Based on the wildly popular webcomic, One of Those Days chronicles the life and love of Yehuda and Maya Devir as they take on the minutiae of marriage, the ups and downs of daily life, and the paradigm shift of new parenthood.
Yehuda and Maya Devir began illustrating their life in comics when they moved into their first apartment together in Tel Aviv as newlyweds. In the years since, One of Those Days has become one of the biggest webcomics on the Internet, with millions of followers around the world. Yehuda Devir grew up on superhero comic books, and the Devirs' visual style is downright kinetic and bursting with life.
In this collection--the first time that the Devirs' comics have been compiled in one volume--they share stories that are heartwarming, hilarious, and universally recognizable. So even for those who don't feel like pulling out an assault rifle to wage war on a kitchen cockroach, the Devirs' challenges and triumphs are instantly familiar to anyone who's had one of those days.
I have seen advertisements for this comic on Facebook for seemingly forever. Non-stop "This comics truly shows married life" or "Laugh at your own relationship" or various other little clickbait taglines trying to get me to look (and I noticed last time I saw one that it doesn't even link to the artist's own website, so I assume it's one of those multiple page articles like those ranking sites). I have a personal policy that if Facebook is trying to shove it down my throat, I want nothing to do with it on general principle.
My wife has no such issues.
So, one day I hear her cracking up and see her staring at her phone. "You've got to see this" and shows me the very comic I've been refusing to read because of my Facebook policy.
And damn it, it's really funny.
As many have said, it is very relatable. It does show a side to relationships in a comical manner that do make me smile. I do see much of my own life in it. It's charming, it's funny and it's a relaxing stress free comic (which despite the fact that I read a ton of horror and suspense novels, I do occasionally need). If I had one complaint it's that there's not a lot of comics for the price tag they're asking… on the other hand, it's an attractive hardcover and I can't say I regret buying it in the slightest. 4/5 stars.
For the record, my facebook policy remains in effect, but I'm glad I discovered this one.
I discovered Yehuda Devir's work a few years ago and fell in love with the hilarious every-day scenes he drew. Many of the things his comics depict are spot-on for me, too, and I loved the frankness about his relationship with his now-wife.
We therefore get household "conflicts", hilarious differences between men and women and witness the stress of them moving (and not having internet at first) - we've all been there and done that. But then we also get the couple's struggle to get pregnant, the elation when it finally works and the adventure that is parenthood with all the hilariousness THAT brings with it.
The comics are cute, colourful and funny - fitting with what they are showing. Here are some examples from throughout the years and books:
I love the kind of geeks these two are and the outlook they must have on life (which also allowed them to create these single-panel comics). Naturally, darker topics are also addressed but always in a heartfelt way that is still hopeful / life-affirming.
So far, there are 4 volumes, available to view online or buy either as an ebook or print version. I opted for the online solution.
"One of Those Days" is a single-panel slice-of-life web comic taken from the life of Israeli artists Yehuda and Maya Devir. They've always raised a grin and been must-shares when I come across them online, and I love having this attractive hardbound collection to leaf through.
I don’t normally read graphic novels but I couldn’t resist this one and I so glad I gave it a try! This was hilarious and relatable and the art was just stunning. It’s definitely one I spent some time with, just appreciating the detail in the pictures and I know I’ll be flipping through it again and again. If you’re married this will crack you up and if you have kids you’ll relate to the transition from kid free to new parenthood.
Fairly typical one-page gags about newlyweds and marriage get an energetic boost from being drawn with the cheesecake and dynamic sensibilities of superhero comic book covers. Israelis Yehuda and Maya Devir come off as a fun and sexy couple into superhero and action movies. (Marvel may be sending them a letter soon about the repeated use of a little Hulk doll throughout the book.)
One of my favorite webcomics is collected in this beautiful hard cover. The art is larger than my phone and beautiful. Yehuda and Maya Devir bring their special view of life to the page and everyone is better off because they do. These comics can be a little cheesy at times but that makes them all better. The Devir’s open themselves up to the world and share a little sliver of what it’s like to be with them.
I read a lot of comics about relationships and they usually go super cute art, this comic goes for superhero style art. The Devir’s aren’t trying to land cute jokes that make you go ahhh like most relationship comics. They’re are opening up to personal moments that are unique to them but many couple can relate too.
If you’re looking for a book that’s fun and full of being art this is your comic. This comic will make you smile and laugh. It’ll make you wish more comics were like this and you would be right. It’s that fun to read.
I have heard about this comic and duo for a while and once I came upon this collection I knew I had to have it. I am so glad I did as not only are the comics charming especially with the details, the realism behind them is lovely. I highly recommend this comic especially for people in relationships or with families.
Each comic is beautiful and so relatable, but this felt more cash grabby then i would have liked. Especially since every page had one side with the comic sketch and no text the other in full color with text.
A funny and endearing look at a couple's life from dating, cohabitating, proposal, marriage to baby makes three. Very sweet. Some of these things are hysterical and very universal. WHY MAKE WARM IF NO WANT SNUGGLE?!
Love their love story and comics, but disappointed that the book had 3/4 full of the same comic, unfinished , then finished. A few times would have been cute, but not most of the book
Cute but familiar one page comics about relationships. Where the rating takes a hit is that this is a $30 hardcover where half the pages are uncolored versions of the same comics.
I bought this on a whim without having ever heard of the authors or seeing their work on social media.
My feelings on this were lukewarm for much of the book. I couldn't *quite* identify with the relationship depicted. My days of strutting around naked are long past and my body was never quite that rockin' (and by not quite I mean not even close). The art is REALLY good, but the characters having the bodies of superheroes made it hard for me to connect to something that was supposed to depict "real life."
And yet every now and then there would be a panel that struck so close to home and was so tender that it almost stung.
The last quarter of the book is when it started to feel more real for me - pregnancy and a new baby. There is one page in particular that completely suckered me in, 116: That Touch. Besides being a moving page in general, it shows the post-baby body complete with little stretch marks. The acknowledgement of the changed body after kids being it's own beautiful thing (and simultaneously a source of so much insecurity) was as real as it gets.
I took a peek at some more of their work and definitely identify with the more recent work as opposed to the beginning of this book, but I still think it's great work. The art is definitely my cup of tea - bright and detailed and capable of showing a huge range of emotions.
Also watched a couple videos. They are A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E.
I forgot to write a rewiew In a few words this wasn't written for me. who was it written for? : married people between the ages of 35 and 50, who like looking at facebook's "relatable" content. The artstyle is cute but i don't think this was worth the money (for me)
This comic was the most heartwarming thing I have ever read. It was so simple and the drawings were so beautiful. I can’t think of anything more to say except that I want more.
I love the titles, the artwork, and the story so much! I don't quite understand why they include the black and white and the color versions though. I would have been happy with just the colored ones. That aside, this is a wonderful collection, and I look forward to the next one!
I've seen some of these online, and I love the art style as well as how absolutely adorable this couple seems. Relationship goals, to be sure. Despite the large size of the book, there really aren't that many comics inside, and they're almost entirely all one-page illustrations. Worth a read, but definitely not something I will ever need to purchase for myself.
Love the artwork. The single panel chapter style was not as captivating unfortunately. The stories are just commonplace. I was hoping for more personal stories and that wasn’t there; it was a letdown. Also, too fat and heavy a book; it increases the cost of the book. I really do like the artists and their work and want them to succeed. Best wishes for their next work.
This is so lovely! The art is gorgeous, and the slice of life style storytelling is absolutely perfect. I laughed while I read, and ended with a huge smile on my face. I definitely recommend if you need something uplifting in your life.
Like many others, I discovered the comics first through the Internet and I actually enjoy them. They are funny, at times relateable and at times just a bit sexy which gives them nice touch of flavor. And I recommend checking them out, if you haven't already stumbled upon them on your own!
The rating is solely based on the physical book which is atrocious. It's a massive hardcover book which covers almost 300 pages and can go for 30€. And Jesus H. Christ if all that isn't full of nothing.
As far as I know, it does not have any new artwork or work that can't be found on the Internet. And sure, while this isn't too abnormal, many other Internet strips are collected this way, this is on an entirely new level as half of the pages are just the same artwork before coloring. Not pencil sketches, different poses, in-progress ruminations, no. Just the same artwork before coloring, two massive pages repeated again and again. While... I don't know, distantly intriguing?, I did glance at them at the start but as soon as I realized how they did not just add little to no value, they actively took away from the full picture, I began to ignore the left-side of this tome of a collection.
So, ultimately half of the book could be cut and nothing would be lost except the idea of value when presented with a shorter book. Or, they could have literally anything else that would present something new instead. Have different in-progress sketches, have stories or even real-life photos like the artists have shared on social media already before. Create a narrative, show yourself posing as they are, laugh and expand the story. Alas, none of this is here.
This alone made me quite actively dislike the concept of this collection, but as I loaned it from my local library without having paid anything, the most disappointing thing became the fact that I thought less of Devir's art when read this way. The "narrative" is not really here and I thought the mega-sized pages exposed some of the minor flaws that I had never considered in the posts I had seen before. In this way, I received even less than I had received before.
All of this is extremely disappointing as I got extremely excited to fully immerse myself in this artwork and world. Now, I can't really recommend it to anyone, especially if you pay for it and if you got to loan it, it's too heavy for its own sake to be carried around.
