Hired Luck
With my best friend going to college to learn how to use her magic, I'm job hunting in Atlanta. We're sharing an apartment and I've never been happier. Although 'the thing you waited to happen all through the first book' does happen in this one, this book is also much messier than the first one. Also features as many grammar and syntax mistakes as the first one.
I like this book considerably less than the first one mostly because of the balance. While it was always obvious the main character was going to turn out to be a special cookie, she is suddenly too much of a special cookie, first of a kind, in fact. And when she is asked to help experienced magic FBI agents, she is suddenly the only one who gets the smart ideas and says the obvious things they couldn't think of without her, all while being bored and constantly complaining about being useless and having nothing to do. She might not be suffering from self-inflicted curses anymore, but suddenly the world is revolving around her.
It also didn't feel as cohesive and simply as interesting as the first book.
I like this book considerably less than the first one mostly because of the balance. Second book I've read today, second book I've by this author, and second in this specific series.
Cori's life continues, though now she's college graduate living in Atlanta with her best friend forever Jo-Jo, and working as a paramedic. Or an EMT. I do not recall if it was mentioned which she worked.
Cori's habit of wandering around and stumbling across dead bodies continues. Though they don't tend to be murder victims, like the one that opens this book here. Before you can spell Serial Killer correctly, more dead bodies are found, and Cori is dragged into the middle of it. For reasons. Spoiler-y reasons.
Enjoyable book, good solid plot, good characterization. One specific point might cause some people to run fleeing in the opposite direction, though. While the first book in this series had a few "pull you out of the book" moments, a few misspellings and odd word choices, (and one time of Cori's parents inexplicalbly calling themselves children), it was mostly easy to ignore that in the first book. Second book? It was not so bad as to say every other word was misspelled but . . sooo many weird spellings, word choices, outright missing words, and odd sentence structures. I once read a book that looked like it was written in one language, had Google Translate translate everything 242 times before reaching English, then translated one last time into Yoda, then back to English. Much better than book one
I wasn’t going to read this book because the first was so tedious but I’m pleased that I did as it’s so much better! There were questions from the first that are explained in this one though others are yet to be addressed. I’m encouraged enough to want to read the next book.
My only criticism is that the system of mage identity, while very creative, is overly complex and I still don’t understand it though I’m sure the author has it clear in her own mind.

Okay let's do it.
The first book was an extended prologue that does nothing and ends up nowhere. It also fails at everything a prologue is supposed to do. It doesn't expand or create a world. It doesn't fill in or establish stakes. It does nothing but maybe introduce some character names. There's a big tease but it doesn't go anywhere until this book.
This book in many ways refuses to build on what the previous book established. Where-- hold on let me actually look up the main character's name I keep forgetting it.
Ahh it's Cori. Hmm ok well Cori is not trained and in a new city where as before the only arc was a small town she couldn't wait to leave and then in the last third of the book she finds out the small town that she assumed hated her as much as she hated it... actually loves her and has done everything in it's power to help her. But this is the big city so when she stumbles across bodies people assume she killed them because honestly that's more normal.. or it would be if this wasn't a world where half the population can do magic.
Let's talk about the ways the world building fails

This is a world again where almost half the population has magic. And yet.... there's strong legal discrimination against mages. I don't understand how this happens when mages are clearly so much more powerful and a HUGE population. Why would they restrict themselves so hard?
What in the Jim Crow is going on.
Mages have to go to university. BY LAW. but... why? Mage skill comes in so may varieties from our main characters who can do anything to people who can barely warm a candle. If I cared more I'd go into an author who writes about a character whose biggest issue is being forced into high education but I don't have that kinda time. The big big implication is that ONLY mages go to school. "Normies" have to have three degrees to match the one degree that mages get. People prefer to hire mages but somehow they don't want them in politics? The book can't decide if people LIKE magic or FEAR magic. The book isn't anywhere close to being self aware enough try to thread the needle of both being true at the same time.
Heck we can't even figure out what happens to people who fail out of college. Is this a world where no one drops out? One character gets bad grades and is so paranoid because they have no idea what happens if they fail. At one point they posit that maybe they'll be KILLED. For failing school. This is how poorly thought out the world is. Even if mages are too powerful to let fail you have to find another solution or ANY solution since we never find out what happens. But what about the humans? The same way not ever mage is going to be built for higher education. Not every human is a dummy. Some of them must be smart. They must face some sort of discrimination for being one of the few humans in school right? Are there human scholarships? Do rich kids start college before they emerge or something like that? There's room to explore and the book does none of that.
The world is one where magic is real and religion has atrophied but prejudice against homosexuals is... thriving? It's a weird scene where a dude hits on the lesbian character and she shrinks. The lesbian character who is tough as nails. Who rides a bike, who works on cars, who hits on all the ladies and yet one dude who hits on her is enough to make her sullen and mopey. He's not even THAT offensive. I mean he's coming at like a 4-6/10. You laugh at his dick and you move on. I can understand wanting to include that sort of thing generally for realism purposes and to make a statement whether for the author or for the character (IMO this was more about giving Cori something to do). Except at Dragon*Con or as it's called in the book DragonWorld*Con where there are.. no prejudices? I love Dragon*Con. But they don't have policies because everyone is so chill. All the prejudices in the real world show up in Dragon*Con but here suddenly they melt away and no only does no one care about contemporary prejudices they don't care about the very specific prejudices we've gone through so much work to establish.

Let's talk about Cori. I'll say it.. the Mary Sue. She didn't even want to go to college. And she tries so so hard to get people to like her and every time they don't she collapses into an emotional vacuum. She both fights so hard to be a normal "non castastrophic" person and yet her personality or what passes for it is she's so special they'll have to respect her. Her specialness that isn't Mary Sue power levels is the most basic white girl things you ever heard. She loves coffee. She prefers cats to horses. She can't cook. She will speak to a manager! She doesn't constantly think to herself "I'm not into boys or girls woe is me" in this book instead she has the eyes of a teenage boy. Undressing EVERYONE with them. There's not a single character that Cori doesn't think is hot. She's not aroused by any of them and she goes through pains to make sure we know that but at the same time she's well aware of how arousing they are generally. It's super weird. EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER is conventionally sexy but does nothing for her. I'm not the most socially progressive person but if you want to have an asexual character then let them be asexual not this weird neutered version. Cori eventually gets forcibly conscripted into the magic FBI where she's privy to the highest level discussions on the the most dangerous magic serial killer that's happening around but when they determine where the serial killer will strike next (Nerd Convention) they spend the first day just hanging out and enjoying the con. I give the book half a credit because when Cori breaks the news to Jo that there's a serial killer coming to kill a bunch of people at Dragon*Con, Jo's response is to ask if they should even be going? That is the correct response.

I hope there are diagrams in the book because I just didn't have any idea how the magic was classified in this. There were types of magic, strength of magic there was almost an attempt at something interesting when we find out that strength is relative. Having a strong skill in X and a weak skill in Y didn't mean you suck at Y it just meant your Y was less than you X which would have been interesting if it wasn't completely stupid. HALF THE WORLD has magic. It's common place and no one has seen this before? The amount of magic knowledge that no one seems to understand is just baffling. We have to wait until Cori and her lesbian found family sister/partial love interest Jo goes to magic college till we find out more about how magic works and is used. But why? Everyone else graduated and they aren't all high class people. They work in coffee shops, police stations, car shops and yet somehow all but the most basic ideas of magic have "trickled out"? Why doesn't everyone have a basic understanding? What's the point in higher education if it doesn't trickle down?

One last shout out for the end of the book. I liked it. I would even say it was pretty darn good almost great. It was also more unearned than Cori's power level. The book is a bad job of being a book but basically it's the story of Cori finding out she has magic while at the same time being drafted by the magic FBI to hunt down a magic serial killer. If the book had realized that from the start and maybe started the story there this could be been interesting. Now for the spoilers.
I'm glad I don't have to read more of these. That's all. Maybe I'll proofread this next year... maybe.

2023 bk 123. I made a mistake last night - I started this sequel just before bedtime, you know, just to get a feel for if the author kept the same quality of writing in the second book. At 3:45 a.m. this morning I completed the 2nd book in the series. It was that unputdownable. The author provided a number of techniques to draw the reader in - a change of setting (same world, just another city), putting the characters in a stressful situation (Jo starting college, Cori looking for a job), another body found but this one involving magic, very angry police/FBI officers. All that angst wrapped up in a story line that kept me reading. Well done and I liked it a little better than the first so much so that I ordered the next one first thing this morning. I'm off to start it now!

Really good
Charming urban fantasy that gets more complicated as it goes on. I really enjoyed the layers here, as well as the interactions between the characters. I didn’t realize that most of my reading choices involve some type of romance in the plot, until I read over without it all. There is nothing here for that. Zero heat, zero romance, all action and magic. Its a nice change of pace.

Still no romance but a lot of things get answered. Don't want to ruin the surprise but I cried when her chosen family gets the news. I love the alternate dimension part of this story and I love the interactions that she has with all of the new characters.

Wonderful world, exciting with hints of romance
Yep it takes a while to write comments. The books 1-2 held interest and my time. The worldcraft is thoughtful and the story complete. Yes, I highly recommend all to read. Need magic system books for use in RPG!

Book 2
This is book 2 of the series, and yes, you need to have read book 1 as it’s a continuity where each book continues on from where the last left off.
Cori and Jo have moved to Atlanta. There Cori manages to get a job as an EMT, though weird things still happen around her.
The ritual killing of a woman, and then a bunch of people, thrusts Cori into a new world. Suddenly she has all kinds of new responsibilities to take up her time...
Book two begins shortly after the end of book one, and it’s a doozy. Cori finally gets some answers about the weird things that have happened, although she is still not sure what killed her twin. And forgive me for being vague, but I don’t want to spoil the plots 😉
It’s a slow paced series, a coming of age story if you will. It’s not a romance, and there haven’t been any signs of one beginning (as yet). Although action packed and adventure filled, everything happens at its own pace, which is both good and bad... good, because it’s not so rushed you can’t see how it happened, bad because it seems like it takes forever to get answers. Just like real life!
The result is an absorbing urban fantasy with a mystery, and various intriguing plot lines that always seem to be important, even when you’re not sure how.
This is a gripping epic urban fantasy series, that fans of UF and fantasy are more than likely to enjoy.

Great books
I really am enjoying these books. Loveable and a few hate worthy characters, interesting storylines. I have read the first 2 books in the last 2 days, on to the next.

A decent continuation of the series. Now that she can pursue her chosen career, the story is about her trying to "settle in" to the life that she wants. However, due to her luck of finding another body, she ends up interacting with the Police and FBI in Atlanta.
I found her interactions with the FBI agents a bad beat to the book. The agents were difficult and had very bad attitudes towards the MC. Although people can react certain ways under stress, it seemed to me that FBI agents would be a great deal more professional.
I like her continued storyline with her best friend Jo, including the fact that Jo has issues that come up, and so the entire story is not all about the MC. Sometimes, when that happens, a bubble of narcissism can give a book a bad feel.
I will be continuing with this series.

Unusual supernatural and interesting
The heroine is unusual as are her friends. Not at all the typical supernatural cast, more from classical mythology with twists of magic. I recommend this series.

Amazing!!
Mel Todd is an amazing author! As soon as I started reading the first book in this series, I was sucked in and couldn’t put down the book until I finished. As soon as I finished it I immediately picked up the second one and consumed it as fast as I could. I love the characters, they make you feel apart of the story, there’s a perfect amount of details that don’t make it boring. I’m invested in this series and will be recommending it to everyone I know who loves to read. Thank you Mel Todd for creating a world of beautiful people, creatures and adventure.

The first book was good. This one is better!
Urban fantasy where we learn more about the world as our main character learns more is one of my favorite types to read.
Okay, Cori learns so much about herself in this book while doing a new job, helping Jo, and living her new life. There are some twists that I didn't see coming and some I did. I'm looking forward to reading more books about this character.

This just got awesome
The first book was really good. But it lacked some underlying plot motivator to drive it...it moved along, but it wasn’t super clear what needed to resolve for the book to end. It was interesting and still moved, but i only gave it 4 stars. This book is a definite 5....plot in abundance, character development, humor....it’s all there. Really really love the super intricate magic system here. Moving to #3 straightaway.

a bit disappointed with this book, hence only 2 stars. first of all - Editing needed!!! I felt that the changes in Cori's character where not consistent from book 1 to third of this book - from a pretty submissive person to a much more aggressive and argumentative person in a very short time. a few plot strings that felt a little forced (no spoilers). too many food descriptions which do not contribute to the plot...all in all this book sometimes felt a little more YA then book 1.

Another Great book!
I picked this one up as soon as I finished the 1st book and was sucked right in! There were a couple of places I couldn't stop laughing! It's after 3am and I need to go to bed but all I want to do is read the next book. I loved this book! Definitely read, especially if you want a book you can't put down.

Very good book!
Book #2 is really well written. Very impressed with this world and characters. Just found this author and am impressed. You can see, just a bit thou you think you see all coming, but you are surprised pleasantly with this volumes finale . Wizards and witches and familiars oh my. Author makes you feel both the sad and the good. Very much recommend this series.

Emergent mage
Super strength doubled and on the job training during great emergency. BFF Jo also fights evil mage. Evil guy gets retribution for murderous hubris while our 2 heroines watch. Bad idea think immortal monsters are familiars.

Exciting and fast paced
This book is wonderful. It is exciting and fast paced. It is hard to not love the characters. Jo's family is amazing. Cori is a sweet good hearted character that just want a to save people. I cant wait to see where the next book takes you.

Dynamite Book 2!!!
Enjoyed this book so, so much! Usually book 1 is the best, but I found this one to be better. More exciting and with an adrenaline rush. I'm so "Lucky" to have found Mel Todd. I'm looking forward to finding her other books out there.

Great world building
Well written with interesting characters and world building. The main character is believable and the supporting characters are well developed. Can’t wait to read the next one and hate for it to end.

Another excellent read
Just as good as the first, though the editor seems to have been slacking. There were a couple of misspellings/typos of key character names in both books 1 & 2.

Loved it!
Just when I started to get impatient to know about Cori's magic, the author gives the reveal & it was perfect ☺ I'm really enjoying exploring this universe the author has created & I'm going straight into the next book!

So much fun!
This is such an interesting world of magic and creatures and mystery. I enjoyed this series tremendously. The idea of magic offering/cost is fascinating. Great characters, I cannot wait to read the next one!
