At the Savoy Hotel, in the aftermath of an attack on legendary detective Kendo Miyamoto, Lottie Grote finds herself the number one suspect in a potential muder investigation. There might be a way out, though, but only if she's willing to make a deal with the devil... Scotland Yard!
I got a beautiful variant cover which put me in a great mood for the somewhat overly-exposition-y but ultimately fun story inside. I miss Giant Days like nobody's business but Wicked Things is a good supplement I'm excited for the actual mystery solving to begin!
WICKED THINGS #2, available this Wednesday from Boom! Box brings us back to a favorite character, set in a world many fans love. We are, of course, talking about Lottie Grote and Giant Days. She has now grown up and begun a new series once
Lottie Grote may not be a character who made many appearances in Giant Days, but she quickly became a fan favorite. Which explains her multiple appearances throughout other series, including Bad Machinery and now Wicked Things.
Once upon a time, little Lottie was a teenage detective, a brilliant one at that. Now her friends have found other priorities in life, and Lottie herself is quickly aging out of the whole ‘teenage’ part of her reputation.
To make matter worse, Lottie has been framed for murder. That may seem like quite the jump to some people, but those people don’t solve mysteries for fun. Lottie can figure this out, she just needs some time to figure out how it all goes together.
I finally got back to a John Allison series, and I could not be happier (but I could be if it was a new Giant Days)! I decided the other day to finally pick up issue two of Wicked Things, which I am really enjoying! Issue One brought back a favorite character of mine and it’s been nice to spend more time with them, with some mystery thrown in. I believe there are six issues out currently and I really hope that John Allison continues to write more!
SPOILERS AHEAD
Lottie finds herself in jail after the incident at the hotel. She has tried to tell people she is innocent but people do not exactly believe her. Lottie is wondering how she is going to get out of jail and prove her innocence. Meanwhile, Lottie’s friend is trying to get more information and maybe remove some evidence of Lottie that would look very bad before the police find it.
I can not express how much I love Giant Days and John Allison’s work. If you are interested in more specific thoughts on Giant Days (I have a review of literally every issue but As Time Goes By and the holiday or special issues, I just literally have still not been able to bring myself to read As Time Goes By, I will forever hold out hope that John Allison writes more). Reading Wicked Things makes me so happy, I love my time with Lottie and the familiar art style! I am also really enjoying the mystery story. I am hoping there will be many many more issues of this series.
Like a potato chip- I couldn't read just one issue and ended up getting as far as I could with my Hoopla access.
In the second issue, Lottie is now in jail for the maiming of another elite detective, but clearly she was set up from the conniving, smartass detectives that are her competition. It's all the same shenanigans and humor as well as the seriousness of solving a crime and figuring out a way to get her out of jail.
Fashion-forward Lottie and all of the characters are so darn fun. Can I go out for a drink with them?
It’s picking up a little bit, and nice nod to Bad Machinery and the rest of Tackleford mystery gang. Hope we hear more about how they parted ways. Seems a bit silly of the Commissioner to engage a teen sleuth but I suppose it works for PLOT. C’mon, Lottie, use your sleuthing skills!

Ah, now we get to the meat of the conflict. I'm hoping that the story can sustain its premise without derailing the way Allison normally does. Maybe since this exists within the Giant Days universe he knows the characters better than usual?
