The seasons are changing in the garden, and Poppy and Sam are stocking up for a long winter’s nap. There’s just one problem: Poppy can’t sleep! Determined to hibernate like her friends, Poppy and her panda buddy, Sam, go hunting for advice on how to get to sleep.
Other garden creatures are full of ideas on how to nod off. The bees suggest snuggling into a honeycomb. The frog says a mug of fly milk does the trick, while the ants recommend a good book before bed. But will anything help Poppy fall asleep?

Books play a very important role in the process of raising children, as well as in teaching them about the world around them. The first filter in the selection of books for children is made by the parents (guardians). Therefore, it is important to choose quality content and inspirational stories. On the other hand, books greatly facilitate the process of learning and explaining new concepts and terms through the use of appropriate language structures and images that not only stimulate children's imagination, but also help them to understand certain contents more easily. Poppy and Sam and the Search for Sleep by Cathon is definitely a book that deserves to be considered and chosen as a great addition to the family library. The first thing that attracts you to this picture book is the beautiful cover page, as well as the cute characters: Poppy and. Easy to read, with interesting content, that not only will surely interest your child and encourage an avalanche of thoughts and conclusions, but it will take your children on a nice adventure. Cute illustrations greatly reflect the content and serve as a great tool to make the whole story easier to understand. What makes this picture book a great choice for any family with children is the interesting way in which the author introduces the term hibernation, using cute scenes, the author helps children to fully understand the meaning of this term, as well as which animals spend the winter in hibernation(What I do not like about it is that some of the facts stated are not entirely accurate.). My daughter was very worried that the poor animals will be very hungry if they slept that much. Not only will they be introduced to new terms, but they will also find out more about wildlife and animals in general,as well as the meaning of the seasons and the changes that follow each season. Lastly, the readers will find several strategies skillfully embedded into the story, that will help your child to fall asleep easier at night, such as counting, lullabies or reading goodnight stories. Definitely a great picture book that will spark your child's interest and allow you a wonderful escape into the world of fantasy. My daughter was really excited, and after we finished it, she was full of her own observations and ideas about hibernation, a word she still does not know how to pronounce correctly, but understands the meaning. And that in the end she decided to send our cat to sleep all winter is just an additional funny moment for our whole family. Definitely a book that I highly recommend to all families with young children.
This series is absolutely adorable and perfect for little ones not yet ready for graphic novels but who might enjoy that format. I love miniature worlds and this is sooo dang cute with a modern little Thumbelina type happily living amongst the little creatures of the garden (don't ask me why there's a miniature panda bear (koala-panda?) but it's cute, too, so go with it). Poppy lives in a pumpkin house, and Sam lives in a gourd house but otherwise insects and animals they encounter are presented in fairly faithful renderings so there's a teensy bit of educational material here and also wee mysteries. My favorite is the first one, Poppy and Sam and the Leaf Thief, because it has a bit of an Alice in Wonderland talking flowers vibe, and even manages to make an earwig cute (and I hate earwigs)! Poppy and Sam and the Mole Mystery is a weaker story, but kids who enjoy search-and-find illustrations will probably enjoy that element immensely. I felt a little annoyed that Poppy interrupted so many creatures getting read to hibernate in Poppy and Sam and the Search for Sleep but maybe I'm just too sleep deprived myself -- I know it was meant to be humorous. All in all, charming series, between 3-4 stars for the lot. My almost-eight-year-old enjoyed them, too.
'Poppy and Sam and the Search for Sleep' by Cathon is the third book in this graphic novel series for young readers.
It's almost winter and Poppy and Sam are stoking up for a big nap. The only problem is that when Poppy tries to sleep, she can't. Sam is sleepy, but wants to help his friend out. They travel to different animals to find out how they sleep for the winter until they find the perfect solution.
This was cute, but not quite as fun as previous volumes. I like the characters and definitely the art, but the story felt a bit thin this time around.
I received a review copy of this ebook from Owlkids Books and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.
Aww this was cuteness overload. I was attracted to the book because of the colourful cover. I wasn’t glad to see that the cute illustrations continued throughout till the last page.
I was also not disappointed with the storyline. Sleep would always be a relevant and relatable topic for kids and adults everywhere.
(Thanks to #NetGalley and Owlkids for a free copy in exchange for an honest review)
Cute story about the illusive search for sleep for a little girl and a panda that is trying to hibernate. They go to each of their friends for ideas on how to get to sleep and eventually fall asleep with animals that don't hibernate. Great flow, cute illustrations that appeal to kids ages 3-7.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book for my honest opinion.
Winter is fast approaching and best friends Poppy and Sam are carefully gathering food for hibernation time. Poppy says good night to Sam and off she goes to nestle in for a long winter's nap. Poppy tosses and turns and becomes upset because she has insomnia. Whatever shall she do? She needs to sleep!
She wakes up Sam and together they set out on a mission to ask advice on how to make Poppy finally succumb. They visit the bees who are snuggling down nice and comfy in their honeycomb, a frog who sips on a mug of fly milk before he nods off, and a colony of ants who suggest Poppy read a good book which may help her reach her Dreamland goal.
Finally their journey takes them to a family of non-hibernating mice who welcome them inside their home and invite them to stay with them for the winter. Will Poppy and Sam be able to stay awake until Spring arrives just like the mice?
This is the third book in the Poppy and Sam series. This picture book/graphic novel will be a great hit with kids. The characters are adorable and the speech bubbles make them come alive. The story is educational and offers themes of friendship, caring for each other, bedtime prep, the seasons, and it gives the reader a glimpse into a variety of animals living in their habitats. This book is a perfect introduction to graphic novel enjoyment. I highly recommend this book.
Poppy, A character of color, is having a hard time falling asleep for the long winter sleep; hibernation. Her friend Sam, a panda bear, is not having any trouble at all but helps her by talking to all their animal and insect friends who do hibernate. They all give Poppy advice on what helps them to hibernate. There is a visit to a bee hive, a hole in the ground where the frog Clement hibernates, and the ant hill. None of them have helpful suggestions for Poppy though. It is not until they find out their friend Simone the mouse does not hibernate, that they have a great place to stay occupied, and that’s where they fall asleep. There are some funny parts like the warm milk that is suggested by Clement, turns out to be fly milk. Fall colors and some green, accompany this comic style picture book that would be a better fit for younger kids and can teach them about animals that hibernate. The text is set in speech bubbles and would be more suitable for reading out loud then for a beginning reader. Pre-Kindergarten Written AD +
I got this book from Netgaley in exchange for an honest review.
Well, the story of Poppy and Sam seems so cute. To be honest, I choose this book because of the cover. Then, I have no idea if this book is part of the series--but don't mind at all. We can read it as a stand-alone.
Since this book is a children-illustrated-book, I really like the illustration. At first, I thought both of Poppy and Sam is human. But, it turns out that Sam is a panda, iirc.
The story is quite simple and not that much hard to digest for children, imho. One thing for sure, I thought at the end Poppy won't sleep since she is a human. Well, seems like in this occasion, it won't happen like that. So, yeah. Won't complain it
Thank you NetGalley and OwlKids Books for the ARC of Poppy and Sam and the Search for Sleep.
It's wintertime and Poppy and Sam are getting ready to hibernate. But, Poppy can't fall asleep. Follow Poppy and Sam on their visits to their animal friends to see how they fall asleep.
I read this with my five year old nanny kid. Her favorite part was when Poppy and Sam visited the mice's burrow. The mice told them all of the activities they do during the winter. Then, Poppy and Sam fell asleep! She loved this part.
Poppy and Sam and the Search for Sleep is a really cute story about a girl and her bear who can't fall asleep. I think this would be a great story for nap-time and for bedtime.
Picture book graphic novel. Poppy and Sam are friends getting ready to hibernate, which is odd because Poppy appears to be human (though a miniature one, about three times the size of an acorn) and Sam appears to be a panda bear. But just as Sam is about to drift off, Poppy wakes him up because she can't sleep. Together they ask the other animals tricks for falling asleep and get answers such as counting honeypots, drinking fly milk, and reading a good book. When they finally decide to just stay awake with the mice, they of course fall asleep. A cute story that does have good tips for falling asleep, it would be a quick bedtime story. Apparently this is book 3 in a series, but functions fine as a stand-alone.
A cute addition to the Poppy and Sam series. The time has come in the garden to settle down for the winter and hibernate. Poppy and Sam have everything ready, but when the time comes, Poppy can't sleep- she's forgotten how to hibernate. She enlists Sam's help to figure out what to do, and together they go around and ask other inhabitants of the garden, but none of their suggestions work. Finally, Simone the mouse has an idea that just might work.... The story of cute and fun, and the reader learns a bit about how different creatures hibernate, and that some spend the winter doing other things. The artwork is adorable, and suits the text very well. A good choice for bed or nap time!
Sam is ready to hibernate for the winter so Poppy gets ready too, but she can't sleep. She wakes Sam up and asks what she's doing wrong. Then they go around to visit other animals getting ready to hibernate to find out what they do to go to sleep. But nothing seems to work. Will they ever be able to hibernate?
A little bit of silliness that takes common methods of getting your body ready for sleep and gives them an animal twist. The book also highlights a bunch of animals beyond bears that hibernate for the winter, and one animal that doesn't. The illustrations are set up in graphic novel blocks with speech bubbles. While the rest of the Poppy & Sam books are mysteries, this one isn't as much. Unless you look at it like they are hunting for missing sleepiness.
This is a book I would want in my classroom because not only does it demonstrate how to be a supportive and good friend, but the determination and teamwork to find the answer to a problem that may be hard to find. Poppy and Sam go all around the neighborhood to try and help Poppy fall asleep for the winter while all their friends came together to come up with solutions as well. The friends didn't give up until both Poppy and Sam were able to fall asleep and hibernate for the winter and neither did their friends, they all worked together on trying to find a way even when the solutions and ideas that were shared may have not been the best options for either Poppy or Sam, they were still willing to try it out.
This is a lovely bedtime story about tiny characters Poppy and Sam who want to hibernate but it's so hard to fall asleep. Everyone else in the forest has some advice, and some of it works better than the rest.
I got the English translation as a digital ARC from Netgalley. The Kindle version was unreadable because the layout didn't look right on the Kindle app on my phone. This is a frequent problem I've come across with illustrated books downloaded from Netgalley, I think my Kindle app version is probably incompatible with the file type somehow. On the Netgalley shelf app it is cutely illustrated and the images are filled with funny details.
Poppy and Sam and the Search for Sleep is a delightful little picture book full of adorable characters and a sweet, fun story. Poppy and her panda pal Sam are all ready for a long winter's hibernation - but Poppy can't fall asleep! Their quest to ask all the woodland creatures for tips and tricks for how to fall asleep is told simply, through easy language that would be fun to read aloud with a young child, and expressive, cute illustrations full of rich details (like the expressions on the tiny little earthworms' faces). All told, it's a charming book ideal for reading before bedtime with the little ones.
Thank you to NetGalley and Owlkids Books for the advance review copy!
I received an electronic ARC from Owlkids Books through NetGalley. Charming story about two friends - a human and a panda - who prepare to hibernate for the winter. Unfortunately, Poppy can't fall asleep so wakes Sam up to get some tips. Together, they consult other animals who sleep too. Each offers advice that doesn't work. Eventually, they find animals (mice) who don't hibernate and join them. No surprise that both finally fall asleep. This is book three in this series. Cathon's illustrations are detailed and capture the joy and friendship as well as the humor in this situation. Readers will love the characters and certainly relate to not being able to fall asleep.
This was a cute book about animals and hibernation. Poppy and Sam are getting ready to hibernate and are all set with supplies but Poppy is wide awake and cannot fall asleep. They go around to the other hibernating animals and ask what helps them prepare for sleep to try out their tricks.
While a note entirely accurate portrayal of what animals do for hibernation, this was still a fun read. The images throughout are two page spreads that are beautifully illustrated with cute little animals and insects trying to help Poppy. I have read another Poppy and Sam book and think they are very easy and fun reads that children will enjoy, especially if they are nature and animal lovers.
Poppy and Sam are getting ready to hibernate but Poppy is having a hard time going to sleep. They go on a journey visiting their other friends in the search of finding sleep.
I read this book with my 5 year old daughter and she enjoyed it. The illustrations are great and she liked seeing so many animals interacting with Poppy and Sam. She loved how Sam was helping Poppy, even though he was very tired and ready to hibernate. That showed her what good friends do for each other. A good read and I will look for more books about them.
Thank you Netgalley and Owlkids Books Inc. for the opportunity to read a copy.
There wasn't any particular message, it as just a cute story with reality and imagination all woven together. Kids might learn what kinds of animals and insects hibernate and which ones don't from this book. Even though I'm not a kid, I learned that ants and frogs hibernate for winter, so yay for learning things.
This one is set up much more like a comic book than most children's picture books and that also made me happy. Get those kids learning how to read panels and panel flow from a young age! Woo hoo!
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher for the eArc! All opinions are my own.
This was such a delightful story with beatiful illustration! I loved the facial expressions so much!
And besides being a cute story it also teaches children about small forest animals and what they do during winter. I really loved that the ants read books before sleeping :D
I enjoyed this short book very much and if it is ever translated to Hungarian I will by it to my little nephew.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was adorable. The illustrations were fantastic and super cute. The story was easy to follow and provided some helpful tips for getting to sleep in kid friendly ways. The backgrounds and side characters were drawn super well - there are new things to see each time you read this!
Overall, highly recommend. I'm quite sleepy myself now too.
A fun, short graphic novel good for new readers, or even for kiddos who can't read yet but might want to follow along with the pictures—somewhere between a picture book and an early chapter book, this cute adventure tells the tale of friends Poppy (pictured with light tan skin and black hair) and Sam (looks kind of like a panda bear?) and their quest to fall asleep so that they can hibernate for the winter.
I thought that the illustrations in this book were absolutely delightful and the story is fun.
I am not sure on the little girl and the panda both hibernating for winter and it might have been better with other animals/creatures but the rest of the book was great.
It is 4 stars from me for this one – highly recommended!
Ahhh! This was so cute! My daughter loved the first one so much, that when I saw there was another I knew we had to read it together right away! She said the lullaby was the best part, she was cracking up. The art is adorable, and there’s not too much text for a new reader, but we all enjoyed it together
Poppy and Sam and the Search for Sleep is a sweet and charming book about a little girl and her bear. The illustrations are cute and fun and it's a great way to teach young readers about seasons, hibernation, and tricks to fall asleep. Many thanks to Owlkids Books and NetGalley for the advance copy.
This is a cute little book with lovely illustrations that my daughter and I enjoyed. It is about a girl called Poppy and her panda friend Sam who go on a hunt to try and get advice on how to get to sleep to hibernate for the winter.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A pleasant ´good night´ story, pleasantly illustrated. It helps if read in the winter to develop a conversation about animal sleep patterns in the winter. It is an easy story, with easygoing characters and a pinch of humour. Overall, an enjoyable read. Disclaimer: Book offered by the publisher in exchange for an honest review
This continuation of Poppy and Sam was insanely cute, and I liked that it had more of a graphic novel style without any narration. To me, this made it feel almost like a cartoon on TV, and I think kids might also enjoy that about this book. This book would be another good one to add to a lesson about hibernation. I really enjoyed reading this.
