TW// violence, self harm, sexism, mentions of murder

This section of the story is so underrated. It’s filled with tons of new characters, action, and lots of humor. It’s everything that I love about Demon Slayer.

Shinobu and Kanao are such wonderful characters. I love how Shinobu seems so gentle but she says extremely harsh things with a smile on her face. Kanao is a silent yet powerful character who always manages to amaze me.

"Hashira?! What is the Hashira? What does that mean? Who are those people? Where am I?"
"This is the demon slayer corps headquarters. And you, Tanjiro Kamado, are about to be put on trial."

After nearly getting killed by Shinobu, the Kamado siblings find themselves in the demon slayer corps headquarters where they meet a group of the strongest demon slayers called the Hashira. It's a place where the fate of the siblings is supposed to be decided. They can either get killed or stay as a part of the demon slayer corps. The situation doesn't look positive from the very beginning, because none of the Hashiras (with an exception of Giyuu) vote in favor of the siblings.

"If you can't tell the difference between a good demon and a bad demon, then you don't deserve to be a Hashira!" [Tanjiro]

First of all, I am shocked at the enormous difference between the manga Hashiras and the anime Hashiras. It pains me to say it, but the manga versions look... uh... weird. Tengen, Gyomei and Rengoku don't resemble the majestics designs of their anime counterparts. None of them are impressive, they just look dumb. Mitsuri is... well, Mitsuri. Obanai is the only one (except Giyuu and Shinobu, of course) who looks cool, while Sanemi... O my gosh, Sanemi looks like he jumped straight out of a horror story! He was never a handsome guy, by any means, but I never, EVER felt scared of him before. His manga version changed that.

I have to admit that I feel shocked by how heartless the early Hashiras were, especially Shinobu, but I will have a little talk about her later on. Obanai and Sanemi didn't shock me, but the rest? Yeah, a lot. I watched the anime only once, so maybe I didn't remember as many details as I should have, I remember the Hashiras differently. As good people, you know. But they weren't always like that, I assume. They all, and I mean, all (except for the best boy, Giyuu, of course) jumped into the wagon of "let's kill these kids, because one of them is a demon!". None of them listened to Tanjiro's explanations, they were all adamant for these kids to be killed. That's crazy! Only when Nezuko had been brought to a test and passed, they let go of their blood thirst. I understand that all they saw in her was a demon, they all hate demons and their job is to kill them, but what I don't understand is that they didn't even try to give these children the benefit of the doubt.

Guyuu is the only Hashira who, despite his initial want to kill Nezuko, pretty quickly realized how different she is from all the demons he had encountered, and decided to protect her and her brother, even if that meant that he had to put his life on the line. Guyuu is that man, you guys. He's unquestionably my no. 1 Hashira.

What is also strange when it comes to the Hashiras is the fact that they are a group, but not a team. It's just a group of individuals who called themselves the strongest demon slayers. They aren't friends, they aren't even comrades, they just tolerate each other's presence until they will need a reason to fight each other. That's all that it is. I always saw them as a team, I realized now how wrong I was. There was no indication that they were ever friends, was there? :(

"They were all angry. They said corps fighters these days are dropping in quality." [Murata]

Another thing I want to talk about when it comes to the Hashiras and the demon corps in general, I guess, is the lack of training for literally everybody except for the Hashiras. How anybody expects of these people to clear the missions when they didn't gave them the tools to do so is truly beyond me. All these kids died and keep on dying for nothing, because they could have get the right training all along and get stronger (the training happens later on, but, in my opinion, too late). The same can be told about the demon side, but I will talk about it a little later. Anyways, it makes me angry when I think about it, because of all the lives were wasted.

"my sister was a kind person like you. She felt sympathy for demons. Even as she died, she pitied the demons. I couldn't think like her. Pity someone who kills people? That's ridiculous. But if that was my sister's wish, then I must try to carry it out. If there's a way to avoid killing pitiful demons, I must try to find it without losing my sunny disposition, which my sister always liked." [Shinobu]

Shinobu is a character that I have trouble understanding. I get that the demons make her angry, because of what had happened to her beloved sister, but she also says that her dream is to get along with the demons, because her sister believed that was possible. Why on earth was she so adamant to kill Nezuko then? She point blank refused to listen to Giyuu's explanations of why he's protecting the siblings, she straight up dived into the killing spree. She didn't gave her so called teammate or the kids the benefit of the doubt, she didn't gave them any chance, she just launched with an attack, ready to fight her teammate and kill the kids. How did she wanted to make her "dream" come true then, if she refused to understand the other side and give it a chance, is truly beyond me. She saw a chance in Tanjiro, I understand, but what was her plan before she met Tanjiro? I will never know, I guess.

"I am never wrong. I cannot make mistakes. All authority is mine. And what I say is absolute." [Muzan]

I have to say this, I think that the author tried too much with Muzan. He isn't intimidating in the slightest. He behaves like a cartoony villain who's being violent for no reason. We had to see how ruthless and powerful he is, I get it, but did we needed to see it while he kept on killing his minions? It was such a nonsensical show of power. Why did he kill these poor guys instead of using them against his foes? He didn't think of them as strong and capable, I get it, but all he needed to do, literally, was to give those minions more of his blood and some training, maybe, and voila, he could have made a whole demon army like this. But no, let's just kill the "useless" soldiers, why not. How pointless.

Anyways, it was an enjoyable volume, despite my issues. Zenitsu is insufferable, but I liked the training in the Butterfly Mansion. Shinobu's three workers, Naho, Kiyo and Sumi are the cutest, I love their enthusiasm in helping Tanjiro in his goals. And I totally ship Tanjiro with Kanae ☺️

My scattered thoughts regarding this volume:

-Can we get more tiny Nezuko? Please? I want to see more tiny Nezuko, she's so precious...

-Wow, six volumes in and we're finally meeting the highest ranking Demon Corps members? Not bad, not bad.

-Going off of that, the Hashira members are pretty uninteresting; everyone has one personality trait (aside from Tomioka and Shinobu) but I'm sure they'll be flushed out at some point. Gotouge has done a good job endearing me to his characters so I have no doubt at least half of the Hashira will be more interesting as time goes on.

-Really quick, I did like Iguro constantly lying on his stomach, even while subduing Tanjiro, which is reminiscent of snakes and speaks to his specialty as a Hashira. Nice characterization there.

-I am curious to see how Gotouge is going to continue to top Zenitsu's freak outs because they just get better and better.

-I also think it would be fun to start a drinking game where you take a shot every time Zenitsu starts shouting because you'd be passed out in a heartbeat. But it'd be fun!

-I love my little group of dysfunctional idiots, never change.

-Tanjiro is a hardworking, generous, kind, and great main character and I wish more people were accepting of his character just because he isn't the generic "punk with a soft side" main character like a LOT of shounen series. Seriously, we have enough of those, stop complaining.

-I love this art style. I really do. Even in some of the less artistic or well-drawn scenes, I love the art.

-Shinobu's backstory was interesting and reinforced the central theme of family without sounding forced. Made me think back to the previous volume, which introduced her, and realized how her actions and dialogue make so much more sense with this context. Well done, Gotouge, well done.

-Shit is getting REAL with the 12 Kizuki. Muzan is such a dictatorial asshole, can someone please kill him? Please?

Welp, those are my thoughts. Bye!

⚔️Where swords clash, tempers flare and demon drama hits peak intensity⚔️

⚔️Hashira Showdown & Horn-Dog Hijinks⚔️

If Volume 5 was a spider-infested nightmare, Volume 6 is the awkward family dinner that follows—except your relatives are elite demon slayers who want to murder your sister (My Nezuko).

Tanjiro and Nezuko get hauled before the Hashira, the Demon Slayer Corps’ top brass, who are basically anime’s version of a dysfunctional superhero board meeting. Most of them want Nezuko dead, Tanjiro punished and Tomioka demoted for not following the “stab first, ask questions later” policy.

It’s tense, dramatic, and somehow still hilarious—especially when Zenitsu’s hormonal chaos makes a cameo during training scenes. Classic Zenitsu: part thunder, part thirst.

Meanwhile, Kibutsuji, the demon king with a flair for villainous micromanagement, decides his underlings are slacking. So he gives one a power boost and sends him off to assassinate the Hashira and Tanjiro. Because nothing says employee motivation like a murder quest.

We get top class world-building, quirky Hashira personalities and a training arc that’s equal parts sweat and slapstick.

The anime equivalent of a protein shake—necessary, energizing and occasionally hard to swallow when Zenitsu’s around.

Needless to say, that the cover is so pretty😍😍😍

This felt mostly like a filler volume, with an abundance of character introductions and not much fighting or plot advancement. The last bit with Muzan and his twelve Kizuki was the only bit that really held my attention; I’m curious as to what’ll happen with the remaining lower rank Kizuki that has been tasked with killing Tanjiro.

It’s cool to be introduced to a lot of the familiar faces that I’ve seen circling the internet because of how massive this fandom is. I really like Gyomei for some reason!

If the volume 5 was good. This was AMAZING. I loved meeting all of the nine Hashira!! My favorites so far are Tomioka and Shinobu! Seeing Tanjiro getting better, and better is inspiring.

By the other hand, learning more about the twelve Kizuki is very interesting, I'm a little sad for some of them, they probably were Kids like Rui

After fighting spider-fam, it’s time for a welcome respite, a heal-up and train-up to give the boys that little edge they sure as hell need.

I personally think this one had a great change of pace. A little humor, a little heart, and a little hope.

Man all this good stuff I'm reading lately is such a nice change of pace. Demon Slayer only continues to build its world in interesting ways with great character development and humor.

So we have Tanjiro going in front of all the corp to see if they will allow him to live and especially his demon sister. It's great to see the top tier character's all in one place, all different, and each one having a different view. It's also scary to see that little sister might get the axe! Then after that we get into the arc of training and we return to more humorous arc with some great learning moments about the powers in this universe.

The world builds as does the characters in great and satisfying ways. I also really dig all the humor still as it stays funny and the faces are great. The art is getting better and better too, especially with the fights. All the new character introduced are done so easily and nicely done. I hope this series just stays this good. A 4 out of 5.

This was actually a pretty good volume and focuses on Shinobu vs Nezuko and then going to meet the other 9 Hashiras and we meet this group of top DSC members and also we meet their leader Ubuyashiki and we learn of Tanjiro's convictions about his sister and even they are convinced that Nezuko wont kill humans no matter what and its a brutal scene and makes the readers angry but then again its so well done and then they recover in Shinobu's care and recover and train and learn new thing and more revelations with Muzan and his lower 6 top demons. Great volume and it serves to expand on the different hashiras and kizukis and sets up an inevitable confrontation and also get to see training periods and our boy learning things and also the art is GORGEOUS especially the ones of the ladies! This manga firing on all cylinders atm!

Lower ranked Corps members die incredibly quickly, but the Hashira are different.

It’s a brutal world out there.

Volume 6 of Demon Slayer again gives the best lines to Shinobu:

When I think that you're succeeding at my sister's dream, it soothes my anger... ...and I feel better inside.

…though Giyu’s sympathy towards Tanjiro and his Nezuko shows development on his part from Volume 1.

Otherwise it’s a nice interlude, with plenty of training scenes before the next step up.  Nothing too major, though the book ends with the opening of Mugen Train arc (with a bit of misdirection as to whom the main antagonist will be).

What I say is right is right.

Muzan appearing in a female form is interesting… …from an aesthetic perspective.  I do not know manga well enough to understand if this is a reference to anything – within the story itself, it’s meaningless – it’s not connected to any role he plays within the world, more something he just felt comfortable wearing one morning.  More of note is just how much Muzan despises the other demons before him and his literally “items to be disposed of” treatment of them.  He is an orthodox evil character, which is fine and perfectly alright.  I do not need it to be complicated, a straight Manichean contest works for me.

I’m docking it for still not really making Zenitsu a proper rounded character – there’s a couple of times (such as the drawings between chapters) where an alternative portrayal sneaks through, but he’s just far too much of a sex pest in the main plot.   The author is capable of clever interplays, such as when Tanjiro puts the cup on Kanoe’s head, or how Shinobu tailors her motivating words to each trainee. Rather, it’s almost a stubborn refusal to have Zenitsu behave somewhat reasonably, at least, not yet.

Warnings: self-harm, violence, body horror

With the senior members of the Demon Slayer Corps arriving on the scene, Tanjiro has to explain Nezuko's presence, and is summoned to their headquarters for a trial. This volume fills in a lot of knowledge gaps as to the organization of the Demon Slayer Corps as well as the twelve Kizuki. Tanjiro gets more training thanks to the insect Hashira, Shinobu, who also feels for him and Nezuko, and competes with her protege. As for his two irritating companions, they are as irksome as always.

There's not much to talk about the story during this volume, because a lot of it is in stasis at the moment, and is more about building up the two main organizations in the series, as well as hinting at possible connections between new and older characters. One of Nezuko's powers becomes clearer in this - she can actually change her age (I know it was sort of said that she could become smaller, in the 1st volume, but I thought in size, not age!) and her resilience to eating humans is once again proved. Kibitsuji's powers are also expanded upon - he can apparently also change forms, so that makes for an interesting complication, because if he can't be recognized...

Overall, not much going on plot-wise, but answers some questions and expands on the characters a bit, plus there are still some cool action scenes, so it is a good read.

This volume was well written. Lots of drama at the start if our hero and sister would live or not.
Then it is mostly a recovery and training montage - we learn a lot more about the Demon Hunter Corps. Kind of amazing taking what could be a mostly uninteresting part of the story and make it interesting somehow. Oh and the 9 of the Demon Hunters are either crazy or so PTSD they are worse than the demons they hunt.

Another volume up to the same standard we're accostumated coming from Demon Slayer.

Here we get to meet all the members of the Hashira, the elite of demon hunters.

We also get to understand better how the ranks of the most powerful demons are organized.

Basically, we get a deeper understanding of the Demon Slayer universe.

I'm guessing this volume is setting up the characters that will keep seeing in the next several volumes.

Really cool.

A cool cool-down volume after all the nightmarish fights, with lots of humor thrown in the mix. Zenitsu might be the favorite of teenage boys, certainly his cringiness strikes a sympathetic chord and troubles with girls might be a universal woe, but the character I like most is Inosuke. He is a riot!

The main event consists of the protagonist duo meeting the entire Hashira team! As someone who's up to date with the anime and only now reading the manga, this feels nostalgic. Some of the events are secondary, but important to the future main scenario. I didn't enjoy anything in particular in this volume sadly, so I'll be rating it accordingly.
