this explanation/intro will be posted before each day’s short story. scroll down to get to the story-review.
this is the SIXTH year of me doing a short story advent calendar as my december project. for those of you new to me or this endeavor, here’s the skinny: every day in december, i will be reading a short story that is 1) available free somewhere on internet, and 2) listed on goodreads as its own discrete entity. there will be links provided for those of you who like to read (or listen to) short stories for free, and also for those of you who have wildly overestimated how many books you can read in a year and are freaking out about not meeting your 2020 reading-challenge goals. i have been gathering links all year when tasty little tales have popped into my feed, but i will also accept additional suggestions, as long as they meet my aforementioned 1), 2) standards.
GR has deleted the pages for several of the stories i've read in previous years without warning, leaving me with a bunch of missing reviews and broken links, which makes me feel shitty. i have tried to restore the ones i could, but my to-do list is already a ball of nightmares, so that's still a work-in-progress. however, because i don't have a lot of time to waste, i'm not going to bother writing much in the way of reviews for these, in case GR decides to scrap 'em again.
i am doing my best. merry merry.
DECEMBER 20: THE WORTHINGTON - EMILY CARROLL
it wouldn't be a short story advent calendar without an emily carroll story. now, you might say "THAT IS NOT A STORY, THAT IS...." and your accusation would stop short there, because you wouldn't quite know what to call it. is it a story, is it a game, is it an interactive story-game? I DON'T KNOW, I'M NOT A DOCTOR. whatever it is, it's by emily carroll, and it wouldn't be a short story advent calendar without an emily carroll...and here we are again. this review is brought to you by the experience of reading The Worthington.
Happy Halloween. A series of very short shorts, just attempts to create the creepy, elegant atmosphere in The Worthington, a horror hotel. The cool thing is that when you open any door in this link
and you follow the lead of the digital images, you will get a little shiver. Not really stories in any conventional sense, just a series of images to unsettle you.
What an interesting premise You are at Worthington Hotel and there are 6 doors that you can chose from. Behind each door is a creepy scene taking place. Once you've gone through, chose another door and so on.
Carroll unnerves me, such that a very brief entertainment is plenty.
Happily, karen's 2021 advent calendar included this one. I'm going back over seven years worth at more-or-less random, because I seem to be too busy to read longer works in December, so why not take advantage of long nights with nothing else to do in January?
The link is posted in karen's review, which I can't be bothered to link to because I am not so proficient on my phone. Sorry, karen.
Part of a collection of free very short stories on the author web site (emcarroll.com) that I will explore and review during the next few days. This one was all about creating an atmosphere very fast. I also like the little interactive side to it since it's online the author allows herself to use that media. I liked it!
Anything by Emily Carroll is perfect for October. I’ve decided that we should extend the spookiness of Halloween to the entire month! The Worthington is a multimedia short story available on her website. It’s a quick read with beautiful artwork and an atmosphere that sent a chill down my spine. It is fun to see several characters that the author has used in her other work, such as her book When I Arrived at the Castle (2019).

This was spooky. I really enjoyed the concept; we're presented of a series of rooms (I'm guessing hotel rooms), and behind each is a different scene or story. It was an interesting concept with art just eerie enough to creep me out.
I really liked this little collection of poems, I think I'd love to read a longer version of this? Different hotel rooms with different stories within them. Some great, occasionally gory, horror too! The art was incredible for this one. Definitely a great one!
