"That man is a coward. He's always afraid."
"Shut up! You bitch! Shut up now!"
"Do you know the reason why demons can't live together? And why demons kill each other? He only gathered the demons together to prevent himself from being attacked. You are only being manipulated."
You can say all you want about Demon Slayer, but you can't deny that the author knows how to tell a story. I am sure that I pointed that out already, but I need to praise the author for his 'show, don't tell' skills. We're not told that Tanjiro's persistent and Nezuko's strong - we've been shown that. We're not told that Tanjiro has a pure and kind-hearted nature, Zenitsu is a coward and Inosuke is crazy - we've been shown that. It's all in the smallest of moments that didn't need to be there, but are there, maybe not just for the sake of the main characters, but also for the sake of their opponents - the demons who are supposed to be enemies that need to be slayed, yes, but are also portrayed as the lost souls who had been awfully wronged in their previous lives and awfully manipulated in their current lives.
"I can do it! I can definitely do it! I am an accomplished man! Nevermind my broken bones and all that, I can still do this! I can still fight!" [Tanjiro]
I can't explain enough how much I love Tanjiro's kind-hearted nature. He's one of the most pured anime MC's I have ever seen. He's so gentle and nice when it comes to other people, especially children. He's calm and collected in every situation, being brave and persistent in every fight, no matter what state he's in. He is the type of person who wouldn't give up, ever. He would get up and keep on fighting, over and over again, until the moment of his last breath.
"Tanjiro... Tanjiro, are you listening? You will protect me, right? You will definitely protect me, right?"
"Zenitsu. There is something I must apologize to you about. Actually, my ribs and leg both have fractures that haven't healed yet due to my last battle. So..."
"Ehhh?! Why do you have bone fractures! How do you have bone fractures! If you have bone fractures, who's going to protect me! I'm going to die!"
Let's talk about Zenitsu right now, shall we? It's been a while after I finished watching the anime, and honestly, I kind of forgot how annoying Zenitsu used to be. Maybe at some point I got used to it and didn't even blink an eye on his shenanigans, but I'm back to gritting my teeth because of him. There is such a big gap between the characters of Tanjiro and Zenitsu, it's actually incredible. They are the total opposites of each other, and that was intentional, I'm sure, but that's not a good thing, considering how Zenitsu's character never really changed (but that's something to talk about in a different review). There are the small moments where Zenitsu stands up, like him protecting the kid from a demon or him protecting Nezuko's box from Inosuke, but these aren't enough for me to change my mind about his character. He's a coward, and that's fine. He's a crybaby, and that's fine. Truly. But that's all he is (until he falls into a coma), and it's something I have trouble accepting.
P.S. don't even get me started on his annoying tendency to shout every five seconds, even in a place he definitely shouldn't be shouting to not attract any attention *sigh*
"Stop messing around! The demon is right there!"
"I don't care!"
Inosuke though, it's not as annoying as Zenitsu is. I admire his will to fight and his recklessness, he reminds me a lot of Zaraki Kenpachi from BLEACH. But what I don't like about this kid is the inability to 'read a room'. What I mean by that is that he does not take into consideration the situation and place he's in, he just acts without thinking. That's not necessary a bad thing, but it's frustrating when a character who's in a dangerous place, full of demons, is attacking a potential ally instead of going after the demons (who he was after anyway, but for some reason decided to attack Tanjiro). I know that he loves fighting, but it doesn't mean that he should cross swords with everyone he meets, especially not in the time of danger. And I didn't like how little of caring he had about the little girl Tanjiro had been trying to protect.
But I find interesting that both of Tanjiro's meetings with his future companions started with a conflict (with Zenitsu over the girl he was trying to marry and with Inosuke over the little girl's wellbeing).
Anyways, the story ended up with Tanjiro seeing Zenitsu getting beaten up by Inosuke for protecting Tanjiro's box (where Nezuko is). It's not the best start of their friendship, by any means, but I know that things will be resolved quickly and these three will start their demon slayer adventure together. I cannot wait for what's to come, I'm especially anticipating the meeting with the Hashiras (I know that it's gonna happen soon)! ☺️
