I should start with the characters: I’m not sure I’ve met a cast of characters yet who have delighted me half so much as those belonging to the Artemis Fowl series. From the clever and slightly conflicted Artemis Fowl himself alongside the ever stalwart Butler to the courageous and caring Captain Holly Short, paranoid Folly, hot-tempered Root, and of course, good old Mulch Diggums. These characters had me laughing and cheering them on every step of the way as they team up with a colorful and diverse list of supporting characters to help thwart the schemes of villainous factions, from power hungry overlords and mob bosses down to the deviously cunning Opal Koboi. If there’s one thing I could never praise enough, it’s the cast. But then again, the plot! Shouldn’t I start with the plot: High stakes, hair-raising adventures, and radical missions all across the globe and under it! Quests to save the world that are so brilliantly bizarre that only the brilliant Artemis Fowl the second and his mismatched group of friends and fairies could pull it off. There are stake-outs, manor sieges, daring flights, cunning schemes, explosive escapes and risky dives into the unknown, oh, and did I mention the trolls?
I guess I don’t know where to start, so you’ll just have to read it for yourself.
Eoin Colfer's "Artemis Fowl Series" is an absolute treat for fans of fiction, fantasy, and science fiction. This incredible series captivated me from start to finish, leaving me in awe of its imagination and creativity.
The main character, Artemis Fowl, is brilliantly crafted and it was delightful to witness his growth from a cunning teenager to a remarkable young adult. The introduction of his alter ego, Orion, added unexpected humor and excitement to the storyline. However, it was Mulch Diggums, the underappreciated character, who truly tugged at my heartstrings.
Butler and Holly, along with Artemis, became my favorite characters through their strong presence and dynamic interactions. Sadly, the tragic ending of Julius Root left me feeling a profound sadness.
The series is packed with fast-paced action and numerous surprises, keeping me on the edge of my seat. The twists and turns were outstanding, surpassing my expectations at every turn. The high-tech inventions showcased throughout the story were incredibly fascinating—I found myself wishing they were real.
Opal Kobai, the masterful villain, deserves special mention for her brilliance and evilness. Although her actions were deplorable, I couldn't help but admire her cunning nature.
While the complexity of the science elements was overwhelming me as this is one of my first few science fiction books, for older readers, it might add an extra layer of depth and intricacy.
Overall, Eoin Colfer's "Artemis Fowl" series is an awe-inspiring and outstanding collection. It enthralled me with its gripping narratives, unforgettable characters, and remarkable world-building. This series deserves every accolade, and I commend Eoin Colfer for his exceptional storytelling abilities. Hats off!
The Artemis Fowl Collection is an 8-book series of Science Fiction and Fantasy, Adventure novels that my middle son introduced me to when he learned about them in middle school. Artemis began as an anti-hero that wanted to make his fortune through criminal activity against the Lower Elements Police Reconnaissance (LEP Recon) keepers of treasure.
Holly Short just so happens to be the elven first contact with the genius of Artemis, who becomes an avid adversary of the LEP, and Holly Short in particular. Throughout the 8 books, the initial animosity is quelled by the thought that he has needlessly imperiled Holly, and as the books continue, the animus becomes grudging respect, friendship, and more.
The books are titled: Artemis Fowl, The Arctic Incident, The Eternity Code, The Opal Deception, The Lost Colony, The Time Paradox, The Atlantis Complex, and The Last Guardian. Although the books are meant for children, there is a level of sophistication to these stories that would belie a title focused on adolescent literature.
I cannot say this enough, this series is a must read for anyone i ntheir formative years with a love for reading. I'ts been almost eight years since I read the series, but it still sticks with me to this day. I have a love for all things modern fantasy implanted in my brain because of this (and I think the descriptions of Holly impacted my tastes in women). Details from these novels still creep into my mind and I'm very much elated to own this set after so many years of being pried away from it.
As I said, this is a MUST READ. The entire series.
Helt fantastisk bogserie.
My dad read this series to me as a kid and I hated it. I was talking to him recently and found out that he also hated it, but that we had both continued to put up with it because we thought the other person was enjoying it hahahahaha.
Eoin Colfer is brilliant! Ever since The Legend of Spud Murphey, I was sold! All of the Aremis Fowl titles are insanely inventive and artistically told! Had to finish them all!
If I need to escape into a world of exciting, humorous adventure with touches of great heart, I listen to these books read by Nathanial Parker...again and again.
This is a well put together series that masterfully blends my three favorite genres: middle-grade, fantasy, and science fiction. Not every novel in the series is as good as the first one, but this series does a good job of setting the bar high and coming close with each installment. Well worth reading and it earned its place in my personal top 10 favorite series. -Keith Yagerman- author of Braxton Rogers and the Brave New Beyond
