Komugi’s not sure what to expect when her family moves to the remote northern island of Hokkaido, and she starts at a new high school. But she certainly didn’t expect a boy to come up to her and say, "Gee… you smell good, somehow!" That boy is Yu Ogami, and Komugi finds herself strangely drawn to him. But when she sees him in an unguarded moment, she discovers he’s a werewolf! Now she has a choice to make: to keep his secret, or to ask for help and risk angering a wolf-boy?
Am I the only one who got the vibes that Rin (mmc friend) is acting more like a protective friend of the fmc? I kinda think there's more of the childhood drama but I like how Komugi is upfront about her feelings and doesn't stay in denial.
"He's so close to me. But his heart is so far away."
This volume delves into the different characters and how Yu is only being especially kind to others in order to be treated well in return. Komugi breaks down when Yu says he can't return her feelings but to ease the pain in her heart, he'll do whatever she wants him to.
Then we have Fushimi, the tsundere guy who's been warning Komugi against falling for Yu from the start. But it seems as if he has to watch out for his own feelings towards her as he watches her have her heart broken over and over and over again by Yu.
Personally, I wish she would choose Fushimi but we all know he's fated to give us all Second Lead Syndrome....and he's an actual animal whereas Yu is half-animal, so either way it would be really weird if Fushimi was the end guy.
The second book is full of rejection and sadness...
"I fell in love with him, but he rejected me" "To have him so near physically, yet his heart is still so far." "But still, this feels worse than a normal rejection..." "I don't even come close to the edge of this heart. I can't understand it at all but... it's hurting me so much. "
The plot thickens and it makes me cringe to think that what I was hoping would be a short simple series might in fact grow into something more dramatic.
While I definitely enjoyed volume 2, I was hoping that the story might not turn too dramatic. It hasn't gone completely there (I'm looking at YOU, Boys Over Flowers), but there is the possibility that it could. And that worries me since I like my shoujo. Just not too shoujo-y, if that makes sense. A little drama can go a long way, but too much drama makes me tired far too easily, thus why I can't always finish TV series.
It was nice to see character development in our resident Fox ayakashi, Rin, as well as learn more about our adorable Wolf ayakashi, Yu, and the motivation behind his reaction at the end of volume 1. I'm also curious to know what sort of role Sensei Yata will play in the coming volumes (embarrassingly, I completely forgot his being mentioned in volume 1).
Considering her self-pitying behavior in this volume, I would like to see a bit more from Komugi next volume. There was a bit of selflessness on her part, but as is normal among teenage girls, it can be hard to think of others when the one you care about doesn't reciprocate. Especially when he wants to remain friends.
I continue to enjoy this series and just love how sweet Komugi is! She is so giving and considerate and just LOVE her why of wanting to stay friends with Yū! I think it is deeply admirable and makes me want to root for her, though my heart is breaking for her as we saw this volume progress. Her looking back the physical and matters of the heart moves me so much!
I really like the angle that Komugi is coming from (referring to her struggles and such) and think she is such a compelling heroine. I sympathize with her so much even though my background is very different from hers. But personality wise, I feel maybe we are really similar and maybe that's why I like her so much?
These guys are really fleshing out! Aoshi is one of my favorites because he's so cute! Yes, just getting to know everyone a little better has me excited!
Though Rin…
I'm not digging him. I feel most of this is his fault. ;P
I can't say my "prediction" for the opening of volume three because it would be a spoiler, but I better be wrong. LOL! (I did NOT like how things ended in this volume.)
Just let my ship sail, but let me ship be TRULY happy and see each other's hearts. <3 <3 <3
The second volume of this series can be summed as "Rin throwing wrenches into the budding relationship". Oogami and Komugi have decided to be only friends but Oogami is too sweet for his own good and Kogumi has hard time navigating the sea of feelings she's swimming in. And Rin trying to intimidate her to leaving them in every possible moment brings just more anxiety for her.
The focus is very much on following Kogumi on her emotional journey. And she's a nice protagonist, and I feel bad for her because she's not exactly happy during this volume at all. And Oogami doesn't realize his usual friendliness is a reason for it. Aww, what a mess! You can talk it through in the future, can't you? Komugi deserves happiness! But Rin is almost partly to blame for the situation. His actions are explained with "humans are untrustworthy and stupid" and wanting to protect their animal posse here but there are hints that's not really it. Or at least not all of it. So, even though he's frustrating here, I think we will understand him better in the next volumes.
Even though this volume was mostly Komugi agonizing over her feelings, there were a couple of tiny nice moments of her with her other school friends; good they aren't completely forgotten in the midst of boy-drama. And there were some hints about Komugi's family story which I'm eager to read more about.
This volume was slower than the first but the drama was compelling enough to keep me interested, and I like the characters. Nogiri's art and lines are very airy but look nice.
With Komugi Kusunoki's sudden and very surprising admittance of her feelings at the end of the last volume started this volume a little awkwardly but as Yū Ōgami requested they should probably forget that happened so everything is back to normal...too normal. Now basically friend-zoned Komugi continues to learn more about the mysterious boys so popular in her class even as each of them warms up to her in their own ways.
Being halfway through the series I can see why people feel this has a bit of a Fruits Basket feel to the series and I am looking forward to seeing how each of the characters ultimately finds love and friendship even though they come from different origins.
Story felt disjointed, and plot lagged. Serious pacing issues. Characters aren't developed enough to warrant remembering their names, and facts and backstory are thrown throughout the story feeling more like an info dump than a functioning part of the plot.
Also, odd note, but one of the two-page chapter pictures looked suspiciously similar to one in Vampire Knight of the Night Class, Zero, and Yuki. Like, to the point that the poses looked a little too similar.
These book are not my jam and I need to accept that. Maybe then I'll stop being so disappointed. I dont know maybe it's cultural or my immense ignorance but I'm not getting it. I dont like it but I've definitely read worse and it gets better as it goes along. Who am I kidding, I love the illustrations!
More of a 3.5 star rating; I was hoping this volume would be a bit of a happy one but then some drama happened towards the end. Also, I’m not sure if I’m overthinking it or not but did the last chapter hint at a love triangle??
