This is the BEST of the series so far - the story is much more fleshed out, there is more of a mystery and MUCH to be learned by the newest additions, the "little police", and I think the illustrations were also some of the best. I really loved this one and wish I had littles to share it with and will be recommending this series to all that I know with littles. It has been such a joy to read them!

I've enjoyed all the stories in the Detective Gordon series, partly because the books capture the innocence, aspirations, and hopefulness of youth and the world-weariness of age and experience, but also because the book's messages are so delicately delivered. In this title, Chief Detective Gordon is inspired by the curiosity of two youngsters, a baby mouse and a baby toad, to start a small police academy. He teaches them the basics of police work, which partly involves choosing the right cakes for snacking, and then allows them to sleep over. When Detective Gordon starts sharing a dream about his mother, it triggers something in Buffy, and she realizes that she has no idea where her mother actually is. This marks the start of an investigation on the part of the elderly toad and the efficient mouse and their two young charges, and the follow the clues that they have even though the trail is old. Their encounter with the fox and the resolution of the story of Buffy's mother's whereabouts are both satisfying. KLA-DUNK! And as always, there's cake. Life is always better with cake. The colorful illustrations add just the right touch to this book, which is an excellent read aloud choice for second or third graders. It is fun to try to predict just what might happen when the police force heads out on this case. The author even manages to elicit some sympathy for the fox who, after all, has to eat.

Well, I highly recommend this for book for independent readers. There is some excellent messaging, adventure, mystery, some math, some new vocabulary. There is humor. Now, I did not realize that I read this out of order and if you ever read any of my other middle grade reviews(or any of my reviews) I generally do not read series. I may have when I was young but there are just too many books to be read and I like to give as many authors a chance to be read that I can. I am making an exception in this case. I finished this book but no where on the cover does it say book 4. I have requested the first three from the library. I am curious to see how the whole series got started and if you need to read the series or not. I will get back to you on that.

There is a lot of wisdom if you care to find it in this little book. Caring for others is important. Stoping to think and wonder helps you solve problems. Acting with kindness matters - and apologizing when you've made a mistake helps immensely. There's also cake. This is a sweet series that I need to book talk this week.

I read this series to my 5 year old son and he loved them. He's very sad that this is the last book in the series, and said I need to continue the story from right where this one ended for his nighttime story. His favorite was the stamp, everytime it came up he'd jump and say KLA-DUNK.... Oh and Sune's cute little booty on the back cover. I hope one day Mr. Nilsson will write some more.

This would have made a good final story. In many ways it's not quite as strong as the others, but it does wrap things up and make them ready for the future. But... the author added #5, A Case with a Bang, and I'm looking forward to it.

Detective Gordon and Buffy are back with a case that hits close to home: the mystery of Buffy's mother's disappearance. This gentle mystery features woodland animals, police school for aspiring detectives, and lots of cakes to reward good work. Serious drama occurs as the detectives wonder whether Buffy's mother was eaten by the fox. Whether young or old, the characters go about their investigations with a childlike intensity, which includes emotion, humor and wonder. Profusely illustrated with charming depictions of the animal, in misty pastel colors.
