I've read a couple of McKinneys in the past, and was favourably impressed; My Wicked Enchantress in particular is a lush, sweeping bodice ripper with a wonderfully obsessed hero. When I read the blurb for this one, and saw it featured a manipulative heroine who actually PRETENDS TO BE THE HERO'S WIDOW, I was hooked.
⤅ Sadly, this book is totally let down by the hero.
Rachel lives on Herschel Island, which basically seems to be an Arctic tundra off the coast of Canada, running the place's only bar. Her father died a long time ago, but she's in love with a New York explorer named Noel Magnus who appears every so often and gets her into bed (though she resists actual sex) and promises he'll marry her eventually. Rachel, finally tired of his promises, decides to make her way to New York by herself, where she pretends to be Noel's widow in order to get access to his house. Everyone believes her - but then he shows up, spitting mad...
This could have been SO GOOD. It's actually tragic, the lost potential. For one, Rachel is an AMAZING heroine - smart, bold, a little manipulative, but rendered vulnerable by her longing to live in civilisation, rather than a little outpost. Noel takes shameless advantage of her vulnerability. I'm not opposed to shamelessly seductive heroes, in general, but I want their ruthlessness to be directed at having a better endgame than 'heroine is my Arctic mistress, I have a New York mistress, and I also have a New York fiancée'. That was just caddish.
We don't actually see how Noel and Rachel first meet, which is a shame, but he does 'cheat' on her - all the while promising marriage, and doing things to her body, he's having sex with a New York mistress and has his fiancée. When I tell you I longed to brain him with a skillet...
He doesn't grovel enough, if at all, and I wish Rachel had left him for good. Not even McKinney's gift for description and bringing Victorian New York to life could save this one.

-En un principio el libro es muuuuuuuuuuuy aburrido, me costo leer los primeros capítulos, quería que me maten, pero poco a poco me enganche totalmente con la historia y sus protagonistas, desde los niños, la ama de llaves como el villano, todos son muy buenos personajes. Me encanto como a diferencia de otros libros mostraron paso a paso como se fueron amando de a poco y el odio y la venganza, todo fue bueno.
-Al comienzo del libro los primeros capítulos se me hicieron eternos, pero luego la historia fue evolucionando y terminé enganchándome. Es una historia de traición, amor, odio y venganza bastante predecible, los personajes están muy encasillados y no dejan mucho a la imaginación: el malo es malo, la enamorada lo da todo y el atormentado busca la salvación. A veces los diálogos se vuelven muy repetitivos y cansan un poco pero te dan ganas de llegar al final, es un libro que se lee rápido.
-No acostumbro leer libros históricos, este me gusto fue una historia con su toque de drama y divertidos, Noel es machista y rudo pero por la época podríamos decir que es comprensible aunque cueste trabajo jajajaja, los niños fueron lo mejor tan lindos y tiernos y sus toques de ironía, y Rachel sobresale por romper paradigmas de la época y aún así conservar el toque de protección y amor por aquellos que la rodean.
-Bueno, este libro me gustó mucho, lo disfruté y no voy a negar que Magnus me sacaba de quicio su odio y mal humor, era alguien que estuvo envuelto en mucho dolor y sufrimiento, sólo Rachel era capaz de enseñarle que la vida era algo más que odio, y eso me gustó mucho, era una chica terca y no se dejaba, aunque a veces le tocaba por el bendito trato que hizo.
-Es una historia conmovedora, que hace reír, rabiar, llorar y decir ¡Ja lo sabía¡ en fin me encanto la historia de estos maravillosos personajes (A pesar de su lento comienzo) .
-Es una historia que al comienzo me costo leerla, se me hizo pesada pero una vez avance un poco me engancho tanto que la leí de un tirón. La sinopsis me dio una idea equivocada de lo que iba el libro pero al final he quedado gratamente sorprendida. La trama, los desencuentros, las mentiras, los secretos, todo esto me tuvo en vilo hasta el final y fue realmente un placer total leerlo.
-Es el primer libro histórico que leo y me gusto mucho tengo una cosa que criticarle y es el principio porque es muy lento y me costo engancharme con la historia, pero una vez que lo haces es hasta difícil parar, es un libro bastante interesante y algo exasperante, de momentos me encantaba lo que pasaba y en otros quería entrar en el libro y golpear a algún personaje. En fin, me gusto bastante, la trama, todo por lo que pasan y el montón de sentimientos.

La lectura fue dentro de todo buena pero debo decir que ODIO el trato que recibió la mujer a lo largo dela historia... será por eso que no me atrae tanto el este tipo de libros.... Rachel Howland is tired of her suitor’s promises that he’ll marry her someday. Rachel Howland finds herself running the only saloon on remote Herschel Island, Canada, when her father dies. The frigid north holds no appeal for her except explorer/New York City newspaper owner Noel Magnus. Noel hates New York and his dead parents, and has adapted well to the north. He's searchingfor the doomed Franklin party and a black opal he carried. Rachel and Noel both love each other, but Rachel wants to leave the north and Noel keeps breaking his promises. Rachel finally leaves alone and heads to NY to "live in his cottage" which turns out to be a mansion. Along the way she picks up 2 homeless children in NY and is mistakenly thought to be his widow and children. When Noel comes after her and finds out what she's done, spark fly. Complications come from his competitor, Rachel's kidnapped and Arctic survival becomes an issue. Finally all turns out. A convoluted story that seems to start in the middle, but unusual and interesting.

No me ha terminado de gustar. La historia es muy original, quizás demasiado. Los protagonistas se conocen en el polo norte. Ella se quedó sin madre cuando vivía en Londres y se fue con su padre que era ballenero. Regenta un bar, y está enamorada de un inglés que está buscando a un explorador perdido en el polo norte. Un día ella se cansa de esperar que él cumpla su promesa de casarse con ella y se va a Londres a vivir en casa de él como su viuda. Y además en el camino se lleva a dos niños que se encuentra en la calle. Es verdad que el personaje de ella es fuerte, independiente, con iniciática, es valiente. También está locamente enamorada y no hay nada que la haga cambiar. Él no me ha gustado. Se porta fatal con ella. Quiere que se acueste con él sin casarse, quiere que sufra cuando se entera que no le ha esperado, la trata muy mal cuando ella siempre le trata muy bien. Hay partes que me han enganchado, pero otras menos. Mucho mejores otros libros de la escritora.

Me gustó me gustó, lo único que sí digo mmmm, es que Magnus era un completo imbécil, grosero y demás. Y aun así el amor que sentía Rachel hacia él no disminuia, aunque si hay que mencionar que ella muchísimas veces estuvo dispuesta a irse y abandonarlo, admiré eso. Peeero pero pero pero, pues están en esos años donde las costumbres y tradiciones eran muy diferentes, por esa parte, entiendo las actitudes.

I've re-read the book several times and every time it is just as fun.
My Christmas tree stands right before the book shelf this year and on first Christmas Day's Eve, after everyone had already retired for the night, The Merry Widow caught my eye through the branches and candle glow and so - why not?
It's a fun one, and properly winter-y since it's set in the frozen Arctic lands and winter is there, but sadly not here.
So The Merry Widow it was.
And the book remained as entertaining as ever - had me laughing and smiling constantly. Of course it has it's more not so fun moments as well and you can add in funny escapades of all kind too!
I'll even say that even though I've read thousands of books, and majority of them romance themed, The Merry Widow still stands out from them all with it's quirky plot, wonderful characters (and that means the female lead had true spunk and the male lead was not a moronic asshole) and overall great humour.
The book is obviously a romance, but that's not all it is and more importantly the romance is an adventurous one - how could it not be when we go from Arctic winters and polar bears to New Yorks glamorous balls for the elite.
The Merry Widow is a refreshing and exciting romance that has it's own charm which does not fade no matter the years and re-reads.
And every time I think back on the book it has me nearly in tears from laughing - because while a certain man is despairing in fear thinking a certain someone will be murdered or worse and can't do anything without him, the woman in question is actually merrily living the high life XD

Me ha encantado la historia, fue una historia bastante interesante y divertida. Rachel es una chica que quiere una mejor vida y como toda mujer de esa época desea casarse, por supuesto con el hombre que ama. El problema es que este hombre Noel Magnus, siempre la deja por meses con falsas promesas de compromiso, ya que esta mas interesado en su trabajo que en ella. Cuando se corre el rumor de que Noel esta muerto, Rachel se embarca en una locura de hacerse pasar por su viuda y vivir en su elegante casa en New York. a partir de allí las cosas cambian y todos se ven envueltos en una farsa ante la sociedad.

While the author went through the trouble to set the story partially around an actual event -- the Franklin Expedition -- this novel was a complete dud for me. Sigh. I hate it when that happens.

Maybe I'm just not in the mood for historical romance right now. I skipped a lot. But actually the characters and setting is quite fresh for me. And there's nothing wrong with the story.

"Jautrā atraitne" ir grāmata, kuru droši var lūkot pēc vāka - tas ir tieši tik vienkāršs un salds dāmu romāns, cik vāks apsola. Vēsturiskie notikumi te ir tikai krāšņs fons. Un reizēm man kārojas izlasīt tieši ko šādu (kā bija šoreiz).
