KELLY THOMPSON has a degree in Sequential Art from The Savannah College of Art & Design. Her love of comics and superheroes have compelled her since she first discovered them as a teenager. Currently living in Portland, Oregon with her boyfriend and the two brilliant cats that run their lives, you can find Kelly all over the Internet where she is generally well liked, except where she's detested.

Kelly has published two novels - THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING (2012) and STORYKILLER (2014) and the graphic novel HEART IN A BOX from Dark Horse Comics (2015). She's currently writing ROGUE & GAMBIT, HAWKEYE, and PHASMA for Marvel Comics and GHOSTBUSTERS for IDW. Other major credits include: A-Force, Captain Marvel & The Carol Corps, Jem and The Holograms, Misfits, Power Rangers Pink, and the creator-owned mini-series Mega Princess.

Kelly's ambitions are eclipsed only by her desire to exist entirely in pajamas. Fortunately pajamas and writers go hand in hand (most of the time). Please buy all her stuff so that she can buy (and wear) more pajamas.

The dialogue and characterization in this probably surpasses that of the 2016 movie. Kelly Thompson does a very solid job of writing the series. I can't say I cared much for Corin Howell's art though. It often looked sloppy and unfinished.

I love the continued universe and the characters. It seemed like a great continuation and well developed.

The Answer The Call Ghostbusters have a problem. There's a giant fear demon in the middle of New York, currently drawing terror from everyone in the city. Who ya gunna call? How about anyone else, because they're petrified too!

I was going to say it must be hard to build characters around the ATC 'Busters since they only had one movie, but the original Ghostbusters only had two (since the cartoons are canonically other universes), so that argument's out the window. Kelly Thompson does her best to take what we know about Patty, Erin, Holtzmann, and Abby and make them into more well-rounded characters, but she does fall back on the basic characteristics to keep the plot moving. Erin's the nerd, Abby's the Ray, Patty's the reader, and Holtzmann's insane (and Kevin's dumb) - if it wasn't so darn fun I'd have a bigger problem with it all, but as it is, I had a blast reading this.

The plot's fairly basic, as is the big teamwork Care Bear stare type ending. The villain of the piece isn't particularly well fleshed out - he scares people because it's fun? Who even knows. But again, the dialogue's so good, the jokes all land perfect 10s, and I had a big grin on my face the whole way through, so I'm calling this one a win overall.

The art's a little hit and miss. Corin Howell's close up panels are great, and she gets the comic timing for the jokes down to the line, but the bigger action sequences get a little sketchy and loose, with the colourist having to do a lot of work to pick out the details. There's good character acting, but maybe not so good in the actual ghostbusting.

This is probably a middle of the range Ghostbusters book. It's inoffensive and doesn't do anything drastically new with any of the characters or the set-up. On any other day I'd have given this a 2.5 or a 3 star rating and gotten on with it. But it was such fun from cover to cover that it gets a boost, even with all the flaws counting against it.

I don't know if Kelly Thompson and Corin Howell will do a second Ghostbusters series. I suspect that Erik Burnham and Dan Schoening will because they seem to enjoy doing these crossovers and the readers seem to enjoy them (I certainly do) based on Facebook discussions. Thompson is remarkably busy but I hope there is time in the future to revisit her version of the Ghostbusters.

Will reiterate how much this comic does with the characters and the situations MUCH more than what the movie did for them.
Here? Chris Hemsworth's EXTREME himbo energy is actually funny instead of distractingly bad.
Here? The neurotic tics of Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, when paired with some pretty hilarious lines, are actually funny.
Here? The evil entity's plot is actually menacing and not fueled by pettiness, giving our heroines some actual fear-inducing nightmares! GOOD STUFF!
IDW really knows how to take a beloved property and running well with it do they?

Meh.

The drawings are kinda cool, but I’m really not into comic books in general.

Holtzmann is more interesting in this one than in the crossover series.

I LOVED the 2016 Ghostbusters but making all the white ghostbusters Doctors and the only black one NOT has always really bothered me. I LOVE Patty though, I love her history knowledge. As a historian and not a scientist I think she's much cooler than the others. But SHE NEEDED TO BE A DOCTOR TOO! This comic made it worse TWICE it has all the characters in opening panels and everyone gets to be a doctor except the black woman. What kind of message does that send to kids? It's something that really needs to be addressed and wasn't.

It was a fun adventure, and Patty was awesome and smart. This book seemed to capture the ladies personalitites much more than the other one I read. The story was about a ghost who drew on your darkest fear, and how sharing your fears lessened them which was a nice message.

The team responds to a simple Class III ghost call that turns into a nightmare for them and the city. I was halfway through when I went online and bought myself a copy. This is DELIGHTFUL. I love Kelly Thompson. I loved this new adventure, and getting deeper into the characters. The art wasn't my favorite--Abby's odd hair style that looked like 70s sideburns made me twitch every time I looked at her, for just one example. Patty is so completely fantastic as their historian with much needed common sense, I loved Erin going to comfort Holtz, and I love how they solved the case. And Erin's confusion over how to bill it. Utterly delightful. I wish there was more!!

2023 EDIT:

Reread. A fun and very funny comic; even better than I remember.

Final Score: 3.5/5

Original Review:

A fun Ghostbusting adventure from these awesome ladies, that I'm glad exists. A bit simple, and kind of short on reaching its full potential, but it's funny and even touching. Female friendships and destiny forever!

A cool, cartoony comic. For fans of female heroes and scientists, as stars of their own stories.

Final Score: 3.5/5

Let's be clear: all I want is to see all four Ghostbusters being pals and being competent and having humorous, snappy dialogue, but especially I want Patty and Holtzmann to do that

And this book has all four Ghostbusters being pals and being competent and having humorous, snappy dialogue and has some great Patty and Holtzmann moments so I'm happy.

The team from the 2016 Ghostbusters return for another comic outing following their inclusion in the Ghostbusters 101 crossover event. Whilst we all know how the internet reacted to the newer version of the Ghostbusters the team itself was very entertaining, with some great quirks and character traits, all of which are further explored in Ghostbusters: Answer The Call.

After responding to a call at an old brownstone in New York City, the Ghostbusters find themselves going up against a spirit a lot more powerful than they were expecting, a Schreckgespenst, or Boogyman. The spirit is the ghost of a mad scientist called Dr Kruger who has found a way of invading people’s worst fears and trapping them in their nightmares (yes, the characters do address the fact that the ghost that invades dreams is called Kruger).

This nightmare invaision ability gives the story ample opportunity to explore the psyche of the characters, giving more insight into the characters than the actual film did. We learn about their insecurities, their past traumas, and in the case of Holtzman, what makes her so determined to be strange and different.

We also learn of an event in the past that connects all of the Ghostbusters to a time long before the events of the first film. Whether or not it means there was some kind of fate involved in the four of them coming together is left open, but it does add an extra layer to the characters then there was before.

Kruger seems to challenge our heroes in ways that the villain of the movie didn’t, he makes them doubt themselves, to lose faith in their abilities and even come close to giving up on being Ghostbusters altogether. The stakes feel bigger than anything that the team has faced before, and this makes it feel like a worthy follow-up. If this story was used for a sequel film it would make for a great second movie.

The story has some good action in it, as well as the deeper character beats, with some over the top moments that really are too silly but work brilliantly. The proton whip that can be used to drag spirits out of people they’ve possessed is a particularly cool and inventive device, though the ghost killing zamboni might be Holtzman going a bit too far, especially as it tears a hole in the roof.

Corin Howell’s art is great throughout, and is able to capture the likenesses of the characters and infuse them with energy. It’s not just the Ghostbusters that Howell makes pop on the page, his ghosts are particularly good, and whilst Dr Kruger looks good it’s his spooky ghost child that really steals the scene.

Ghostbusters: Answer The Call is a great follow up to both the original film and Ghostbusters 101. It manages to be full of action, character development, scares, excitement, and even some emotional depth. Whilst I found the film enjoyable it didn’t go too deep into the characters, and this book manages to make up for that. It may even appeal to some of the people who hated the film, though that’s perhaps asking too much.

I want to start off and say this was a very solid volume. I, of course, had my concerns with the all-female team movie being a bit of a let down. I felt Kelly Thompson's writing was very enjoyable and I did not initially anticipate for the series to be written by anyone else other than Burnham.

I certainly enjoyed each and every lady, including Kevin who is probably hands down my favorite character. Overall all the story and antagonist comparable well to Burnham's writing. Art is spot on and feels like there is hardly a deviation from Burnham's run.

Story was great. Ending was great. Overall jokes and funny moments were well placed. I more so wish I had not waited as long as I did to read these as individual issues.

Picking up a franchise and inserting a new crew is difficult, add goofy, lost, misogynistic skeptics, and the gig seems impossibly uphill.

The narrative was lukewarm at best, but its potential was very much presented in moments that actually felt unique. The story seems to be a patchwork of other stories, but the characters gave just enough of a different vibe to follow through and care what happens next to them. For a first attempt, it was worth anticipating a sophomore story.

The art was energetic and in constant motion. I could feel the static from the ion packs, wild, nuclear spaghetti beams in wonderful hues. Emotions were captured expertly and paired expertly with the ethos of the story.

Really entertaining story and successful continuation of the much maligned 2016 Ghostbusters story. As one of those poeple who liked the 2016 film, it was really great seeing these characters given a another chance at the spotlight and proving that they're a legitimate addition to the mythos and GB universe. I wish this could have had more nuanced character bits to flesh them out a bit more but, being a mini-series, it was pretty plot heavy and focused primarily on problem-solving and moving the story forward. I'd love to see an ongoing with Abby, Erin, Holtzman, and Patty to flesh them and their world out but if this is the only solo Answer The Call cast story we get, it was a fun ride.

A fun filled romp through the Ghostbusters’s nightmares. (Ghostbusters’s sounds really weird.) This Comic was really good - a solid 4 Stars. To be honest, i thought it was going to blow me away, especially with Kelly Thompson writing it. But it never hit the OMG! This is amazing! And we stayed at This is really good! Recommended.

Plus, it was fun to listen to both of the Ghostbusters soundtracks (2016 and 1984) while I read this.

Abby, Erin, Holtz, and Patty, assisted by Kevin, manage another adventure. A house-call turns really bad when they manage to release a Class VII ghost of a mad scientist who had experimented in terror. They had to delve back into their unknown shared past and trust Kevin with a proton pack to manage to contain dead mad scientist. A nicely paced adventure and a different alternate NYC.

This wasn't exactly the most complicated effort to continue a movie story as a comic book, but it's a fun enough venture. It's a solid one-shot adventure as far as a 5-issue mini-series can be. They have generally captured the unique traits of the different characters and really reduced Kevin to a brainless himbo but it all sort of works.

A delightful continuation of the recent Ghostbusters movie, following the women as they chase down an evil ghost that feeds on nightmares. Perfectly enjoyable, and Thompson’s writing captured the characters’ voices really well, but I couldn’t help but feel like something was lost in translation from the screen to the comic book page.

Much preferred this to the Everyone Answers the Call volume, which just didn't have enough time to cover the vast array of characters they mashed together. Tonally it hit the spot and I enjoyed the art, which was minimal but had recognizable characters with expressive faces and energy. Hope they'll continue this at some point.

I love me some Holtzmann so this was pretty enjoyable. There were a few panels with no background art which seemed weird. And it didn't love that . But on the whole I'm glad there's more of the Answer the Call universe.

A fun piece that gives a little bit of a Real Ghostbusters-type polish to the 2016 Answer the Call crew.
