“Jedi protect life and the light. We do not protect people from making stupid decisions. That might be beyond even the power of the Force. Do not expect perfection from others. The only choices you should seek to control are your own.”

Just as I was expecting, this comic was quite fun and breezy to read. However, I was not expecting all the collateral damage and pain those same fluffy little stories were gonna cause me.

Being a compilation of four short stories we have a variety of characters make their stellar appearances through them. That's as you would expect. Most of those stories being set before Light of the Jedi was the fact that brought me endless amounts of pain.

Seeing these beloved characters as they were before tragedy and heartache struck, seeing the contrast in them, well, it made everything terribly bittersweet and cloaked it with the sadness of hindsight and the nostalgia of times already long past.

They were still a lot of fun, yes, but the more I think about them the harder it all becomes.

“Droids are not Jedi. And Jedi are not droids. But we do have something in common. For us fear isn’t much of an issue.”

Still, the humor that they all shared was quite nice and uplifting.

Considering that the whole comic is pretty short, I was very happy to see the deep meanings that each story managed to convey and how much it all made me reflect. Since, after all, this was a story for the end of the year, the perfect time to reflect.

Out of the four stories the last one, set in the present time, left me unsettled and nervous enough to properly advance the overall plot of the general story.

It is not something that is necessary to be read to understand what is going on in the other books or what is to come, contrary to the role the comics usually play, but they are a great addition if you are as obsessed with this era as I am.

“There. Now you’re set for life. Just like you wanted. You have that life because of choices other people made – to help you, when you needed it. Perhaps something to consider, as you move along your path.”

This was, as expected, a nice little compilation of short stories that gave me life.

Perfect to close the year with.

I could use a nice, simple time in The High Republic era right about now.

This The High Republic Annual collects stories from all 5 authors of the initative, each telling us a snippet of history or present developments of the characters they know best.
Charles Soule's story about Bell and Loden hurts knowing what happens to them later on, but it sends a great message and filled my heart with so much joy. The art in this one is especially beautiful!
Claudia Gray's story about the Vessel crew subtly ties into The Fallen Star, which is a nice easter egg. The plot itself wasn't the greatest but I loved seeing the squad in action and Geode was the rockstar of this show, as always.
Justina Ireland's story about Stellan and Vernestra is giving me everything I've ever wanted! I've been dying to know more about Stellan training Vern and seeing them together is just absolutely incredible. I hope we get more of this in the future.
Daniel José Older's story seems to be a prequel to Midnight Horizon, as we know Crash is going to be a character in that book. I wasn't a fan of the art style compared to the other stories but I'm eager to see the role of this squad in the novel and I appreciate that we got to see them and get to know a bit about what they do. The Lina cameo with her Targons was great, too.
The last story in this collection is written by Cavan Scott and shows us Lourna intercepting a heist that includes a run-in with Porter Engle. This story has sublty placed connections to Tempest Runner that I really appreciate, and though the action was a bit hard to follow, I still loved seeing Lourna again!

All in all, this collection manages to tell 5 different but touching stories, each in just a few pages. While the quality of the art varies from story to story, the writing stays great throughout the entire annual and leaves me wanting more moments from our beloved characters' pasts!

A collection of very short comic stories, a good way to spend half an hour but nothing groundbreaking. Was great to see Affie and Leox brought to life from the "Into the Dark" novel. Also appearances from Loden, Bell and Porter.

”Do not expect perfection from others. The only choices you should seek to control are your own.”

3,5/5!

This annual was a nice collection of short comics following the High Republic characters we've come to know and love. Some stories take place before the books start (like the one where we see Stellan and Vernestra's first meeting) and some take place during the books and other comics, like the story with the crew of the Vessel.

All the stories were fun and I liked the artwork on all issues. But naturally I loved some stories more than the others. I've never been a huge fan of Lourna Dee, so even though I did like aspects of her story (mainly the surprise jedi guest), that issue didn't really stick with me. It was just okay. The stories following Loden and Bell, and Stellan and Vernestra were, however, awesome. Those two duos are some of my favorite master/padawan teams in the High Republic so seeing them before the events of the books and all their chaos was super fun. I especially liked seeing Stellan and Vernestra at the very beginning of their partnership since by the time of the books, Vernestra has already been knighted and while Stellan will forever be her master in a way, they are on more equal terms now that they are both independent knights and masters.

This was a fun read! Not the best HR comic content, but it was nice to see these characters again and to see more artwork on this era and its people.

Delightful read filling in some gaps amidst the stories in the books and enjoyable adventures featuring characters I've grown familiar with and fond of from reading in the High Republic-verse so far. I loved seeing a variety of art styles, the Crew was particularly distinct and I loved the maze in the story with Affie! It was particularly nice to see Bell and Loden having adventures in times before some of the more recent events...

A High Repulic annual.

A bunch of short stories from the writers of the High Republic era. Like any thing else done in this format some are better than other. Although considering how interconnected this particular era is it will be interesting to see if anything from thumbnails referenced or followed upon in the future.

I loved this! Loden Greatstorm and Bell Zettifar are my favorite characters in the high republic so far. I loved getting to see this mission they got to go on, and see Master Greatstorm teach his padawan an important lesson.
