Many of the editions by this group of authors are actually guides to books rather than the works.

If the author of the SparkNotes is known, they should be the first author. Please leave these SparkNotes Editors as the second author and the author of the original work as the last author. Do not combine with the original work. Do not put the author of the ORIGINAL work first.

During my undergrad, I had trouble with some books because I wasn’t sure how to say something that wasn’t just… part of the plot? Like Sense & Sensibility, it’s about money and how limited your options are if you don’t have any/enough, but… that’s just the plot, no? How do you say something wise and insightful when Austen is really clear with the argument she’s making? What do you add with your analysis that hasn’t already been said clearly by the book itself? Same with HP.

I thought this was fine for someone approaching analyzing literature for the first time. There was just one thing that really threw me. Sparknotes makes the claim that the unicorn in the forest died for her son. It’s been a while since I read the book, but I definitely don’t remember a unicorn son? If anyone else does, let me know. I’ll watch for it when I reread HP… If there is a son, I’ll upgrade the rating.
