A Day in the Life of a Caveman, a Queen and Everything In Between: History As You've Never Seen It Before

Rate this book
A colourful and comical tour through history from cartoonists Mike Barfield and Jess Bradley.

The hilarious minds behind A Day in the Life of a Poo, a Gnu and You have teamed up once again – this time to give a taste of the daily lives of the people, animals and objects who made history.

Featuring a day in the life of early humans as they paint mammoths on the walls of a cave, a fierce gladiator battling in the Colosseum and the first woman in space. And not forgetting the animals of history – from an Egyptian cat (worshipped as a god, of course) to an albatross flying over Rapa Nui and a dog in the trenches of the First World War.

Readers can also discover the stories behind famous constructions, including the Great Wall of China and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, and delve into the secret diaries of a Viking, Isaac Newton’s cat and the wooden panel that became the Mona Lisa.

With over 90 entries told in the friendly, informative style of Mike Barfield and brought to life by Jess Bradley’s brilliantly funny illustrations, this book will have children learning and laughing as they go.

I loved A Day in the Life of a Caveman, a Queen and Everything In Between: History As You've Never Seen It Before! It is fun and educational. It also teaches students parts of history that may have been overlooked. It doesn't just cover lives of famous people (Queen Elizabeth, Plato, Christopher Columbus, and more) but also covers objects and animals that are part of history (Katherine Johnson's stick of chalk, an albatross on Easter Island, the printing press, the wooden board that became the Mona Lisa, and even the sheep who gives his skin for the Magna Carta).

Perfect way for kids to get an overview of history!

I appreciate what this book was trying to do, but I was clearly not its intended audience. I think for someone who likes a little history, a lot of pictures, and some really corny jokes, this book could be a great match. My only worry is that some of the jokes are presented in ways that people might not understand they're jokes. If you didn't know anything about history, you might think some of the jokes are true. That said, I did giggle out loud a couple of times. Good middle school humor.

Maybe not as good as the first one (A Day in the Life of a Poo, a Gnu, and You) but only because I think there were a few jokes that I don't think children will get.

*I received a free copy of this book with thanks to the authors, Buster Books and Kelly Lacey of Love Books Tours. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*

In comic book style, with bright pictures and dialogue bubbles, this history book is perfect for kids to learn without even realising that their entertainment is educational!

The ‘day in the life of’ hook is a clever one that isn’t only restricted to people (a caveman, a queen, an astronomer) but also features animals, plants and inanimate objects (an Egyptian cat, a dead sheep, a tulip, a bacteria, a wheel, a flask of soup, the letter ‘v’). We all loved the clever way that certain items were used to illustrate big moment in history for a different and interesting historical perspective, for example, ‘A night in the life of a star’ leads to information about Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad.

The information is organised chronologically, rather than geographically, and spans the entire globe. We found it quite exciting to leap about from Russia to China, to Italy and back again within the space of a few ‘days’ and the map at the front of the book proved an invaluable resource for placing ourselves as we travelled about.

The book starts with homo erectus and the neanderthals in Ancient History, and wends its way through the Middle Ages and Modern Times, to end with smart phones, carbon atoms and a glimpse into the future. Finally, there is a handy glossary of terms at the end, for reference as you’re reading.

I was reminded somewhat of the Horrible Histories series, in terms of the fun factor and presentation, but the contents are less… well… horrible! Which suits Minishine better, as she is a bit of a delicate soul.

Minishine’s thoughts (aged 8): This book has funny pictures and funny, historical words. It tells you all about what happened in the past, but only the interesting bits. I like the parts that have animals in, because I love animals and like learning more about them. I think you should buy it if you like learning about history and all kinds of different stuff. I never knew that Catherine the Great’s real name wasn’t even Catherine at all!

Babybows’ thoughts (aged 5): I liked it when the caveman hit his thumb with the axe – that was funny! The pictures are really good, ‘cos all of their belly buttons are crosses. I want to know more about how Calico Jack got captured, so me and Mummy are going to look it up. I want to look up all the cool fighty-fighty stuff!

Every school needs a load of copies of this book – they are ideal for school project resources, or just for some entertaining private reading for 8+ year olds. Home educators – or youngsters who just have a general interest in history and the world around us – will find it invaluable too!

'If you’ve ever wanted to know how the first wheel was invented, what life was like for a house in Pompeii and what a Galápagos tortoise thought of Charles Darwin, then look no further.'

As well as the love of reading, I also seem to have passed on my love of history to the Mini Bookworm. He is 8 and I often find myself digging him out of a pile of "Horrible Histories" books just to tuck him in at night!

So when I saw the cover and concept of "A Day in the Life of a Caveman, a Queen and Everything Inbetween", requesting a spot on the book tour was a no brainer.

This GORGEOUS book takes the concept of the illustrations within HH books and totally runs with it. The comic book style really spoke to the mini bookworm and really kept him engaged for a long period of time. In fact, when I asked him if he had any negative points for this review he thought for a very long time before finally saying "it just wasn't long enough".

The topics are presented in one page snippets - it's not going to teach your kids all about one particular subject but, in my opinion, it is going to get them excited to learn more.

As a parent, I also really appreciated the progression of the topics into modern history. The civil rights page initiated a whole conversation about segregation and racism for example! Similarly, fossil fuels and global warming are factors that greatly affect our youngsters, but are presented in a really fun way.

Thank you to Mike Barfield and Jess Bradley for creating this wonderful book, and to Love Books Tours for giving the Mini Bookworm and I the opportunity to review it. As we live in the same county as Mike Barfield the Mini Bookworm did initially want to find him to be his friend, but apparently will settle for adding "A Day in the Life of a Poo, a Gnu and You" to his Christmas list!

Want to know about lots of different periods of history, told in a funny and informative way? Well this is the book for you. A follow up to A Day in the Life of a Poo, Gnu and You. This book starts with a day in the life of Homo Erectus and ends with a look to the future. Split into three sections, Ancient History, The Middle Ages and The Modern Age this book is easy to dip in and out of. We look at some characters you expect in a history book such as an Egyptian Pharaoh, a Viking and a Queen but also ones that will make kids laugh at the titles, like A Stick of Chalk -talking about life with Katherine Johnson. A Severed Head - taking part in the French Revolution and A Dead Sheep who's skin was used to write the Magna Carta on.

The book is made up of brilliantly illustrated comic book style pages that tell us about the day in the life. Secret Diary entries, newsflash and bigger picture, all that explains topics in slightly more detail and in more depth. Even though it covers so much history it doesn't shy away from the tougher topics, talking about why 'discovering' countries wasn't great for the people already living there (plus how can you discover a place where people already live) and how white settlers killed many people by bringing diseases and claiming land as their own.
Emmy loved this book, once she finished it the first time she started reading it from the beginning again. She's definitely learnt from it too as yesterday was linking what she had read in this book to another book she was reading.
👧 This book is so funny I can't even choose which page is the funniest. The comic strip pages are my favourite and so are the diary pages.

This was a gifted copy in exchange for a review.

We received a free copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review. A big thank you to Mike Barfield and Jess Bradley, Buster Books and Kelly Lacey of Love Books Tours for welcoming me onto the tour.

We really loved this book, it is set out in the style of a vibrant comic book - a big plus for my boy, who is a reluctant reader, but likes his comics and graphic novels. This structure allows youngsters to learn, whilst having fun and being entertained. It is also reminiscent of the ‘Horrible Histories’ books - another firm favourite of youngsters and the youngster in my house.

The glossary of terms at the back of the book is really useful and very accessible for young readers building up their confidence in reading.

There’s something to engage everyone - Ethan particularly liked the bits about animals because he’s a big animal lover. He loved the bright colour and comic style.

This is a book that should be in every school’s library - young learners will find this an invaluable read! It takes a look at the people, animals and objects that made history.

I recommend grabbing a copy today!

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A CAVEMAN, A QUEEN AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN.
This gloriously glossy book is crammed full of facts, humour and brilliant illustrations.

We are taken on a journey from Ancient History and The Middle Ages through to Modern Times. Important characters from history pop up, as well as voices given to those people who are less talked about.

One of the things we enjoyed the most about this book was the unique story telling though the day in the life of some inanimate objects, pieces of wood and even a stick of chalk tell us about their role in making history.

A Woolly Mammoth, An Egyptian Cat and even a Severed Head help weave together the threads of time in such an engaging, humorous and educational way.

This book provides a resource to have some great discussions and doesn’t shy away from the darker moments in history and important topics like the Civil Rights Movement.

This comic style book uses fantastic and colourful illustrations paired with pleasing to the eye text. Detailed diagrams, news flashes, maps and secret diaries really help to make all the important facts and figures easily digestible and a pleasure to read.

This is a beautiful history book for children, and even adults alike. The illustrations make it such an interesting read, especially for kids.

The book doesn't only talk about a Caveman (homo eructus and our ancient history) and a queen, but it also talks about other historical events as well, like Mona Lisa's painting, animals, cultures and literally everything in between.

We start from the ancient history, and move slowly towards the events of middle timeline, and then move on towards the modern times. I love how organised the information was.

Not ashamed to say I learnt a few things myself. It's been a long time since we read all this and this book was a great reminder of all the historic facts.

There are loads of maps and diagrams that help teach your little one the geographical areas as well. The way the information is passed on, isn't limited to just simple illustrations, but it also has a funny edge to it which makes it much more fun to read.

I'd say its a perfect book for children (and even adults) and has an entertaining way of learning to it.

Me and my daughter absolutely loved this, mainly as I used it as an experiment to what she did and didn’t know. It took us both on an adventure through history as we explored everything from wooly mammoths to vikings to Civil rights. It was absolutely brilliant.

The illustrations throughout make it fun and engaging for everyone and of course the book has a map. Love a map. The book is laid out in a comic style way which is funny, knowledgable and most definitely enthusiastic.

There’s plenty of information launched at you that you increase your knowledge or are put wrong by your 12 year old. I’m most definitely going to share this with my 8 year old too. For me the glossary at the back was great because when my daughter wasn’t sure of a huge word we checked it out at the back.

This is a big read but a child but one they can stop and start work with alongside school and maybe even go all the way to be one step ahead of their teachers. Loved it.

I just thoroughly enjoyed every inch of this. I came across it unexpectedly and was caught by the sparky illustrations and the premise: this is literally a day in the life of everything in between. And it really delivers on its promise - it features a day in the life of a severed head (busier than you'd think), a ship's cat, a white flower, a sandstone block, and it's just such, such sparky fun throughout. I really enjoyed the breadth of history and the wide, global focus - it goes every across the globe and takes us from homo erectus through to Amelia Earhart's flask of soup. I mean, what is not delightful about that approach?

(I also thought this would be particularly productive for home educators; there's so much to push readers into other topics and things to explore. Such good stuff!).

As a teacher and the History lead at school I was so excited to be a part of this tour 🤓 This book went down so well at school! The Year 3 teachers I showed it to loved it and one of them went out and picked up the first installment (pictured on the left)
It's a great, accessible book for a range of history topics that would particularly appeal to boys or reluctant readers. The comics are colourfully and simply illustrated and they all contain important facts without being too overbearing. Discussing this with teaching friends, we decided it would be ideal to have in the class library at Year 2 and Year 3, but older children could definitely still enjoy this. Very handy for recapping key facts, events and people.
A strong recommend for this one!

This is a hilarious history/ informational book for curious minds. It might be targeted for children, but adult readers can expand their general culture with the abundance of facts from it. It's a great way to get children to read. The comic book style is catchy and amusing. They can learn about mapmakers, prehistorical people, knights, various types of objects and locations, and a lot more figures that you would not even think to read about. Highly recommended to parents and teachers looking to spark the children's interest in reading and history.

Nonfiction graphic genre. What an unusual book to span world history with a comic strip humorous approach. I wish I had this book when I was in college taking anthropology or world literature as there are distinctions made about culture and archeology (e.g. Homo Erectus versus Neanderthal) that are magnified and simplified. While there's too much to history and science to cover in 127 much more is covered in here than I expected.

Adults and teens would enjoy reading this. I think younger children would like this, but there are some terms and concepts that might be easier understood by older children. I have to say I have read this twice as its enjoyable.

Kudos to Mr. Barfield, the author, and Jess Bradley, the illustrator!

Oh wow....this book is so good ! It might be aimed at children but there is do much to learn in it that any age can read it and learn from it. With beautiful illustrations and amazing facts there isn't much this book doesn't have !

I love how the book goes through the different eras and finds exciting ways to tell you facts about what it was like then , what was invented and who was around. It did remind me of horrible histories with the fun ways to learn facts. The illustrations throughout the book were perfect , they totally complimented the book and made it even move special. If you are looking for a fun book where kids can learn at same time without realising then this is the one!

This is a fantastic read for children and adults alike. It's set as comic strips which my son thinks is brilliant fun.,1 or 2 pages maximum for each event it describes so its short, snappy and grabs your attention telling you the key points and not overwhelming you with information.
The illustrations are superb and really help capture the essence of the time being described.
I really loved the variety of stories throughout and think this is a great way to engage people in a bit of history!
My son is 11 and is really enjoying it now too.

This is such a beautiful children’s book. It is packed full with information, each time I open it I spot something new. When I looked at this with my nephew he loved it, the illustrations are so colourful and the information within isn’t too overloading. The book covers so many different historical events, I love the content page at the front it’s been very handy when we wanted to find out about one particular event or person. Although this book is aimed at children, it is also fun for adults too.

As someone who doesn’t know a lot about history, this book is brilliant! It’s not just useful for children but I think all ages will appreciate the comic book style of A Day in the Life of a Caveman.

BUT…it’s not just about Cavemen. Oh no! It’s about the history of everything that came after! Kings, Queens, animals, plants and artefacts that are important in World History.

This is the kind of book that helps you learn without you even realising. The brilliant and bright illustrations engage you and draw you in to what you are reading. There’s funny bits, diaries and key facts that keep your attention throughout.

The book is organised in date order, so you get history from all over the world at once and you can see how the world evolved over time to be what we know it today. Adam and I enjoyed using the map in the book to find the places that we were reading about. This added component really helped us picture where these historical events were taking place.

I’d definitely recommend this engaging book if you’re looking for something that little bit different!

This was a fantastic history book for children. Informative, engaging and fun this cartoon comic style book was quirky and fun yet teaches children about important moments in history.

I loved that moments in history were told from the point of view of different characters and sometimes inanimate objects! It kept the facts engaging for children and I learnt new things too!

What a brilliant book! I love how this made history come alive for the children. The way it is presented makes it exciting and accessible for children. At school we are looking at the Stone Age so I shared a bit of it. Their reaction was fantastic and they asked if we could just do our topics based on the book 🤣 the mammoth part was particularly popular! I would recommend this for parents and teachers for primary children…they will love it!

This is such an informative and colourful cartoon style book set in three segments: Ancient History, the Middle Ages and the Modern Age.

Written by Mike and illustrated by Jess, it brings history to life but with a light touch feel, making it accessible for most readers.

It’s target audience is 9-11 year olds, but I think most many would enjoy this bitesize book about cavemen, a queen and everything in between.

If you like horrible histories, you will love this book.

This book is the epitome of doing what it says on the tin... The strap line says "History as you've never seen it before" and it's certainly true for me.

It's a colourful, bright, fun way to look through history and learn things in a way you won't have in school. It's not a book I could read cover to cover but I have really enjoyed dipping in and out and finding new things to find out and news ways to look at things.

The illustrations are fantastic and really blend well with the way it is written. It's a book I will be putting away for my kids for when they are older and learning these things through THEIR school lives

Really enjoyable and fun graphic book going through history. My only caveats are jokes that about things the people had no knowledge of, for example saying the Queen Elizabeth I had bad teeth and mentioning her love of sugar. The Queen had no idea sugar rotted teeth and was told by doctors to take it because it helped teeth.

History of the world in three parts (Ancient History, The Middle Ages, and The Modern Age) told in graphic novel format. Might serve as an entree to history and nonfiction books. American students might be a little stumped by UK spelling, jargon (boffin), and metric measurements.
