I've been a fan of Laura ever since first I saw one of her Help Helen Smash videos and I immediately connected with her type of humor. If I ever stumble on any of her videos on Facebook, I might end up watching her content for a long time 👀
Idiot is a book about a young woman who had the balls to be honest and vulnerable about her struggles in life. Clery tells it all, from her personal rock bottom, all the way to the stories of how she managed to turn her life around, overcome her addictions and how she worked her way to becoming self-employed, doing what she loved. (we also learn about how she met STEEEEEVEN and how cute and awkward it all was)
Her writing is brave, inspirational, raw and brutally honest.
She is one smart and fearless woman.
Oh, and did I mention that she is hilarious?!
If you plan on reading this and have the chance to, go for the audiobook. She reads it herself, so her humor and charm shine through even more.

Library overdrive Audiobook….read by Laura Cleary

Perhaps I’m slumming down a little lately…..however ….
I’m goofing off - it’s summer - I’m 70 - it’s hot outside -
Once I started listening to Laura read her book — I was hooked.
As soon as Laura shared about a boy in junior high school who committed suicide—her entire reality of the world changed.
I don’t drink alcohol and never had a drug problem….
but in terms of basic humanity….I connected with Laura.
I loved how completely unguarded she was.
Her voice, itself, was likable. Laura is likable.
Funny, sad…..scary struggles with a happy hopeful inspiring ending.

Confession: I hadn't heard of Laura till I read this book. Saw the listing for the giveaway and thought it sounded interesting.
I wasn't sure what to expect when this came in the mail but went into it with an open mind.
I was amazed how open she was about her life and the journey she went through to get where she is today. There's a raw quality throughout this that makes her feel very accessible and also gives you the feeling that you are sitting down with her somewhere while she tells her story. She doesn't make any excuses and doesn't hold back.
It was very easy to get lost in this one. Will definitely be checking out her channel once I have more than one day off and work slows down some.

On the surface, it'd be near-effortless to pass Clery's book by, as it appears as if it quickly files under the "fifteen minutes of fame book deal" category, probably housing a couple slice o' life snippets we can at least half-relate to, and then--blamo!--stardom. Such is a natural thing to do, as I figure there are many of those coming out of the woodwork (and all due respect to those people, to be clear).
But here, there's a potent, worthwhile life story to be told. Some hard lessons learned, and colorfully recounted.
Clery's the first to give herself crap for making poor life decisions, and they lay the track to her success, displaying wisdom forged from some massively chaotic errors. The only thing that surpasses the sum of her mistakes is her drive and discipline. It's not off-base to say that, based on her comedic contributions and the content of this book, she's certainly achieving the career goals she's set for herself, and surely a role model for those to follow.
I'm admittedly quite charmed by her style of humor via her short Help Helen Smash material (had absolutely no clue she had been at her career for a while), and now this book is further proof that she's a funny writer, too. In here you'll find inspiration, appreciation, and laughs. Clery understands the connection between tragedy and comedy all too well, and it's to our benefit, because it appears as if she's really only begun to hit her stride. Hopefully we'll get to experience much more of her ideas in the future.

Mildly amusing, vaguely interesting. It was fun and frivolous living vicariously through this mentally unbalanced, unhinged, impulsive, hyperactive, devil-may-care, likely-bipolar woman. Don't think just do, leap before you think, drop your pants, drink that wine, pop those pills, dump that boyfriend, trash that job. Clery charges through her twenties like a bull in a china shop, one with a blindfold over its eyes. This is what makes her memoir mildly entertaining, watching her disastrous escapades and awful life choices, observing the personal experiences of a mentally unstable narcissist. Clery considers nothing beyond her immediate personal gratification, idiotically almost getting herself gang raped and murdered in the process. One fine day, she decides to get her act together, ditching the drugs and parties for yoga, personal affirmations, and the 12 steps program. I would have liked less superficiality and insincerity; and more depth and personal exploration through her experiences as a drug addict, and her scramble out of that lifestyle. The prose is perpetually flippant, arrogant and steeped with bravado, which works for the most part - it's as amusing as it is irritating. Meanwhile, the repetition of "you guys" to address her audience made me want to slap her.

Laura Clery is an amazing comedienne.
I ADORE her Instagram page, her YouTube videos, her goofiness, her British husband- Stephen.
She is an absolute hoot.
This book was not a hoot.
It was also not funny, not bearable and a tad (a lot. A whole fuck-ton) hyperbolic. She describes the typical bored suburban kid bullshit (lying to get cigarettes etc.) as 'dangerous, high stakes." No love, it's just being stupid and 17.
Man, I hate saying that. I wanted so much to LOVE this book. To laugh along as she deliriously was her marvelous, funny self.
It was painful to read. I felt like I had snuck my 17 year-old daughter's diary for entertainment and then shockingly realized what a vapid cunt I was raising. This is a bad analogy. One, I don't have kids. Two, if your stealing your kids' diary for entertainment you need therapy. But it's all I got. I still adore Laura, but I can never unsee this poorly, over-the-top written drudge.
Maybe if there is a re-do. Maybe she can get really good editors and calm down the absolute MANIC WAY SHE WRITES. I mean that energy is super funny for a 6 minute video, but 245 pages of Help Helen Smash was agonizing.
It took me one day to read it and it was a very long day.

FIVE STARS and if I could give this book more… I would. I have been a HUGE fan of Laura for years now. Since the first time I saw a Pamela Pumpkin video my friends and I have “upped to Jesus.” So when I saw this title available for review.. I knew I absolutely had to request it.
It is so easy to get into the mindset that these “internet celebs” just got lucky, but Laura makes her journey known in Idiot and she holds absolutely nothing back. She is hilariously raw and real.
Even though she is more known for her comedic snapchat induced characters, Clery is incredibly sweet, ernest, and charming through every page. I hope everyone will do their part in ‘helping Helen smash’ and buy this book. It is utterly fantastic.

I really wanted to love this book and was super excited when I was given access to it on NetGalley. I think that Laura Clery is a genuine and honest person who is deserving of her popularity as an “influencer.”
However, I’m super disappointed in this book and had a hard time getting through some of it because there were a lot of places where she rambled. I think that her raw honesty about motherhood is fantastic, and if you enjoy her sense of humor, you may enjoy this read. It just seemed like a bit of a miss for me.
I highly recommend checking out her social media profiles and videos before proceeding with reading this book. That way, you can feel her voice and be prepared for her crass sense of humor and her intensity that shines through the book.

This was another Mom audiobook. I was looking for something short and light, and thought this would fit the bill, not knowing anything about Laura Clery. I had seen some of her YouTube videos, mostly the ones of her pregnancy, so I knew she was funny. But I was only partially right. It was short, and somewhat light, but man, some parts were really brutal to listen to. Laura Clery is nothing if not brutally honest about herself.
I really thought this was going to be a humorous memoir, just a nothing book to fill some time… so listening to her talk about her addiction and relapses was hard, but what surprised me was how much harder it was to listen to her talk about her husband’s relapse. There’s something about it being at a remove and happening to someone she loves deeply but cannot trust or control, and just feeling so powerless and terrified for so many reasons… it just got me, man. I felt for her. And him. Thankfully he made it through and they are good now.
I enjoyed her stories about her path to YouTube, and her mental health and self doubt and relentlessness to make it. I really enjoyed her sense of humor and utter lack of shame about the things she’s been through.
For what I expected to be a quick quota-filler type book, this turned out to be an excellent memoir of overcoming addiction, abuse, and depression… as much as one does overcome those things. I guess the better phrase would be learn tools to help survive and cope with them. I’m dang proud of her for that. It’s hard work to change, but she put in the work and is now reaping the rewards, with a career doing what she loves, a lovely family, and a healthy lifestyle. Win win. :D

After receiving a free audio book, I thought I’d take a chance on this title as I found the Facebook “Help Helen Smash” pretty funny.
Unfortunately this book reads like a 17yr olds idea of a “sad story gone happy” while I understand it’s a telling of the trials of her life which, yes while not the greatest things to have chosen to do, the book doesn’t do itself any justice. Nothing is compelling. Nothing jumps out as much as she does online. Mostly seems like a cash grab because a lot of people like a sad story with a happy ending.
She made bad choices, sometimes they lead to funny circumstances... But does it make it book worthy? No. Absolutely not. The ink and paper was wasted something terrible.
Best used for fire kindling or emergency toilet paper

I first discovered Laura Clery a year or so ago while sucked in a wormhole of FB videos. I watch her videos all the time - and very recently discovered her book. What?! A book? Give it to me nowwwww!
I read this book so quickly, I didn’t have time to change my GoodReads from ‘want to read’ to ‘reading’ - I finished it nearly in one sitting (hey, who needs sleep when you can finish a few more pages. Or the entire book...).
Laura has lived an interesting and inspiring life. I appreciate the strength it must have taken to get so personal. I’d recommend this book to any of her fans. Laura is fantastic and I look forward to more of her in the future!

I went into this expecting to listen to 7 hours of Laura Clery comedy only. I was so shocked to hear about her upbringing and her struggle to get where she is. I never would have guessed it. I loved listening to her tell her story. Even in the darkest part of her past, she tells it in a way that makes you laugh.
I will say that if you’re not familiar with her content going in then this book may not be something you instantly connect with. If you don’t know who Laura Clery is, go find her social media, binge her videos, then listen to the audiobook of Idiot.

Rate of the audiobook.
Don't get me wrong. I love Laura. She's hilarious and her relationship with her husband is just to admire. But her life story made me only feel sorry for her and I'm sure it was not the point.
I'd rather admire her life now than feel bad for her past.

She is perhaps one of the most famous Youtube/instagram/Facebook stars of today. If you haven't seen any of her videos yet head to it.
Honestly I was surprised that she has written a book and was further taken aback with the vulnerability and openness in it. Looking at her today no one would guess of her being the same person who has struggled with addiction, has slipped in to it umpteen times and finally managed to come out of it.
Its a good book, with a lot of life lessons. Some of them being -
- Your child might have the most unrealistic ambition, but don't belittle them. Its those confident kids that become confident adults.
- You need to have a friend/friends who are their with you through your fuckups. These should be those whom you can call from a road coz you've been thrown out and they will come and be with you.
- Have someone who can inspire you, the one who can see what even you cannot. And if need be, knocks some sense in you.
- Fake it till you make it. Your confidence is the key to succeed, if you don't believe in your craft no one else will.
- Toxic dependency doesn't solve anything. It just leads you back in the same gutter you made out of.
- Even you are madly in love with a person, there might be a point you will have to put yourself above that person. Do it, even if it kills you.
The writing definitely needs improvement, but I wouldn't complain. In between all those faults I found a story that truly speaks what it took for a person to become the best version of herself.

I loved this book, it was written well, hilarious while also being brutally honest about addiction. I read it in one sitting as I couldn't put it down. This autobiography was a super quick read, the stories are fascinating, funny, empowering, informative, engaging, personal and emotional all at once.
This book is very open and honest. Really gives you an insight to the struggles going on inside the mind. Laura shares the struggles she went through personally and professionally to become who she is today. I love that she reveals how she overcame addiction and dramatically improved her life without being preachy. I appreciated her honesty. Laura is hysterical, raw, honest, and sincere. I love her honesty and her introspection, and I love her story of achieving her dreams in the most unlikely of ways. She may have lost herself for a little while but she found her way back to herself and thats admirable.

The only only thing I didn’t like what maybe the style of writing (since she’s not a writer and it's her first book) but I got the message which was inspirational. A good quick read for those looking for something light to pick up. Let's hope she writes another book with some of the more happy memories of her life.

Good book with a lot of life lessons. It shows how hard she worked to get where she is today. The only only thing I didn’t like what maybe the style of writing (since she’s not a writer and it's her first book) but I got the message which was inspirational. A good quick read for those looking for something light to pick up. Let's hope she writes another book with some of the more happy memories of her life.

Wow!
That gave me all the emotions!
I usually don't read much autobiographies or anything non fiction, but some have came to my sight that is a must read, this being one of them. I love Laura Clery's comedy, it's hilarious, raunchy and leaves you with a smile on your face. Then found out she wrote a book about her life and hot dang I was here for it! I didn't know much except for the small portions she put in her YouTube channel, but even that didn't prepare me for what I was gonna uncover. She is raw about her addiction and being, no sugar coat at all! She adds humor to ease tensions as one does in a dark times, but she is very serious about her health and her family's, it's refreshing, heartwarming, dark, and real. It brings light to addiction and yes not every addicts the same, they still have a story and reasons, doesn't excuse their actions but it doesn't make them a one dimensional person either, humans are all complex, and they can change.
I recommend this novel to EVERYONE! especially the audiobook (it's narrated by Laura Clery sooooo 😂)

I went into this book totally blind. I hadn't ever heard of her and had no idea about what she did or how she became who is she is. I found her story a little younger than me regarding the projected demographic, but overall, her story was in fact interesting and eye opening. I would surely tell you it has a message in it. I would also say it was worth my time. It falls on you to decide if she is worth your time. I liked it in the end.

This was interesting and an ok listen. It's been a really long time since I've read any sort of autobiographical book, but I love Laura and really wanted to know all about her struggles to get where she is today.
Again this was interesting, and kind of crazy. It's hard for me to believe that people really live this way and don't have the support system that I grew up with. I would never have just up and left my family to go to LA, NYC or Mexico...but I never even thought about doing cocaine or heroin, so....

Ok, I will be the first to admit that a biography/memoir is not my first choice. However when I heard that the genius behind Help Helen Smash was releasing a book I had to do more research. From there I found that she was writing about her time before youtube and Facebook and social media period...
To me this was already a hit, but then I found out what that time included... Then I was hooked I had to read this book!! Im so so super happy I did. Lauras book is relatable and written in a humorous but honestly blunt manner. Her trials through her own addiction and what it had caused her mentally and physically was really relatable for me. I have dealt with addiction and still deal with PTSD and Bipolar b disorder, so for ne to hear someone be honest about failing but getting back up was what really touched me and made ne fall harder for this book!!
I already loved Laura and her hilarious videos, but now I can actually relate to her and it gives the reader a really personal effect. Great job girl!!

I felt like the pacing of this book got kinda funky in the middle of the book, but the last chapter superbly tied it together. It’s an honest depiction of addiction and Laura does not sugar coat her experiences. I’d definitely read more of her work in the future.

It was really like a self help book for me to see how she made it through life just being a someone who is not afraid to say that she made mistakes, not the best role model but still can turn it around. Finished it in a day!

I haven't seen most of the Help Helen Smash videos, but I've seen a handful of Laura Clery's more recent videos and absolutely loved them. The woman can definitely write. The book is entertaining and funny while also not shying away at all about talking about the author's struggles with addiction and relationships and self-image. I'm impressed with her drive and determination, especially knowing how easy it would have been for her to give up on her dreams and let addiction rule her life.
I wish her a long happy future of making people laugh, and if she writes that book about having a baby, I'll definitely read it.

I loved this! I saw Laura Clery talk about the book in one of her videos and I knew I wanted to read it. If anyone else wants to read it, I recommend listening to the audiobook with her reading it; it was fun to listen to her and to hear her voices and reactions.
