Cruz, Sailor, and Emmett, along with their new ally Bryndis, embark on their first globe-trotting mission aboard the ship Orion. Cruz jumps right back into school and starts using the latest technology in submersible underwater dives, but is soon reminded of the dangers of exploration when his equipment fails and he almost drowns. Determined to keep his eyes on the prize, Cruz sneaks away to try to find answers, but unknowingly lures his friends into bigger trouble. When a friend of Cruz's mom meets an untimely end, Cruz's luck really seems about to run out and the questions multiply. What does the message mean? Where will it lead? Who is following him? And why?

Cruz and his friends are searching for clues left behind by Cruz's mother, on a quest that will take them to Norway and Iceland. The team stops along the way to do some underwater diving, help some whales in trouble, and tour the beauties of Norway in between their Academy classes and explorer training. Cruz and Emmett soon discover that there are spies on board the Academy's flagship, Orion, and they don't know who to trust. When Cruz's diving equipment fails and puts his life in danger, it only makes him more determined than ever to find some answers.
I didn't think it was possible for this book to be even BETTER than the first one, but WOW! I am so crazy impressed with this series.
The plot is non-stop action with tons of wonderful adventure, mystery, puzzles, spies, betrayal, high-tech gadgets, and of course, the fascinating characters. I loved reading so many true facts about exploring, conservation, wildlife, history, and Nordic culture, all perfectly interwoven with the story.
There is one scene about saving these whales in trouble, and it was so beautiful and touching that I started crying while reading in public! It was just so heart-wrenching and sweet. (Don't worry- the whales are fine.)
I loved the dynamics between characters, both Cruz's friends and classmates, and the teachers and scientists that interact with them. Every character is memorable and interesting. Cruz especially is very relatable and charismatic, and I was cheering for him in every chapter. I connected with many of the characters on an emotional level, and so many of the new characters have a question mark hanging over their head- "Can we trust them? Are they a spy for the enemy?" It raised so much suspense, and lent significance to every little thing.
The beautiful Nordic landscapes, both in Iceland and Norway, were truly incredible to read about, and sent me searching for photos on the internet, curious to learn even more about these rich cultures.
The writing is excellent, and really draws you into the story. I could barely put this book down and read it in two days! Can't wait to read more from this series.

Lesenswert!
FINALLY ive been reading this book for SOOO longggg!!!!!!! I don’t think ima write a review but idk, anyway this book was rlly good not as good as book one but rlly good.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
We return to 'Explorer Academy' aboard the Orion, the 'flagship of the Academy's fleet' in this excellent sequel to The Nebula Secret. Split into teams, Cruz Coronado and his classmates continue their unique education while traveling across the globe. Cruz is determined to continue looking for the secrets his mother has left for him and in the meantime, he and his team, Team Cousteau, stay busy learning, inventing things, cracking codes, and more, for grades! But the secret organization that Cruz is hiding his mother's secrets from will stop at nothing to get what they want.
This is such an amazing series and I would expect nothing less of a National Geographic imprint! If you've ever enjoyed pouring over National Geographic magazines, educational books, or watched their documentaries, you sure to enjoy this fast-paced and adventurous middle-grade series.
Explorer Academy accepts only the brightest and best for their unique boarding school. Kids in this school learn all about science, technology, conservation, and more, all while being physically immersed in hands-on activities and adventures that will prepare them for real-world situations. In The Falcon's Feather, Cruz gets some first-hand experience steering submersibles and diving to save the whales!
These books are filled with fun content, learning opportunities, and lots of illustrations imposed over quality photography. There's also 'Truth Behind the Fiction' section included that explains some of the science, technology, and other advancements mentioned within this sequel!
Another fun book in the Explorer Academy series which entertains and also educates. Great combination for a juvenile audience.
The only quibble I had was that this book seemed to just...end. Picture someone you are having a conversation with then all of a sudden, in mid-sentence, they leave. That's how I felt with this ending. I even looked to see if I had skipped some pages, but no. I realize the story is continued but I think it could have ended a little bit more smoothly.
Another amazing book. Everything I said about the first one, applies to this one as well. Fantastic series so far; I'm excited for the next one. Kids are capable of amazing things!!
For what these are, Explorer Academy books are pretty good. My son discovered them in 5th grade and loved them. Now he’s in 7th and he still thinks they’re okay, but “a bit outlandish”. I like that there’s real science in this sci-fi.
Picked up the second book in the series to find out what happens to Cruz. A great book for kids, but honestly, I'm enjoying it just as much! The adventures continues...
Why I chose this book: After The Nebula Secret, I am excited to review this follow up from National Geographic. A review copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.
Review: The Falcon's Feather picks up right where its predecessor left off: Cruz and his fellow students are aboard the Orion for their semester at sea with the Explorer Academy. In addition to the curriculum, Cruz, Emmett, and Sailor are trying to decipher a clue left by Cruz's mom. Each clue will lead to a puzzle piece and the next clue. Once Cruz has found all puzzle pieces, he will have the formula for a powerful drug that can cure some of the worst diseases and injuries. Nebula Pharmaceuticals does not want this formula found, of course. In fact, it is they who caused the death of Cruz's mother and they who are behind the attacks on Cruz himself; this Big Pharma company will stop at nothing to stay obscenely profitable. One of the exciting developments in The Falcon's Feather is that we are given a firsthand glimpse of the villain's plans, and we find out that a student is working for them! The suspense was killing me as I read! Fear not, you can read on with no spoilers.
The groundwork for the series was laid in the first book, and now we get to accompany the youth explorers on their first mission. Cruz's class is asked to help rescue a pod of right whales, several of which have become entangled in fishing nets. The technology is again amazing, with a translator that interprets whale-song and allows Cruz to send a message of assurance and aide to the whales while his teammates cut the nets away. As before, back matter informs the reader about the real-life inspiration for events and gizmos (bycatch is a significant threat whales, but there are smart buoys that monitor whale presence in shipping corridors). It comes as no surprise that a book put forth by National Geographic would highlight endangered animals, man's impact on them, and man's responsibility. The second adventure for Cruz and his friends features melting glaciers and environmental change. These issues are the backdrop for the adrenaline rush that is Cruz's search for the puzzle piece, which takes him all the way to Iceland!
The diverse preteens are coming into their own as young people do over the course of a school year, developing friendships and crushes, making mistakes, and supporting one another. (But throughout, one can't help but wonder who the traitor is.) And as Trueit introduces animals and locations, she paints such vivid images that you can easily imagine yourself alongside Cruz. Again, the storytelling, the story, and the background message make for a thrilling and timely novel. Definitely a series to follow!
One of my favs of the series (besides the Star Dunes of course, cuz it's the best💖😉)!
Language: Nope, besides just h*ck, d*ng, and g*sh.
Violence: A character dies, not described tho.
Magic: N/A
Man, I keep saying this but I really, really forgot just how much I love these books, maybe even more than the first time around!💖🤩 This one is one of my favs tho! (Tho I haven't read the last two, so opinions may very...lol) it's a lot more fast-paced than the first one which is right up my alley!!! And I love the artic setting as well, very cool! And the Seed Vualt!🤩 As usual the characters are always great! Love these guys and girls!!💖🥰 and alas, I promised myself I would not fall for a certain character again *glares at said character* but I couldn’t help it! They're just so cool, until they're not, if you know, you know. *sighs* I have just had a blast with this re-read so far! Can't wait to get to the Star Dunes, my fav! (I have a weak spot for Dugen, what can I say?😊)
Cruz and his friends are traveling the world aboard the Explorer Academy ship, honing their skills and, in Cruz’s cases, chasing the pieces of the artifact that his mother left for him. With the help of his friends, Cruz might survive long enough to find her legacy.
Cruz’s story has enough danger and intrigue to keep a kid’s attention, but I hope it doesn’t take another book for each piece of the artifact. The whole Explorer Academy set-up doesn’t make any sense to me still. It’s a lot of money to spend for a school for a small group of kids who train more like spies than scientists.
Naudin jätkuvalt värvika pildimaterjaliga ja teadusliku aluspõhjaga seikluslikku noortelugu, kus Avastajate Akadeemiasse õppima läinud noored teaduslaeva Orion pardal mööda ilma ringi seilavad ja Cruzi ema jäetud mõistatust lahendada püüavad. Seekordses raamatus jõutakse Põhja kargetesse vetesse, suheldakse vaaladega ja külastatakse Teravmägede seemnepanka. Muidugi on oletatavast kuulsust toovast avastusest huvitatud ka juba esimeses raamatus tuttavaks saanud kurikuulus Nebula, kelle saadikud Cruzi pidevalt kimbutama. Ülimalt mõnus lugemine. Kahjuks olid seekordsesse raamatusse küll mõned lohakusvead sattunud, mille suhtes väga kriitiline olen, kuid sisu väärtust see muidugi ei kahanda.
If a series or book is good enough that I will read it multiple times, everyone will love it. These books are perfect for pre-teens and teens who wish to grow up and be conservationists, journalists, photographers, and more.
My name is Emmet, and we've finally set sail on Orion. Cruz, Sailor, Lani, and I have figured out the Explorer Academy flagship must travel to Norway to locate the next piece of a secret formula for a miracle medicine. However, the captain and Cruz's aunt are the only other people on the ship who are aware of our search. Nebula Pharmaceuticals will do anything to stop us, including murder. We know they have spies everywhere, so we don't know who can be trusted. I've set up surveillance and security equipment in my room, so we can see if anyone tries to steal the journal and the first stone Cruz is hiding. However, the Orion has been hailed for a rescue mission to save a pod of whales, so our search for the next part of the formula will need to wait.
You should read the first book in the series, The Nebula Secret, before reading this one. The author included some pages from some members of Nebula, so I was able to gain some insight into the mind of the main antagonist. There was a hint that one of the Explorers is spy for him, so that kept me wondering about this character's identity. I liked how Lani, Cruz's best friend in Hawaii, was still included in the story even though she wasn't a member of the academy. Cruz's feelings for her were unclear, since he became a little jealous about Lani spending time with another boy. On the other hand, a female Explorer is interested in Cruz, so he was forced to deal with those emotions himself. You should have an interest in science, mysteries, and the environment to enjoy this book and the series. The Academy's main purpose is to protect the planet, and the Orion sails the ocean on expeditions and nature-saving missions. The plot includes information about animals in nature, conservation measures like the world seed bank, and historical events around the world. You can learn some interesting facts about our planet. The book is full of impossible inventions that add to the fun-factor of the story. I won't try to describe them, but rest assured they're imaginative and impressive. Overall, this series won't appeal to everyone, but I'm enjoying the fresh characters.
This book was pretty cool actully. Training to be explorers in a super fancy academy AND some secret organization wants you dead. Oh also mother is dead but it wasnt an accident.... it was MURDER!!! Now with the help of his friends Crux is trying to figure out the formula his mother left behind for him, and the reason for her death.
Exept it keeps turing the spy dude people are people Cruz " Has a bond with " or sm , and won that he got in like 2 chapters. Also im sorry but what kinda murder attempt was that. They relize that he is gonna be with other children and PROFESSIONALS. At least attempt to separate him before having it malfunction.
The story line felt REALLY thrown togethar and a lot of things that kinda seem important get thwon out the window. Like " he has a fever of 99.8 and might grt worse" well at the end of the cahpter he falls asleep ealry and the topic isnt brought up again. Also when he almsot drowned, you really telling me after a little air he regained consciousness?? Like didnt even faint after the boost he got from his body??? Dude- you almost drowned, but i dont see that affecting him.
I kinda feel- meh about this. And like i dont really care about the characters at this point. Like - meh whatever, i hope Cruz gets eaten. You wiuld also think there would be more than one murder attempt on the ship, rght? There isnt. This book can be reallyy slow paced in the important parts and adds alot of dumb stuff we dont need. Im keep reading just cus i wanna see who else is gonna magicaly apear and betray Cruz

Teine osa "Avastajate akadeemia" sarjast, kus maailma saavad päästa ainult teismelised lapsed.
Teiseks, need lapsed oleksid pidanud abi küsima.
In this second book of the Explorer Academy series, Cruz Coronado is back with his friends fighting against Nebula and things are as exciting as ever. In this second book of the series Cruz is on a personal mission to look for a formula or serum that regenerates human cells. With the help of his mom, in a holo journal with clues to find the pieces which are clues, he and his friends are on the hunt. The puzzles pieces are a laser-etched piece of marble broken and hidden around the world. Cruz wears the first piece around his neck.
Nebula, the bad guys, have an explorer spy working to get close to Cruz to get his holo journal to find the pieces. Their mission is to kill Cruz before his 13th birthday and also illuminate Malcom Root, the Academy librarian for failing to kill Cruz in book one. In the meantime, Cruz and his friends are still students and are engaged in various learning missions and so much more.
Author Trudi Truett has created a series that kids who are interested in technology along with a serious adventure will be engaged and love the many characters and their scientific skill. This fast paced read shares puzzles and illustrations that provide insight and interest for readers. Parents and teachers will approve of this exciting read and suggest that even the kids who doesn’t like to read will be able to sink their teeth into this fascinating read.
It’s called falcon’s feather but the feather isn’t mentioned until almost 75% of the book is over. The build up was super slow and then all the action is in the last 50 pages. You know Nori is going to die. You know that they are going to be okay after the bad guys collapse the cave on them and then it’s over.
I liked the first one better so far. This one was just eh. It continues the story but if his mom was trying to save her secret formula and she thought she would get killed for it… publish that online duh. Why separate it out and hide it for only one person who is a child when it happened? It sounds like it took her longer to hide everything than it did for her to come up with the formula. just because she was part if the Explorer Academy doesn't mean they were just traveling around to these places. And if she did travel to these places with the Academy… they would have a record of them. That would make it all way more simple to find a human world changing formula that everyone should have…that I still don’t know why she hid it and split it up instead of sharing it if she really cared about people.
#FirstLine ~ A head popped around the doorway of cabin 202, a thick hazelnut ponytail swinging from the top.
This book is so great for kids. It is a wild and action-packed adventure that kids (and parents) will love. I adore that The Falcon's Feather is book two of seven to be released in this series. My son fell in love with the first book and has been totally engrossed in the second. The book is based on real-life science, exploration and mission of the National Geographic Society. This is what sets Nat Geo apart from all the others. With the action packed adventure, code breaking and exploration this group of students will attend the Explorers Academy and get to really dive into a thrilling quest. All kids will be able to relate to the characters, will get immersed in the science and will love traveling the world. This series will be a hit and we cannot wait to continue on the adventures.
Explorer Academy #2 is another adventure set in the context of cutting edge and even sci-fi technology. Young, brilliant middle-school students have been selected to attend this amazing scientific institute for young explorers. Cruz, Sailor, Emmett, and Bryndis are among the cast as the teens begin their first global mission aboard the ship Orion.
In addition to the exploration, Cruz is involved a dangerous adventure to discover secret experimentation conducted by his mom before she died surrounded by suspicious circumstances. I like this series so far, but my advice is to read the books without too time in between. Book two assumes that you had a good recall of many of the specifics discovered in book one. I remembered the basics but some of the details were lost since my early February reading of Book one.
I will attempt to read Book three in the next few weeks.
