Granted, I'm a bit biased, but I found Mother Goth Rhymes' richly illustrated, laugh-out-loud poem parodies to be both delightful and subversive, perfect for creepy kids and adults alike. Spooky fun! MotherGothRhymes(dot)com

2024 re-read: I am now myself a goth mother, with a 1 year old daughter, and she herself picked this off the shelf and wanted to read it! She really enjoyed it, but I'm glad she doesn't understand most of the words. So we'll see if this will be suitable in the years to come.

Adorable book! I think all of these are nursery rhymes rewritten to something spooky, so you could totally sing them. The artwork is really good! This may not be appropriate for all children, but if they love spooky things, it's probably fine! This is great for any darkly inclined person.

feels like something that the Addams would read to their children as a bedtime story, so living for those vibes

I don't (ever) go for dark or macabre, but the clever rhymes and delightful illustrations had me reading them out loud to anyone within hearing. This book is perfect for the Halloweenophiles in your life.

Some of the rhymes are pretty morbid. Others are really funny. The drawings are great. I bought this with the thought that my high school students would love it. I was right.

Hilarious and so much fun! The art is beautifully creepy and the stories have the rhyming scheme you're used to so they flow right off your lips and startle you in their morbid hilarity!!

This is a wildly funny darkly humorous book, rewrites of original mother goose rhymes that we know and love. I would say not for children unless parental guidance is at hand. The art was great and creepy, and the rhymes were laugh-out-loud funny. Enjoyable read any day for those with darker humor. Would own a copy of this for my own library to re-read in the futre.

This is such an adorable and spooky little book, I loved every second of this! As someone who loves a dark and creepy aesthetic, this book is pure fun. And the illustrations are gorgeous! The little rhymes are so cute and really well written. If you have a kid that likes strange and unusual things, or if you yourself enjoy them, this little gem is perfect and one of a kind.

Fun and spooky rhymes with detailed and fantastic illustrations. My eleven year old daughter is obsessed with the macabre. She LOVED this book. We checked it out from our local library and she enjoyed it so much she has asked for a copy for Christmas. A great read if you like Goth books.

I love this book!!!!!! I came across it at a comic book store I randomly stopped at today. I knew it was coming home with me the moment I saw it. I read it shortly after I returned home and fell in love. The rhymes are terrific and the illustrations are amazing. I need more of this!!

Delightfully creepy retold nursery rhymes for older kids and up. Read this if you’re a fan of Edward Gorey or Tim Burton.

Wonderfully creepy art. Some of the rhymes were forced & disappointing, while others were very clever. Adding "dead" to everything got a little old.

A fun dark parody of our favorite nursery rhymes alongside the amazing art of Kaz Windness. A must read for anyone with a dark soul and a vacant spot atop their coffin-shaped coffee table.

I really loved the style of art and the clever rhymes. However, it's not all that kid-friendly, so I feel like I enjoyed it more on an adult level.

Young Mother Goth,
When she wanted to go,
Would ride through the air
On a gigantic crow.

This grim and gruesome collection of 30 nursery rhymes all have a goth theme or goth slant to them.
Most are patterned after traditional Mother Goose Rhymes. The themes in these adaptations, however, are not appropriate for young children. Rather, their morose humor will appeal to older childrens, teens and young adults up to about age 25 who are looking for a sweet treat that is twisted.

An example rhyme:
Sinking sinking little car,
How I wonder where we are.
Underneath the water deep.
Gently rocking me to sleep.
Sinking sinking little car,
Should have taxied from the bar.

The macabre black and white mixed media illustrations are reminiscent of the works of Edward Gorey and add to the dark humor of each. Kaz Windness is known in the comic book world for her creepy and spooky works. Warning: these rhymes are the things nightmares can be made of...

Recommended for ages 8-up.

I was endeared by these dark takes on the old traditionals. Probably not story-time appropriate, but for an angsty baby goth, ya!
