Really enjoyed this volume. My only complaint it felt a bit short but it was the same 4 issues, maybe the complaint is I just wanted more. The art work is more anime styled.
7 years have passed since the last book. The world has changed but has it just become more dangerous. There is now a war on, and wars never are about collateral damage of those hiding. Ash must face a reckoning 7 years in the making.
Great story, like the artwork, enough action can't wait for the next volume. Finishes with a cover gallery with 1/4 page sized thumbnails of tge varient covers of each issue, and a sketch book as well.
Another decent volume from this series! I love how this series captures the grit and dirtiness of the original film so well! The artwork is also warming up to me as I feel it fits with the Blade Runner aesthetic. As for story, this one was okay, not as interesting as the first volume, but it still made me want to keep reading this series!
I really have to stop getting distracted by the latest deliveries and dropping everything to read them!
However I have to admit that this was worth it. Now Blade Runner the original film was a film that made a huge impact on me - from the fact I caught glimpses of it while visiting family so I had to wait (and I am terrible at waiting) to see the film. The fact that the immensely talented Syd Mead had so much influence on the appearance of the film (my brothers all time hero illustrator and designer) and the fact that at the time it was still a smouldering classic yet to reach its full potential.
So to see that a new graphic novel was coming out - well be still my beating heart.
And here we are the second issue of the graphic novel editions in and I just as impressed. For a media potentially a million miles away from the original film this book has all the feel and emotion as the original film (not a surprise considering Mr Mead had a hand in it).
The story is still fast paced if a little predictable but you know what, rather than being a problem I suspect that is part of a larger storyline - I suspect there is a lot more to go with this story and we are only just getting started. Now I am sure I could find out how long this series is planned for but you know what no I will ride this one out.
And the fun does not stop there either - as is usual with these books they give a hint of where they will go next - well in this one you have a Syd Mead original and the title - Home again, home again...
The second story in this graphic novel series from the Blade Runner universe takes place in 2026, seven years after the opening story. The artwork is as good as ever, & although the story has moved away somewhat from the films that inspired it I still found it very entertaining. An addad bonus at the end of the story was an obituary of the Blade Runner films legendary designer Syd Mead. I'm pleased to see that Blade Runner 2019 is not over yet. Coming in February 2021 will be the third graphic novel in the series, entitled Home Again, Home Again.
Not a whole lot actually happens in this volume, though the artwork continues to be excellent. This reads like the middle chapter of a trilogy (which is what it appears to be, at this point). Still, there can't be enough Blade Runner content in the world, IMHO, so this will do for now...
Change of settings in this volume, a place alluded at but never seen in the movie. Off-world. 7 years after vol. One (so it should be Blade Runner 2026) Ash and Cleo try to make do on an off-world colony when some combat replicants assault the place to free their brothers. The pair is of course divided and both characters will get helped by unliquely allies.
This volume is just as good as the previous one. Tight plot, good pacing, very good storytelling, good pencils, poor inking.
If book one could in some way be left at that, this one absolutely needs a conclusion. Lucky you, there’s a book 3 waiting for you out there.
I bet they kind of wished they had left 2019 off title when they got here; considering the main story takes place 7 years later, it's a weird inconsistency. Following up on the adventures of Ash and Cleo, who are now, as per the title, off world and in hiding. But when a replicant rebellion separates them, Ash gets found and reactivated by another Blade Runner, while Cleo tries to find a place of peace for herself. There's a lot of action here, and a fair bit of plot that moves quickly but is understandable. There's one plot hole revolving around a returned character that seems hand-waved away, but other than that, the book works well, giving motivations, goals, and stakes to both the humans and replicants. The art doesn't feel quite as 'Blade Runner'-esque for most of the book, but it has more to do with location than the artist's style - later issues recapture some of the feel in their setting. I also appreciated the obituary for Sid Mead as his designs are so central to the look and feel of the series.
Entertaining enough, but not nearly as good as volume one. The narrative awkwardly jumps back and forth in time, and the artwork is much more drab and less finished than the previous collection.
Pretty good, but didn't quite connect with me like the first volume. Story takes a time and venue jump. On the plus side it lets you explore more of Blade Runner's extended world, but I felt like "the off world colonies" just looked and felt like an extension of the Blade Runner LA we've already seen. I think they missed a chance to develop something that felt like it was part of the universe, but decidedly off-Earth and unique.
A book that manages a time-jump effectively. With engaging art and storytelling, Green, Johnson, and Guinaldo continue this new narrative of the blade runner world with the complex interplays of politics and survival that continue to drive the series.
This is a pretty big time skip in the book as we have Ash adopting the little girl Cleo and proceeding to raise her for the next ten years in the Offworld Colonies. She can't afford to be rich but it has kept her off the radar of the super-rich (or has it?).
I was kind of iffy about this because we spend most of our time off Earth and I was expecting a lot more decadent luxury when finally getting a glimpse of those. After all, the whole purpose of Replicants is to provide humans with vast amounts of wealth in space, I was expecting something like Elysium. Then again, Ash and "Rabbit" are living in the worst parts of said society.
I was wondering, briefly, if Rabbit was going to prove to be a trans child or nonbinary but she turns out to just have been passing herself off as a boy. I really liked their friendship with a young Replicant (which confused me as I wondered why they'd make them that age). I also liked Ashe's "partner" for the majority of the story. Hythe is an excellent and intimidating cyberpunk antagonist: the corporate mercenary.
Oophe. A rough continuation. The story picks up by going on continuous leaps back and forth in time throughout the whole volume, and it is terribly confusing. Every other page is "one week earlier", "one week later", "2020", "2034". I think (with emphasis on my uncertainty) we were three different layers of time jumps deep at the same time at one point.
The story itself, once you've been able to decipher it, is fine-ish. But that also doesn't quite make sense, and character motivations and trust are misplaced in all sorts of ways. And in the end, nothing much of note actually happened? Ash went off-world, hid for a number of years, then returns to earth. We'll see if the last volume can wrap this up.
Not typical for the middle of a trilogy to be the standout, but that's certainly the case here. I really loved Rabbit's character and friend. In general for this trilogy, I think the time-skips between each volume was a smart move, and I don't even feel as though any character development was lost, as can sometimes happen with time-skips.
This started out as ok, and then I really liked where it was going, even though it's your typical Blade Runner story and that pretty much sums it up. Good guys bad guys guns running around hide and seek etc.
If you're into that and also if you're into beautiful artwork then this is your thing.
Much like the first volume this continuation of the Blade Runner world is a worthy entry. The time jump doesn’t hurt and allows the technological advances to help further the plot/ make the twists work.
