Celebrating a birthday isn't fun when there's a killer on the loose in this scream-worthy read from the author of ESCAPE ROOM.
No parents, no rules. Fender, Linnea, Lucas, and Kate are celebrating Kate’s birthday in a luxury hotel. They’re here to have fun and make forever memories. They all know not to bring up what happened last year, especially on this weekend. All that matters is having the most epic time ever.
But the party is over. Someone is leaving messages at their door. Someone who knows exactly what happened a year ago. Someone who wants revenge.
Underlined is a line of totally addictive romance, thriller, and horror titles coming to you fast and furious each month. Enjoy everything you want to read the way you want to read it.
3.5 stars. I felt similarly about this book as I did about the other Maren Stoffels book I read, Escape Room. Super fun and fast-paced mystery! I think this book, like Escape Room, is fun because it's so short. I read this book in a couple of hours, so although it doesn't have any crazy depth or anything, it's a great bite-sized mystery.
AND the plot twist really got me!! I never saw it coming!! Plus, it's a really fun setting in that it all takes place at a hotel and has multiple povs (including the "bad guys" pov).
I wouldn't go in with any crazy high expectations, but I would recommend Maren Stoffel books for a quick fun mystery.
I hate giving harsh reviews because every book is a work of art in one way or another, but everyone has there own opinion so here's mine on this book. I really didn't like it. It was an overused trope of a group of friends did something and are keeping secrets from everyone and mystery messages from the past are now surfacing. I really didn't like it. Plus a lot of the book just didn't make sense or there was useless information that didn't need to be added and don't even get me started on the incomplete ending. This book could have been so much more if there was more to it. For a new reader just getting started in mystery thrillers I can see it being a really good read but for someone experienced? It definitely didn't do it for me. It was really predictable and boring to say the least.
I was browsing the bookshelves at Walmart when I happened upon this book. I liked the cover art and the premise sounded intriguing so I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did! I really enjoyed this one. It was an interesting and suspense YA novel that was fast to get through and had an ending that left me satisfied. There were several pretty cool twists. One was kind of outside of the realm of believability, but it was fun and I enjoyed it.
This was reminiscent of some of the Lois Duncan books I used to enjoy as a teenage. I'd definitely be interested in reading more by this writer.
I hated how this story tried to make us care about abusive, toxic people. Fender was the absolute worst - physically threatening everyone, assaulted Linnea and Kate, mean and angry to literally everyone, yet we are supposed to care about him as a character? I didn’t want to hear his perspective chapters as all and wish we got to hear Kate’s perspective instead. They all lost a friend. The “killer” is stupid for targeting Linnea with everyone else - she had no idea about anything.
The “big reveal” is ridiculous and also very gender normative while just objectifying their former friend as some thing to fight over. I wanted to like this book. I really did. The idea is interesting. The only reason I didn't DNF this is because I already listened to half the story hoping it would make me like the characters more. I don’t think characters need to be totally sympathetic but I just didn’t find anything redeemable about Fender - the hotel should have kicked him out immediately when he choked Linnea in public. I love this genre but this was not one that I enjoyed at all - rather than make it campy, it took itself wayyy too seriously.

let's talk "room service" by maren stoffels. MAN, i was expecting so much more from the eerie cover. despite there being blood quite literally all over the cover, i don't think there is one scene that contains gore or blood whatsoever. i think the most that happens is someone gets tased with a stun gun. i possibly would've enjoyed this book if i was much younger, but due to me being in the more "new adult" age audience, this was entirely disappointing.
i think this book would be ideal for 11-12 year olds that are interested in trying out the horror/thriller genre for the first time. personally i wouldn't classify this as a horror, but certain elements could be disturbing for younger readers.
trigger warnings: - sexual harassment - stalking - MILD terror and violence
A great read! Kept my attention throughout the duration of the book, and the ending was not what I expected (in a good way!). Definitely a bit of a physiological thriller with a great couple of twists. I look forward to reading another one of Maren’s books; this was my first of hers and I’m glad I chose to take the plunge! I recommend this title and author!
Weer een heerlijke jeugdthriller van Maren! Al vermoed ik dat ik het spannender had gevonden als ik hem als tiener had gelezen. Nu zag ik de twists al aankomen.
So this book has gotten some hate on here, so I thought I’d take it upon myself to point out what the author did right.
One, this is a Young Adult Novel- so the intended audience plays a part in the type of writing. The writing style is basic and surface level- but that’s what I expect for the intended age group.
This book is a very quick read. It did take me a bit to form any sort of attachment to the characters, but once I did, I had to keep reading. This is also a very quick read, part of that is due to the fact that the author kept enough mystery to keep me wondering how it was going to turn out. I had difficulty putting it down for long.
It’s somewhat predictable but, the ending did get me. As an avid fan of mystery and horror, I found myself impressed with the ending.
If you read this book with the intended audience in mind, I think most will enjoy it.
I was not expecting the ending. It was great. However, I for some reason was sad at the ending. A huge part of me hoped Fender and Linnea would end up together. (I know it was a long shot) But come on, enemies to lovers would have been great. (that's just my opinion.)
Thank you, Get Underlined, for sending me a finished copy of this book! All opinions are my own.
CW: disfigurement, suicide, emotional abuse
There are few books that I truly dislike, and this is one of them. I forgot all of the character’s names quickly after reading this, so just bare with me when I talk about characters.
Four friends spend a weekend at a fancy hotel when an unexpected guest arrives and begins to torment and remind them of the unfortunate string of events that took place at the hotel a year prior.
This was a quick read, but I felt like the book was much too short for a mystery. It is around 200 pages, and with all of the alternating POVs, it feels like everything is rushed and there are a lot of loose ends.
I didn’t care much for any of the characters or the dynamic of this friend group. It seemed that they were all using each other or just generally did not like one another, but nobody wants to mention it. I think that they were trying to go for the “something tragic happened and now we are bound together even though we hate each other” trope but it didn’t really work out. The friendships and relationships in the book were toxic, but not contested much. The male characters would literally bully the shit out of the newest girl in the friend group and the mood was very much “lol they’re just being silly”. One of our MCs literally gets choked in public by another MC (Fender - I do remember that name) and when someone asks what’s up it’s basically like this:
Hotel worker: stop choking her. why are you choking her.
Fender: oh, I’m sorry, I’m just in a silly goofy mood.
then they just go on with their day???
One thing that really bothered me about this book, and a big reason for me giving it such a poor rating, is that it perpetuates this idea that a person’s looks are the most important thing about them. Near the end of the book, we find out that “Room Service”, our antagonist/tormentor, is really an ex-friend of the group. We learn that the year prior, the group was at this same hotel when the ex-friend fell face first on a sheet of glass. This accident scarred up her body and face and essentially lead to her detaching from the group. This character is treated as crazy or psychotic and all of her friends just…abandoned her after this accident and find a new pretty blonde girl to call their friend and even gives this character the same nickname and romantic interests? While the character does isolate herself from the group initially after her accident, it seems like the only one who tries to see her after her accident is her boyfriend and he gives up pretty quickly. Like, he tries to see her once. Essentially, the whole plot/plot twist rests on the idea that this character was replaced by a new, unscarred version of herself.
Additionally, we think that this character has committed suicide from the beginning of the book because of a suicide note (and funeral? which I’m not sure if it was faked or if the parents actually thought their daughter was dead???) when actually the character is still alive and claiming that they have a new persona (their old personality “dying”). This seems insensitive to me. The idea that this individual committed suicide didn’t add much to the book. We could have been told she was missing, or just not really told anything about this character at all until they were introduced and the story would have been the same. Overall, not a fan of that.
This is a minor thing, but while this character is mysteriously tormenting her ex-friends, she masquerades as a boy. Like wearing a literal mask. Her friends and others had seen her up close while wearing this mask and somehow nobody realized she was wearing a mask. You’re telling me that 4 people were up close and personal with this girl and nobody realized their face was rubber? When she took the mask off they were literally shocked. Come on. I know this book was translated from Dutch, so I’m not sure if something was lost in translation with the mask or if it is actually supposed to be a full on mask, but overall that is a bit odd. I need an explanation.
Overall, not for me. Themes and plot a bit questionable. The mask thing will bother me forever.

It's almost here. The date I'll never forget. The anniversary of the day they killed her. And now it's the day I'll kill one of them. . . . Be careful what you order.
I love books that are fast read with an easy flow that can keep your attention. This psychological thriller was great. Kept me on my toes, I wish there was more to the ending, but overall loved the twists and turns that came with this book.
pro: happens in one night so its very digestible and super easy to read
con: i was confused throughout the whole thing. not like “oh im confused but its gonna get explained later cuz its a mystery and thats how it works” more like “idk whats going on”.
this is 100% my fault but i looked ahead and spoiled the whole plot twist for myself when i was like halfway through the book. whoops! i think if i hadnt have done that it wouldve been better.
Pretty solid read for a quick story. I only give it 3 stars due to the fact that so much more could’ve been done with this. The characters needed to be deeper instead of so surface level. Overall I liked the storyline. Exactly one year ago on Kates birthday something terrible happened. They spend the whole story talking about it and you don’t find out what exactly until the end. Kate dared Isolde to walk a beam. She did, Fender called her name, she got distracted, she fell into glass. She lost one eye and had horrible scarring. She felt like she died that day. She moved away and had nothing to do with her friends. This pet bothers me. Why didn’t her friends try harder? Guilt? That’s not an excuse. That didn’t make much sense to me. So all the friends plus the new girl they replaced Isolde with go to a hotel to celebrate Kates birthday but they end up being tormented by an old love of Isolde’s named Claus. He constantly taunts them. At the end you find out Claus is Isolde in disguise getting her revenge on them and the name Claus is for Lucas who kept trying to push himself on Isolde. The end.

Bad. I don't like saying a book is overwhelming bad, but this is a case of it. The story was practically a copy of "I know what you did last summer" (the movie) where someone or a group did something and is hiding it from other people to the point it backfires. Bleh. Reveal was so dumb, it didn't make sense, like the girl who is MENT to be missing, or dead, is able to look brand new with no scars or anything, and sound like a man for half the book??? It doesn't make sense that no girl could sound like a man for longer than 30 seconds without sounding goofy. And random things added to the plot, or odd things that just appear? Like what? The plot was okay. If it had some work, it would have been a good book. But for me, it wasn't.
