Shikimori spends some quality time with her rival (?) Kamiya and finds that they have a lot more in common than just their attraction to Izumi. Could this be the start of a special friendship? With the culture fair now over, the time has come for the dreaded (to some) sports fair, and the whole gang has been assigned to the relay race team! Hachimitsu, whose interest in sports and all physical activities is nonexistent, faces a difficult dilemma. Her friends are passionate about competing to win, while she is passionate about not exerting herself in any way. Will the power of friendship overcome her deep distaste for running or, heaven forbid, practicing running?!

School sports festival!

The way Hachimitsu is drawn in comedic mode I think is supposed to make her look like a doll, but those rounded off arms just weird me out.

Anyhow, this story continues to be idyllic and charming. This is easy to recommend to readers who enjoy low-key school days stories.

Shikimori’s not just a cutie, but Hachimitsu really is just a lump. Our smiling pile of commentary has never really done much but opine on proceedings, so what will end up happening when she’s dragged into the class relay against her will?

Make no mistake, this volume is a nice, deep dive into the enigma that is Hachimitsu and expands her character without sacrificing the incredible weirdness she brings to the series (she literally has exactly one expression at all times; you could replace her with one of those inflatable thingies that flop around outside of car dealerships and nobody would notice).

Since he desperately doesn’t want to, Izumi is naturally chosen for the sports relay (given the quick flashback to his previous luck in the relay, I really would have liked to see that whirlwind that carried him off). Turns out Hachimitsu isn’t that excited either, but their friends hop on board to save the day.

This storyline is a very good examination of the strength of friendship and lending people a hand while not belittling them. It’s very clear that Hachimitsu and Izumi are going to be the problems (Izumi manages to outthink his own curse, however, in a great moment), so the team as a whole just has to plan around it.

It’s basically a pure tour de force for Hachimitsu, who finally has some emotions and finds herself caught up in trying not to let everybody down, without really getting the point that, as long as she’s trying, she’s not letting anybody down.

As far as sports tournaments go, this one is pretty good because it takes one event, focuses mostly on that, and uses it as the fulcrum to develop a side character into something even better. It knows what it’s doing. The gags in this one also work well - I love the Felix the Cat style joke about what Hachimitsu is able to fit under her shirt (this gets even more pronounced during the omake) and her reactions in general are always fun.

The surrounding material is of varying quality. There’s a big bonus manga focused on Kamiya and Nekozaki that’s actually pretty sweet and another story where the previous pairing and Shikimori all hang out. Kamiya is a great addition to the cast and seeing her integrated further is a welcome plus.

At the start of this volume Izumi is out sick, which leads to a fairly adorable reunion with Shikimori when he returns to school, but otherwise serves as a strange story between Inuzuka and Shikimori, where the latter is working through some weird brother issues with the former.

Despite a great guest appearance by Hachimitsu, this one doesn’t quite work the way I think the mangaka wants it to, although it seems to prod Inuzaka to get a bit closer to Shikimori in later chapters. Still, it’s quickly eclipsed by everything that comes after it.

4 stars - one kind of meh starter story aside, this one has some good laughs, but trades much more on heart and, honestly, the more time I spend with these characters, the more I’m coming to love them. And talk about your mean cliffhangers…

3.5/5 Volume 5 starts with Izumi out with a cold. This gives our girl group a chance to hang out with Kamiya. These were a few fun chapters away from Izumi who is kind of a cold fish.

After that the rest of the volume is a sports festival. We get some cute fun with Hatchimisu.

I am SO glad Hachimitsu got so much screen time this volume! She and Inuzaka are my fave side characters and both got to shine, but Hachimitsu's development was super relatable and cool. Izumi and Shikimori were amazing as well, but I'm glad that this volume focused more on the side characters, not only giving them time to shine but some backstory and development. While Kamiya is my least fave side character at the moment, her interactions with Nekozaki are cool and I love how Nekozaki's extrovertedness and open mindedness compliment Kamiya's more reserved and introverted personality. Nothing original, mind you, but it's done well and that's all that matters to me.

Another great volume, so mad at that cliffhanger, can't wait for the next volume.

Konnichiwa to all, readers 🌸

Today, I bring you the review of the fifth volume of the manga "Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie." Without further ado, let's get started:

💕 This installment begins with a hilarious situation that leaves Izumi out of action due to a cold. Through this device, the plot focuses on the bonds of friendship that unite the group, who find themselves in comical situations such as buying candy for the sick person or playing on a candy arcade machine.

However, the most significant moment occurs when Shikimori and Kamiya form a team in a basketball game against Kyô Nekozaki and a friend who also competed in the prefectural championship.

This confrontation on the court culminates in the strengthening of the friendship between the rivals.

💕 In the central chapters, after a sweet and curious reunion of the main couple, we move on to the organization of the sports festival. Through a draw, Izumi ends up teaming up with his partner, Yui, and Shu, with whom they will prepare for the relay race.

When the competition day arrives, we witness both Izumi and Inuzuka's defeat in the horse war and Yui's victory in the basketball shooting contest.

Finally, we come to the relay race, the main event of the volume, where the emotions range from comedic to the competitive fervor of the rival ladies.

💕 It is interesting to note that, this time, Izumi encounters a mishap when he loses his shoes halfway through the race; however, he surprises us by overcoming this and continuing until he passes the baton to Shikimori, who must make up for lost ground.

🌸 Conclusion: In this fifth volume, the narrative takes a captivating turn by delving into Shikimori's circle of friendships, first leaving Izumi on the sidelines and then exploring their affinities through sports.

Personally, I believe that the strengthening of the bond between Shikimori and her rival is the most notable aspect.

Rating: 5🌸

This was a hilarious volume!! Hachimitsu was front and center for a lot of it, and she is a hoot. Her character development from mostly apathetic/aloof to a melting, sweaty, tryhard member of the team made my heart so full ♡( ◡‿◡ ) And can we talk about the healthy female relationships please?!?!? I love that Shikimori and Nekozaki have taken Kamiya under their wing. The true friendship that is blossoming between Neko and Kamiya especially is really adorable.

That cliffhanger though...good thing I have volume 6 or I'd be in so much pain rn 。゚・ (>﹏<) ・゚。

There’s less of our love birds being cute together in Volume 5 of “Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie”, but a larger focus on the cast as a whole does offer a nice break and some other charming dynamics. Hachimitsu is an excellent and deeply relatable character (I also hate running with a passion and believe lying down in a cool room to be the height of hanging out). And a cliffhanger! Haven’t had one of those since Volume 1. Solid writing carries an unusual volume and makes me eager for the next one.

simple yet cute and fluffy romance comedy manga series in which Fdom is a must. it isn't your typical shoujo manga. it is a heartwarming love story which contains simple and nature of love between two characters and no complex drama. i haven't read up until the latest chapter, since my brother and i haven't bought the remaining books. all in all, it's a pretty good palate cleanser after a heavy story.

I love that we're getting more of the friendship dynamic in Izumi and Shikamori's group! And towards the end we get a lil bit more into Kamiya and Nekozaki's friendship and it's really sweet! The characters are really good in this manga and truly starting to shine as we get to know them and as the story develops. This volume highlights their sports festival where a coed relay race pushes them to the limits, mostly in good ways!

This volume was so cute! Hachimitsu is really funny and it was nice seeing her and Izumi practicing to perform better at the sports festival. It’s funny because Hachimitsu is not really into sports but she wants to help her friends win! When running the relay, Hachimitsu fell and scraped her knee but continued with tenacity and then Izumi did his best to not fall! Now Shikimori’s turn to run, she looks like she could help them win!

Time for the sports festival! Will everyone make it out alive???

Shikimori is her usual cool self. Her & Mr lucky grow closer. Hachi falls during the relay and gets hurt, and Izumi loses both his shoes running his section in the relay. Everyone gives it their all... but will it be enough? It's all up to Shikimori now!

There is some really great development for the side characters in this volume, which is always great to see!

These developments still don't take any time away from seeing how cool shikimori is as well as how much her and Izumi love each other, such a sweet series!

This volume was short on the romance but bursting with friendship between the characters, and I love it. Friendship is important, too, and I appreciate how this manga doesn’t shy away from that! Makes me feel all warm and content. 🥰

Probably my favorite volume so far as it has the least romance/thirst and focuses more on friendship and the non-romantic relationships with the side characters.

Me encantó este tomo, porque lo leí mientras estaba en una competencia de atletismo y el ambiente en que se desarrolla es similar. Amo cada vez más está obra.
