"Felicity's thoughts went back and forth, in and out, until they were all tangled up in knots"The Merriman Family is splitting up (kind of). Mrs. Merriman, Nan, William, baby and Poppy are heading off to visit some distant relative while Felicity, her father, and his apprentice, Ben, are staying behind.
And Marcus doesn't fare much better.
"... so was Rose, the family servant, who was going along to help care for Polly."
It frustrates me because Rose being referred to as a "family servant" implies pay, and Marcus being a slave who "helped" at the store also downplays the forced servitude of slavery.
"Marcus was the slave who helped Father at the store..."
