Fran Clark’s grandmother has passed away, and she is assigned the task of going through her Gram’s personal items, deciding what to keep and what to discard. As she is going through desks and drawers, she comes across a key that opens Gram’s trunk, which is filled with quilts made by generations of Clark women. The key was one she had always loved as a child. Filled with nostalgia, Fran spreads the quilts across the room, and while shedding tears for the loss of her grandmother, she suddenly finds herself transported to 1875, and she is not even sure how she got there. Scared and alone, she must find a way to fit into this new world. As Fran struggles to find her way back to her own time period, she learns of a new way of living in the post Civil War era, one of hard work with very little time for relaxation, and lacking any modern amenities, but as she begins to adjust, she discovers a different side to herself. She finds strength and a self-confidence she did not know she had, and she learns that two different men find her beautiful, something she had never thought about herself before. When the time has come to make a decision to stay or leave, she is torn. If she stays she will have a contented and fulfilled life, but she will be living a lie, and she risks hurting those she has grown to love and who love her. And if she goes, even though she will once again be back with her family, she will have to deal with all of the pressures of a modern life, and she will be facing it alone, with no one to love. Can Fran find a way back to her own time? Does she want to? Travel back in time with Fran and decide for yourself what you would do.Yesterday’s Tears is the first book of a new series by Jane O’Brien called A Slip in Time.
Jane O'Brien discovered her love of writing at the age of ten when she wrote her first ten-chapter book in pencil on notebook paper. She passed it around to all of her friends at school and told them she wanted to be an author. And that planted the seed. O'Brien's career life has been varied. She was a piano teacher for over 50 years, a librarian, and a professional proofreader. She is also interested in genealogy, having worked on her own family tree, as well as her husband's, for over 40 years, which helps to color most of her novels. Today, as a grandmother, Jane is finally fulfilling her lifelong dream, after successfully having her thirty-fifth book published, which includes two trilogies, one six-book series, three Christmas novellas, and two Amazon best-selling time slip series. She lives in West Michigan and writes romance with a little history, mystery, and family entanglements, all set in her part of the state. The stories she weaves are about family and the intricate connections of relatives, past and present.
What a wonderful story. I loved the characters and was transported back to 1875 magically. It would be interesting to see how Luke and Franny would manage making the trip back to 2019. Sometimes a bit of crossover can be interesting.
It was fascinating going back and forth between 2019 & 1975 comparing the way people lived between the two. The confusion she felt learning how to do things back then was informative. Today’s gen often teases older folks about not knowing how to do the new tech but they’re just as lost with stuff from our youth and earlier back in time.
The info about using the quilt blocks during the Underground Railway was enlightening.
Footnote: 1) I have an old handmade quilt that I use, a pineapple log cabin pattern, that I inherited from my mom. Have no idea who made it, but it is coming apart in places. I’ve repaired it here and there a bit, but this encouraged me to go and fix all of it. Finally learned how to use a thimble properly. Lol.
Fave scenes: Francine exploring the barn, Luke’s gift, Fran at the mercantile and the ‘very competent’ watchdog Moose.
This story is the kind that transports the reader gently from where we are to somewhere that our modern problems seem filled with anxiety of ease and trivial at best, while at the same time instilling a restful peace to the sole.
Yes it took me a bit to get into this book but once it caught me,I couldn't put it down. I really can't wait to read the next book. I hope it starts where this one left off. I want to know more. So yes, it's a very good read. I really recommend it.
This was my first time travel book and I am smitten. Fran and Luke come across as believable characters and they dragged me into their world. I enjoyed the sisters' interaction. Coming from the UK, I know very little about American social history. The thought of sending messages via quilts is intriguing. This book has been well researched. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. Well done Jane O'Brien, you have gained a follower. Thank you.
I was not expecting to get so engaged. It is a different type of time travel, so interesting and surprising. I am really looking forward to the next book
Yesterday's Tears (A Slip in Time,#1) This was a Goodreads Giveaway I received. I want to thank Goodreads, and the Author Jane O'Brien for this opportunity to discover a new to me author. I really enjoyed this time travel love story. Fran and Luke's story is so sweet, I found it so hard to put in down. I look forward to reading the rest of the series to see how their story unfolds. On a side note this is a clean romance which I value so much. Thank you Jane O'Brien for writing such a wonderful in depth book that doesn't rely on sex to draw in the reader. That is a true gift these days
One of the best almost belivable time travel books I have read. Fran and Clark's story is a tear-jerker. Keep the tissues handy. The suspense is intriguing. You will keep turning the pages. I fell in love with the characters. The story is well written, the plot is amazing. You won't want to miss out on this entire series. I highly recommend it!
This story stops in the middle -- not a cliff-hanger, but a full stop. Authors (or publisher's) do that so people will buy another book (as you know), but I'm reading for free. Therefore I'll just keep getting the next book; I'll also keep giving one star ratings. BTW: the story's not bad.
Love this time travel series Jane O'Brien is a new to me local author, she does a great job writing this series. I read the whole series in a matter of months, I could not put it down. I even passed them on to my mom to read. Highly recommend."
Grief sometimes brings us the greatest of treasures....💗
While never truly feeling like she fit in amongst her peers....always the sturdy tomboy no matter what she did. Fran felt that much more the outsider while deeply grieving the loss of her grandmother. Some of her dearest memories held within her heart were spending time with both she and her grandfather on the farm. Going through family treasures and memories, the very last thing she expected was for her world to completely turn on a dime. This book was such a treat! A unique take on time travel itself as there are no gadgets or standing stones....in actuality its a surprise time slip that lands our main character where she does. Find out exactly when and where she lands and just how on earth she acclimated. It might not be what she expected, but it seems to me it's exactly what Fran needed to become the fullest version of herself. I can't wait to see what's next in this heartwarming series.
An interesting story about Francine losing her grandmother and in her sadness being transported from 2019 to 1875. It is here that she settles in and lives using many lessons her grandpas taught her while growing up. Francine must learn to fit in to 1875 and yet she misses her parents and sister. The flip side is her parents and sister have no idea where Francine went. Was she kidnapped, killed, in trouble? Francine tries to send messages to her sister through quilting. An interesting story that leaves you hanging and ready for book two.
This time-slip story takes Fran Clark back to her grandparent’s farm, the place Fran cherished all her life. Everything is familiar to her because she loved the farm and learned how to perform the main things. She could milk the cow, feed the animals, gather the eggs, get water from the pump, and ride a horse. She also could skin and prepare a rabbit - yuck! Fran is mistaken for the new schoolteacher, which she also did in her present life. There’s a love affair that develops nicely with a luscious HEA. It is my first time hearing Belinda Lams and her Audible narration was good.
I am a huge fan of time travel. When I saw the front of the book, I knew I had to have it. It was the first time I had ever read a book written by Jane O'Brien. This was one of many that I read, but this one was my favorite! I won't give away secrets. I will tell you if you don't read this book, you'll miss one of the best stories. Plus, there's more that you can continue reading. I promise if you start reading her books, you won't be able to put them down.
Wow!!! I cannot believe that this was your first book!!! It is AWESOME!! IT WAS SO HARD TO PUT DOWN! I'm looking forward to more so please keep them coming!!! Brenda Benton superninna2014@msn.com
I loved this book. The use of the old truck and quilts make it a more realistic approach to time travel. I look forward to the next one and hope for more. I thought it was so sweet and the 1800’s is my favorite era.
Well written once you started reading pages rapidly went by. A beautiful story even through unusual situations you never wanted the book to end! Looking forward for the next book
Loved this book, it was written in a really interesting way. My grandmother made many of these quilt patterns, wearing out over a hundred sewing machines. Can't wait for more of this series!
As a fan of the time travel gene, I felt this book had more elements of romance and life in the late 1800’s than time travel. Still, I did enjoy it and found it to be well written and quite entertaining. I will try the next in the series.
I've been putting off my review of this book for long enough but finally I came back to share bits and pieces on my feelings after reading the story.

I liked it from the start. The setting was cozy and warm: if you had a chance to live with your gnandparents somewhere in the conryside in a cabin nearby a lake or river with livestock , then you'll definitely get those memories coming back. It was all reminiscent of something long familiar. Thank you dear author for bringing me back to my child self. The characters, plot twist, narrative style was on point! I got to know lovely Francine and Dora, two Clark sisters who lost their last relatives and came back to 19th century (Yestarday's Tears is all about Francine though); Luke and Ned, two handsome men who are more than willing to help our Franny with accomodation; and many other people who felt real and close to me. It's my first ever time-travelling book which hooked me and now I'm not gonna stop 'till the last book in this series! I'm glad i came upon Jane O'brien's books. You'll be too!
