Grace Burrowes started writing as an antidote to empty nest and soon found it an antidote to life in general. She is the sixth out of seven children, raised in the rural surrounds of central Pennsylvania. Early in life she spent a lot of time reading romance novels and practicing the piano. Her first career was as a technical writer and editor in the Washington, DC, area, a busy job that nonetheless left enough time to read a lot of romance novels.

It also left enough time to grab a law degree through an evening program, produce Beloved Offspring (only one, but she is a lion), and eventually move to the lovely Maryland countryside.

While reading yet still more romance novels, Grace opened her own law practice, acquired a master's degree in Conflict Transformation (she had a teenage daughter by then) and started thinking about writing.... romance novels. This aim was realized when Beloved Offspring struck out into the Big World a few years ago. ("Mom, why doesn't anybody tell you being a grown-up is hard?")

Grace eventually got up the courage to start pitching her manuscripts to agents and editors. The query letter that resulted in "the call" started out: "I am the buffoon in the bar at the RWA retreat who could not keep her heroines straight, could not look you in the eye, and could not stop blushing--and if that doesn't narrow down the possibilities, your job is even harder than I thought." (The dear lady bought the book anyway.)

Oh, I wanted to like this book. There was promise in this book after our H/h played a supporting role in A Truly Perfect Gentleman. Emily Pepper is the industrialist heiress, out of step with the ton and fast developing feelings for Valarian, hero of this book and the definition of impecunious gentleman.

They start this book with a kiss, which, for Burrowes is lightning fast. There was an interesting set up to their courtship in the first 30% or so in which there was rather a role reversal. Emily is the managing lady of the manor, reading contracts and trying to protect her father’s business interests. She's not very good at being a lady & not very interested in being a lady. And Valarian is her dancing master and going to teach her a bit of that refinement she’s missing. In a stark contrast to her, he has no land to be managing (I mean, he has a bit: he is a Burrowes hero, after all - they never stray too far from Standard Regency Gentleman Stereotype), no money and few prospects beyond an unpublished manners manual. In so far as one can talk about ‘normal’ gender roles he’s got the characteristics traditionally associated with the heroine of a romance novel. There was nothing amazing about this first third, but I was diverted and intrigued to see where this reversal of roles might take us.

Then, it went off on a random frolic of its own. The characters grew inconsistent and tiresome. The romance sort of insta-loved, but without any of the enjoyment of an insta-lust before that. Emily went from being a determined young cit heiress to being a rather moan-y money focused creature not all that interested in her father’s business. Valerian is just there for the ride. A number of different strands of villainy from various secondary characters and a convoluted story involving Emily’s brother clog the back half of the book.

Boy oh boy: it is a proper, proper muddle.

Perhaps GB will keep churning books out at an obscene rate for as long as addicts like me keep buying them (capitalism! It works!), but I really wish she’d take a pause and have a think. She can write, she has a unique voice and this book, like so many of her recent books, has the bones of a good story, characters and romance. But she needs to take a second and third pass at her books. She needs to take the time to build on those elements and polish, polish, polish.

2 stars, juuuust.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and didn't want to put it down. This is Valerian's book (one of the many Dorning siblings), and it turns out that Valerian is greatly talented with the gifts of courtesy, listening and the ability to untangle thorny problems. He is a quietly strong, very likeable hero. His love interest is the daughter of a wealthy businessman who moved to the neighborhood not too long ago.

Emily Pepper's father hopes to have his daughter contract an advantageous marriage, preferably with a nobleman. Emily has had several seasons, where she was subject to the advice (and eye-wincing clothing choices) of her companion. Her father became ill and Emily is now residing with him at the country estate he bought near the Dorings. She is uneasy about her father's business since his illness. She is also uneasy at her new home for several reasons, struggling to fit into the neighborhood and naturally Valerian helps to ease her way. It was so refreshing to have a love story with no long drawn out epic misunderstandings. This couple *talked* with each other.

While I admired and liked Emily a lot, I thought Valerian really stood out in this book. It would be helpful to read at least two of the previous books in the series (A Truly Perfect Gentleman and A Lady of True Distinction). I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish.

Either Grace is getting older or I am or both, lol, but her style these days is appreciated. Upstanding men and their portrayal are most welcome.

Reading Burrowes always feels a bit like coming home. From previous novels where he makes cameo appearances I had an impression that Valerian was a bit of a dandy and not concerned with the deeper things. This novel dispels that quickly, and he shoots to the top as the Dorning to be most esteemed. The love story with Emily Pepper is lovely, but the requisite sources of conflict and how the conflicts get resolved are far less satisfying. When all comes to light, certain explanations and the central characters responses, especially where daddy Osgood Pepper is concerned, are hard to credit. The best moments in the novel are between Valerian and oldest brother Grey, Earl of Casriel, and how he reveals to Valerian his true worth in his family’s eyes, and through that, by extension his place in the world.

(Has anyone else noticed that the offspring of Burrowes’ heroes and heroines lean heavily to daughters? One has to worry for their future romantic prospects, as well as a few titles reverting to the crown.)

I enjoy the mix of intrigue with the romance, and the practicality of the leafs in this series is always pleasing. Loved Valerian most of all for his usefulness. Many a genre book relies upon secrets or misunderstandings keeping the leads apart, but Burrowes doesn't limit the idea to the leads only, and she addresses the awkwardness of telling truth under particularly challenging circumstances.
Despite all the conflicts, the mood remains light but not comic. If a book can have a gracious tone, then this one does.

After the first few chapters I was really bored. Maybe I just wasn't in a Grace Burrowes mood. For the first time ever I skipped to the last couple chapters of the book to finish it off. Honestly, I don't think I missed anything.

I LOVED the hero!! I think I've been trying to find a hero like this for several books now and it's wonderful to finally find him. I'll very much enjoy his 8(!) brothers books too if they're anything like him. I would have liked a bit more explicit loving at the end but honestly that's nitpicking.

Aside: This is the man I was expecting to read from Sarah MacLean when she very publicly scrapped her alphahole book in light of the Trump political climate, and said she had to write a different hero. I was expecting Valerian, and I'm exceedingly happy to have found him from Grace Burrows.

“To hell with kissing, Valerian wanted to belong to this woman, heart and hearth.”

Precious darling man.

(FYI, you had to have read the previous novel to get this couple’s backstory. Not necessary, but helpful.)

Every novel we’ve seen tends to downplay the siblings to make the main character look better, in the Windham series and in this one. But really, none of the other Dorning siblings bar Jacaranda and Grey draw annoyance from me. I found Ash, Will, Hawthorne, and Sycamore absolutely charming. Oak is a mystery but inoffensive. Smdh, I digress.

I feared my interest in Valerian from the previous novel would wane when he’s the main feature. Im sooooo glad he’s just as amazing in this one. He has such goodness in his heart.

As a jack of all trades, he’s the most relatable and overlooked Dorning by far. And, to my pleasant surprise, the threat is more sinister, creating an urgency in the plot that other Burrowes novels lack. And, unlike other Burrowes novels, the conclusion was wholly satisfying to read. I actually sighed in happiness at the end.

Grace Burrowes has a unique writing style which I always love even when I don’t love the plot or her characters. Having said that, this book is a problem for me to review.

The main characters and their love story were lovely. Valerian is that guy who does everything well but hasn’t identified his niche yet, which means he has no means. No coin. No clear plan for getting any. Unfortunately he has fallen tooth and toenail for an extremely wealthy heiress. Fortunately, Emily Pepper is an heiress with a brain and a backbone and decides that Valerian is all that she wants or needs in spite of his objections or anyone else’s. 5 stars for the romance.

So what’s the problem?

The fly in the soup is the big Pepper family drama and mystery about a theft that saw Emily’s brother convicted and transported and her family torn asunder. This was an underlying story thread that built up into a big denouement which, quite frankly, left me appalled and incensed. What a garbled, completely nonsensical, INSULTING resolution. 1 star for the dismal conclusion to the mystery

I landed on 3 stars but I’m not at all sure it shouldn’t be 1 or 2.

This is really a 2+ star book but not quite a 3 star for me. I thought this book did not do Valerian justice. He is such a nice person that he deserved a "fall hard" story not a "oh, I am going to ask her to marry me story".
Both are characters from a previous book but I do not really see any further character development. The skimpy "plot" was not really helpful to the story and I really did not care about it.
Emily is rich but it is trade money, not old money so she has not been in favor with the Ton. Moving to the countryside has been good for her father's health but he really does not need her. She is at loose ends and does nothing to fill her days. Valerian does not have any real money, but wait he does have a small estate. And this kind of story just did not do it for me.
Usually I really like Ms Burrowes' books but this one was not on the same par with others.

It’s Dorning brother Valerian’s turn. Valerian still lives on the family estate, keeping the books for the botanical business, advising his oldest brother Grey on magisterial matters, and solving problems in the neighborhood. When feisty heiress Miss Emily Pepper moves in nearby, there’s an instant attraction, but Valerian has no money of his own and doesn’t think it fair to live off a wife’s fortune.

Like any good Grace Burrowes novel, this was a gentle, sweet story. Her plots have some drama but I never fear for anyone’s safety. It’s like a mug of hot tea for the heart. There’s a mystery here, involving forgery and convicts and some serious conniving. But I had no doubt that things would come out right in the end. The Dorning family is lovely and well-meaning and kind to one another (but not boring). I enjoyed visiting them and I’ll look forward to Oak’s story next.

It's Valerian Dorning's turn for a story and it's a good one. Val is the honorable brother, the steady one who keeps the wilder younger siblings in check while supporting the rest of the family. He's the one who's stayed at home to keep things going. When he falls in love with heiress Emily Pepper, his honor doesn't permit him to court her as he doesn't want to look like a fortune hunter. Fortunately, Emily has other ideas.
Ms. Burrowes always writes a good romance, and Val and Emily are a perfect couple. They actually talk to each other and work out their problems together. It's a lovely story and a sweet romance. Emily has her own drama as her family has not been good at working out communication issues in the past, leading to a family tragedy, so it was nice to see how being honest with each other helped resolve the story.

A gentleman with strength of character

Valerian Dorning is overlooked by his father and often an afterthought of his many brothers. His strength and how he sees himself - a gentleman. He never veers from this. He solves conflicts of many types, makes several incomes and manages his life from this core belief. A powerful man from a character trait that could be construed as weak. Memorable. Emily, his heiress, has conflicts to be solved and a background lacking in understanding of aristocratic etiquette but not honor or resolve. What makes this book special is how Grace Burrows revolves the story consistently around a central character trait - that of a gentleman - and proves the intrinsic and often unrealized value of that in many scenarios. Romance may happen along the way...

it's been a while since I've read Grace Burrowes's book and unfortunately, it disappointed me. it started off great, with them sharing a kiss and a male lead that's actually a gentleman who tries to refuse it. then it kinda went downhill in chapter 2 because so many characters were appearing and i was confused who was who, my bad since i did not read the previous books in the series.

but still, too many supporting characters were appearing and taking over the hero's and heroine's romance development. i felt the writing was long-winded and i did not care much about the specific details on things other than the romance. stopped at chapter 4. this author's writing is just not for me.

Well written, this book pulls you in from the start. Valerian is such a gentleman, I could picture him and his mannerisms from the get go. I loved his non-judgmental attitude and his quiet way of getting things done with aplomb. Emily took a bit longer to figure out, but she was so open, especially with her feelings for Valerian. A good story with a bit of intrigue thrown in, grab a cup of tea and settle in for a delightful journey.

The romance was very sweet, but the Pepper family drama and Caleb, Tobias, and Briggs took up way too much time. Burrowes always has these side plots with (usually) her heroines, but this one felt like it was the main plot instead of the secondary one. I always appreciate sweet romances and honesty in romances and actually good heroes (I love Valerian) and not-stupid heroines (I love Emily) but there just wasn't enough focus on them for me.

Grace Burrowes is on my list of one of the fine authors of Historical Romance. This book is no exception. I chuckled and sometimes guffawed throughout as the dialogue between Valerian Dorning and Emily Pepper entertained completely. Naturally, the story had the H/h facing a few challenges and a bit of suspense but not so much that this took over the book nor my ability to enjoy the evolving love. Such a lovely read.

Valarian and Miss Emily Pepper

I think this is my favorite Dorning brother. So observant, kind, helpful, solution oriented and loyal, but somehow Valarian is always quietly in the background. Emily is likewise sharp mentally and a great match. There's a mystery involved which definitely needs Valarian's skills and threads through the story. But the issue with Emily's Father is a nasty betrayal which, for me recieved little resolution.

This is the eigth book in the True Gentleman series by Grace Burrowes and is my favorite so far. It is the story of Valerian Dorning and Amanda Pepper. He is the most handsome and charming of the brothers but has no career and no money while she is an heiress with a substantial fortune. She also has the stigma of having a father who is in trade. Following their love story is a wonderful experience.

I really enjoyed

I always enjoy my favorite authors, I'm well acquainted with their work. Grace Burrowes gave me a bit of a mystery with this romance. I think I that gave me a depth to the story I was searching for, very pleased to consider the possible culprits while enjoying the romance, cause there has to be romance. Yes I did pick the correct culprits...

Grace Burrowes delivers again

A new foray into the lives of the Dorning brothers is always a worthwhile exercise. This one is a gentle ramble through the foibles of ton vs the shop, city vs the country and rich vs poor, but the love story rings comfortably true as they each learn to understand their stengths.

I was glad that Valerian and Emily were able to successfully show others that their relationship was strong, no matter WHO tried to sabotage it. I really thought the thieves were Tobias and Caleb, even though they were not really trustworthy. What a shocker to find out the critical Veronica was the REAL culprit.

This story kept me on the edge of my seat!

I loved it, as I love all of Grace Burrowes's historical romances. She truly has a way with presenting the central conflict between the hero and heroine so as to make it seem insurmountable. I keep reading just to find out how they can overcome such intractable problems! I'm addicted to this series and this author. Brava!

This one was a little boring, honestly. The characters were a little inconsistent and shallow, though this still had the wonderful flow of a Burrowes book. The misunderstanding and villain was a little hard to swallow, particularly when there were little to no consequences for truly reprehensible actions.

Loved this book!

I liked everything about this book.
The characters seem like people you would love to know.
The plot is beyond measure!
It deserves comparing to that old saying,
"Oh the web weave when first we practice to decive."
Emily and Valerian were truly ment for each other!
Both of their familys are all good subjects for books!

Loved, Loved, Loved this book! We finally get to see Valerian Dorning get his HEA. Emily Pepper decides that Valerian is what she wants and she sets out to snag him and she does and I loved going on their journey with them. Can't wait for the next book in the series.
