A fun, spooky, middle-grade, horror with a surprise ending.
Jasmine just moved to Gold River from Florida. And her 7th-grade class is coming up on its traditional dare night. Where everyone who is someone shows up to stay in the Carlisle Hotel. A local legend as a haunted hotel. No one has ever stayed the full night yet. Jasmine and her two friends Mira and Rohan join the class. But things soon go terribly wrong.
I really liked this book. Starts out pretty typical of the author's writing. This is fine by me as I am a fan. But the ending was one heck of a twist. Definitely different from how these books usually end. It was nice to see the author shake it up a bit.
I was suffering a bit of a reading slump and I needed something short, fast, fun, and easy to read to help me get through it. This worked out perfectly. And I already had it on my shelf having just bought a bunch from my daughter's school book fair.
It is geared toward a younger audience than me, and I try to keep that in mind when I decide my rating. For me as an adult, I give it a 3 star. I really enjoyed it, but it was super simple and short. But looking at it from a 12-year-olds perspective. I could see it getting a 4-5 star, with it being their age and it is a bit spooky. So I gave it a 4 star.

I love a haunted hotel setting, and this one really shines in the middle-grade creepy genre.
Good writing, good details, and good twists. K.R. Alexander is definitely a go-to author for all the paranormal vibes, and I'll be sharing this one with some tween/teen horror fans.

I initially wanted to give this a 2/5 but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't vastly entertained at times. The story follows friend group Jasmine, Mira and Rohan who check out a spooky haunted hotel after being dared by Bradley, the school's bully who clearly needs a hobby or a girlfriend or something. The story is told from Jasmine's perspective and we learn early on that she's new in town, having recently moved from Florida. Going into this, I knew something about the author being a fan of twist endings, but I was still not happy at all about the fact that you could see the ending coming from a mile away. I was stunned at the reveal because I thought there was no way the author would make it so obvious. My other gripe is that it dragged like crazy in the middle. On the bright side, the book features some dark elements for a middle-grade horror book that I wasn't expecting. I'd recommend this if you don't have anything else to read, but don't go in with high expectations.

Na het overlijden van haar moeder verhuist Jasmine met haar vader naar Gold River. Daar staat het verlaten Carlisle Hotel, waar precies 33 jaar geleden in één nacht alle gasten zijn overleden. In Jasmines nachtmerries lijkt het of het Carlisle haar roept. Als een vriend voorstelt om mee te doen aan de Uitdaging om een nacht in het hotel door te brengen, ziet Jasmine dit als een kans. Nu kan ze misschien ontdekken waarom het verlaten hotel haar zo in zijn greep heeft. Al gauw komen ze erachter dat kamer 333 de enige kamer is die écht leeg blijkt te zijn en Jasmine krijgt steeds sterker het gevoel dat de kamer honger heeft naar nieuwe gasten…

Hongerig was ik. Hongerig naar een adrenaline shot. Een adrenaline shot veroorzaakt door een griezelig boek. Griezelen behoort namelijk tot één van mijn favoriete bezigheden. Een dag niet gegriezeld, is een dag niet geleefd. Haha.
Dus toen 'Kamer 333' van K.R. Alexander op de mat plofte, ontschoot mij een gilletje. Een gilletje van blijdschap, in dit geval.
In 'Kamer 333' staat het verhaal van Jasmine centraal. Dankzij de fijne schrijfstijl, die we gewend zijn van K.R. Alexander, en de korte hoofdstukken leest het verhaal heel vlot. Het verhaal deed mij denken aan diverse horrorfilms die ik gezien heb en het Carlisle Hotel is de perfecte setting om een spooky vibe te creëren.
Maar helaas voelde ik die spooky vibe niet. Er is een dunne lijn als het gaat om de geloofwaardigheid van een verhaal. Hierbij spelen meerdere factoren een belangrijke rol. Zo moet ik een verbinding kunnen maken met de personages en helaas lukte mij dat met deze personages niet. De personages werden nauwelijks uitgewerkt en voelden voor mij vlak aan. Daarnaast gingen bepaalde ontwikkelingen te snel en was het verhaal soms verwarrend, waardoor ik op afstand bleef.
Bij de plot vloog het verhaal, voor mij, helemaal uit de bocht. Wél denk ik dat dit boek beter tot zijn recht zou komen als film, zodat de ideeën die K.R. Alexander in zijn hoofd had wellicht beter overkomen. Helaas kon hij mij met dít boek niet overtuigen. Ik geef het **

'Kamer 333' is inmiddels het derde deel in de Horrorland reeks. Ook deze flaptekst en cover spraken mij ontzettend aan. In dit verhaal maken we kennis met Jasmine. Ze voelt zich aangetrokken tot het hotel, maar weet niet waardoor dit komt. Jasmine is niet heel erg populair en ze wordt gepest. De enige vrienden die ze heeft zijn Rohan en Mira.
Elk jaar wordt er in het hotel 'de Uitdaging' gehouden: je moet een hele nacht in het hotel blijven. Het drietal besluit om mee te doen. Hopelijk zijn ze hierna van het gepest af...
Het verhaal klonk voor mij veelbelovend en zoals ik al had verwacht was de schrijfstijl heel prettig. De spanning voel je vrijwel al in het begin. Naarmate het verhaal vordert neemt dit alleen maar toe. De gebeurtenissen in het hotel zijn leuk bedacht, maar alles gaat in een razendsnel tempo voorbij. En dan is er het plot... Iets wat echt totaal onverwachts kwam en ik weet niet goed wat ik er van moet denken. Er zijn namelijk nog zoveel vragen. Het verhaal voelde voor mij dan ook niet compleet, helaas. Hierdoor ben ik ook wat gezakt met mijn beoordeling...
Toch kijk ik uit naar het vijfde deel (Duisternis), die je inmiddels ook al kunt lezen!

Alex R. Kahler, known for his Runebinder Chronicles YA fantasy series before launching into middle-grade horror under the pen name K.R. Alexander, takes us to a haunted hotel in Vacancy. Seventh-grader Jasmine was a social outsider in Florida at the time of her mother's death, but now she has moved back to the town of Gold River, where her parents met. Jasmine is haunted by nightmares about Gold River's Carlisle Hotel, where decades ago all the guests died one night under suspicious circumstances. In the nightmares, Jasmine wanders the cavernous hotel toward inevitable death. Part of her believes this is her destiny.

Jasmine makes a pair of friends, Mira and Rohan, which is better than she fared in Florida. As part of a local rite of passage, Jasmine accompanies a group of kids her age to sneak inside the abandoned Carlisle Hotel overnight; whoever is last to leave gains the respect of their peers, a commodity Jasmine, Mira, and Rohan are in short supply of. Bradley, the school bully, never lets them forget their degraded social position, and here is a chance to rectify that. Once inside the hotel, though, it's clear the place is home to paranormal horrors. A ghostly figure who calls herself the Grand Dame terrifies the kids, and the hotel itself commences killing them one by one. Are Jasmine's recurring nightmares a sign she's meant to break the curse, or harbinger of a fate worse than she realizes?
The story at times is slow and low stakes, but my real issue is the twist. The narration lies to us repeatedly to set up the big reveal. That's not clever, it's a cheap trick. The concept could have been good were it written in third person, but even then proper care would have to be taken. I rate Vacancy one and a half stars because I appreciate the tone the author tries to set through elevated vocabulary, but he's capable of a better horror novel.

From the scary hotel premise that doesn't disappoint in scare factor, to the relatable characters and growing friendships, this book is a solid read for fans of ghost stories and just plain ole creepy vibes. The plot twist at the end was a shock to say the least, but still made sense and was a great way to end things. I'll be checking out more of this author's work in the future.

2.5 stars. It was just really cheesy and I lwk hated the ending like it was a good plot twist that kinda gave IT vibes but I hate the main characters attitude like pipe down. Anyways I recommend this to any readers age 13 below

Decided to check out some middle grade horror. I thought it was pretty good. Had a nice little twist at the end that I didn't see coming. It's about a group of high schoolers that take a dare every year to see who can stay the longest in a haunted hotel. Let's just say things do not go very well. There is no really like hardcore horror in this book, so it's good for the kids. Check it out if you are looking for a simple and fun read.

K.R. Alexander heeft ons met zijn eerdere boeken in deze serie al laten zien dat hij erg goed is in het opbouwen van spanning en het creëren van een naargeestige sfeer in zijn verhalen.
Ook in ’Kamer 333’ laat hij ons weer een angstaanjagend avontuur beleven.
‘Kamer 333’ is geschreven vanuit het perspectief van Jasmine in de eerste persoon, die na het overlijden van haar moeder een nieuwe start maakt op een nieuwe plek en op een nieuwe school.
Samen met haar nieuwe vrienden Rohan en Mira behoren ze echter tot de buitenbeentjes van de school.
Ieder jaar vindt er de ’Uitdaging’ plaats. Met de gehele klas een nacht doorbrengen in een verlaten hotel dat een bizarre geschiedenis kent.
De jongeren die het langst durven te blijven, worden als helden onthaald. Vastbesloten hier aan deel te nemen om voor eens en altijd van het gepest af te zijn, sluiten de drie zich bij de rest van de klas aan.
Tot dat blijkt dat het niet zomaar een uitdaging is.
K.R. Alexander heeft net als in zijn eerdere boeken een fijne beeldende en meeslepende schrijfstijl.
Hierdoor neemt hij je meteen mee in een verhaal waarin de spanning direct vanaf de eerste pagina wordt opgebouwd.
Ondanks dat het perspectief van Jasmine met vlagen zeker intens is, miste ik wel een duidelijkere uitwerking en verdieping van haar personage. Ditzelfde geldt ook voor de andere aanwezige personages. De personages voelden oppervlakkig.
Daarnaast leek het ook alsof K.R. Alexander behoorlijk veel haast had met dit verhaal. We vallen eigenlijk middenin de gebeurtenissen en er is weinig ruimte voor de opbouw van een basis.
Hierdoor voelt, ondanks de opbouwende spanning en gebeurtenissen, het verhaal te snel en hier en daar wat afgeraffeld. Voor een goede uitwerking van het verhaal en het inlevingsvermogen had het wat mij betreft echt iets langzamer gemogen.
Dit voelde voor mij anders dan zijn voorgaande boeken.
Wat ik absoluut kon waarderen aan dit verhaal was de twist aan het einde. Die zag ik niet aankomen en het gaf het verhaal een heerlijk extra duister en sinister randje!
Conclusie
Met ’Kamer 333’ heeft K.R. Alexander ons zeker weer verrast met een griezelige pageturner welke je aandacht van begin tot einde vasthoudt.
De korte hoofdstukken in combinatie met de beeldende schijfstijl en de bizarre gebeurtenissen, maken dat je door het boek heen vliegt.
Wel had de opbouw en uitwerking van het complete plaatje en personages van mij iets langzamer gemogen.
Maar desalniettemin is het zeker weer een griezelige toevoeging op deze serie waarvan de jeugd zal genieten!
Ik twijfelde tussen drie en vier sterren. De vierde ster kreeg dit boek uiteindelijk vanwege het einde.
Het volgende deel in deze heerlijk griezelige jeugdserie laat gelukkig niet lang op zich wachten want het vijfde deel ‘Duisternis‘ verschijnt namelijk al op 1 april! (Nope geen grapje!)

Can K. R. Alexander NOT write a good ghost story? Hmmmmm? I am wondering.
7th grader Jasmine and her father have just moved to Gold River from the Sunny state of Florida after losing her mother. When her two newest friends Rohan and Mira tell her about the 'big old Scary building that she can see' the Old Carlisle Hotel, she starts to think and wonder if this is the same hotel she sees in her dreams that she has been having.
Now, 33 years ago this week, the Carlisle was the sight of a horrible massacre. When the night crew had come on to start their shifts, they found EVERYONE slaughtered.....only 1 employee got out with their life. This week; Jasmine's school is doing the Yearly Dare Night and this is a dare that all the 7th graders want to try......can they stay and make it thru the entire night without running out?
Has anyone ever done it? Jasmine and her 2 friends are willing to give it a try so that they can prove to the Mayor of the towns son, Bradley (THE school Bully) that they are worthy. Will they be able to do it? Who was the employee to get out with their life......and who are the over 100 ghosts that haunt The Carlisle? Let's go and check this haunted hotel out! Ready, or are you scared!?
With me usually LOVING his works as an author....he usually can scare the hell out of me; this one did not do that for mebut it did make me teary eyed towards the end's reveal and twist!. Though it is still a great, read for someone just getting into the 'ghosts' and horror genre. He is one gifted author. Still would recommend this one though.

With me usually LOVING his works as an author....he usually can scare the hell out of me; this one did not do that for mebut it did make me teary eyed towards the end's reveal and twist!. Though it is still a great, read for someone just getting into the 'ghosts' and horror genre. He is one gifted author. Still would recommend this one though.

This was a really good book if you like mystery or like scary books. It is a really good book to read it has a big change in the book to, but I really like it.

K.R. Alexander verdienen het allemaal om verfilmd te worden. Niet alleen is het een spannend en griezelig verhaal, maar het is ook een boeiend boek over vriendschap, leven en pesten.
Het ik-perspectief maakt het lezen van ‘Kamer 333’ intens om te lezen. Alexander gebruikt deze schrijftechniek vaker en het werkt op de juiste manier om de lugubere gebeurtenissen in het verhaal nog enger te maken, omdat de lezer de gevoelens en gedachten van het personage deelt.
Daarnaast zijn de geesten geweldig. Ergens doet het denken aan de meesterlijke spookverhalen voor volwassenen van Darcy Coates. Gelukkig voor de jonge lezers weet de auteur het geschikt te houden voor kinderen. Al moet ik daarbij wel zeggen dat hij precies balanceert op het randje van griezelverhalen voor de jeugd naar horror.
Ook de atmosfeer is op de juiste manier getroffen: beklemmend, spookachtig en angstaanjagend. De sfeer van het lege hotel wordt trefzeker en overtuigend aan de lezer beschreven. De passages in de keuken en het zwembad zijn beeldend sterk en zijn in mijn ervaring de hoogtepunten in het boek.
De thematiek van ‘Kamer 333’ is in vergelijking tot zijn vorige boeken rijk vanwege de subthema’s. Hierdoor kan het een beetje rommelig overkomen, maar dat neemt niet weg dat dit lugubere griezelboek een plek verdient in de boekenkast van iedere lezer. Op een fantasierijke en realistische manier komt het verliezen van iemand aan bod. Origineel en angstaanjagend bevat het boek enkele heftige passages waarin dit onderwerp op een macabere vindingrijke manier wordt getoond aan de lezer. Gecombineerd met subthema’s als vriendschap, leven en pesten levert een intrigerend verhaal op.

Another very solid book by K.R. Alexander. I like the big surprise. Didn't see it coming. It's one that digs into you a bit. It's age appropriate and a good spooky book for them.

So I didn’t know when I read this it was a YA book. Since I knew when I started it I put myself into that mindset. So for a YA book it was pretty good. I loved the imagery and it felt like a movie. It wasn’t very scary but that was to be expected. It had a good plot and some good twist in it. The ending was pretty cool. Would recommend.

The first half was slow and not very horrific, but THE SECOND HALF! I could NOT stop reading. I loved the horror elements, the unreliable narrator, the twists. The SLUDGE. Ahhh! So good!

Het was wel een spannend boek met veel fantasy en toch ook wel wat spanning. Het begin is echt horror en spanning en tegen het einde is het eigenlijk volledige fantasy.

This was a fun and easy scary story to read. I like that it had a bit of a different ghost story than most and the writing was so easy to read and flowed well. Highly recommend for a middle grade scare.

Na het overlijden van haar moeder verhuist Jasmine naar Gold River. Daar staat het verlaten hotel Carlisle. Precies 33 jaar geleden overleden alle gasten in dezelfde nacht. In Jasmines nachtmerries roept Carlisle haar. Als een vriend voorstelt om mee te doen aan de Uitdaging om een nacht in het hotel door te brengen, besluit Jasmine mee te doen. Maar al snel komt ze voor akelige verrassingen te staan.
Kamer 333 is het vierde deel in de Horrorland serie en geschreven door K.R. Alexander. Deze schrijver schreef ook de eerste twee delen van de serie. Echter vind ik tot nu toe dit het minste deel.
Ook in dit boek zijn de hoofdstukken kort waardoor je er doorheen vliegt. Tevens staat ook weer vriendschap centraal.
Helaas voelde ik helemaal geen creepy vibe. Er viel dan ook weinig te griezelen. Hoewel het goed begon, ging het al snel bergafwaarts. Het lukte mij dan ook niet om in dit verhaal te komen.
De personages leer je ook nauwelijks kennen, zelfs Jasmine bleef vlak. Je zou verwachten dat je haar beter leert kennen maar helaas.
Het plot gaf een hele verkeerde wending aan het verhaal. Net zoals het einde. Beide vielen ontzettend tegen.
Helaas kon dit boek mij niet overtuigen. Hopelijk is zijn volgende boek wel iets voor mij.

Jasmine moves into a new town, Gold River, with her father. There she sees the Carlisle Hotel, to which she has felt a pull all her life. The hotel is believed to be haunted due to which, she along with the other seven graders lead by Leslie Chalmers go there to perform a dare of spending the entire night there. Little do they know, the hotel is hungry for their blood.
The plot is good with a great twist in the end. Each scene is beautifully described. The reader sees everything clearly through the eyes and mind of Jasmine. Loved the twist in the end.

Jasmine and her friends, Mira and Rohan, are the kids at school that get bullied. So when the seventh grade has their "Dare Night" they decide to show their bravery to their classmates so they won't be bullied anymore. Dare Night is when the students all enter the long abandoned Carlisle Hotel, a spooky place where all the guests staying there mysteriously died one night. All the students have to do is spend the night, or stay longer than anyone else.
This book had lots of scary vibes but I did not like the ending. It could have been so much better.

I don’t think I was this book’s intended audience. That being said, it was decent enough writing but I wasn’t a fan of the relationships in the book and how quickly they turned on each other. I also didn’t like the ending, but again, that could have been because this wasn’t written for me in mind. It had potential, but it was disappointing in the end for me.

Writing was way more engaging than a Goosebumps book, and I was ready to give this a four, but the twist at the end dragged it down to a three. I’m not against twists, but I do object to the protagonist lying to us the entire book. The target audience might think that’s exciting, though, so your mileage may vary.

It was good, but I didn’t like the ending. It felt a little rushed. It’s also not my ideal book type, I feel like it needed more detail on what was happening and how they solved the problem. But other than that it’s a pretty solid book.

Jasmine is the new kid in Gold River town. After her mother passed away, her father and she moved to this new town which was practically already her home since her father hasn't stopped talking about it. Gold River is a popular ski and holiday spot but there is an another unmissable reason that the town is famous for. The Carlisle Hotel.
Reputed as a haunted hotel now sits atop the hill abandoned and brooding, The Carlisle Hotel is one place where death and tragic lingers long after the dust has settled. Every 7th grader has a tradition dare of staying in this hotel for a whole night. And this year it's thirty- third anniversary of the Carlisle Hotel tragedy. So, Jasmine and her friends Rohan and Mira along with others enter the hotel.
But the horrors are just about to begin and it will begin with The Grand Dame.
Another masterpiece from K.R. Alexander! This book was an absolute rollercoaster ride and I enjoyed every bit of it. The book has some seriously spooky scenes with such intricate details that one can actually feel like being present in the Carlisle Hotel themselves. A chain of fearsome events takes place when everyone is inside the hotel and it escalates to nightmare that no one can escape. The characters are captivating and I really liked Mira's character although she was experiencing a ton of jumpscares and so on, she was still brave. The antagonist was absolutely monstrous and dreadful, creating impressive and daunting scenarios to instill the spine- tingling fears in them. The conclusion was definitely shocking and unpredictable thus making this book one of the best plot twist.
Readers who loves to navigates through multiple chilling and menacing hauntings with a scary antagonist should definitely check this out.
