Just after the second millennium a global nuclear war had transformed America into the Deathlands, Nothing was ever the same after that...
A DARK SHINING
Deep in the Outlands in Cerberus redoubt, Kane, a renegade Magistrate from the united baronies, experiences a shocking mind probe. It imprints him with a knowledge that propels him to the other side of the world, with the archivist Brigid and brother-at-arms Grant.
In the heart of Tibet, Kane's small group of Outlanders wages a perilous quest pursuing a legend, only to discover they are not alone in their search for the Chintamani Stone. The ancient relic has the power to conduct the final assault on the earth's destiny... or destroy the destroyers themselves.
Survival in the Outlands is an encounter with the end of hope.
The seventh book in the Outlanders series is another fantastic read, this time utilizing a character I’ve been waiting to hear more of: Balam, the Archon prisoner at Cerberus. As Kane and the gang go on a rescue mission for some other members of the team, mixing with the native Americans who claim the land around the redoubt, Balam takes control of his human handler while he’s sleeping to deliver a message to Kane.
Soon the message is delivered: a crazed Russian and his acolytes, including a hybrid human/Archon, are collecting pieces of a talisman that can shape reality and change the past. There are three pieces, and the team heads first to the ruins Manhattan, the on to Tibet to find the pieces before the other group.
Lots of great lore in this one, as Balam shows Kane a condensed history of the Archon race, and some major revelations are brought out into the open. The Archons actually garner a bit of sympathy here, as all their maneuvering had been to preserve their dying race; and Kane realizes that only human greed for power made people strike a deal with the Archons that eventually causes the nuclear war.
Also some great references to the old Deathlands book, as the natives show Kane a hidden war wag that is actually the stalled out wag of the Traders from the very first Seathlanda book.
Mark Ellis continues to surprise and delight in this series and looking forward to reading the Lost Earth Saga upcoming in the next 3 books.
This story brought revelations aplenty and lots of well executed interpersonal banter and even humor. The Kane/Beth-li/Brigid triangle was a riot and the best feature of the slow start to this story. There is a scene that takes place at the museum in the ruins of New York City that had me laughing! Very well written.
Set in the same world as the Deathlands series. These books follow another set of adventures in the post holocaust world. Good men's adventures series. Recommended
