His Perfect Gift

Rate this book
A reacquaintance with Miss Elizabeth Bennet and Christmas in London, what could go wrong?

Fitzwilliam Darcy is a man torn between choices. Having fled Hertfordshire with the singular goal of separating himself from the fine eyes and pert opinions of Miss Elizabeth Bennet, he finds himself face to face with her in London through a connection he never would have expected. He would like to abandon his reservations and court Miss Elizabeth, but other considerations are holding him back, including his family and friends, who might consider him honour-bound to another.

Following Mr. Bingley’s abrupt departure from Netherfield, Elizabeth Bennet accompanies her sister Jane to London to visit her aunt and uncle. A sudden reunion with the disagreeable Mr. Darcy is not in her plans, but the man she discovers is not the same one who insulted her so grievously at the Meryton Assembly. Instead, a doting brother and amiable gentleman calls upon her in Cheapside.

A quiet Christmas at Gracechurch Street with her aunt and uncle seemed ideal, but the inclusion of Mr. Darcy brings old acquaintances and conflicts neither expected.

Can Mr. Darcy convince his family and friends to choose Elizabeth? Could Elizabeth turn out to be his perfect gift?

A variation for the Christmas season.
Once again, Leslie L. Diamond has revealed her talent in providing a variation that has a unique beginning. Colonel Fitzwilliam serves up a shocking surprise to Darcy, who had very recently come from Meryton after separating Jane and Bingley and, himself fleeing from a pair of fine eyes.

I’m not quite sure what I think of this Bingley! I’m a fan of a strong Bingley and this portrayal is completely opposite! Wowsa! So different though, and I do love anything non-canon and eye raising! I loved this story and ODC’s courtship. Colonel Fitzwilliam is especially fabulous. Love him! Just in time for the Christmas season, I’m happy to recommend this seasonal novella.

I received an ARC of this book from the author with no promise of a review, favourable or otherwise.

I loved reading this book and the Audible version presents itself very well with the most talented Stevie Zimmerman. Her narration is outstanding, as always, and never disappoints.

Contains mature content between a married couple.

The thing that stands out about this story for me is how different Bingley was painted. If you love that character, you will not want to read this story.

The Colonel takes his cousin, Darcy, to visit the warehouse of a tradesman that his father deals with and recommends, who is able to procure various vines and other alcoholic beverages of a top quality. It turns out to be Mr. Gardiner's warehouse. Elizabeth happens to be there and thus ODC are again in each other's company. The men are invited to dinner and soon visits are being exchanged regularly. Georgiana is happy to meet Elizabeth and they are soon also friends.

Bingley is in town. He soon learns that his sisters did not inform him about Jane also being there. However this Jane is soon convinced that, with Caroline's behavior especially, a relationship with Mr. Bingley would not be a pleasant one as his sister would reside with them.

Then the matter of Caroline's "delusions" as to her relationship with and expectations of Darcy come into play. Much page space deals with her gossiping and manipulations attempting to bring about that goal. Bingley not only does nothing to stop her but is soon aiding and abetting her.

Meanwhile Darcy is now making every attempt to show Elizabeth that he is a better man than the impression he made upon her at the Meryton Assembly. Elizabeth finds he is a different man all together. Their relationship soon blossoms and they have the support of not only the Colonel but also his mother, Lady Fitzwilliam. She soon is making plans to promote Elizabeth and to undermine Caroline's words and actions.

Charles Bingley not only loses Darcy's friendship but we find he has a lot to answer for in other areas. The Hursts have more page time herein as we find Mr. Hurst taking action to counter those of his brother-in-law and sister-in-law. Spinster hysteria? What is that? Read to find out.

There is more than one intimate sexual scene between Darcy and Elizabeth so be warned...not all will want to read this story if that offends them.

I enjoyed this story.

Wonderful Xmas story

The story has a pace about it. It starts out slow with Lizzy and Jane visiting the Gardiners after the Netherfiel Ball. Darcy’s cousin Richard introduces Darcy to the Gardiners so Lizzy and Darcy are thrown together again. The pace is slow but one can actually feel it getting faster and faster until the end of the time in London happening at breakneck speed.

Totally fun story to read, hard to put down. All the characters are drawn just right and the surprises are a delight. Angst is set to low and there are some intimate adult scenes.

I felt like was reading one of her early P&P variations. Just a marvelous book.

This was my Jolabokaflod gift for December 24, 2022 and it was the 'perfect' choice! I could not put it down and read it in one afternoon/evening. Thank you Bronwen!

"The problem was he had no idea how to court a lady - how to please a lady worthy of being pleased." (quote from the book)

Right from the opening chapter, this novella gives us a unique twist. Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam surprises Mr. Darcy with an introduction to a tradesman just before Christmas. Little does he realize that Mr. Darcy knows the gentleman's nieces. One in particular he is trying to forget but failing spectacularly at it. What follows is a wonderful banter filled story that shows Elizabeth Bennet a different side to the taciturn man she knew in Meryton. Soon she is wondering if she is more like her mother than not...with the flutterings and beatings of her heart!

Needless, to say, there was much that I loved in this unique Christmas novella:
the gentle courtship of Elizabeth and Darcy
the ever charming Colonel Fitzwilliam
the scene stealing presence of Lady Fitzwilliam
the glorious set down of Caroline Bingley
the 'outside-box' approach to Charles Bingley
the ever dependable and gracious Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner

Yes, this will definitely be a re-read each Christmas for no present could match 'his perfect gift', Elizabeth.

I highly recommend it!

“If love is the greatest gift of all—and I believe it is—then the greatest privilege of all is to be able to love someone.” –Laura Schroff, An Invisible Thread

Rating: MA: language, mild swear words, until chapter 17 and we have a very descriptive and graphic wedding night and other encounters later. Not appropriate for young readers. Angst Level: for a while, it was low tempered with the hilarious banter between cousins. Then the antics of the Bingley siblings happened and we moved into the medium level. I wanted to shake someone. OMG! I was so upset. Source: I read and enjoyed the teaser chapters posted on the Jane Austen Variations website and later received an ARC from the author with no expectations of a review. The views expressed are my own.

SPOILER ALERT: This review may contain *** SPOILERS ***

“Unconditional love is the greatest gift we can ever give.” –Amy Leigh Mercree

This was hilarious and painful at the same time. The reader watched as Darcy struggled with the conflict between his pride and his feelings for an impertinent miss from Hertfordshire. Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam was delightful as he read Darcy’s pedigree and described… down to the insult… Darcy’s behavior while he was in Hertfordshire. He then compared Darcy’s rendition of the Bennet family and Meryton society with that of the ton. Oh, that was funny. I love it when Richard is the voice of reason. He was so smart. He could observe a situation, evaluate it, and have a battle plan of action within a few moments. Military life had honed his skills and he was as efficient as a sharpened scalpel in the hands of a skilled surgeon. I adored this characterization of Darcy’s cousin/brother. He also informed his clueless cousin that Miss Elizabeth did not like him. Let’s just say that Darcy was shocked. He had NO idea. Damage Control.

“Sometimes your dearest friend whom you reveal most of your secrets to becomes so deadly and unfriendly without knowing that they were not really your friend.” –Michael Bassey Johnson

Bingley: Oh, dear. This was the weak puppy Bingley characterization. He had no backbone, no courage, and was a coward. Several of the confrontations between Darcy and Bingley were painful. The Bingley fans will be hurt by his actions. He was constantly the foil for Richard who did not care for him one bit. And he cared even less for that sister of his. Richard was quick to point out that his parents, the Earl and Countess, were also displeased with his sister’s behavior as well. Bingley was shocked.

“Some bad friends are so crafty in such a way that by the time their mission is [revealed], they have already executed portions of it.” –Israelmore Ayivor, Leaders’ Frontpage: Leadership Insights from 21 Martin Luther King Jr. Thoughts

At one point, Bingley had the nerve to storm Darcy House and demand Darcy marry his pernicious sister or she would be ruined. He insisted that their names had been linked together in the ton over the years and it was expected that they marry. What a hypocrite. Had he not just done the same thing with Miss Bennet while he was in Hertfordshire? Their names had been linked together to the point of expectations. He left Hertfordshire and never returned because of the machinations of his sister. No, I did not like this Bingley.

“Be warned: A person content to sit with you and criticize others will speak critically of you out of earshot.” –Richelle E. Goodrich, Smile Anyway: Quotes, Verse, and Grumblings for Every Day of the Year

Caroline: Oh, girl, you have stepped in it now. Ladies and Gentleman… in this corner, wearing outrageous orange feathers, Caroline, The Mouth, Bingley. And, in this corner, Lady Fitzwilliam and the salacious gossip-seeking ton. Combatants will please observe the Marquis de Queensbury rules.

The General: Lady Fitzwilliam: Assemble the troops! Grab your bonnets and reticules, ladies, we are preparing for war. OMG! The acorn did not fall far from the tree. Now I know where Richard got his strategic moxie… from his mother. She was amazing as she waged war in the drawing rooms of the ton. She knew who to call on for best effect. What a woman.

Lord Fitzwilliam, Darcy, and Richard waged their own maneuvers at their clubs. They eventually contacted Mr. Hurst and he did some investigation of his own with surprising results. OMG! Fitzwilliam was stunned and hurt that Bingley would treat their friendship in such a manner. My jaw hit the floor. Man… that was brutal.

“Forgiveness is the one gift you don’t give to others. Rather, it is the gift you give to yourself, so you can finally be free.” –Shannon Alder

Since there wasn’t an epilogue, I have no idea what happened to other characters. But then this wasn’t their story, was it? I highly recommend this for a delightful HEA with ODC. Swoon-worthy fan points, heavy sigh.

This felt a bit mediocre to me. Bingley, and especially Caroline, were way too OTT. I guess I can see her Darcy fixation being an obsession, but I couldn’t buy her actions. Making calls as Mrs Darcy? Physically attacking someone in a crowded ballroom?

I’m not sure L.L. Diamond’s writing style is my cuppa tea. Does anyone have a recommendation by this author?

A Gentle Christmas Romance Turns Into An Epic London Showdown

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Source: Gift from Author

TYPE OF NOVEL: Pride and Prejudice Variation

THE PREMISE: Elizabeth accompanies Jane to London to spend the holiday season with the Gardiners and unexpectedly encounters Mr. Darcy, whose relations are long-time acquaintances and customers of Mr. Gardiner’s. An intensely besotted Mr. Darcy decides to no longer fight his attraction for this impertinent miss and seizes the opportunity to court Elizabeth properly and win her love. But some in Darcy’s circle are violently opposed to that decision…

WHAT I LOVED:

- Christmas + L.L. Diamond: Another holiday inspired story byL.L Dimaond? Sign me up! I adored Unwrapping Mr. Darcy (a contemporary P&P inspired romance) and It’s Always Been You and Me (a contemporary Persuasion inspired romance). Both were enjoyed in previous Decembers (2018 and 2020) and I wouldn’t mind if this started to become a yearly tradition!

- Familial Connections: I loved witnessing all the pleasing familial relationships and interactions in this tale. I loved seeing the Fitzwilliams so agreeably engaged with the Gardiners and seeing Mr. Darcy and Georgiana, in turn, develop their own connections to Elizabeth’s dearest relations. As well as seeing Elizabeth and Georgiana begin their own blossoming friendship.

- Colonel Fitzwilliam: (SLIGHT SPOILER ALERT!) I think he is the MVP in this tale! I just love when he is Mr. Darcy’s confidant and calls him out on being obstinate, proud, or overly concerned with the ton’s opinion or doing his duty. And in this instance, I thoroughly enjoyed his provoking behavior towards Mr. Bingley. I loved exploring this dynamic where Colonel Fitzwilliam and Mr. Bingley hold some animosity towards each other. And it was especially interesting to see that animosity grow and extend to other members in their respective families.

- Darcy and Elizabeth: Without any prior proposals and uncivil exchanges, Darcy is easily able to prove himself a worthy gentleman and revise Elizabeth’s previously formed opinions about him. I love seeing Darcy play the part of determined-yet-patient suitor. How could Elizabeth not fall in love with him? I also enjoyed all their tender moments alone during their courtship, and a few after their marriage (NOTE: There is two brief romantic interlude towards the end that are best suited for Mature Audiences)

WHAT I WASN’T TOO FOND OF:

- Small Quibbles: I wouldn’t have minded some more time spent with some developments – such as Mr. Darcy’s easy capitulation to court Elizabeth, the alterations to Mr. Bingley’s circumstances, behavior, and morals, and the reasons for Caroline’s desperation and delusions. I think a little more fleshing out in these areas would have strengthened these alterations and increase their plausibility. In addition, sometimes the dialogue felt a little too forward/blunt for the time period.

CONCLUSION: Christmas festivities with the Gardiners, a romance unfettered by misunderstandings and misapprehensions, and an epic showdown between a prestigious titled family of ton and weak-willed, selfish upstarts – sounds like a most engaging and entertaining variation, doesn’t it? With His Perfect Gift, author L.L. Diamond once again delivers a story that beautifully blends clever developments, heartwarming relationships, and ardent romance! I definitely recommend!

This book is a gift! It has an amazing combination of romance, revenge, intimacy, and wit. After the Netherfield ball, but before Christmas, Elizabeth Bennet has occasion to meet Fitzwilliam Darcy in London. To her amazement, he is a much different man and showing interest in her. He spends his time proving he is not the jerk he was in Hertfordshire while also holding off an attack on his reputation. Their growing love and relationship finds a happily ever after for themselves and many around them with the support of their family.

As always, this author leaves me smiling in wonderful feelings and beautiful imagery. I loved it!

Nice holiday-ish novella. I’ve been reading Christmas themed Pride & Prejudice novellas throughout December and this was a nice finish to month.

Spoilers….!

Jane and Elizabeth are in London with the Gardiners when they are reacquainted with Darcy and Colonel Fitzwilliam. They spend a lot of time together attending dinners and the theatre together.

Angst comes in the form of Bingley and Caroline. Mr Gardiner is hesitant in having Bingley reacquaint himself with Jane. Jane likewise doesn’t seem very enthusiastic in seeing him again after he left Netherfield so abruptly.

Darcy and Bingley have a major fall-out.
Caroline is desperate to have Darcy as her husband and takes drastic steps to ensnare him.
Lord and Lady Matlock assist Darcy and Elizabeth in introducing Lizzy to society. There’s a masquerade ball!
I love when there’s balls, parties etc included in the story.

We find out that Bingley has a bit of a gambling problem and he’s practically ruined. This was a very different Bingley from canon and was a bit of a surprise.

First and foremost, I loved this book and it will have a place on my reread shelf. From beginning to end I thought the story was fantastic. Some unique situations, and also some familiar scenarios to JAFF but brought about in a twisty way. I wanted to start all over again and read it from the beginning, right away!

I always like/love a sophisticated and more 'connected' Mr. & Mrs. Gardiner through Mr. G's business and/or Mrs. G's connection to the ton through her charity work. And I will always love a good/supportive/happy Mr. & Mrs. G. They were wonderful in this story.

I love a clever, manipulative, downright funny, and loyal Colonel Fitzwilliam. AND I love it when his parents are also on Darcy's side when it comes to his choice of wife. I got both gifts in this story.

The Bingleys depicted in Diamond's story, His Perfect Gift, are wildly over the top. I like it when Charles grows a backbone, but if you're going to make him spineless why not go ahead and make him a real b____rd while you're at it too. Whoa! Oh my gosh, Charles and Caroline B. were a shock in this story. BUT...BUT...WAIT! I also really like it when Hurst shows up (instead of the drunken, over indulgent stupor we usually see him in,) in support of his wife, and in this particular case to protect his future-including his wife. Danged clever plot piece that.

I suspect Ms. Diamond had to make some major cuts to fit the essential story within the Christmas season novella size. But I'm a fan of epilogues, and I wish we could've seen what happened to Jane after Darcy and Elizabeth are wed and go off to live at Pemberley. I had kind of a hope that a certain someone was going to court her, and maybe in my universe he will.

The romance was superb, pretty spicy in places, adult spicy. Like others have stated in their reviews; if you don't like a really bad Bingley you won't enjoy this. I cannot recommend this highly enough to JAFF lovers except for those statements just now.

Thank you Leslie for lending me read your book.

What a nice one! Such a lovely Christmas variation. I do like how she designs her characters without falling apart from those of Austen.
I really enjoyed each page, but this part make my heart to jump.

“Yes, that is Pemberley during my grandfather’s time. Not much has changed, but perhaps the rose garden my mother added, as well as the cascade. What do you think? Do you approve?”
She glanced at him over her shoulder. “I believe there are few who would not approve.”
“But I do not seek their opinion. I fear I care only for yours.”

Can't wait to read the rest of her books, and to translate some of them for 2022 into Spanish!

A Perfect Gift to Ms Diamond’s fans

What an enjoyable and interesting story to step away from the stress of the holidays (and Covid-19 and politics and supply chain problems and … ). It was a new (to me) and different interpretation of Bingley that I really liked.

Only a couple of nits, one minor and one more of a request. The book was well-edited, but the minor nit was Elizabeth seeing the “plane trees” in the park. The request is that I would have liked to see at least some hint of a future HEA for Jane and also Col. Fitzwilliam, though not necessarily with Jane. A sequel perhaps?

Highly recommended to JAFF readers.

Sometimes all that is required to convince a person to pursue their heart’s desire is to present evidence that it is not, in fact, an impossible achievement. In His Perfect Gift—the latest Pride and Prejudice variation from prolific Austenesque author L.L. Diamond—our hero considers the possibility of becoming the kind of man who is capable of pleasing a woman worthy of being pleased and earning her esteem.

Fitzwilliam Darcy has escaped Hertfordshire with great haste, along with his friend Bingley, following the ball at Netherfield, keenly feeling the danger he’d been in and hoping to soon forget the cause: the enchanting Miss Elizabeth Bennet. “Was there nothing that would spare him the torment of her memory?” (Loc 84) In an attempt to lighten Darcy’s dismal disposition, his cousin Colonel Fitzwilliam persuades him to journey to Cheapside for an introduction to the proprietor of a business the colonel has invested in. Darcy reluctantly relents, only to discover his trials are just beginning. “Here she was, standing before him.” (Loc 209)

Elizabeth has traveled with her sister Jane to Cheapside to spend Christmastide with their aunt and uncle Gardiner, hoping the lighthearted festivities may heal Jane’s heartache over Bingley’s sudden departure. An unexpected encounter with Bingley’s prideful friend leaves her dismayed. “Was she to spend her entire stay in London in the society of Mr. Darcy? Whatever grievous sin had she committed to deserve such a fate?” (Loc 319)

With the comfortable company and encouragement of their more observant and gracious relations, Darcy becomes determined to demonstrate his more amiable character to Elizabeth, who begins to admire the man she once disliked. But something wicked this way comes—in surprising forms and with unforeseen consequences—as “desperate people commit stupid acts.” (Loc 2206) Will Darcy and Elizabeth’s newfound comfort and joy save them from those who have gone astray?

I love a good Yuletide tale almost as much as I love Pride and Prejudice variations, so the combination of the two was of instant interest to me. Although this story was entertaining, it was very light on the Christmas spirit, much to my disappointment. It was also a bit disconcerting to see a normally affable character going rogue. Even so, I enjoyed the role played by a particularly witty and supportive Colonel Fitzwilliam, and I delighted in the devoted relationship of our dear couple and the caring connections they made with each other’s families.

Fans of Jane Austen variations will appreciate the unique turn of events and sigh-worthy happily-ever-after in His Perfect Gift.

Just wasn't feeling it

I have to give credit for another well written book by this author. I've been a big fan after reading several of her works, but this one disappointed me. Elizabeth and Jane go to London to stay with the Gardiners after the Netherfield ball. Jane is nursing a broken heart after Bingley's desertion, and Elizabeth is escaping her mother after refusing Mr Collins. Darcy is also in London, and is pining away for Elizabeth, even though he still feels she's not worthy of him. Colonel Fitzwilliam introduces Darcy to the Gardiners, since Mr Gardiner has been supplying him with good liquor for a while, and Elizabeth and Darcy are reunited in this way.

I have a couple of issues with the book. One is the way the characters of Darcy and Elizabeth are drawn. Darcy wants Elizabeth, but feels that she's below him in social standing. All it takes is one little hint that Colonel Fitzwilliam thinks he should try to win Elizabeth's good opinion, and that does it, he's a changed man. I don't like this wishy washy Darcy, who lets someone else decide his course - too much like Bingley.

Then there's Elizabeth, who's always experiencing flutterings, and often thinks she might swoon. Way too much like Mrs Bennett to be attractive. She changes her mind about Darcy pretty quickly, and then turns into Lydia as soon as she's got her man. She becomes quite the little coquette for a Regency era maiden. I was missing our beloved Elizabeth who could never be so prissy.

My other issue is with the premise of the story. The major variance of the book focuses on Charles and Caroline Bingley. They're both major villains, trying to force Darcy into marrying Caroline, and the whole situation is completely ludicrous. I thought that the whole idea of the Bingleys being able to wield so much influence, and hold so much power over Darcy was just laughable, and yet everyone acts as if their claims on Darcy could actually do some harm. I just wasn't buying it.

These issues frustrated me enough that I just wanted to get through the book as soon as possible. Although it's well written and well edited, I can't really recommend it.

Bros to Foes

Synopsis:
A week or so after Darcy quits Netherfield, Colonel Fitz takes him to the Gardiner’s shop were he has a stake to get some Imported booze. Darcy notes the houses are fashionable despite his assumption otherwise, and meets Mr Gardiner and sees he is everything intelligent and amiable. Thus Darcy sees Lizzy's connections are not so bad, and begins to court her. The impediment to their felicity? The Bingleys and their designs on Darcy's wealth.

The Brass Tacks:
Not the best L.L. Diamond. There is a weak plot, a lot of stuff I found hard to credit, and houses a not in the least bit intimidating villain; like come on, who is going to be worried about the puppy Bingley? Scrappy from Scooby-Doo is more intimidating a puppy than he.

The ODC relationship sees a 180 right off the bat, with a Darcy suddenly eager to please. Lizzy gets so discombobulated by the taciturn man turning from beast to prince that she looses most of her wit and boldness, and becomes a blushing rose. I do enjoy when Darcy courts Lizzy properly, but I’ve seen it done better before, 'His Uncles Favorite' comes to mind.

I prefer Caro to be a calculating, clever villain, rather than a sloppy, insane harpy. I think if she lost Darcy she would simps regroup and find her next target, not totally implode her entire rep. Bingley’s turn doesn't make any sense either, They were never established as a valid threat.

This was fairly boring and forgettable. L.L. Diamond is one of my favorite JAFF authors, but this was quite bland. I recommend her other works.

I forgot how much I enjoy LL Diamond's books. I am rereading all her books and rediscovered this book. This book is set entirely in London after Elizabeth rejects Mr. Collins. Both Lizzie and Jane go to London to avoid their mother. The Colonel and the Fitzwilliam know Mr. Gardiner for his import business and him servicing the rich and royalty. Darcy is able to have a second change with Lizzie and spend the Christmas time together learning more about each other. This novel takes Bingley down a different path, that I rarely seen taken. Other than Miss. Bingley, there is not a lot of trouble for ODC

Amazing! Love this Darcy!

Another great book by LL Diamond. In reading the first chapters online, I knew I would love it. Bought it as soon as I could! Love love love this Darcy! It was hard to go through some of the heart ache, but totally worth it. Was a little perturbed with Lizzy, but she came around to the right frame of mind quickly!!!
Thank you Leslie!! Will be rereading!!!

Lovely dialogue and witty setdowns abound in this alternate universe where our dear couple find each other in London, shortly after Darcy leaves Hertfordshire following the Netherfield ball. Caroline is trouble and some characters are surprising, but no spoilers here. A fun story.

MY Perfect Gift

The author must have read my mind and this story is my perfect gift from the author. I've always wanted to read a story where 1) Darcy makes his pursuit of Elizabeth his priority. 2) He doesn't allow anyone, including Bingley and Caroline, to insult Elizabeth. 3) Elizabeth is also besotted and open to Darcy's advances. 4) Darcy wakes up to how immature Bingley is. 5) Bingley's consequences.

There have been plenty of stories that have these elements, but normally 4 and 5 is missing. This was nicely done without a lot of misunderstandings and I didn't have to wait until the end for an HEA. The Bingley situation tipped the scales for me. I have waited so long for something like that and I finally got it! The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 was I was not a fan of the ballroom scene. I can do without psychotic characters, it was a bit too much IMHO.

To sum it up, I loved this Darcy and Elizabeth and how the author showed their love and attraction for each other. Overall, I thought it was a cute and satisfying story.

Premise: A cute Christmas novella. Mr Darcy meets Elizabeth in London during the Christmas season and learns Mr Gardiner is a very successful tradesman with clients including the Prince of Wales and his own uncle. With jocular encouragement from Colonel Fitzwilliam, he decides to woo Elizabeth. But a bad!Bingley and cuckoo!Caroline have other plans...

What I liked: This was a fun, sweet holiday read with a touch of spice.

Characterization: Darcy wises up very quickly. Elizabeth also quickly alters her perception after learning some truths. Bingley is a weak wastrel. Caroline is literally mad.

Spice level: Medium to hot. A couple of open door post-marriage scenes (and ODC seem to have an aversion to the actual bedchamber, ha!) that are mostly euphemistic.

Any non-canon parings:

Other notes or issues: Would have worked nicely as a full length novel. The climactic scene at the ball felt a bit rushed.

I didn’t enjoy this due to a dishonorable Mr Bingley and an insane, literally, Caroline Bingley. Jane ends up alone which I never like in JAFF.

i liked it but I didn’t love it.

I like seeing an OOC Bingley, and this one played out well. Various characters discuss betrayal again…and again, which grew old, but that was contained to the middle of the book. I wish I could explain why I don’t love the book. I like it, and that will have to be enough.
