I’d like to start by saying the art in here is marvelous. Okay got my nice foot forward, let’s go. The Me You Love in the Dark by creative team of author Skottie Young and illustrator Jorge Corona has a great premise and interesting ideas with a recently successful artist buying a haunted house in the middle of nowhere to ‘find a new voice’ for her artwork. Unfortunately it never quite lands and while it is thrilling and shocking, something felt a bit off about it all. It is heavily reliant on pop-culture references, which I will admit to enjoying because I too think About Time is a favorite movie that nobody talks about enough, and it is definitely a story “in the vain” of creepy horror (but also romance?) but it doesn’t register as very fresh. This edition collects all five volumes, which do get off to a great start and have so much promise but by the time it starts to wrap up it feels rushed and a bit unearned.

No lies told here

To be fair, the plotline about struggling against the blank canvas and feeling like you can’t tap into your creative side is something that resonated with me and I quite enjoyed here. Ro finds herself drinking too much wine and unable to create until the ‘ghost’ (the story gets into how this isn’t an ideal term for them but they settle on it for the sake of needing one) starts to chat her up and they form a cute and unlikely friendship. Things get…romantic, which is kind of fun at first. Not surprisingly though this turns into an abusive relationship where the ghost becomes obsessive and their attempts to keep her happy and locked inside turns quite toxic and threatening. The problem is the shift is so abrupt and feels like it skips over a lot of other aspects that would have been more interesting to explore, such as who this ghost is, how their existence works, etc. Which, fine, is me wanting the book to meet my interests instead of just meeting it at what it is doing, but it also heavily points towards this in the early issues before tossing that aside completely. I’m cool with not getting how the mechanics work but, there is a backstory that feels as empty as the rest of the house.

The emotional gaslighting turned violent rage comes up really quickly in the final issues without really having had much time to breathe. Which is often an issue with graphic novels feeling a tad rushed but this would have benefitted from a filler issue full of unease instead of jumping directly from “huh, this is awkward and cute and I suppose probably going to go poorly” to “holy shit this went poorly.” While this is a more frightening story, I think the buildup to obsessive terror was better executed in Anya's Ghost. The end just sort of stops too, and I guess I’d rather that than a drawn out ending but it also just seems like trying to make a mic drop without having said anything that memorable.

There is a great point made in Alexander’s review that something feels ‘borderline exploitive’ about the whole thing. Perhaps a creative team of men aren’t who I’d prefer to have tell a story about a woman seduced then gaslit and abused by an evil entity with whom she eventully has sex with, but also it just feels so much like trying to be “in the vain” of quirky horror (the blurb compares it to Stephen King and Neil Gaiman which isn’t wrong but also feels like they grabbed the first and most obvious names associated with cool horror?) without doing much legwork to make it stand out. And then name dropping cute references to movies like Say Anything and Love Actually to do some ready-made emotional resonance. I still stand by being into the About Time reference. I have it on right now.

I will rave about the art, however. It’s great. Its moody, creepy, the colors work really well, the character design is really sharp and the eventually violence was kind of rad. The choice of hiding the monster ghost lover in shadows with only assumptions of looks in small glimpses was excellent, and I enjoyed the vague human frame that could transform into this many-eyed beast with some gnarly teeth. The house design was cool, if a bit cliched, but the art carries this story.

The Me You Love in the Dark was worth the quick read but was underdeveloped and ultimately forgettable. At least we’ll always have About Time and I’ll think twice about letting demons seduce me.

2.5/5

Hm. Yeah, I can see what Skottie Young was going for here, a story about obsessive and abusive love, but it really doesn't work. It's way too unsubtle to succeed, and it feels like a very sensitive subject handled in a haphazard, borderline exploitative way.

An artist moves into a haunted house, to work on her art, and she falls in love with whatever is haunting the house. Sure, at first she's scared by the ghost talking to her, she thinks she might be losing her mind, but all that lasts, what? Two, three pages? When she asks it what it actually is, it says it's much more interested in her, and that's the last time she'll show any interest in what it is. Or even if it has a name. Guess it just didn't come up again..?

Although the haunty ghosty thing looks like a Lovecraftian horror, all eyes and teeth (to be fair, it looks pretty good), and when it speaks it sounds like a black hole with white letters, there actually aren't any real hints that it's maybe not completely good. It behaves like prime boyfriend material. So then you have three issues/chapters with zero tension, no build up.

After chapter 2 I started wondering if she and the ghost would have sex. Because that would be really, really silly, and already it felt like the kind of book that thought it could pull that off.

Dear reader, I won't spoil it for you.

We hit chapter 4, and we're into full on possessive/aggressive boyfriend territory, and it feels arbitrary and unearned. Again, missing build up. And then the plot rushes towards an ineffective ending, with a little epilogue that does nothing.

Again, I kind of like the idea behind the book, but the execution is lacking. Anyway, it should've been instantly clear the haunty thing was double plus evil when it wanted to watch Love Actually over and over again.

An artist looking for inspiration rents a haunted house - and then discovers it’s actually haunted! But the ghost is not vengeful - quite the opposite in fact. That’s right, it’s time to get the pottery wheel out and fire up the Righteous Brothers for The Me You Love in the Dark!

Skottie Young and Jorge Corona, the creative team behind Middlewest, reunite for another collab. This time it’s a mashup of romance and horror that doesn’t succeed in either genre and comes off as a derivative confluence of pop culture.

What do I mean? The protagonist, Rowena, is basically grown up Lydia from Beetlejuice, and the house too is the same house from the movie. Then Skottie Young decided to make the first half of the book that one pottery scene from Ghost with Swayze and Moore, before switching gears to make the second half like the HAL 9000 part from 2001: A Space Odyssey but with HAL as a haunted house.

It’s underwhelming stuff. I kept waiting for it to become more than it was but it was only ever a possessive boyfriend story. Hmm. The ghost is underdeveloped - no idea what it is or how it came to be - and the romance was never convincing nor was the horror anything more than generic, so it failed to be scary too.

Jorge Corona’s art is quite something though and I loved what he managed to do with the colour black - never showing too much of the ghost was an effective choice, as it usually is in monster stories. The story more-or-less held my attention and I wanted to see where it was going, but nothing much happens to make it stand out as remotely memorable.

A weak story for aping better material that came before it without making it its own, The Me You Love in the Dark is an instantly forgettable faux-romance/horror.

The art is fantastic. The story is good. Sort of an exploration on possession...in both senses of the word. I wanted there to be more, but it's worth reading.

Young, Corona and Beaulieu, the trio that brought us Middlewest, are back with a darker story.
Like in their previous collab this is about an abusive relationship. Not a father and son but a romantic one. This time it mixes fantasy-horror elements into it instead of fantasy-adventure. It worked before and it works again for me.
There are twist and turns that i didn't expect but was onboard with.
This could be 6 issues instead of 5, as i felt the end was slightly rushed.

P.s. The covers for issues 1, 4 and 5 are absolutely stunning.

I loved the art in this graphic novel. It grabbed me from the beginning. The pointed corners and harsh lines, the dark colour palette... it set the atmosphere from the beginning and throughout the story.

Graphic novels are one of my favourite mediums. They are unique. The art is the atmosphere and descriptions. The house is old, but beautiful. It suggests that many lives had been lived here. Not run down, but time has passed.

The protagonist, Ro, is an artist who is faced with the dreaded blank canvas and no inspiration. She has a show coming up, but nothing to show. She and her agent decide a change of scenery could help, and choose an old mansion. At first nothing helps; lighting, rooms, tantrums. But then...

A ghost. At first it was just a noise, inanimate objects changing places... but then a note, "I'm sorry." Slowly he revels himself.

He becomes her muse.

Ro, becomes more and more isolated, and that was originally the point in order to make art. However, it is soon clear he wants her all to himself. ("You can have it delivered, why leave the house?") He treats her like a queen; gifts, gestures of affection and thoughtfulness; professions of love. At a relationship's beginning often the couple wants to be in their own world, just the two of them. This doesn’t last; it's not supposed to. Here is when you find out if the relationship will last. Here is when things go awry for them.

The end is expected and completely unexpected. I felt the story flowed well and it pulled me along with it. I was invested in knowing how it turned out from the moment the ghost appeared. This is a story that has been told before, but I had not seen it told in this unique way before. I didn't know from the beginning how it would go. The current of the plot kept pulling me towards the end, but I didn't predict what would happen next. I tried not to guess, so maybe someone trying harder would have?

Did I mention I loved the art? It is perfect for the narrative.

This was a fun yet simple haunted house graphic novel. I loved artwork which was clear and bold. I don't normally love this subgenre of horror but I felt that it worked well in this shorter form.

2.5 stars. Man was this short. Felt like I read it in 30 mins or less. Two major things that made me not that impressed with this story. 1st, the idea that the main character decides to hang out, dance, watch movies and sleep with this dark monstrous, creepy, ghostly entity thing was weird. Definitely wasn’t buying into that. 2nd, the story was super predictable. About the second issue I put together in my head what I thought was going to happen and I was right on the money. Unfortunately, I’m not going to like every book I read.

*Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.*

Much like the protagonist didn't expect to fall in love with a monster she found in the dark, I didn't expect to love what I found in this comic.

The concept was an interesting one. A little on the underdeveloped side, no doubt, but not far off from being audacious. It erred more on the side of romantic than horror, and when it dipped it's toe into the horror side of things it was more psychological than paranormal.

Ro was a brilliant protagonist. Free-spirited yet sometimes gloomy. Emotional, artistic, nice at times; someone you could relate to if you're introspective and artsy. With only a hint of a backstory she wasn't weighed down by heavy exposition although she clearly had baggage and issues. Admittedly, I would've liked to discover more about her history, but not revealing much did add to the allure of the mystery of her character.

The escalation at the end was emotional and the tension built up well, but it wasn't sustained for long enough and in turn the conclusion felt rushed. Still, this was an engaging read that held more surprises within it than I expected.

"The Me You Love In The Dark" would have been a good read for Halloween.

Ro is an artist. In order to "find herself" (look in the mirror) she rents a haunted house to find her muse. Chugging bottles of wine like they are about to go out of style (smoke weed you lush) she finds the tales of the hauntings are real.

The story certainly takes a darker turn as the ghost and Ro form a relationship. Apparently, Ro, being an artist, is about as smart as a watermelon and consummates this relationship. Soon this becomes a tale of obsession, control, and the incredible stupidity of trying to have a relationship with a dead thing.

No more spoilers. While the children's cartoon style of the art threw me off, this IS a dark tale. Don't let tjhe art style fool you, this one is not for kids. A good horror story of a haunted house and a stupid artist.

I don’t want to say much. Best to leave your imagination a blank canvas for this one. But.. It’s like if Neil Gaiman and H.P. Lovecraft wrote a romantic comedy (with some input from Hayao Miyazaki). Moody. Playful. Surprising. And super creepy. The artwork is subtle and the story is patient. And it lands so well. The first few issues only deliver sips of the broody, gothic atmosphere into which the story eventually descends. I had an absolute blast reading the final issue. I’m still a bit giddy.

The Me You Love In The Dark is a beautifully illustrated horror story about loneliness, art, fear, and ambition. The conclusion completes the story in a satisfying fashion; not really surprising, but fitting the themes. It also tackled struggling artists' creative process very well (although in a stereotypical way). All in all, I had a good time reading it. I'm not in awe but the illustrations themselves are worth it.

This was so incredibly gorgeous, and eerie, and breathtaking. I am endlessly in love with stories depicting relationships between the living and the dead, and the most unique shapes those bonds can take. The artwork is beautiful and detailed, with the character design for the nameless entity being my favorite part of all. The Me You Love in the Dark is one of those graphic novels I'll absolutely be picking up a physical copy to keep on my shelf and will be recommending to anyone who enjoys horror, because this captivated me fully.

I was familiar with Young’s work from his superhero comics, and he did very well with those, despite the natural superhero imposed restrictions, so I was interested in checking out how he does with completely original material. Turns out he does pretty well.
This macabre love story or this haunting haunted tale or this relationship cautionary story was perfectly entertaining and nicely told.
The protagonist of it, Ro, is an artist who fears she may have become an arteest, pretentious and out of ideas. She rents out a place reputed as haunted on purpose, to see if it sparks something inside her. Well, it does. Turns out the ghost is real, although not quite a ghost. And the relationship between Ro and him is real also, although far from conventional.
This is an atmospheric tenebrous tale about the dangers of loving in the dark or being in the dark about the ones we love.
Nice quick read. Quite gothic. Quite fun. Recommended.

This was okay.

My major issues is I thought the story was tackling depression at first. It felt that way. Voice in the head. Staying in the dark. Not wanting to leave the house. Can't create art. You know, this is something a lot of people sadly go through in life. And I was about to relate to the character but then it revealed this voice and figure she was seeing in the dark was actually a demon.

Not maybe it is still a metaphor for depression and self harm and what we do when we're stuck. And for that and the art alone, it hits pretty high. But the ultimate resolution, the demon itself, and the horror route it went so quickly didn't fully work for me.

But bonus points for demon sex.

A 3 out of 5.

I don’t know what I was expecting from this story, but boy oh boy how much I loved it! Which is weird cuz the story is super creepy and f up!
It’s a short horror story that follows Ro (an artist) that rents a house to find her inspiration. Apparently the house is haunted by an ancient ghost and she, as the time passes, fells in love with that ghost.
Loved the art style, love Ro and her facial expressions and her body language, the ghost was creepy ngl and the plot was interesting in a creepy king of way.
I am a fan of comics that can shook me and this one is totally worth it!
Highly recommend it!

Wow what the heck was that in the BEST kind of way.

Loved this! Perhaps too short, but what was here was brilliantly done.

Ro is an artist who moves to a new home to find 'something' for her next art show. What she finds instead will haunt your dreams. *shudder*

This is exactly horror done right. It's creepy in it being sweet when it shouldn't be, and the artwork is absolutely perfect. It's abstract with just enough detail to maintain an extremely high CREEP factor.

I was completely captivated - could not look away! Brilliantly done and there's actually so many emotions running wild here to create complex themes under everything.

Really loved it, and highly recommend for horror graphic novel fans!

The Me You Love in the Dark centers on an artist named Ro, who retreats from the grind of the city to an old house in a small town, hoping to find solace and inspiration. With no luck coming up for any new work, and some friendly pressure from her agent, a ghostly presence within the house becomes the unlikely muse for Ro to paint something, forming a relationship that starts off as a friendship, but leading to something sinister.

An artist named Ro wants to find inspiration and rents a house that looks haunted. She hopes she will be able to work and paint what she likes there. I don’t want to write too much here. It’s best if you don’t know much before you start.

It reminded me of Neil Gaiman’s stories. It’s dark, weird, and creepy. But also kind of beautiful. Art is great, and I loved it.

This book definitely needs a trigger warning for abuse, but it’s so well done that I hope it doesn’t turn people away. It’s about surviving your monsters.

A painter is looking for inspiration, a house is looking for a home.

Going into this series I was worried that reading it in issues would make it seem shorter or it would lose momentum between breaks. Not the case. Each issue felt “full” or complete. It’s also cool because each cliff hanger seems very grand but I can see it transitioning smoothly in the volume to where you might not even notice the issue ending. Each pause planned perfectly. The art was amazing! I loved the design of the monster. Was not expecting this book to be sexy but it does get kind hot for a second?? Unfortunately it doesn’t stay that way, and it is a story about a woman in an abusive relationship. It’s so well written and dare I say I even laughed in the last issue. It gets bloody too, so even if the art looks sweet and classy, there are scary things inside.
