It's time for Myne's (and Lutz's) baptism which is mostly a formality... until Myne sees a book, gets too excited, and collapses. Then she sees a whole library and finds a new possible career path... except there's some... problems. A lot of problems and you won't believe how this ends.
Overall, the best thing I can say about this series is that it's immersive. You really feel like you're watching a common girl struggle to make her dreams come true. Yeah, there's some magic isekai bits to it, but so what?! You can even learn a few things about DIY and the characters are great. You just want everyone to be happy.
Even though I prefer the light novels (more story faster :), I also buy the mangas for bringing the story to life and all the cute images of all the characters... the anime is nice too, but leaves so much out that it is nice to have the manga visuals too.
I love that each manga gives you a little extra story that isn't in the light novels. You don't need the extras to understand the story, it just gives you a little more character world building. This volume had a bonus story from Corrina's POV during Myne's family visit, we learn about how she feels about Benno's sudden concern over Myne and what she thinks of the family (Effa and Tuuli). Miya Kazuki really makes sure everything in this series has extra bonus value.
I almost, *almost* like this volume enough to keep. The problem is I've already resigned myself to re-reading, reviewing, then donating the volumes I've already acquired, because—as my least favourite of the threeversions—I don't really want to reserve the required shelf space for it, even IF it has unique stories not in the other two (this one, detailing when Benno tells Corinna how he knows about the Devouring).
Actually, the biggest problem is it's the hardest one for . I still remember those feelings when reading this, and the imagined future that won't happen. *cries*
That's probably the hardest part about this re-read in particular: Myne's life takes such a drastic turn in certain times in her life such that the series is broken up into very distinct Parts that are almost but not quite completely different from the others, yet somehow the cast is mostly the same (unlike, say, each part of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure featuring an almost completely different cast each time). So everything that was great in Part 1... may or may not be so great in Part 2, etc.
I do love the series, since it's one of the few that features a main character with particularly severe disabilities! (but also books, haha) It's just the twists of this chapter in specific are such a mixed bag, since it FEELS like everything is turning around for the better.
But I know better. :(
This review is probably a huge spoiler for newcomers, but I'm leaving it since if this is the first review you read, you kind of deserve it, haha. At least start with the first book? (after which you'll probably have read them all yourself anyway!)
Myne and Lutz's baptism day arrives. Myne spots a library within the temple and excitedly asks to become a shrine maiden, which her parents object to as the commoner shrine maidens are usually orphans and are basically slaves, which would be no better than her already-rejected alternative of becoming a slave to the nobles. When she goes back to the temple to tell them she's changed her mind, they find out about her Devouring and are suddenly very interested in her - turns out Devouring is an excess of manna and they're short of it. And this is where I was like...okay I've overlooked a lot of illogical silliness in this series, but if the temple wants manna then how come they aren't prowling the streets looking for kids with the Devouring? Instead kids with the Devouring are dying without treatment. It just makes no sense.
This sets up a meeting with Myne's parents where the temple wants to forcibly take her and her father fights for her. He's about to be overwhelmed by superior forces when her manna takes hold and she basically defeats everyone. They wind up with a deal where she becomes the noble-level shrine maiden and gets to live at home and keep her workshop.
So...some really silly stuff in here, but the scene where her parents are prepared to die for her is kinda dramatic, plus we see Benno's soft spot for Myne, which is kinda sweet.
That's the end of Part 1. I gather these 7 volumes were the translation of one volume of a light novel/web novel? I've already put in hold requests for Part 2, but the library only has up to volume 9 of 12. The way these were released seems kinda odd: every part was being translated simultaneously (not sure about the mangafication), so some of the volumes in earlier parts came out later than other parts. For example, Part 2 volume 12 has zero reviews on GoodReads and has a publication date in 2025 so I assume it's not out yet. Which kinda sucks for my ambition to read the whole series. Ah well. Let's see how this goes!

Y he leído mucho y bueno.
Myne's baptism exposes her to a different way she can get her hands on books through life working at the temple.
These books remain a joy - Myne is weakened by the Devouring but her determination to get to read books (even if she has to make them first!) has never flagged. Her family and friends support her in every way they can. I enjoy the bits where she comes up with something she knows from her previous life (this is a portal fantasy) that blows the mind of the people around her. In this one, it's poundcake. I will definitely follow Myne to part two of this series where she works in the temple.
I have never in my life read any manga before, but when we saw this series, we couldn't help but try it, I mean a girl that loves books, that is definitely something I can relate to! Anyway, I wasn't sure what I thought after the first one, but after reading the whole part 1 (which consists of 7 books) I definitely want to know what is going to happen next! Pretty clean, maybe 5 hells in the first 7 books, and the main character is a kid.
Damn them for making this volume almost exclusively plot-focused. As I've said previously, I love the story but it gets bogged down in details enough that I can't sustain my attention. But this was great. I'm so curious about how Myne will fare as a temple maiden but I need to set this series down for now.
Wow, there was a lot they had to pack into this volume! It was so interesting to see how they transitioned Myne from the merchant world to the temple world. I was glad we got to learn more about the Devouring too.
