Until she realizes just who he is. And why he is there.

The rest of her life is a long time to be without pleasure.
Attending the Whitwell’s ball, James Tennison, Earl of Battling, recognizes the lady in the Grecian Goddess disguise. How could he not? One Enchanted Evening by Anna Harrington Mason Granger is a victim of proximity. Although the wealthy businessman spurns all society events, his townhouse sits next to Lord and Lady Whitwell’s, which means he’...
This glittering collection of short stories is an absolute must-read for fans of Regency romances. Set in 1814 at an extravagant masquerade ball, each couple's story is impacted by this ball in some respect. Each of the fifteen stories is a self-contained romance with HEAs for all, with some of them connected to other series by their authors.
The overall cohesiveness of so many different stories was impressive, indeed. Quite a few of the selections contained references to people and events that were also detailed in other books, evidencing an astounding level of synchronicity for fifteen different authors to achieve. There were no inconsistencies or contradictory scenes, which is a feat in itself when you figure there are well over a hundred different characters throughout who attended the same ball at the same time.
Beyond the technical expertise, the stories are each very well done, short but well-written enough to pack plenty of emotional punch into the compact format. A few have very detailed intimate scenes, though most have nothing more than steamy kisses. All of the HEAs were terrific, and a select few included short but satisfying epilogues. Since the theme of the masquerade is A Midsummer Night’s Dream, you can expect a plethora of Shakespeare quotes sprinkled throughout the entire collection.
Here's the lineup:
ALYSSA ALEXANDER – Season of Scandal
This one starts out as a strangers-in-the-night instant chemistry but soon is revealed to be a second-chance romance. The author brilliantly hinted at their connection in a way that added to the suspense rather than spoiling the surprise. I was rooting for these two right from the start and I was delighted with how the story unfolded.
JENNIFER ASHLEY – A Kiss for Luck
A confirmed bachelor with a thrice-widowed young woman, this story was surprisingly deep and moving. Gemma's three marriages couldn't have been different, and the one thing she learned from them all is that she's better off staying single. Guy is enthralled with her and is determined to convince her to give a marriage based on love a chance. This one had especially strong secondary characters who contributed substantially to the overall story.
GRACE BURROWES – Love Disguised
This story is a delightful tale of hidden identities. Rupert is disguised as a footman while Mary's costume is that of a maid, and they're constantly mistaken for staff rather than guests. They're each there to surreptitiously scout out the person they've been betrothed to, and of course it turns out exactly as we'd hope it would. This was perhaps the sweetest story in the bunch, simple yet profound, showcasing the very best of the human condition.
GINA CONKLE – Until You
A sweet romance wrapped up in a bit of a mystery, this story has a star-crossed feel to it as Emma is drawn to the enigmatic Mr. Ramsay despite their difference in stations. Their romance is all about finding freedom and fighting for what brings you joy. I loved every step of this story, each secret as it was revealed, each life-changing decision along the way.
EILEEN DREYER – Ill Met by Moonlight
Stacia and Hugh are another "engaged but never met" couple who meet when he seeks her out to discover just who is blackmailing him into marriage. The dialogue is sparkling, and I adored the layered interactions between these two. It's a bit of insta-love as well, since they do a very credible job of falling in love in just the one evening. There's more than just love they have to conquer, however, but once all the secrets are out a truly honorable solution is found and their HEA was enough to make a nun swoon.
ELIZABETH ESSEX – She Walks in Scandal
Nicholas is the only man who truly sees Violet for who she is, but as her fencing instructor there's no possible way he could ever be worthy of a future with her. Violet is an independent, self-confident young woman who is being forced into an arranged marriage and decides that if she's going to have to marry, she can at least choose her mate. I loved the vivid descriptions of their fencing lessons as well as the verbal sparring that peppered their interactions. This is the second story where the difference in social station is an obstacle, and it was beautifully handled. The secondary plot line involving the man her father wants her to wed was intriguing and sympathetic, and I hope he's a character who gets his HEA in a separate book. Meanwhile, Nicholas and Violet get one of the most triumphant HEAs in this collection.
BRONWEN EVANS – The Awakening of Lady Flora
James was the best friend of Flora's late husband, and he's been waiting for her to come out of mourning so he can be first in line when she's ready to consider moving on. Theirs is a tender romance, enhanced by his charming relationship with her three young daughters. A bit more steam than the other stories, this romance delivers a heartwarming story with a very satisfying HEA and epilogue.
ANNA HARRINGTON – One Enchanted Evening
The only main character who doesn't attend the masquerade, Mason lives next door to the main event and finds himself enchanted with Nora and her sweet but silent daughter. Traumatized by her husband's death, Nora is determined to help her daughter find her voice again and Mason is just the man to help. His charming dog, Brutus, is the real miracle worker here and I loved him every bit as much as Mason and Nora. This story gently deals with love and loss and learning to risk loving again.
JADE LEE – Her Wildest Dreams
Perhaps my favorite of the entire collection, this romance sensitively addresses the issue of racism as Su Ling adjusts to English Society after her long-lost father tracks her down in a Chinese monastery. She's a woman of honor and integrity who has survived much worse conditions than what she finds in a London ballroom, though she still needs Anthony's stalwart support to find the security she's always dreamt of. I loved how the author showed both characters as unusually intelligent and compassionate, and their ballroom HEA was one of the best in the book.
MADELINE MARTIN – Unmasking the Earl
Cecelia and Philip need more than a little magic, along with a generous helping of matchmaking from her aunt, as they both realize that what they've always thought they wanted in a partner might not be their true path to happiness. Cecelia has always sacrificed to take care of her family so she's unprepared for a man who is more than willing to sacrifice for her. Theirs is a sweet and charming romance with plenty of steam and a HEA that is sure to tug every heartstring, followed by the best epilogue of the entire collection.
MAY MCGOLDRICK – A Prince in the Pantry
This thoughtful and intriguing story not only addresses the class differences between royalty and those who have fallen from society but does so while shining a light on bigoted attitudes towards foreigners and the dangers of making assumptions. Timour knows he's supposed to select an English bride to facilitate the treaty between his country and Britain, but he's shrewd enough to be suspicious of the motivations behind the obvious choice being thrust upon him. When he meets Pearl, he immediately recognizes that she's in a class by herself and he isn't the least bit deterred by her current situation. I loved how Pearl never lost heart despite all the turmoil she'd learned to live with, and I nearly stood up and cheered when Timour solved both his problem and hers with a simple, well-placed conversation. It was a delightful story from start to finish, one of my favorites in this set.
ELLA QUINN – A Moonlight Kiss
When their initial courtship is put on hold while he proves himself to her family, Octavius and Marcella nearly lose their way back to each other. I loved the way these two were reunited and I especially enjoyed the way his family rallied to their support. Their triumphant HEA at the ball was surely the most talked about aspect of the entire enchanted evening.
ERICA RIDLEY – A Match Unmasked
This second-chance romance starts with the heartbreaking history between Kitty and Nathaniel after he left her right before her debutante ball to go join the military. Five years later, he's back and the masquerade ball is his chance to not only explain why he left but to prove to her that he's the only man for her now. Kitty has a hard time forgiving him for leaving until she understands his reasons. I loved the way his mother took charge of the situation as only a mother can and forced them to confront their feelings. Their HEA was never in doubt but still as satisfying as ever.
HEATHER SNOW – Lovers and Madmen
Edward hardens his heart and steels his spine when he learns that Calliope, the only woman he ever loved, has returned after eleven long years. Still reeling from her rejection of him, he's beyond cautious and fortifies the walls around his heart lest her undeniable charms sneak through his defenses again. Calliope never wanted to walk away from him, but her scheme to spur him to the altar all those years before backfired in the most unexpected way and the horrible timing kept them apart far too long. Their entire relationship was bittersweet, making their HEA all the sweeter when it finally came.
SABRINA YORK – One Simple Kiss
Liam and Rose's story is probably the hottest romance in the collection. Rose married a much older man in order to secure a safe and stable future for her sisters. Widowed now, her view of marriage has convinced her that she'd rather remain single. Liam, a lifelong friend who has loved her from afar and is now ready to start his own family, realizes that Rose's experience with marriage is not telling her the entire story of what pleasure is possible between a husband and wife. As the lessons commence, Rose finds the love she never thought possible and she and Liam find a very sweet and satisfying HEA.
Concluding thoughts:
I've read a lot of anthologies over the years, and this is the first one where I absolutely loved each and every story. Some have more emotional depth than others, but every one is a delightful jewel, a quick and easy read with likable characters and a solid HEA. If you're a fan of any of these authors or of the historical romance genre itself, you owe it to yourself to indulge in this extraordinary collection. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Lord and Lady Whitwell’s annual ball! This year’s masquerade ball is filled with fairytale gardens and fantastical costumes, sparkling champagne, and heartwarming romance. Opportunities abound for secret trysts in the shadows of moonlit walks, mistaken identities, delicious unmaskings, and perhaps even a magical spell or two. But one thing is certain—fifteen pairs of hearts will never be the same again.
The Awakening Of Lady Flora - Bronwen Evans 5 Stars Lady Flora decides has been a struggling widow for two years, her friend Lady Caroline persuades her to attend a masquerade to have some fun & who better to have fun with than her husband's best friend, James, Earl of Battling. He has loved her since they shared a kiss when she was eighteen but lost her to his best friend. A lovely best friend to lovers, husband’s best friend story. Strong characters & a well paced story had me sighing & shedding a tear at the end. I just loved it.
One Enchanted Evening - Anna Harrington 4.5 Stars Mason Granger a wealthy businessman & his shaggy, big dog, Brutus live next door to Lod & Lady Whitwell. On the evening of their Masquerade Ball Mason is drawn into his garden by the noise of the fireworks & who should he find there than Emmeline a young girl who hasn't spoken since a carriage accident that killed her father 18 months ago. Her mother Nora comes to find Emmeline. Brutus, with some help from Mason seeks to help to Emmeline &in the following weeks Nora & Mason fall in love. A short but absolutely delightful story that tugs at your heart strings. Brutus steals the book closely followed by Emmeline.
Unmasking The Earl - Madeline Martin 5 Stars Cecelia is an Earl’s daughter, for the last eight years, since her mother died she had taken care of her younger brother & sister while watching her father drink & gamble away their money. They don't need her anymore, so she wants to find a husband & asks her aunt Lady Bursbury, the matchmaker to help. Philip Willcott, the eighth Earl of Chambrook, also has asked Lady Bursbury's help in finding him a wife. She suggests his childhood friend, Cecelia who he hadn't seen for years - a masquerade, an aunt setting up the players, mistaken identity what could go wrong? A delightful read of not only of two people falling in love but Cecelia comes alive again, I loved the epilogue
A Prince In The Pantry - Mary McGoldrick 5 Stars Persian Prince Timour is in London on a diplomatic mission & believes a wife has been picked for him so he trades places with his male companion as he wants to discover the real people. Pearl Smith now has to work since her father is in a debtors' prison. Both are attending Whitwell's masquerade ball, they accidentally meet & end up leaving, having dinner & talking all night. However once dawn arrives they have to part. A heart warming story with a lovely twist at the end
A Match Unmasked - Erica Ridley 5 Stars Miss Kitty Stanley’s childhood boy-next-door, the arrogant, entirely too handsome daredevil Nathaniel Baxter, was supposed to stand up with her for the first dance the night of her come-out. He went off to war instead. Now five years later she’s a spinster of means, enjoying her freedom at the masquerade ball of the season. Kitty has forgotten that old foolish tendre. She has no need for Brigadier Baxter. A delightful read, the chemistry between Nathaniel & Kitty was electric & the sexual tension whilst they were eating the strawberries & drinking wine was spine tingling. I loved this second chance romance & applaud the author for the depth of characters in a short story. I laughed at the fork to the spoon & sighed when they found their HEA at last. A well written heart warming novella Fifteen wonderful novellas that wil make you sigh but also fall in love with the characters My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Season of Scandal, Alyssa Alexander Miss Prudence Chapman goes as a soldier to the masquerade ball where she catches the attention of Noah Clarke, new Earl of Parkwood. They flirt via nerdy Shakespeare references, do handjobs in the garden, and then discover they knew each other way back when.
I would have liked this so much better without the nonsensical "you BROKE YOUR PROMISE SEVEN YEARS AGO" bullshit. Also? Prue was the type of heroine who is (a) clearly a modern plant; and (b) super annoying. 1 star
A Kiss for Luck, Jennifer Ashley Lord Guy Lovell is shooketh when pretty widow Gemma Cooke stumbles into his hiding place. They flirt and discover feelings!
Eh. Completely serviceable but extremely boring. Too much time spent on extraneous drama instead of emotional and character development. 2 stars
Love Disguised, Grace Burrowes Rupert, Earl of Esterly, dresses up as a footman and flirts with a cutey patootie maid, Mary, Lady Sefton. It's INFATUATION, BABY.
This was actually not terrible, but OH MY GOD SO SHORT. 3 stars
Until You, Gina Conkle Emma Middleton meets Mr. Colum Ramsey at a curiosity shop and he hires her to find the provenance of a ruby ring. Turns out he's the bastard son of a Duke and also a footman!
It's instalove but with frills. This was long and kind of boring, and I didn't like either the heroine or the hero. 2 stars
Ill Met By Moonlight, Eileen Dreyer Anastadia Dunn is engaged to Major Hugh Fitzwilliam, Duke of Maubry, even though they haven't met yet. When a man dressed as a donkey starts flirting with her, she's into it until she realizes that it's actually Hugh! OH SNAP.
I didn't quite like the denouement / reunion element of this because it didn't feel needed. Things could have been wrapped up without losing all that momentum, but also the reliance on a donkey mask ain't cute. 3 stars
She Walks in Scandal, Elizabeth Essex The Honorable Miss Violet Worth proposes marriage to her fencing master, Nicholas Gowan. He waffles. Drama ensues. Etc.
This was almost incoherent in that there were too many threads with too many driving motivations for a short story. I must give Essex some props, however, for the almost heartbreaking middle bits where it truly does feel as though there is no chance for our alleged star-crossed lovers, but that gets resolved by some deus ex machina revelations in the final chapter. 2 stars
The Awakening of Lady Flora, Bronwen Evans Lady Flora Stanton is a widow. Her dead husband's best friend, James Tennison, Earl of Battling, is way into her. They flirt and bone and get married.
This did not work for me. The emotional nonsense was nonsense. 1 star
One Enchanted Evening, Anna Harrington Mason Granger's garden gets invaded by the quiet Emmeline and her mother, Nora, Lady Davenport. While he works a miracle cure on the daughter, he's also working a miracle cure on Nora's pants. DUN DUN DUN.
Eh: the competent writing was undermined by the ridiculous characterization and lack of reason for any of the decisions made by any of the characters. Mason is also pretty handsy with a woman he just met, which didn't read as romantic. 2 stars
Her Wildest Dreams, Jade Lee Heir to the Duke of Birchill, Anthony Cole, is told to go chase off the unsuitable Su Ling Phillips from his cousin. Except when he shows up, she's super fly! It's love!
Anthony is told by his family to "deal with" Su Ling; after she gives him The Boners, he proceeds to do NOTHING to stop them from being humongous assholes to her and somehow manages to act surprised that they STILL THINK SHE'S UNSUITABLE? Sorry, Anthony: that's some dumb shit. Also noting that the intro blurb totally misspells Su Ling's name as "Si Yu" SO THAT'S A THING. THANKS, EDITORS. Other than those glaring issues, this wasn't terrible. 2 stars
Unmasking the Earl, Madeline Martin Lady Cecelia Stopford asks a friend to set her up; Philip Willcott, Earl of Chambrook, does the same. The friend sets them up with each other and it's GO TIME BABES.
This was FINE. Philip fucking winks all over the place, and there was absolutely some textual bing-bonging that got tiring. 3 stars
A Prince in the Pantry, May McGoldrick Prince Timour Mirza trades places with his aide and meets the down-on-her-luck Pearl Smith. They bond over literature and tragedy before their magical night ends, separating them...."FOREVER". JK.
Timour was an interesting hero; Pearl a tolerable heroine. 3 stars
A Moonlight Kiss, Ella Quinn Lord Octavious Trevor ends up in Tortola where he meets Miss Marcella Calder and it's INSTALOVE except they can't get married right away so things go sideways.
This was clunky as hell and I had to drag myself through it one exhausting chapter at a time. The VERY OBVIOUS obfuscation of the hero's name by the heroine's sister was fucking ridiculous, and the "inheritance" of the earldom at the end was HILARIOUSLY foolish. 1/4 star
A Match Unmasked, Erica Ridley Miss Kitty Stanley was totally into Nathaniel Baxter but he left her for WAR. She is super betrayed or some shit until they actually TALK TO ONE ANOTHER. Shocking.
Another second chance romance story that was predictable af, and annoying, and ridiculous. 1.5 stars
Lovers and Madmen, Heather Snow Lord Edward Phillip Thomas George Walpole, Marquess of Burbridge, was totally into Lady Calliope Hughs until she married SOMEONE ELSE. He is super betrayed or some shit until they actually TALK TO ONE ANOTHER. Shocking.
...Another second chance romance story that was predictable af, and annoying, and ridiculous. (Can anyone else hear the echo?) 1 star
One Simple Kiss, Sabrina York Liam MacKinnon was totally into Lady Rose Bentley de Vreis until she married SOMEONE ELSE. He is going to seduce the shit out of her now that she's married.
...And ANOTHER second chance romance story that was predictable af, and annoying, and ridiculous. (ECHO ECHO ECHO) .5 stars
There is nothing better than a collection of stories surrounding an event and in this case a masquerade ball. More amazing is the fabulous group of authors that have each written each novella!
In A MATCH UNMASKED by Erica Ridley, reunites Nathaniel and Kitty who had always loved each other but been apart for several years. Plans are afoot to reunite these two at the ball and see the joy as they come together. Simply romantic and a wonderful story!
UNMASKING THE EARL by Madeline Martin has a matchmaker bringing together two people seeking to find a spouse and have each asked her help. They are brought together and realize they had known each other when children but they have a little journey to find their happy ending! Wonderful as this author always brings me a sigh and smile!
Anna Harrington, in ONE ENCHANTED EVENING, does indeed make it the best evening ever for Nora and Mason. With the help of Brutus, a handsome boy of the four legged kind, Nora's daughter Emmeline, who hasn't spoken since a terrible accident, seems to start opening up. Mason helps too with his kind heart and as he spends time with Nora and her daughter he realizes he has been too wrapped up in business and missing life. A very special story that will not soon be forgotten.
Trading places takes the stage as Mary McGoldrick's A PRINCE IN THE PANTRY shows how a Prince doesn't want anyone to know who his real identity. He meets a lady, who he thinks is a worker at the masquerade, but she may be more than she appears too! A winding journey to their happy ever after but so sweet at the end!
Ella Quinn shows us in A MOONLIGHT KISS, that love is worth waiting for when a couple meet and fall in love at first sight. But it takes a few years to come back together and shows true love never ends. So romantic!
In THE AWAKENING OF LADY FLORA by Bronwen Evans, Lady Flora finds herself at the ball and recognizes her deceased husband's best friend James, Earl of Battling. What she doesn't know if James has loved Flora forever and did not pursue her because his best friend had her in his sights. So heartwarming and lovely as these two come together.
Gina Conkle brings us romance in UNTIL YOU, when two people come together in a most unexpected way. He needs answers from his past and she needs an answer to her future! They both get their wish and a sigh worthy dance will enchant you!
A woman is being forced to marry in SHE WALKS IN SCANDAL by Elizabeth Essex. But she will not give into her father because she is in love with another. A daughter of a Viscount and her fencing instructor find they cannot deny their love. A fun time to their happy ending!
LOVE DISGUISED by Grace Burrows tells the story of how those at the ball may appear one to be something they are not. Or could it be the other way around? It is a masquerade ball! A footman saves a maid from being put upon by a bounder and the rest is history. But who are they really? A fun story that will have you smiling!
When pursued relentlessly, A KISS FOR LUCK by Jennifer Ashley shows there are good men who will rescue a lovely lady and not expect more. She is a widow with men after her and his is a handsome rake who never thinks he will marry. But you just never know as these two come together!
In ONE SIMPLE KISS by Sabrina York, two people are brought back together after years and find that one has to be patient to help another understand what real love can be. Simply wonderful!
A disguise can often bring out the fun and in A SEASON OF SCANDAL by Alyssa Alexander, a couple find they both love the Bard. Quoting Shakespeare and romance in the garden is nothing compared to their surprise when they are unmasked!
Jade Lee brings us an unexpected romance in HER WILDEST DREAMS, as a future duke tries to discover who his next duchess will be! Will he be able to romance her into taking a chance with him for a future of love?
What more would you expect at the ball but LOVERS AND MADMEN by Heather Snow. Two people who had been promised to each other when young, but never marry due to a terrible circumstance, find themselves back together after many years. Will they find that love again or will the past hold them back?
A search for a blackmailer in ILL MET BY MOONLIGHT by Eileen Dreyer, a Duke is determined to find her. But what he finds is not what he expected. Can happiness come to this ill tempered but handsome man?
What a steal for the $0.99 pre-order price tag! There were a thousand pages of romance in there!
All of these stories were original and touched, at least in part, a magical masquerade ball. While there were a few in there I did not care for and could not finish, I really enjoyed reading most of them.
I really enjoyed the following stories: -Jennifer Ashley - avowed bachelor finally falls for a young, beautiful, but unassuming widow -Eileen Dreyer - case of mistaken identity and a woman who sticks up for herself and a hero who grovels satisfactorily for redemption -Elizabeth Essex - swordplay and wittiness abound in this story of a determined viscount's daughter and a fencing master (not sure of the HEA but it was a fun ride anyway) -Bronwen Evans - dreamiest, most patient hero ever--never read this author before but I'm checking her backlist now -Madeline Martin - charming hero with mistaken identities and true to the description, sweeps you off your feet -Erica Ridley - I don't care for her novels much, but when I'm in the mood for a light-hearted charming story, she always delivers. This is no different.
Okay - check it out! This was a great deal. It was such fun to try out many authors with loosely connected stories. A great summer escape.
This is an anthology of 15 different tales. The stories include tales of land and sea. From a ball to a masquerade. All are good but some are better than others. I received a complimentary copy of this book from one of the authors. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
Really enjoying this one! The idea is clever: Novellas from many historical romance authors with a common element - they all take place at one masquerade party. The novellas are short but enjoyable, and I'm finding lots of new-to-me authors to follow and check out their other works. There's far too many to read in one sitting, but I'm enjoying slowly making my way through them in between other books.
*Thanks to Erica Ridley and Rose Garden Books for providing an e-arc for review.
I enjoyed all the stories in this anthology. My Star rating - 8 books 5 Stars, 4 books 4 Stars & 3 books 3 Stars. It had some of my favorite authors, a couple brand new to me & a couple I may have read 1 or 2 of their books. Each story had a funny or unusual meetings of the couple; each couple had a unique, strange or life changing circumstance & all were connected to Whitwell's masquerade ball. All were easy to read & have a HEA, I highly recommend this anthology to all historical romance readers. I voluntarily read & reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts & opinions are my own. I have given my brief synopsis on each below:
ONE SIMPLE KISS by Sabrina York - Liam had a Scottish mother & was the bastard son of an earl who came to live with the earl & his legitimate son, William when Liam was young. They had all grown up together, including Liam, & now he was back in London - when they meet again bantering, arguments, fireworks, humor & romance abound. This was a wonderful HEA!
LOVERS AND MADMEN by Heather Snow - Calliope "Pea" & Edward "Teddy" were a great couple that would get a second chance after eleven years. When they were very young, they had been promised to each other by their parents, but Calliope wanted to get married when she was eighteen & Edward wanted her to have a season. She was caught in a compromising situation & was forced to marry another. Widowed & back from being held in France with plans from her godparents, the Whitwells, can they forgive/forget the past?

Kitty lost the only man she would ever love five years ago when he didn't dance her first dance at her come out. A storm disabled a ship & it limped to safety for repairs, the newly appointed Captain meets young miss the first night - they are both attracted to one another, but he must leave to make his way to take care of her in marriage. It takes three years to marry with a fun HEA planned by their families in London.

Along the way Anthony tried to convince her to take a chance on love - but could she & would the family ever accept her as the future duchess????
ONE ENCHANTED EVENING by Anna Harrington - I enjoyed Nora, widowed baroness; her young daughter, Emmeline who hasn't spoken since a carriage accident that killed her father 18 months ago; Mason Granger a wealthy businessman & his shaggy, big dog, Brutus. Brutus, with some help from Mason gets through to Emmeline & Nora & Mason fall in love - some very tender moments & Brutus was a hoot!
THE AWAKENING OF LADY FLORA by Bronwen Evans - A widow for two years, Lady Flora decides to have some fun & who better to have fun with than her husband's best friend. At the masquerade ball, she will know James, Earl of Battling, mainly because of his limp, but he will not recognize her. He has loved her and lost her to his best friend, but she never knew. Interesting things happen at a masquerade balls - I needed tissues at the end but a HEA.
SHE WALKS IN SCANDAL by Elizabeth Essex - Violet being forced to marry by her haughty, stubborn viscount father but that won't happen. She is also very stubborn & independent & she is in love with a swordsman. Master Nicholas Gowan is Violet's fencing instructor & in eight months he has fallen in love with her. Two different classes - he has no money - she will be cut off & sometimes it takes a village for a HEA!
ILL MET BY MOONLIGHT by Eileen Dreyer - Meet the newly titled Duke of Maubry who is handsome, completely in debt & is an "ass". He attends a masquerade ball to discover who is the lady is that he is being blackmailed to marry. He bride to be is Tatiana, Fairy Queen, who is rich merchant's daughter, beautiful & the future Perfume Queen. A fairy tale come true!
UNTIL YOU by Gina Conkle - This was a sigh worthy romance between a Scottish footman looking for his past in London & an insurance owner's daughter who is an expert & collects gem intaglios. She is the answer to his bastard past & he will be her answer to the future. I loved Colum & Emma's romance, especially the dance in the grotto.
LOVE DISGUISED by Grace Burrowes - Society is celebrating the masquerade ball of the season; the heroine is a maid & our hero is a footman, both working at the ball - or are they???? What a romantic & fun rescue the hero made by sending a lord packing after he tried forcing himself on a maid. Afterward, he helps calm her down, brings her food, they talk & share some kisses - now neither one can forget the other one. They are both surprised in the end & it left me smiling
A KISS FOR LUCK by Jennifer Ashley - A three time widowed & beautiful young woman is rescued at a ball from an overzealous suitor. Her defender is the second son of a marques, a confirmed rake & bachelor who is handsome, funny & kind. The romance was so much fun!
SEASON OF SCANDAL by Alyssa Alexander - This was a romantic night at a Masquerade Ball with a soon to be spinster, dressed as a soldier & a man no costume, dressed in a suit of black with a cape & a mask. The couple take turns quoting from Shakespeare, have a dalliance in the garden & the unmasking at midnight has a surprise ending.
There are some real gems in this box set! Some heavy hitters in the romance genre in this and at $.99 it's easy to overlook. I ARC read or auto purchase for over half of the authors in this box. All the stories are connected by the Midsummer Ball hosted by Lord & Lady Whitwell. I haven't finished this wonder ful box set yet as I have to move on to other ARCs but I'm starting my review to finish at a later date.
Erica Ridley's A Match Unmasked is about Miss Kitty Stanley, a spinster wallflower heiress. She gets roped into attending the ball by her beloved Godmother, who happens to be the mother of her former next door neighbor & best friend Nathaniel Baxter. He was supposed to stand up and be her 1st dance at her coming out but instead shipped off to the war without a goodbye. Now years later he's back as a Brigadier war hero and no one knows he's back. His mother sets them up to hash out their hurts and get together by locking them in a room together. It's a fun love tale of finally being honest, forgiveness and maturing.
Jennifer Ashley's A Kiss For Luck is Lord Guy Lovell who is a 2nd son, therefore the spare, who lives a lark filled life of nothingness and he meets Mrs. Gemma Cooke. She's a 3 times widowed young woman who is ducking suitors who want in her in bed and her fortune. She meets Guy when he's in an upstairs sitting room enjoying a quiet cigar. He helps her hide, sends the boor away and they find they like each other as they chat after. I loved this story of a lonely man with a heart of gold and a woman who just wants someone to love her.
May McGoldrick's A Prince in the Pantry is a trading places story. The Crown Prince Timour Mirza of Persia is in London to make a treaty with the English. To seal the deal he must take home an English Wife. He knows there has been one selected for him and she is meant to be a spy for the government. His 1st event upon arriving is the masquerade ball and he trades places with his cousin & Aide Ali Kahn. He get accosted by 2 bully grooms beside the house & lays them flat. This is observed by Miss Pearl Smith, formerly society miss, now daughter of a rich merchant thrown into debtors prison because he did trade with France before the war broke out. Pearl is working for a former friend Rosa Cly who is the daughter of the English Foreign Secretary, as a seamstress to make ends meet. She hopes to have Rosa intercede with her Dad on behalf of Pearl's father. Timour & Pearl end up spending the evening together having dinner & getting to know each other. It's a delightful tale of a Prince who wants a wife who might love and help him rule, and a woman desperate to rescue her father. It was a wonderful Cinderella tale and May got to write about her heritage.
Anna Harrington's One Enchanted Evening was my favorite so far. This is about the Whitwell's next door neighbor businessman Mason Granger, a work-a-holic who only wants peace and quiet to work on his business dealings. He found himself renting the house next door to party central for the Season. A little girl wonders into his back yard to watch the fireworks he tries to talk to her to find her Momma. He's puzzled when she won't say a word. Her widowed mother Nora appears to take her home. They are staying with the Whitwells as she has little money because it's all going to doctors to heal her daughter's voice. Mason has a unique take on little Emmeline's problem and proceeds to help her mother encourage Emma to speak once again. This is a golden jewel of a story about a man with a soft heart who is lonely and doesn't know it until he spends time with Nora and Emmeline. He has a wonderful huge mutt Brutus who just about steals the story and definitely does little Emmeline's heart.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. I also pre-ordered a copy of this book as well. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
One magical masquerade ball, The event of the season. Love is in the air, Fifteen couples’ lives will change As you, the reader, watch.
I have only read a few of the stories so far but am enamored and eager to read more. I have decided the BEST way for me to enjoy these stories are to indulge in one at a time over a period of time. Perhaps reading a bit before bed or while soaking decadently in the tub with a tasty beverage.
There are authors I have read and know I love and others I am eager to befriend as I read about the couples they have created to be at this enchanted society gathering. I am sure there will be gorgeous costumes, music, dances, food, flirtation and much more as I enjoy pages filled with delightful surprises.
After reading of a foreign prince meeting the perfect woman and of a couple given a second chance to find their happily ever after, I am ready read the next story in this anthology when I head upstairs to run the bathwater, climb into the tub, and escape into this collection of delightful stories.
Thank you to author Erica Ridley for the ARC – This is my honest review.
Until You – Gina Conkle I loved this sweet story of a chance meeting, a favor asked, another chance meeting, a footman, a waltz and a bastard. How can you not resist. This story of class differences was lovely. Colum and Emma are both great characters who give into their feelings. A great epilogue.
One Enchanted Evening - Anna Harrington Wow, for a short story this sure packed a punch. Get out the tissues for this one. Anna knows how to get you involved with the characters in a story. Mason, Nora, Emmeline and Brutus make a wonderful family. I loved it!
The Awakening of Lady Flora – Bronwen Evans I really loved this story of a man who moves aside for his best friend to woo the lady he loves. Years later the characters get to reunite at a masquerade. The love and passion oozes off the page of this story. James and Flora are so amazing together. A great story.
A Matched Unmasked – Erica Ridley He was the fork to her spoon. A lovely second chance romance with two very likeable characters. Kitty and Nathaniel were so adorable. Who will win the Egyptian vase with all of the wagers at the masked ball? This story just made you feel good. Lovely.
One Simple Kiss – Sabrina York A fantastic story by Sabrina will have you rooting for Liam and Rose, especially Rose who had no idea what love could be. I loved how Liam was patient in his pursuit and let Rose dictate how the courtship would go. A delightful story and a hint of another one?
I received a complimentary copy from one of the authors.
I just love when I read a book with multiple authors. It gives me a chance to read authors that I have read before and ones I have not. This was an enjoyable collection that I would recommend. At this time, I have only read 4 stories, so I will review them. I can’t wait to finish this book. Season of Scandal by Alyssa Alexander – This is a cute book about a woman who did not want to follow the rules of the Ton anymore. She wanted to have fun to have a Scandal. She meets a masked man at a masked ball, and they click. The problem is when he takes off his mask, he is the man that broke her heart years ago. A Kiss for Luck by Jennifer Ashley – I have not read a book by this author, but I know I will. She writes so nice the time flew. This is about a lady who has been a widow three times and a man who has never been married. With Guy charming her who would not want to marry for the fourth time. Love Disguised by Grace Burrowes – This is another nice short read about hiding your title and status when you meet someone and getting to know the real person. This might have happened by accident, but it was the start to a happy marriage. A Match Unmasked by Erica Ridley - This was such a nice, cute story about Kitty and Nathaniel. They were friends since they were little. Their mothers always thought someday they would get married. When Kitty was making her come-out Nathaniel was going to dance with her, but instead he did not show up and joined the army. For five years Kitty has been mad at him. This is the story of the night he returns home, and they meet each other again. I enjoyed this story like I enjoyed all Erica Ridley stories. I received an ARC for my honest opinion.
A delightful anthology of Regency romances written by fifteen accomplished authors, I found this book difficult to put down once I started reading it. Many of the plots revolved around reunions between friends as with the opening and closing books and others brought a tear as broken hearts were healed, especially those wounded when separated by war. I particularly enjoyed the story of a little girl who found a friend in the well-trained Fluppy. There were moments of humor as two aristocrats assumed the role of servants, proving that they were fated to meet, and of course the foreign prince who found himself with a different view of what took place below stairs. I have read all the well-written books in this anthology, most of them deserving of five stars. I received this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
What a fantastic collection this is! So many stories, all themed around the same annual Midsummer ball, to keep you occupied over a slow weekend. I found some new to me authors that I will be following in the future, as well as some well-loved authors that I currently follow. I especially loved Erica Ridley’s story “A Match Unmasked”. Through a misunderstanding, Nathaniel leaves Kitty behind and joins the War against Napolean. When he returns to London, Kitty is sure that she will never forgive him, but when they are thrown together at a masquerade ball, who knows what will happen! Don’t miss this collection of Regency tales.
Fabulous stories by fabulous authors that will put you in a great mood!
Kitty and Nathaniel aka spoon and fork make an awesome couple. The entire novella takes place in a couple hours but is full of witty conversation and gives the reader ample opportunity to fall in love with these two wonderful characters. - Erica Ridley
A MATCH UNMASKED by Erica Ridley 5 Stars Beautifully romantic (and CLEAN) with a hunky hero and a beautiful ice queen heroine. The plot is engaging, the writing superb, the dialogue crisp and realistic, and the touch of humor perfect!
SEASON OF SCANDAL by Alyssa Alexander 3 Stars Shakespeare fans will like this story.
A KISS FOR LUCK by Jennifer Ashley 5 Stars This is an absolutely DELIGHTFUL story. It has passionate, but clean, romance, a touch of humor, great dialogue, and a believable plot. I loved Gemma and Lord Guy.
LOVE DISGUISED by Grace Burrowes 5 Stars Lovely, sweet, clean, romantic short story/novelette. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
UNTIL YOU by Gina Conkle. 5 Stars A beautiful, old fashioned, romantic love story. Like a fairy tale…
ILL MET BY MOONLIGHT by Eileen Dreyer. 5 ++ Stars I loved every word of this story! What a fabulous, clean romance! Stacia and her donkey were amazing.
SHE WALKS IN SCANDAL by Elizabeth Essex. 3 Stars Happy ever after. A bit spicy.
THE AWAKENING OF LADY FLORA by Bronwen Evans. 3 Stars A nice romance. R Rated.
ONE ENCHANTED EVENING by Anna Harrington. 5 Stars Wonderful, sensitive, romantic love story!
HER WILDEST DREAMS by Jade Lee 5 Stars. Fabulous clean romance!
UNMASKING THE EARL by Madeline Martin 5 Stars Cecelia, her aunt, and Philip are wonderful characters and the plot is believable. This is a lovely romance. Warning: R Rated scene near the end of the story.
A PRINCE IN THE PANTRY by May McGoldrick 5 Stars Marvelous romance involving an incognito Persian prince and a down-on-her-luck English lady. Wonderful story!
A MOONLIGHT KISS by Ella Quinn 4 Stars This is a very sweet & clean love at first sight romance. You’ll like it!
LOVERS AND MADMEN by Heather Snow. 4 Stars Sometimes love just can’t be buried deep enough to remain out of sight. Excellent romance with a touch of humor and a touch of R rated passion.
ONE SIMPLE KISS by Sabrina York 4 Stars A darling tale of rekindled love with strong, fully rounded characters (exceptionally so for a short story), good dialogue, and an almost believable plot. Rated R for explicit sex scenes.
A match unmasked by Erica Ridley Five years ago, Kitty Stanley had waited for Nathaniel Baxter to ask her to dance at her debut ball but he never arrived. Nathaniel had gone off to war without telling Kitty and she hasn’t forgiven him. They meet again at a masquerade ball, is it too late to put things right between them? This was an enjoyable read with likeable characters. An interfering mother also has an influence. Love Disguised by Grace Burrows The action takes place at the same ball, Rupert, Earl of Esterley, is disguised as a footman and as a result is made aware of what life is like for those below stairs. Something that he hasn’t considered in his life before. He helps a maid called Mary and feels a real connection to her. Their difference in station and the fact that he is almost betrothed to someone he hasn’t met, means that nothing can come of it. This was a short but entertaining read. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of these stories.
This is a wonderful collaboration of authors I love, including some I haven’t read in a while! On a night meant for romance at a ball filled with hopes and dreams, follow 15 couples as they find their happily ever after. Join the ball as an observer where you will watch the scandalous set tongues wagging, see a chambermaid and a footman find love where they least expected to, listen to a little girl find her voice, and read about second chances. Even if you read just one of the stories in this book, it will leave a warm feeling in your heart.
I like this format- multiple authors with a common event. Some stories were better than others and of course each had a happy ending- perfect for night time reading where you don't want to think too hard.
"A Midsummer Night's Romance" anthology 15 authors
A FUN REGENCY ROMP – JOIN THE PARTY I truly loved each of the stories by these 15 authors, some authors I have read before, some are new to me. I enjoyed the variety, and, that each story is connected via "The Whitwell Ball" the event of the season. I binge read this anthology which I do not recommend as my eyes are exhausted, but my heart and soul are doing happy dances as I recall the different stories. All 15 stories in this collection are worthy reads. Happy Reading ! ! Note: I was gifted an ARC of this anthology by one of the authors. This review expresses my honest opinion
A midsummer nights romance- I’ve just read some of the best stories. Different couples meet at the same masquerade house party. Great romances with fairies and dukes to footman and ladies of means. The awaking of Lady flora- Flora has lost her husband. Little does she know that her and her husbands best friend is in love with her. Now she has to see if she can open her heart again. 5* A match unmasked- Misunderstandings pull apart two old friends that had secretly loved each other since they were children. A mask ball brings them back together. Wonderful story. 5*
This was a great book to read, I discovered new-to-me authors that I will definitely be interested in finding more of their work. I admit there were a couple I couldn't read, but there are so many good stories in here, it is worth it. I took my time and enjoyed the theme of all the authors writing about the same masquerade ball. I recommend this book. I was given an advanced reader copy and am voluntarily sharing my honest opinion.
What a great escape. I ended up reading this during a very busy and harried time and this was the perfect distraction. I could read one short, sweet story to escape before sleep. Night after night another fabulous love story. I loved every character. Every story. I loved the little Easter eggs thrown in that tied the different stories together. Utterly fabulous.
This is a big anthology of stories by excellent historical romance authors. I was invited to review by Erica Ridley. All the stories are good, and the collection as a whole is great if you need a quick fix of romance. No one story stood out to me; I am sorry to say. Each was interesting and good in its own way.
It is definitely worth getting this book in your collection. I think I will come back to it again; I believe it is best not to read it all at once. Each story will stand on its own when not surrounded in your mind by all the others. It is fun to read the various romantic tropes handled in different ways by different authors as well.
A Midsummer Night's Romance is a great collection stories written by some of the best authors around. The stories are filled with beautiful, costumed women and handsome, masked men. All of the novellas are set at the Whitwell's Annual Masquerade Ball and what a ball it is! There is so much action going on at this ball! There are lover's trysts, fights, mistaken identities, reunions, and more. There are 15 stories in all so it takes some time to read them all, but it is definitely worth it.
This will take you a little to read ALL 15 stories but it is fun seeing them all from different authors and revolve around the same party. You get the preparation for the event, the ball itself, and what happens after from these wonderful, delightful, inventive authors. There are so many things to tell but with 15 stories it would be hard to pinpoint specifics. I will say you will laugh, cry, and cheer on the whimsy of all the goings-on that the characters endure.
There is only one villian-type and that is the last story but it is age related
These are funny, whimsical, witty, action packed, wonderful characters, great world building, Page turner, romantic, happy ever after, and easy to read.
Let's Have a Ball! Fifteen really lovely stories in one anthology is quite something! Each one is based on the same Midsummer Night Ball but is written with a different set of unique characters and of course each has its own happy ever after. Some of the stories are better than others (which is to be expected when you have 15 all together under one umbrella) but I am quite happy that every one of them is easy to read, has a really unusual set of circumstances and very likable and easy to relate to characters and so I am happy to recommend this anthology. I read an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) of all of the stories in this anthology and my voluntary review above is based on my own thoughts while reading it.
A Collection of 15 books written by different authors based around a Masquerade Ball in London. Not all start at the ball, on occasion the story finishes there, but a nice idea to base a series of books around something central. Some are part of other series, which has led to re-reading other books in that series, Erica Ridley’s, Ella Quinn's, and Jennifer Ashley’s books in particular. Always good to read new instalments in a series. Some are very short one in particular stood out Anna Harrington’s book, very short but very sweet. Some were 3* a few 5*, but on average 4* for the set. Easy to read as no story took hours so easy to read one book and put down until next reading time. Would definitely recommend.
