The Beast by Hildie McQueen
Clan Ross of the Hebrides series #2. Historical Scottish romance. Can be read as a stand-alone but characters from the first book play minor roles in this book.
Beatrice Macdonald has been staying at the Ross family estate to make sure her eldest sister is happy in her marriage arrangement (book 1). Wanting to stay past the wedding events, she sends a note home that Duncan Ross has been courting her. Of course she’s caught in the lie but the more time she actually spends with the quiet man, the more she falls for him.
Duncan Ross has scars and memories that keep him self isolated. He was sold as a young child and kept as a slave for more than ten years, beaten continuously, starved and eventually thrown overboard to die. He doesn’t understand why Beatrice won’t leave him alone or what she wants from him. He just wants to be left alone.

Duncan’s past is simply heartbreaking. Beatrice allows him to see a bit of light in his dark existence. Their courtship, reluctant on his part, is not a smooth road and almost ends before finally realized. There were tears and understandable fear before the ultimate healing and love could be accepted.

🎧 I listened to an audiobook narrated by Mhairi Morrison who does the full series. The performance was wonderfully done and had me visualizing the Scottish countryside, the small room that Duncan claimed and the horrific tortures he survived. The romance of love and anguish and passion came through clearly along with the Scottish accents.
I did listen at my usual preferred speed of 1.5.

Duncan was a tragic hero

But I loved him. His honesty, and naivety were quite unexpected in a man so destroyed. His life was awful. His evil Father sold him to these horrible men who abused him, physically, mentally and sexually, for over 10 years. He have severe case of PTSD with a social anxiety disorder too. He had trouble in crowds and large groups of people. His nightmares were haunting and he just wanted to be left alone. Beatrice was the perfect foil to his tragic soul. She brought life, laughter and love to his world. I loved how they got together and how sweet they were to each other. And there was also passion! There is a part of the book where he hurts her so badly but he was so broken, I understood why he did what he did. But her pain was also deep. There is an HEA and It was safe and free in KU. I am loving this series so far and I am glad I have nothing to do so I can just read them. Oh retirement I love you so! Lol

The Broken Man and the Laird’s Daughter

Duncan Ross was a prisoner on Spanish galleons for many years, forced to either kill other prisoners or suffer terribly beatings and starvation. He was stabbed may times when he was already to sickly too survive and thrown overboard and only a by a miracle did he still live. Duncan had hideous scars all over his body such that he was afraid to allow a woman to see it. The scars on his heart and soul were even worse.

Beatrice MacDonald was taken with the giant but quiet man and she didn’t want to have her husband chosen for her. Duncan was kind and gentle and Beatrice wished he could be her husband. Even after she accidentally saw his horribly scarred body she still thought Duncan beautifully made.

Could Duncan overcome the horrors of his past to have love in his future?

A wonderful story of love & healing

I knew from book one that Duncan Ross was going to have a heart-wrenching story, and that he was going to need the love of a strong woman to help him heal. Duncan has a horrific past and is barely hanging on to sanity. He secludes himself and doesn’t believe he deserves love or happiness. Beatrice MacDonald is everything Duncan needs and she is strong enough, determined, and willing to lay her heart on the line. They may not have planned to marry but when honor demands it Duncan agrees. These two get off to a rocky start and each of them has to learn that loving someone means taking a risk and that marriage is not without its trials. I loved Duncan & Beatrice’s story.

I am eager for the next books in the series. I have a feeling there is going to be a lot of changes for clan Ross.

Great story! Great series! Check it out!!

* Themes, imagery, and content may be a trigger for some readers. Discussion of physical abuse and death appear within the novel. Scenes depicting graphic violence/death also appear. they could be considered triggering to you, please take note.
The Beast by, Hildie McQueen. Usually I don’t say this in my reviews, but I have to say this, you got to read this book. At first I was unsure if the book would warm up to me, but then after a few pages the book picked up pace and the entertainment, suspense and action took over. The writer without a doubt has written a book for you to enjoy. I love how this writer can take a story and write as though it’s a , movie plays in your mind.
Clearly I was lost in my own world while reading the book. I appreciate that the writer didn’t add useless wording or information that has no impact with the story. Duncan’s story really took a hold of me and didn’t let go. I was definitely caught off guard by somethings that where said and done in the book. This made me love reading this book even more.
Beatrice I enjoyed reading her character. For me she grew into her role along side Duncan. The romance between Duncan and Beatrice was very exciting and hot. My steam radar is set rather high, so look for more of these scenes in future books. I am glad to see that this is a happy ending book.
My heart absolutely melted for this swoon worthy couple at the end. This book is a page turner to enjoy reading. Until next time my fellow readers… read on!

NOW we are talking...

I have a friend that talks "sophomore slump". Not a problem here. I was so looking forward to this story and was not disappointed.

Beatrice was everything I hoped she'd be. The sunshine to grumpy Duncan. The impulsive girl who wants wings to fly but so compassionate. I loved she SAW Duncan.

Duncan was the broken hero that is the one you want to heal. He is so much more than he expects himself to believe. But he has fallen in love with his wife. He makes missteps but then recognizes and course corrects. You hear his backstory - tragic and damning but the author doesn't leave you in angst for long.

I loved their story! So glad I decided to give this series a chance.

Recommendation: Read it!

I couldn't put it down!

This is the first book that I've read in this series so I'm a little out of order and might have missed something from the first book. I found this book compelling with great characters, wonderful world building, and a well paced story.

I was expecting a man who often went off in to a rage at the least little thing causing everyone to give him a wide berth. But I didn't find that to be so. He got tense and extremely uncomfortable when forced to be around a bunch of people. But he was unfailing polite and courteous to Beatrice even when most of the predicaments they found themselves in were due to her impetuous actions. Even though the blurb for the book was misleading I really enjoyed it and look forward to reading more in this series.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes historical Scottish romances.

💋💋

So many heartfelt feelings for Duncan in this book, my heart just aches for him, to believe he wasn’t worth love or a family because of someone else’s actions.
It broke my heart.

Beatrice is everything he needs, he can’t understand why she want him, she just knows he the only one for her.

The past will come back to haunt him, can they get through together.

Awesome storyline and the writing is wonderful. Hildie has produced another wonderful book in this series.

I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review

Duncan has to be the most tortured soul I've ever seen in a hero of a book. I actually had tears coming down my cheeks when it was described what he had endured for 10 years. If a man deserved love, it was him!! As for Beatrice, I was kind of on the fence about her. In some ways she was quite spoiled and in other ways she had a good heart. But, she was good for Duncan and that's what counts!!

I have to admit I enjoyed this book a bit more than the first one in the series but there was still a lot of wasted opportunities to make the story even better. Clan Ross is certainly a family with a lot of issues but they do stand by each other and the love of family is all important.

This series is starting to grow on me and I look forward to reading the next books.

Another strong Scottish heroine from one of my favorite Highland romance authors. Beatrice must dig deep to help Duncan deal with his anger issues and internal scars. I was intrigued with both characters in book one and enjoyed book two immensely.

OK

This book had serious potential that was by no means realised. Sadly, what could have been a heartbreaking story of growth with the hero overcoming his gruesome past by way of a gentle, caring relationship with his oddly begotten mate was under-realised and poorly executed. Pacing was nonexistent. The ending was abrupt and unsatisfying. Phrasing and word choice was atrocious with abominable editing. I really would like to see steady, if slow, improvement with each instalment in this book series. I am not seeing it. Where are the author’s beta readers and editor?

A hero with a very tragic past, that years later he is still to recover from, finds love and light with a woman who sees him for the good man he is.
It was so sweet how they both were learning with each other how to be intimate.

So... Interesting story: Duncan, son of a Laird is kidnapped/sold into forced work - 10 years after that, he is able to get free. Takes 1-2 more years to get somewhat his head straight and return home to his family. They know he has a traumatic start in life, we can see it on his body and sometimes in his mind. He has tendencies to be a loner, withdrawn, and lonely. Making him a grump.
Beatrice is sister to Isobel - Duncan's older brother and Laird's wife - making her, Duncan sister-in-law by marriage. Beatrice doesn't trust the Ross Clan, therefore she will do everything to stay with her sister to make sure she is safe. So, she tells her mother through a letter that Duncan is courting her. When Duncan is confronted by her mother, he doesn't disagree and almost makes it look like it's true. They get caught in the rain, things happen (non-sexual), they are obligated to get married, they start well, someone from Duncan's past comes to make drama (that is put to rest within a chapter), and then... then it's where it gets weird. We start to see the jump in time and days between the couple, things are rushed, fights ensue, and out of nowhere boom! they are together away.
I liked the story since I am a sop when it comes to tortured heroes, but the timeline was chaotic and rushed.

"The Beast" is book two in the "Clan Ross in the Hebrides" series by Hildie McQueen.
Beatrice goes to visit her sister and wants to stay a little longer. Her parents want to marry her off to a man that Beatrice doesn't want to marry, so she writes to her mother and tells her that Duncan is courting her. She is hoping to pass time, and her mom will forget about her marrying the other guy. She goes to let Duncan know what she did and ends up putting herself in a position where she will have to get married.
Duncan has a past that haunts him daily and doesn't plan on ever getting married. He feels he is not good enough for anyone and tries to keep to himself. With Beatrice showing up unannounced and alone, he starts to think maybe he could be loved.
I'm not a bit historical book reader, but I absolutely loved this book by Hildie and will definitely continue in the series.

3.5 stars.
This was better than the Isobel and Darrach's story.
I love brooding Heroes and Duncan was definitely one.
He's closed off, hurting and full of past hurt. He kept everything to himself, living secluded - away from his family in his own house with just two helpers.
I loved him immensely.
And I also really liked Beatrice. I mean, she's beautiful perhaps a tiny bit flighty - but she's kind hearted and a really good person. I enjoyed their interaction and chemistry. The only thing I would have loved to see more was more ANGST!
I need more angst in my stories. This one was okay, but I crave more.
It's a nice story that I finished within a few hours.

Why is he called the Beast?

The story was good in a very monotone sense. I never felt the high or the low while reading.

Duncan is a good character but I never got the "beast" vibe from him. I troubled soul that Beatrice really helped just by loving him. Duncan was loving and kind, to everyone, through the whole story. His scars may be scary but 10 pages into the book you knew he was no beast.

Beatrice was a good character for Duncan heroine but I felt I never really got to know her as a person, even by the end of the book.

A good read if you're looking for the sweetest man with a heartbreaking story.

What I loved: a broken, scarred hero who wasn’t a manwhore and was almost a virgin.

What I hated: a childish, immature heroine who gives up on the hero when his demons get the best of him.

Safe. Hero’s past was mentioned as only having sex twice before. Heroine is a virgin and belongs only to her hero. No others, no cheating or sharing or abuse. HEA but no real epilogue

I love Duncan. I want to give him a hug and protect him from the world for forever. Beatrice is funny, like she doesn't try to be but I just giggled every time she messed up. Love them both together. Love how they work through things. Loved this story and can't wait to hear about the rest of the brothers! Content warning for human trafficking, torture, and ptsd.

Not to my liking

I didn't really enjoy reading this one. Duncan had suffered badly during those ten years of captivity. The author had us suffer along as she recounted his painful history. It was very unpleasant. Then there was no real understanding of his PTSD when he had his last breakdown. Not even from his brother the laird over unfair expectations. His immature wife disappointed me too. She said she loved him but she didn't act like it. It was all about her and her feelings and despite promises to love through sickness and hardships she showed no empathy or sympathy or compassion. She focused on her pride and hurt feelings. She didn't want to forgive or reconcile. She considered abandoning her marriage because he wasn't able to emotionally handle travel when she insisted on going. What a selfish person she was. More was made over her feelings than his troubles and that rankled.
I don't recommend this book

Duncan & Beatrice. At the age of 14 his dad took him on a trip to experience the life of a merchant since he's the the 2nd son. His dad ended up selling him into slavery where he was passed from one ship to another. He was beaten, starved, tortured and forced to kill other captives. He returned broken, having nightmares. Beatrice was first sent to the Ross keep to meet the new laird but he chose her older sister instead. Not wanting to return home, she sends a note to her parents telling them that she was being courted by Duncan (she had only spoken to him once). He returns from his trip (delivering Beatrice's note) and goes to his home south of the Ross keep. Beatrice was told that Duncan wanted to speak to her but and would be coming to the keep in a couple of days. Impatient, she rides to his home (alone) to talk to him and tell him that she will fess up to the truth when her mother comes. On their way back to the Ross keep, a storm comes through and they seek shelter at an abandoned house. Soaked, he gives her a plaid to cover with while her dress dries. She falls asleep and wakes to an empty house. Her dress is dry and she goes to change and realizes he is there in the corner and she's nakey. The return to the keep the next morning and people know she spent the night elsewhere and that they arrived together. Darach insists that they marry but they are both reluctant. They are later caught kissing and the marriage is now set. They marry and love each other. They are invited to meet her dad at Macdonald keep (with her sister and the laird for the winter season). An encounter with a former captive set him off into a dark zone and instead of going to her father, he runs away to a cabin that he recovered at when he first escaped captivity. The landowner ends up dying and Duncan realizes he wants Beatrice and not the loneliness that the landowner had. He goes to Macdonald but is denied entry and Beatrice is hurt and refuses to see him so he goes back home. When they return early she forgives him (because they love each other). These two have amazing chemistry! I love that even though he wasn't inexperienced, he hadn't been with anyone since he was 14. Their first encounter was exactly as would be expected. He was quick and didn't focus on her. Seemed real.

Stars 3.5/4 (Margaret Mallory, Julie Johnstone, Monica McCarty, Lynsay Sands, Donna Fletcher)

my personal markers for a great read...1. smart and engaging writing, 2. Humorous, 3. sexy interactions 4. stories with family/friends

The development and interest in main characters and secondary characters was enjoyable. I really did like the H/H for this book.

I love series around family members or a group of friends. I love the series even more when the author intertwines those characters throughout the book series (it’s a pet peeve when authors don’t do that because what’s the point of the series and introducing the characters if they are not going to interact throughout the series). You get series book characters, nicely written and enjoyable.

I loved the writing around the women empowerment (it wasn’t over the top for me). Badass women rock.

Movement of the book flowed for the most part. Book writing/conversation engaging. The Scottish dialogue wasn’t difficult to follow and there’s also modern vocabulary. Action packed.

Laugh out loud humorous moments.

Romantic /sexual content (kissing, oral and love making scenes) was throughout the book. Nothing over the top, some ‘dirty’ words intertwined rightly in the story telling. Short story 2.5/5 hotness and steam.

Totally recommend author.

Will read the next book by the author.

You don’t have to read the book in order however I think you miss the true story of it’s not read in its order.

side note…i find there are missing/conclusion storylines in each book which can a little ‘sooooo what happen’.

This is a story that I will never forget. The best story I have read in awhile.
Duncan a man who was severely damaged emotionally and physically with
horrible scars so hideous that he has a very dismal outlook on life.
He meets Beatrice who tells Duncan that she had conjured a
ruse about each of them to her mother.
An impulsive move on her part results in disastrous
consequences for both of them.
Strong family come together and the resolution is clear.
Something neither one of them wanted.
One kiss will change everything and their journey to find true love
will be filled with heartaches, humor, happiness, terror, confessions, and more.
This story had my complete attention in one sitting.
The wedding night scene was written with such care it made my heart flutter.
It's not all sweet and happiness though. There is evil lurking in the shadows
and some gut wrenching moments had me on the edge of the chair.
Actually at one point I shed enough tears that I had to stop reading for a bit.
I loved the story that is filled with romance, emotional growth, trust and family love.
The verbal discussions about Duncan's younger life is really shocking but is
necessary for the depth of this well written story.
I highly recommend this book and the entire series.
PS: The cover is awesome 5 Stars*****

I read the whole series!

Not every book is a 5 star, but the whole series is worth it. The series is about the lives and loves ❤️ of the Ross clan in Scotland before things were completely settled. So there was a lot of to-an-fro between castles and villages to keep people in line and keep people protected. This was the time of arranged marriages for forming alliances to combine clans for protection against the Norse or unallied clans. The time of men big enough to handle a sword and a war horse with ease and handsome enough to make the ladies swoon.
The Ross clan was, of course, made up of big, handsome men who were the best at what they did. They are the heroes, after all. Their focus is family first, then their people. The old laird has died, and no one misses him. He was cruel. The only good thing he ever did was marry the right women and breed good children on them. Now it is the young laird's turn to lead the clan, and all his brothers, his sister, and sisters-in-law support him completely. Each brother and sister has a book, and then it goes into other relatives. Each book is a love story and yet different enough that I wasn't bored reading the whole series over the course of a couple of days. I think my favorite story was Gideon and Alia's. The mixing of the two cultures was done beautifully, and their story was so sweet. Recommended.

This historical romance is set in Hildie McQueen’s Clan Ross series. The main characters are Beatrice and Duncan, the sister and brother of the MCs of book one. Beatrice Macdonald is a headstrong and impulsive young woman, prone to getting herself in trouble. When she wants to stay with her sister instead of returning home, she lies and says Duncan is courting her. Duncan Ross has a tragic past. Captured as a teenager, he was horribly abused. He is scarred both inside and out from the trauma. Beatrice and Duncan are incredibly attracted to each other, but their relationship is tumultuous. Duncan tries hard to overcome the mental anguish his trauma caused. Beatrice tries just as hard to help him through his suffering and make him feel desirable. Theirs is a hard fought but ultimately rewarding HEA. I recommend this book to anyone who likes historical romance, especially Highlanders. Although it is book two in the series, the romance is completely told within the it and there is no continuing plot line. It can technically be read as a standalone, but I do not recommend it. A lot of family background is given in book one. While the information is not strictly necessary to enjoy this book, it is helpful to know the characters.

Not what he appears

Duncan is handsome, fierce and a troubled second to Darach his Laird! Beatrice is beautiful, flighty and a trouble magnet! Never have I seen a lass whose mouth and impetuous nature gets her into so much trouble! This girl talks first and thinks later! Duncan hates crowds (with good reason) loves to be alone in open spaces! I was horrified to find out about even some of the horrors that Duncan survived!
Beatrice didn't mind Duncan scars and quiet manners she was able to pull a smile from his lips on many occasions! There is plenty of steam and laughter if you like the loud noises these two make! Beatrice was at home with the Ross clan and made up a courtship with whom she thought was the (wrong) brother!
But these two are perfect for one another Beatrice keeps getting into scrapes and Duncan rescues her again and again! Duncan needs her in his life to keep him on his toes!
It took a long journey for Duncan to make peace with his past and he needed love the most!! Can't wait for the next one!

liked it… But

So I super enjoyed the first book, so decided to continue with the series.. again I liked the story and character dev…. However there were 2 things I was not feeling in this book which is why it’s a 3 ⭐️ review..

1- Duncan maybe my favorite of the brothers…probably because of all the trauma he went thru…. But .. the trauma was so overwhelming each time is was spoken to in the book…it just made my stomach turn. I felt very much it could have been dialed back a bit. The other part of that, the 5 brothers know in detail all that happen to him and spoke and joked about it openly at times I felt…that just felt so far fetched… to unreal to me.. didn’t buy it.

2- Beatrice I did not care for. I get she is “young”… but the girl was not just young, she seemed insensitive and incredibly bratty. I don’t care for weak female leads, and Beatrice was in ♠️…. Duncan deserved much better.

I’m still with this and will read the next…if it’s not better than this..I’m out …

Wow!!! I rate this book at a 4 1/2!!! Only because I like a lot more action/drama. Also, without giving any spoiler alerts.... I wish the confrontation with a person in Duncan's past hadn’t end so quickly. I wanted it to play out more. However, I still absolutely loved Duncan and Beatrice's story! Duncan is a broken man due to events initiated by his father when he was a teenager. This event not only left physical scars but mental as well. He deals with it by keeping his emotions locked in and prefers to live in solitude. However, Beatrice is somehow attracted to him and feels she can connect with him (without really knowing Duncan's past). Without thinking things through, Beatrice has a way of getting herself into sticky situations. One such situation will thrust them together and becomes the best thing that could have happened to both of them! It’s a wonderful story about the power of love that can heal Duncan! Enjoy!
