Dread Void #1

Into the Dread Void

Rate this book
After landing the foster family of her dreams, fourteen-year-old Nell Parrish looks forward to spending their first weekend together at their lakeside cabin. The promise of a new start. A new life. A better life.

But nothing will prepare Nell for the nightmare that awaits them there, or the many haunting revelations following fast on its heels. Everything Nell thinks she knows—about our world, our reality, and herself—is wrong, and one night of unspeakable terror will prove it.

In the dead of night, a killer carves a trail of bloodshed across the quiet mountain landscape. Merciless. Unstoppable. Supernatural. Every victim is left in a similar state: on their knees, their flesh in tatters, with expressions of rapture upon their dying faces. Whatever is doing this, it's clearly not of this world, and only something—or someone—equally otherworldly can possibly stop it.

Whatever—or whomever—that may be, they’d better hurry.

Because Nell is running out of time.

From the very first chapter, the story pulled me in. Initially I was trying to figure out how the family in the RV, man driving and foster kid all tied together. As the story progressed, I found my answers. This is a story about a mysterious green light that mesmerizes people and ultimately causes their deaths. It's also a story about Nell, who grew up trying to deal with life as a foster child. Nell is different and the reader learns more about her and what makes her different. This story pulled me in and kept me turning pages. The characters were well developed even if they only had a brief appearance in the story. I really liked Nell and Hux. I hope they are in future books in this series.

I received a free ARC copy from the author and this is my honest review.

This beginning to a new Series is excellent! Very imaginative, with Lovecraftian overtones, a really scary Cosmic Horror (as Lovecraft always reminds, Cosmic Entities are SO far beyond humanity that there is no compassion or empathy, no understanding, no concern. How well demonstrated here!!)

The characters are exceptionally delineated (including Cosmic Horror here, which rather me of a Sociopathic Scientist, always researching regardless subjects' pain or fatality). I am over the moon and anxious for the next installment of Terror.

A bright green light people are drawn to. A foster child with a unique gift is immune to the light. Hux is a man with silver eyes tracking the light. Can the light be stopped? Intense page turner.

based on how much this book was hyped up on here + how pretty the cover was I was sure I'd love it but I really didn't.

starting with how this is in the "horror" genre yet it didn't even feel thrilling, not to mention scary.

the main character, Nell, was unlikable, undeveloped, and bland, in my opinion- which I really hated because that matters to me a lot.

aside from that, I didn't find anything interesting in this story. I didn't think the storyline was compelling, I didn't like any of the characters (and all of them felt the same) and the only thing I think I liked was the ending, which wasn't great, per sè, but it wasn't bad, either.

if you like stories about aliens, or quick reads from the spooky genres maybe this is for you. but it definitely wasn't for me.

A cinematic, ethereal horror

Into the Dread Void is officially my favourite horror novel of all time. This novel had the best elements of HP Lovecraft and Stephen King stories, while maintaining a wild, unruly originality.

I could not peel my eyes away from the pages. I spent all day at work sneaking glances at my e-reader (aka my phone), desperate to know what happened next. The sinister neon-drenched world sucked me in, wrapped its dark tendrils around me, and refused to let me go until I read the entire thing.

Ok, so I really enjoyed this. It was fun and a little spooky. I liked the characters and the writing. It was a fun and easy read for me. But there was also a lot that was not explained well and I'm seriously still at a loss as to what happened exactly. I do plan to continue the series though and I'm hoping more will be explained as we get more further along.

This book was so awesome!

I do believe the orchestrator of my nightmares Abe Moss is out done his self this time. When Nell A long term fosterchild finally finds a family she really likes with Mr. Casey and Miss Casey and their daughter she wants to stay. She even enjoys searching for old music tapes at thrift shops with Miss Casey. When they go away to the lake one weekend she thinks it will be time to meet the family and she does. Mr. Casey’s parents joined them the father is very leery of now, but his mom is very nice but the dad makes everything feel awkward and she thinks that is the worst thing that’s going to happen that weekend and she is so wrong. When the daughter can’t find her cell phone she runs out to her dads car to look for it, But she is going to long until the day and goes to look for her. Eventually they both return begging and pleading for the rest of them to come see what they found in the woods, but it is pouring down raining and everyone thinks they’re acting crazy. The daughter even beseeches Nell to come see something that she finds unbelievable since the daughter doesn’t like her at all. Eventually they try to force them to go and what they fine will be the last thing they should be looking for. This book is so good I loved it I love ox, Tessa now everyone this book was so great a most is an awesome awesome writer. You have to read this book if you Love horror then you’ll love this book.

I am still figuring out if this was a YA book with too much gore and violence for kids or a very simple adult book.

Nell Parrish has spent her young life in the foster care system. She gets placed with a young family who have a daughter, and things are really looking up for Nell. Unfortunately, she's leaving her best friend behind in the group home, but she assures her that nothing will change and they'll visit. Her friend doesn't think that will happen and while she's glad for Nell, she's sad and jealous.

Nell and her new family are going to their cabin, along with C.J.'s parents. C.J. is Nell's new foster dad, Kacy is her new mom and Julie is their daughter. Nell is anxious about the cabin visit and meeting the elder parents of C.J., and while she is warmly welcomed by the elder mom, the elder dad seems a bit standoffish. Nell is also afraid to tell them all that she cannot swim. This gets rectified on the first day when Julie makes the announcement to her parents, and everyone begins to teach Nell how to swim.

Things go downhill when a storm arrives, Julie goes outside in search of her phone, and a big green light outside changes the personality of everyone outdoors. Some strange alien form is feeding off humans and killing them. This supernatural thing is out to get everyone in it's path.

Nell finds her special gift for calming people, also works against this alien force, however, she has to be touching the person affected for it to work. She soon finds that saving her new, happy family will be her biggest obstacle, along with saving herself.

Thankfully, there's another force that is working for good. The giant's name is Hux and it's his job to go into the Dread Void when alien forces penetrate our world. His silver eyes and hands, plus his overall huge size, and magic abilities are soon welcomed by a terrified Nell.

Into The Dread Void wastes no time getting you invested in its world and characters. It’s violent, intriguing and extremely well written.

Will definitely read more of Abe Moss’s work and I can’t wait to see what other worlds are beyond this one.

Okay, so this book has been on my radar for a while, and now that I have finally read it, I can now kick myself for not reading it sooner. It has all my favorite things:

-Eldritch abominations? CHECK
-Disturbing gore/body horror? CHECK
-Characters I am fully invested in? CHECK

I love Nell so much, I had to stop reading every other chapter or so in the beginning because the masterfully crafted tension as the "entity" crept nearer and nearer to her and her foster family was too much for me. She is a great yet flawed young protagonist who really doesn't deserve the horrible life she's been handed.

Then there's Hux, who reminds me a lot of the Inspector from the Neverglades series (seriously, reading his segments made me itch for the Neverglades; if you haven't read/listened to that, you SHOULD). Hux is amazing, and he is one of the rare example of AWESOME powers feeling like a real curse instead of a gift.

My only issue is that this book is really short. I have a feeling all the books in the series might "add up" to being one normal sized book, but I mean...that certainly isn't gonna stop me from reading all of them all at once. More books for my reading challenge, I guess.

TLDR:

This is a fast paced cosmic horror adventure with wonderful characters and some terrifying creatures. What more could you want?

Also, there is an adorable dog named Howard. If you, like me, spend the ENTIRETY of a horror book in which a dog is present feeling terrified and anxious about the dog's safety, here is the outcome:

I have to give a lot of credit to author, Abe Moss, for his building of suspense in this story. The novel opens with a family getting killed in a mysterious and pretty horrifying way. I frankly expected that to be the lead into bringing the story’s heroine, fourteen-year-old, Nell, and her foster family into danger, but Moss had a better idea. As the foster child and foster family get to know each other in suburbia, Moss keeps introducing more and more people who die terribly out in the wilderness where we know the foster family is planning to vacation. By the time the family heads out to their cabin, the death rate is already incredibly high, and things do not look good for our heroine.

At the same time, Moss also introduces us to a very strange giant of a man who appears to be trying to stop the entity that is killing people out in the wilderness. He’s a bit disturbing as well, but heck, we can hope he really is a good guy.

Things really get hopping when the family arrives at the cabin and has a super nice day before everything goes to hell (almost literally). As the entity begins to entrap family members, Nell discovers that her supernatural ability to calm people by touching them serves to break the hold of the entity over her new family members—but only while she is holding on to them. What follows is the desperate effort of Nell to save these people who were so unexpectedly kind to her while it becomes increasingly obvious that she isn’t going to be able to save them all.

This is a very good story about an atypical supernatural threat.

Hooked me from the beginning

Immediately, this book drew me in with the appearance of a green glowing light that compels people to follow it, get on their knees in apparent ecstacy as their skin boils away and they peel their skin and tissue from their bodies.

We are also introduced to a teenage foster kid named Nell who seems to have found a great foster family. The family takes her on a camping trip to the family cabin and things go bad from there. We discover that Nel has the ability to calm people down with a touch, but she is also immune to the call of the green light, and she can break a person's trance if she touches them.

This is certainly a page-turner. You can't help yourself getting attached to Nell, at first as she struggles with the life of a foster kid, then as she cautiously hopes this family might be the one, and then as she fights to save her new family from the evil that lives behind the light. The supernatural aspects of this book are less about the paranormal, and more about a scientifically plausible explanation, but nonetheless still dangerous and frightening.

The book was well written, the main characters well developed. The story was compelling, enough so that I am looking forward to book number 2. This book was not a cliffhanger, but clearly, the story isn't finished. Great book.

Mystery-laiden tale of unimaginable horror.

4 solid stars.

An extremely well written novel that began in much confusion and concluded with a thrilling ending.

Bonus: NO editing errors!

Hux, a not quite human with the ability to travel between dimensions and vanquish the monsters therein, is called upon to kill a particularly vile multi-tentacled entity that consumes human souls to survive. A human girl, Nell, who has spent practically all her life in foster homes, becomes the focal point between Hux and the entity due to her possessing "cosmic traits" that can save other humans, such as those in her newly adoptive family, from the ruthless entity.

Without giving away too much of the plot, Nell is drawn into the battle for her new family's lives between Hux and the entity. What follows is a dangerous and deadly fight that nearly drives her insane and almost kills Hux.

The characters are all well developed, the plot becomes smooth, the prose is outstanding and the plot lines ultimately meld seamlessly. The ending chapters are abundantly horrific and heartwarming, with a teasing insight of future events. This is an author to watch out for in the near future!

I am looking forward to reading the sequel. For fans who like their horror with many twisted turns, this book is for you!

a really solid start to a series with a very promising premise!

our main character Nell is in the foster system and has been through four families, none a big success story or anything. when she’s taken in by her fifth foster family though, they decide to take her on a yearly family tradition trip to their lakeside cabin. unbeknownst to her, there’s a strange entity in the woods taking and consuming unsuspecting victims, and the first night of the trip turns into a night of horrors she never could’ve imagined.

Nell and Hux were easily the standout characters for me, but all the character work was surprisingly thorough. even the small characters were really well developed.

it takes a minute for Nell to get involved with the horror, but once it happens, its a non-stop cosmic thrill ride full of tentacles, body horror, and strange magic.

i definitely think this was lacking a bit in terms of style, but with it being an 8-book series, there’s plenty of time for these books to grow into a monster of its own.

a great start to this series. i will be binge reading the rest as quickly as i can!

3.75/5.

After years of horrible experiences in foster care, fourteen-year-old Nell Parrish is finally placed with the loving foster family she always dreamed of. But during a weekend trip at the family’s cabin by the lake, her new life is already irretrievably lost when they are attacked by a horrific otherworldly entity. Thanks to her unusual gift, and an unexpected ally, Nell ends up as the lone survivor of a fierce and gruesome battle. And then the unnatural murderer re-emerges deadlier than ever…
Into the Dread Void is the first book in a chilling and imaginative new series by horror author Abe Moss. He combines the futility of human existence with a shocking cosmic revelation. Nell is such a great character with a troubled past, vividly depicted with all of her fears and emotions. Her internal experience of these horrible events makes this an awesomely creepy story!

I was drawn into the book quickly by Nell, a teenage girl in the foster system. She seemed to have a special power when she touched someone, but unfortunately this did not really get explained much. She had just found a new foster home. In another chapter we are introduced to the glowing green light that is evil and draws people in, to their ultimate death. We also meet Hux, who seems to be a go-between between where the light is and his home. All three elements come together one weekend as Nell is away with the new family. Disaster hits and she does her best to save the family. Hux comes and realizes something special about Nell and saves her. The people from the green light are also interested in Nell whom they also realize is different. They story comes to an end and I enjoyed it but I was left a little confused about things. I am hoping there is a continuation in the works…..

This is a fast-paced human-as-prey cosmic horror novel.
There are two things about this that make it stand out in my mind:
First, the structure/order. Mr. Moss hooks you in at the start with the weird and paranormal bits of the story before stepping into the main narrative and introducing his protagonist, a 14-year old who has spent her life in the foster care system. If he had started there I would most likely have set this aside as a YA novel I purchased by accident.
Which leads to the second strength of this story: the complete imbalance of power in Nell's struggle. Her alien foe is unfathomably powerful, and Nell and her are hopelessly and impossibly outmatched. This works well with the "Lovecraftian" insanity-causing tentacle monsters from other dimensions.
I already own the next two books in the series, and look forward to seeing how Howard (my favorite character) fares in the next installments!

The action grips the reader fast and doesn't let go until the end, and even then you want to reach for the next volume.

The book feels almost like the pilot episode of a Lovecraftian television show, and I mean that in the best sense of the words as we are introduced to characters and to the horrific forces gathering around them. The book follows a foster girl with strange powers and a man chosen to be a warrior against eldritch evil and a defender of our reality, and when their separate storylines meet, the action is everything I could want.

The author also does an excellent job building the numerous characters, so that in a very short amount of page-space I had developed some affection for them and was on the edge of my seat knowing that many would likely not survive. Pacing and characterization are top-notch.

Nell has special powers, not that they've done her any good until now. She's grown up in the system, foster home and state run homes her whole life. When she finally gets a family that feels like home all things go wrong on the trip to the cabin. Nell must use her powers, if she can, to save them.

That sort of sums up what the story is about. I loved Nell's character. In the beginning of the story I devoured the book. But once they got to the woods and I read how the people were dying, it lost my interest. I didn't care for the ending either. The book started out fantastic and interesting and just went blah for me. But I do hope you give it a try because this is just my opinion.

Abe Moss is setting the standard for this generation of horror literature. Into the Dread Void has a compelling story line with unique and relatable characters that you genuinely grow to care about as the story progresses. This particular story has elements of science fiction that keep you guessing, wondering what will happen next and what exactly is going on. This is my fourth Abe Moss book and I must say if you're new to his library, Into the Dread Void is an excellent book to start out with.

Abe Moss' books always draw you in from the start, and this one is no exception. The characters are very likeable, and the story has the usual twists and turns and surprises that this author is very good in doing in all of his books. This is a little different in that there is also some sci fi feel to it mixed in with a dark horror, which he does a good job with. With this being a series, you end the book anxiously waiting for the next one. I will be looking forward to seeing what else he throws our way in the future.

A quick and easy read, but lacking in style or substance. Although it’s marketed as cosmic horror, it gives lip service to the genre and instead provides a form of urban fantasy with sci-fi trappings. It didn’t help that the references to witches and potions felt more fitting than the tacked-on “forbidden knowledge” elements. It also felt like a pilot episode of a tv show, and despite the criticism I gave I’d call it a successful pilot. As soon as I finish writing this I’m ordering the next book. Will I finish the series? Not necessarily, but I am going to give it a shot.

This book hooked me with its first chapter. I was enthralled and felt it was exactly the odd, dark and unflinching novel I was looking for, but as it continued, that feeling faded.

I will be honest, Mr. Moss did an outstanding job pacing the book. The characters work well, especially the Palmers, and the mystery is gripping.

The primary POV characters came off a bit soft in their development with much of who they are being shrouded in mysteries that never revealed themselves. I don't believe that choice was accidental, but for me, it didn't work.

My biggest problem was with the story. Many elements worked exceptionally well, but halfway through I was hit with the notion that this was little more than an opening act, not a complete story. There were no answers to the fundamental questions being asked, and what was given fell a bit flat in my opinion. I know there are a number of books in the series that will likely evolve and elaborate on what exists in this book, but in the end continuing on with a writer's work is a question of trust.

As sad as it is to say, I was left without that needed sense of trust and for that reason, I will not be continuing with the series.

A MUST for your TBR list! Fast-paced! Riveting! Exciting! Addictive! Chilling! Not only is this a very well-written book with wonderfully-interesting characters, but the suspense builds at just the right pace as the story unfolds. It was an artful melding of twisted thrills and heart-pounding action that kept me hanging on every word the whole way!

Invasion of Malevolence

Abe Moss has written another winner. A beautiful green light attracts people. It lures them to their deaths. Nell is very happy with her new foster parents - until they are killed by the dark entity who is fascinated by her. Unlike the others she does not fall prey to its attraction. She comes across Hux who is the only being who can fight this evil. This book was scary and a page turner.

I. NEED. MORE!

I don't really know what I expected going into this novel, but it blew me away with every page. Abe Moss has a way of gripping my mind and subduing it with a slow-burning tale that builds and builds with every single word. This story however, is a new breed of beast to come from his pen, and I...am in awe. I absolutely CANNOT wait for the next book to drop. Mr. Moss, you have outdone yourself.
