"James Axler" was a house pseudonym used by Gold Eagle Books, the action adventure imprint of Harlequin Enterprises Ltd.

The pseudonym was first used for the Deathlands series, which began in 1986 with Pilgrimage to Hell, created by Christopher Lowder (under the pseudonym Jack Adrian) and co-written with Laurence James who continued Deathlands until retiring from the series in 1995.

At that point, prolific author and comics creator Mark Ellis took over the "Axler" pen name.

A busy comics creator in the 1980s and 90s, Mark created the popular Death Hawk character and also developed/created Star Rangers, The Justice Machine, Ninja Elite and The Miskatonic Project as well as working on such popular properties as Doc Savage, The Man From U.N.C.L.

The Spider Returns!

In the wake of
Bantam Books’ successful repackaging of the Doc Savage pulps as a
paperback book series in the mid-1960s, a number of other publishers
jumped on the band-wagon…but there really weren’t all that many
characters who enjoyed the longevity of Doc…THE SHADOW and THE
SPIDER were two pulp magazines with respectably lengthy runs, along
with G8 AND HIS BATTLE ACES and OPERATOR NO. 5.

“The boy is so stupid; to count to twenty-one he'd have to drop his pants.”

“The leader, a big-bellied Mexican wearing a huge sombrero, sat in a black saddle studded with silver conchos. Spurs jingled at the heels of his boots. A necklace of human ears hung from around his neck. The blood on them still looked fairly fresh.”
