Witch Way Anthology #1

The Answer You Are Looking For Is Yes: A Witch Way Anthology

Rate this book
Within the pages of Witch Way Magazine are tales of magic and witchcraft, love and romance, creatures and spells. A mystical anthropologist desperate to find his lost brother trips and falls into another realm; a witch forced to return to her remote hometown gets trapped with the man she's pretending to date; a journalist banished to an island by her ex turns out to have a fair hand at babysitting monsters; a preternaturally lucky Millennial politician falls for her problematically unlucky neighbor; and a disgruntled tech employee uncovers a surprising secret while seeking revenge on her not-so-altruistic boss.
From fiction contributor Olivie Blake, these stories of paranormal romance, adventure, humor, and misdeeds once exclusive to Witch Way Magazine are available to own for the first time, along with a new story written specifically for the collection.

Olivie Blake is the pseudonym of Alexene Farol Follmuth, a lover and writer of stories, many of which involve the fantastic, the paranormal, or the supernatural, but not always. More often, her works revolve around what it means to be human (or not), and the endlessly interesting complexities of life and love.

Olivie has penned several indie SFF projects, including the webtoon Clara and the Devil with illustrator Little Chmura and the viral Atlas series. As Follmuth, her young adult rom-com My Mechanical Romance releases May 2022.

Olivie lives in Los Angeles with her husband and new baby, where she is generally tolerated by her rescue pit bull.

story one: stone’s throw - 3.5 stars

only olive blake can make such a short story feel so rich. only reason this isn’t rated higher is because the fae (in the traditional sense, not the watered down versions in fantasy romances) freak me out lol. okay not entirely but that may have contributed

story two: saints and liars - 4 stars

this was so cute. i will never not enjoy reading about witch families, and specially, the youngest witches of two witch families falling in love. it always hits.

story three: the golden age of monsters - 4.5 stars

the stories in this anthology really do just keep getting better because this was so good! such a fun premise and i mean, anything with greek mythology in it is an immediate yes from me.

story four: pars fortuna - 4 stars

such a cool premise, how does she think of these things?!?! unfortunately though, sam just wasn’t my favourite. i know people grow and all (and he did ofc), but him saying that he had never voted just turned me off immediately i’m sorry

story five: the immortality project - 3 stars

i liked the idea behind this one but the execution was a little confusing. i think this would have made more sense if some of the narration was more traditional rather than the main character’s documentation for her lawyer.

I liked the various short stories about witches! My favs were the middle three: Saints and Liars, The Golden Age of Monsters and Pars Fortuna!

Also I didn’t expect it to be love dovey all the other works of Olivie Blake didn’t really focus on that but I loved that she showcased more romance in these short stories!!

It had a little bit of everything in terms of romance tropes and it was a great one to read on vacation. Easy to start and finish each one!

Excited to start Grown Your Own Optimist!

Come with me, take my hand, don't let go. If you can trust nothing else, then trust me.

Oh I will trust each and every book Blake publishes.
I'm yet again enamoured with Olivie Blake's writing. After reading The Atlas Six I knew I had to get this book and it did not disappoint. Let me tell you why!

"We are always one stone's throw from collapsing into another form of ourselves, in versions of lives we cannot relinquish. Luckily, the world has a way of showing us where we belong."

The collection of short stories is a brilliant way to show off Blake's ability to write witty, diverse characters with complex lives and motivations in a matter of pages instead of entire books. I thoroughly enjoyed all her characters, even those that opposed me and what I usually tend to like in characteristics. This book made me laugh, brought me to tears, made me happy and frustrated and gave me all the good and bad emotions you want to get from a book.

She sighed. Truth be told, sirens were still more easily handled than her insufferably petty ex.

As promised in the blurb, each short story touches upon the paranormal or magical and the anticipation I got for this book by knowing how Blake wrote magic back in The Atlas Six made me adore it even more. Charming witches, godsent guardians, gender-nonconforming princes from other dimensions, gods and sirens and dragons, and business men trying to achieve immortality. I'd gladly read a full-length book on the concepts Blake came up with in each storyline. Though they were not connected to each other and each had a different, distinct way of writing, they all had a similar feeling - I like the idea that all of these stories took part in the same universe. (I think this is canon, even.)

Another big bonus for me personally were all of the mentions to greek mythology within these stories. Some subtle, others more obvious, but I was enamoured with these mentions (especially mentions of Circe, Odysseus and Hermes!).

This was Odysseus and Circe in a way; a clever plot against some mythical enchantress.

So why only four stars, you ask?
If I could give 4,5 stars, I would. While I did get my fair share of magic in all of the short stories, every one of them (except for the last story, which I liked even more for that fact) had a prominent love story. I did enjoy them, don't get me wrong, Blake has a way of writing romance that is dear to me, but to be entirely honest I did not need a straight couple by the end of every single story. Except for the last one, that is. These stories had such great potential on their own that I personally did not need another heterosexual couple after the third one. I would've easily given this book five stars, but this is something I missed. Diversity. Friendship, even. (Ain't really counting Hermes and Henry, even though the mention was nice and I really really LOVE Hermes okay)

This book is still gonna get a very special place on my bookshelf and I'll be recommending it! If you're looking for lots of awesome (adult) fantasy/paranormal romance, this will for sure be your jam!

2.5.

some of these stories had real premise, some not, but from a personal taste perspective they would have been much better if there was less romance and more focus on world building and plot. not awful, but probably my least favourite olivie unfortunately.

What a fun collection of short stories! This book was the perfect read for me while I sipped some wine and burned a candle.

While there were a few sections that didn’t particularly interest me, there were many that did, and I especially adored Saints and Liars. That story made me yearn for something so specific and that which I didn’t think I could care for. That’s the power of good writing!

I love Olivie’s style of story telling, so I’m glad I picked this anthology up!

I liked the first story. But it became apparent the stories focus were on romances that I could not feel connected to at all, and were not well developed and felt forced. The premise of the stories were cool, but the fanfiction-like writing of the romance ruined them. I couldn’t get past the Avalon story, I had to stop reading. The way every verbal interaction between Margo and Alec involved them constantly interrupting each other for some reason annoyed the hell out of me and I literally couldn’t keep reading. These romances are rushed and unrealistically quick to develop. This just was not my thing.

I LOVED this anthology! I think as of right now (since she’s coming out with another anthology in 2023) it’s actually my favorite of hers. With all the other ones there was at least one story that I just didn’t really vibe with/got bored with but that didn’t happen in this collection at all. Each one was magical, witchy, paranormal, funny, and so entertaining. The characters are also diverse which I really loved.

This collection had me swooning at times, screaming at times (in both a OH MY GOD kind of way and an angsty my heart hurts kind of way), sad at times (I did tear up), laughing at times, and it just made me so happy.

My favorite story was “Saints and Liars”- Cecily and Porter are EVERYTHING to me. I love them as much as I love the couples from some of her full length novels-like I’m actually obsessed with them and wish I could have more of them.

Anyway loved this and loved getting to end my Olivie year (aka 2022) with this one. I can’t wait for the next Witch Way anthology of hers to come out later this month!

Be prepared to reschedule everything you had planned...just to finish this collection.
All of the stories within this book were very different yet very captivating. The only downside to these stories is that I found myself wanting more.
You will not be able to put it down.

as another reviewer commented on, I think there is too much romance in this book. every single story has a straight female protagonist and it can get a little repetitive. it’s not like she can’t write queer couples/characters either- she has in most of her other books. my two favorite stories were definitely the second and the fourth. I think more magic and less romance could have improved this collection overall. I always love olivie’s writing so maybe I’m a bit biased and otherwise would have rated this lower.

loved it but also kind of hated it. every time i got really into the characters the story ended. i was frustrated by the fact that the female lead just kept falling for the guy she found annoying at first over and over and over again. i think i found 5 or so typos/words missing which made for awkward reading. mistakes happen but it didn’t feel like this had been proofread thoroughly.

Fun collection of magical romance stories. I loved the Avalon story in particular, probably because it reminded me of Percy Jackson.

3.75, I love this author's writing, and the stories were cool, I liked the witchy vibes and characters but I was not overly attached (understandable since this is a collection of short stories lol but I still wanted to read her stories)

3.5 overall. Almost all of these definitely suffered from insta-love. At least in Saints and Liars, they knew each other beforehand but even that seemed to progress far too rapidly. And in two of the stories, they had the other person think something along the lines of 'that was unusual for the other character' and in both cases it was like.... this is the third time you've interacted, you have no way of knowing what's usual for that person? Like, even the story forgot that these two people don't actually know each other that well. And in Pars Fortuna, like, she's interacted with Sam three times and is still like... I don't know, maybe it does make sense to tank my career ambitions for him? Just ew. None of the romantic pairings really hit right but at least I liked the couple in both Stone's Throw and The Golden Age of Monsters, but even in those you've got insta-love (even with the passage of time in The Golden Age of Monsters is still feels too quick). Zero percent surprised that the one lacking any romantic entanglement ended up my favorite: The Immortality Project. They're still well-written and engaging - I think I loved The Golden Age of Monsters because it had so many other characters populating it - but the romances here dragged all the rest of the good stuff down for me.

A lovely little collection of stories, even if they weren't all to my taste.

Stone’s Throw (5/5): Grief, madness, love and faeries. Far and away my favorite story in the collection. It reminded me of something Neil Gaiman would write and felt very much like it could have come out of the Sandman Universe.
Saints and Liars (3/5): Basically a Hallmark holiday romcom, except the main characters are witches. Although that ultimate doesn't matter much to the plotline.
The Golden Age of Monsters (3/5): Island getaway romcom with a sprinkle of Greek myth, featuring a less than convincing enemies to lovers trope.
Pars Fortuna (3.5/5): What if AOC was magically favored and fell in love with someone who had luck as bad as hers was good? Very corny but its originality made this a smidge more appealing.
The Immortality Project (2.5/5): I wanted to like it but there wasn't enough substance. And the way it was written made it a bit hard to follow.

4.5

I've always been more partial to Blake's short stories and these ones didn't disappoint.

I really liked the third story, and I thought it was going to be my favourite one, as I'm a big fan of "enemies" to lovers and I really enjoy reading about Greek mythology. Also, I can appreciate a bit of hopeful uncertainty in my endings.

Then I got to the fourth story which I absolutely loved. It is very short, simple, fun and quite adequate to the times with the elections just a month away. (Also Sam was swoon-worthy)

All of them were very entertaining and didn't take long to read.
