Impulsive Marianne Dashwood and cautious Elinor are as different as two sisters could be, yet both are shattered by their father’s sudden death. Elinor’s attachment to the reserved Edward Ferrars is torn asunder by family opposition and his own dark secret, while Marianne’s brilliant romance with the dashing John Willoughby comes to a tumultuous end in a devastating public betrayal. Can the two sisters overcome these trials to find true, lasting happiness?
Jane Austen’s beloved first novel, filled with romance, redemption and social critique, is brought to life for a modern audience in this gorgeous manga-style adaptation!

Sense & Sensibility – Manga Classics- by Jane Austen and Stacy King- is a 2016 UDON entertainment publication.
Sense & Sensibility is Jane Austen’s first novel, written anonymously. The tale primarily evolves around two sisters, Marianne and Elinor Dagwood, one of which is dreamy eyed, insisting on holding out for a man with charisma, while Elinor takes a more sensible approach.
Although the sisters meet and fall in love with men matching their personas, both will experience disappointment and heartbreak. Will they ever find true love?
When I first began familiarizing myself with Manga, I discovered many classic novels have been converted into the Manga format. At first, I was a bit skeptical, however, once I tried a couple of these Manga Classics, I realized what a great idea this was. The authors and artists are highly respectful to the original, while breathing new life into these timeless classics.
For those who are fans of the classics, this is a great way to revisit them. The artwork is always fantastic, and it is fun to see these characters visualized in such a way. If you have never read these classic stories, the Manga version is a gentle, and entertaining way to introduce oneself with the beloved stories that have endured for so long.
The story itself is a classic romance, full of high drama, twists and angst. Good sense wins out in the end, as does true love.
This delightful story is condensed down a bit in this format, but the author did a terrific job with what couldn’t have been an easy task. Overall, this is a great way to touch base with your favorite classics in less time, while enjoying the amazing visuals that accompany the story.
Set in the countryside of 17th century, this Manga Classic is beautifully executed.
The Dashwood sisters - Elinor and Marianne are like two opposite faces of the same coin. Elinor Dashwood is reserved, composed and cautious while the younger sister Marianne is expressive, emotional and volatile. Nonetheless, they both share a strong bond and deep affection for each other. Their bond strengthens further as the story advances especially when they both suffer from heartbreak.
Elinor fell in love with Edward Ferrars but she kept her feelings hidden that even Edward was doubtful of her feelings towards him. Marianne fell for the handsome Mr. Willoughby and the whole town chattered about them. Both extreme in their nature, the sisters finally learned to balance between sense and sensibility in the end.
What I loved the Most! The artists have done really good research on every single detail of the story. From characters to the fashion of that era. The flowing gowns and bonnets. The detailing of the traditional furniture. Beautiful carriages.
Absolutely incredible! I loved reading this Manga Classic so much
I received an ARC of this book from Udon Entertainment via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This manga reimagining of Jane Austen's classic romantic tale was brilliantly rendered in black-and-white imagery, which depicted the characters with a mixture of anime style features and regency era dress. The story remained true to the original, if some of the emotions were more heightened, and this would make both a brilliant introduction to Austen's classics or a lovely way to revisit her renowned tale.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the author, Stacey King, and the publisher, Udon, for this opportunity.
I'm giving this 5 stars not because of the story; but because of how the illustrations done by Po Tse, and on how good Stacy King was able to squeezed into 300 pages the entire tale of this classic story. The story of Sense & Sensibility is a typical romance story, which we could still read on some pocketbook novels nowadays. If I could the story alone, I would only give it 4 stars. I neither like it nor hate it; but I admit that I like some characters in the story especially Elinor and Colonel Brandon. I was even rooting for them but in the end, Austen still paired Colonel Brandon with Marianne.
I knew I would enjoy the illustrations, but was surprised to find I enjoyed the story as well. I, likely, would not have chosen to read this book had it not been available as a Manga Classic. Much love to NetGalley and Udon Entertainment for my DRC.
Manga Classic: Sense and Sensibility was a solid 4 stars. As a huge Jane Austen fan, I was really excited to read this in manga form and I definitely wasn’t disappointed. Manga Classic: Sense and Sensibility stays true to the original book and centers around the lives of the Dashwood women, particularly sisters Marianne and Elinor. I’d highly recommend this to fans of any age that enjoy manga and classic books. As with all the Manga Classics I’ve read so far, the artwork is gorgeous and the story is easily conveyed to readers. Thank you NetGalley for proving me a review copy.
I have loved the works of Jane Austen ever since I read them for the first time as a young teen. Sense and Sensibility is one of my favorite books! I'm always a bit hesitant to read adaptations for fear of being disappointed. But the artwork in this book caught my eye and I was curious about a manga adaptation of this classic novel. I'm so glad I took a chance and read this book! The art is wonderful! And it is faithful to Austen's book for the most part.
This manga classic reads like most manga...from right to left. It has a couple introductory pages to explain how to read the book properly, so this edition is a great gift for someone new to manga. There is nothing inappropriate for teens in this book, just as in Austen's novel. It is Sense and Sensibility, just presented in a new manner.
Udon Entertainment and Morpheus Studios have published several other manga classics including Jane Eyre, Great Expectations, and the works of Edgar Allan Poe. I'm definitely going to read more in this classics series!
Great book! Faithful to the original! And the art is wonderful!
**I voluntarily read a review copy of this book from Udon Entertainment. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.**
I feel like this entry in the Manga Classics series took a few more liberties than the ones I've read before. In particular, Fanny is much more of an overt villain than the much more subtle snob she is in the book. I didn't particularly care for the art, either. It's basically manga standard, but it isn't particularly good manga standard, either. But it is a basically decent and to the point adaptation, even so.
I did it! I read my first manga in the correct format and didn’t give myself a headache! 😅 Of course, it’s perfectly poetic that I started with an Austen adaption. 😆I liked it a lot, but I just wasn’t expecting it to be such a quick pace through the story. I love the slow burn of Austen, so I missed that in this format. However, it was a fun format for sure.
Although I'm a Jane Austen fan, I don't find particullary charming Sense and sensibility (but I love Ang Lee's screen adaptation). This Manga, however, is fantastic. The artwork is so beautiful... The story is there but with changes, of course (which doesn't bother me at all). As all these Manga Classic adaptations, is a great one.
I loved this manga adaptation of Jane Austen's classic story! The manga follows the original story pretty closely, and the artwork is beautiful.
There's a lot of crying in this book! I mean, I suppose there's a lot of crying in the original story too, but seeing almost all the characters constantly collapsing into violent tears, hysterics, and/or fits of depression was over-the-top dramatic. Then again, Marianne Dashwood is the epitome of drama! haha!
The artwork is really lovely, and I liked seeing all the pretty costumes of the ladies. The villains and nasty people, like Lucy Steele, have ugly grotesque expressions sometimes that just make you hate them. I love the way the artwork really enhances the characters!
I think it's brilliant how the story is condensed into manga format without losing the integrity and feeling of the original story. I enjoyed revisiting this story, and loved reading this manga!
Update April 2022: I've reread this manga again, and loved it even more the second time!
Disclaimer: I received an ecopy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a free and honest review. All the opinions stated here are my own true thoughts, and are not influenced by anyone.
This was my third of the Manga Classics series. I was eager to pick it up and experience one of Jane Austen's classic tales told in Manga graphic novel format after finding the last two engaging. I thought the adaption did well grasping the heart of Jane Austen's story both with words and art.
The story is abridged to meet its new format, but covers the well-worn path of the Dashwood ladies losing husband and father and home in two quick blows. Their older brother, Mr. John Dashwood, ignores honor and allows them to fend for themselves and leave their home to accept the kindness of a distant relation. But not before Elinor encounters her sister in law's brother, Mr. Edward Ferrars and falls for him. They quietly part and Elinor hopes Edward will come to visit her and her family where they are going.
Once installed in Sir John Middleton's Barton Cottage on the Devon coast, the Dashwood ladies live quietly. They are part of the neighborhood's small society. The teasing and gossip of the Middletons and Mrs. Jennings are balanced by the quiet friendship of Colonel Brandon. Marianne is not taken with the staid Colonel who is vastly overshadowed by the dashing John Willoughby who comes to her rescue due to a rainy day fall.
Marianne, unlike her sister, is not circumspect with her feelings. Everyone believes that she and Willoughby are a couple including her until the day he leaves with no promise of a return. Marianne is devastated, but Elinor is equally devastated to learn Edward is secretly betrothed to the Middleton's houseguest, Lucy Steele.
Can it get worse? It does. Both sisters are faced with heartbreaking trials and must come through them to find their happiness.
I enjoyed this adaption of the story. It was neat to see the artist renderings of favorite characters and scenes. The emotion and expression were clear as was the attention to period detail. The storyline was engaging. There were a few blips of modern speech, but for the most part it was a nice balance of summation type narration and dialogue.
I do love this series of Manga and recommend it to those who want to try a classic story in visual art and word. It was fun to experience the Manga format of reading right to left and art style. Austenesque lovers and those who wish to ease into an exploration of the classics would probably enjoy this one.
I received this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
This is my third manga classic of the year and like the others, the first thing I want to say is how cute the art style is! It's so beautiful and warm and adorable and totally brings you into the story.
Now, as for the story itself, I didn't find myself as connected to it as I was to Jane Eyre but I did enjoy Sense and Sensibility nonetheless, despite not having read the original work by Jane Austen. But despite not being as connected to the characters as I would have liked, I did find myself rooting for Elinor's happy ending all throughout the graphic novel.
The plot was also filled with a lot of melodrama which is understandable since it's Jane Austen but sometimes it did get a bit much for me and I found myself confused with what exactly was going on.
Overall this was an incredibly quick and entertaining read and I totally recommend this if you like classics, graphic novels, romance and drama.
I want to give a huge thank you to NetGalley and Udon Entertainment for providing me an eARC in exchange for a honest and unbiased review.
Synopsis: This is an adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. This manga lets you read a modernized version of the story and view artwork at the same time. Marianne and Elinor are completely two different women. Both women are trying to cope with the sudden loss of their father. Sense and Sensibility explores the lost in their lives. This book also explores romance in both of their lives and how heartbreaking love can be. The sisters face a huge public betrayal and are devastated. Can these two women overcome their battles? Can they pick up the broken pieces? Read this classic manga adaptation to find out.
Review: Wow. This book was filled with intense emotion and you really could feel the character’s emotions. I loved seeing how these two totally different women lived their lives after their loss. When I read this book a long time ago I couldn’t really grasp everything. I enjoyed how this was a more modernized version of the story. I feel this book is great for students and for young readers who want to experience this story with an easier and quicker feel. The reason I didn’t give this book 5 stars is because I didn’t enjoy the artwork as much as a previous manga classic I read but it might just be my preference. This still was a great adaptation and I definitely recommend it to Jane Austen fans and/or manga lovers!
Hope everyone has a great day! Happy Reading Dudes and Dudedettes
This is my favorite of the Jane Austen books from Manga Classics. They didn't let the actual point of the book slide the way they did with Emma, and they didn't have anyone calling anyone else by an anachronistically incorrect name the way they did in Pride and Prejudice. The artwork was awesome, and the storytelling was spot on.
I really loved how they used hairstyles to highlight the personality differences between Elinor and Marianne. Marianne has loose, flowing, sometimes untamed hair, while Elinor's is always pulled into a well-contained bun. That really suited them, and I enjoyed learning from the afterword that Po Tse deliberately designed their hairstyles to represent them in exactly that way!
I wish that this series would do Austen's other three major novels, too. It looks like right now, they're focusing on releasing modern language versions of the Shakespeare titles in their stable, but maybe they'll return to Austen one day?
First things first: I received this book through NetGalley.
So far, I think this is my least favorite of these Manga Classics. I still loved the way the story was told and I still loved the art work. The story itself, just wasn't for me. What I really really loved, though, was the relationship between the two sisters, I think that that was pretty much my favorite thing about the whole story.
I have the actual book in my book shelve, maybe reading the story more in depth will be different. I'm not sure.
I had different issues with this book, starting with the art style. It’s too much: I couldn’t feel the “Austen” atmosphere in these pages because of the drawings. The characters seemed like weeping all the time and their hair was everywhere. There were a lot of scenes difficult to read and appreciate. The main protagonists, Marianne and Elinor, showed just some parts of their souls: Marianne seemed too selfish and impulsive, while Elinor seemed too flat, even if the “solo” scenes can descrive her thoughts very well. I don’t know why, but the characters weren’t so attractive for me.
The story is really complicated and the authors chose the right scenes to show, but some part seemed too quick.
There was an over-dramatic vision of this world, without the right explications about marriage, heritages and society customs. It was too much all together, without pre-warnings. Can you understand what I mean? I hope so.
However, the idea of Manga Classics is fantastic. Young people, or manga reader who usually doesn’t read classics, can find something interesting to read and appreciate, opening their world to something new as other genres or other passions.
I thank Udon and Netgalley, I received an arc of this manga in exchange for an honest review.
This being my sixth Manga Classics I knew I was in for a treat when I saw Sense & Sensibility appear on Netgalley. Like the other installments in the series, this manga adaptation reads very fast but still manages to transfer the story quite well.
I'm not a particularly big fan of the Jane Austen I've read so far, and I have to admit that all my knowledge about Sense & Sensibility come from a movie adaptation I saw ages ago. Of course, the story is shortened as to fit it in the limited size of the manga, but I still think the characters of the sisters where portrayed well.
I will be on the lookout for more manga adaptations (Jane Eyre is next on the list)!
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
Not your usual retelling of Sense and Sensibility, but I have to say, it's my favourite in this Manga Series. I've been pretty happy overall with the series - it helped me appreciate Emma more to start, but it also helped reawaken my love for my first Austen novel - S&S.
It's the standard story, condensed, but it does give some insight I missed when I first read S&S all those years ago. I had never realized until reading this that their mother is just as ridiculous as most of the ladies in this story.
I'm very pleased with this retelling, and wish that Austen's remaining novels were also converted to this format!
I enjoyed it greatly! I am guilty, why? I have not read sense and sensibility the book! I know shame on me, but I have to admit I am glad I read it in this format first. It gave me the feel of the story with incredible art. This was also my firts manga and it took me a while to get into it but eventually I did and the experience became enjoyable. I am exited to read the book now thanks to this! I recommend it!
My first manga, that too an adaptation of one of my favorite authors, Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, and I immensely enjoyed reading this. Getting used to the manga format was a little difficult at first, but after a few pages got used to it, and it was kind of fun reading backwards, as I am intrigued to check the last few pages quite often.
To bring out visually, all the thinking Austen's characters do, is quite a difficult task, the personality of the characters develop in our imagination after several lengthy thoughts in the mind of the lead characters. Po Tse's illustrations is beautiful, and bring out the personality of the characters well represented visually. Stacy King has scripted well keeping the original story intact and not missing the important events.
Marianne's transformation from an emotional, frank and open person to becoming a more sensible person is a beautiful journey, especially when she forgives Willoughby on knowing his dark secret and moving on.
It was a great experience reading this adaptation, and I am definitely interested in trying the other classics as well.
I continue to boast about this collection of Manga Classics because they're just so good! While Sense and Sensibility, while isn't one of my favourites of Jane Austen's, I do adore the sisterly relationship at the centre of the story. And this Manga adaptation was just a splendid read. Po Tse illustrates Elinor and Marianne so well, capturing their stark differences in looks and manners. A lot happens in Sense and Sensibility and it was so well condensed without feeling like there was anything missing. It was a great adaptation of yet another Jane Austen classic and I loved it. I only wish now that they would do Northanger Abbey, Persuasion and Mansfield Park so I can have a complete set!
I liked this version of the classic novel (Which I haven't read, don't know why). The expressions were wonderful, some just on the borderline of funny. I loved Elinor's dress. I was trying hard to read the dialogues and not stare and the dress. It was so simple and sophisticated, just like her. Every character, no matter their personalities had to take decisions based on sense and logic. This comic is urging me to read the novel now, so a plus point!
I'm not at all a very experienced manga reader, so I figured starting with a classic story I already know and love is a good way to give it a try. I previously read the manga adaptation of Jane Eyre as well, and I quite enjoyed that, but I have to say, I liked this one even better. Both Jane Eyre and Sense and Sensibility are some of my favourite classics, but I think this manga was maybe a little more accessible, because it drew me in right away, and it read quite easily.
"The more I see of the world, the more I am convinced that I shall never fall in love." You can pry aroace Jane Austen from my cold, dead hands. While very romantic, I think her stories are so obviously a fantasy that she herself felt quite distant from, and this is an experience I can really relate to: I love to read about romance, but it's not something I experience myself.
I think these manga adaptations are quite a fun way to get a first impression of some classics, as they give a shortened, fast-paced account of the story.
I got this copy from Udon Entertainment on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I started reading the original Sense and Sensibility and I could not get myself to read it. I barely read 3 pages so when I found this one on NetGalley I thought it might help me but it didn't. I know this is different than the original novel in some ways but I really don't like the plot. There was too much crying and too much drama. I should make a drinking game based on it. Every time you see a tear, take a shot. I don't see any creativity in it either. The drama that one of the sisters had to go through just repeated in the other sister's case... except one of them actually got married to the guy that they fell in love with first. Congrats Elinor. The art was not wow. It's a basic manga art. It's not very good but it had its details that I liked.
Thinking that I have one or two more of these to read is not super pleasing.
I would like to thank Netgalley and UDON Entertainment and Morpheus Studios for a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Sense and Sensibility was the first Austen novel I read, and so has a special place in my heart. The author of this manga doesn't seem to have understand the meaning of the story, it's over dramatised and misses the point of the story. The characters don't look right and are doing things out of character. Overall this s not a well executed manga.
