Another great romantic suspense from Jane Blythe!

Two begins on the Everette family's estate, with the murder of Brooke Mariano. The case seems unsurprising at first glance - Brooke is pregnant, and the father of her child is unknown - and so the detectives assume that this is what the murder was centered around. Until a member of the Everette family turns up dead. And another. And another. Every night, a new family member is found dead, and as the clock starts counting backwards, Detective Ryan Xander knows he has limited time. When he meets Sofia Everette, possibly the only person he can get answers from, he realizes that the story may be much more twisted than he had anticipated, and that he must solve it, before Sofia becomes the murderer's next victim.

The writing style was just as engaging as the first, and I thought that the characters were extremely well done as well. I especially enjoyed how three-dimensional Sofia was and how realistic she seemed. Throughout the story, Sofia seemed to exemplify so much internal conflict, whether it was about falling in love or about the meaning of family.

The plot of Two was definitely more complex than I had expected, and what I love about it is that it really displays the situation as one that is three-dimensional and layered. Rather than having a simple mystery surrounding the binary between good (victim) and evil (perpetrator), Two reveals a situation in which things are not so black and white.

This time, however, I felt like the reveal was much less surprising, and since it came much earlier in the book, there were times where I felt like I was already at the falling action even though the climax seemed to come later. While I do like the employment of dramatic irony in terms of the identity of the murderer, part of me wishes that the mystery had been kept a little longer so that the suspenseful tone could have existed more in the book.

Overall, I would say that the first one in this series is still my favorite due to the plot and tone quality, but I still really enjoyed this story and I am looking forward to reading book three and seeing how it all ties together!

I’ve always really loved Jane Blythe’s work, and I’m finally getting around to leaving a review for this one. This series is dark, gripping, and absolutely not for the faint‑hearted, and Two continues that tone with a chilling, emotional punch.

Sofia Everett is a character who gets under your skin. Shunned by her own family and battling a mysterious illness, she’s already fragile when the murders begin. Watching her step into the spotlight as the only Everett willing to talk to the police is heartbreaking and brave all at once. Her childhood dreams becoming the key to stopping a killer adds this eerie, unsettling layer that Jane writes so well. And when the truth finally comes out… it’s the kind of revelation that changes everything you thought you knew about her, her family, and the darkness they’ve been hiding.

Detective Ryan Xander is easy to fall for. He’s been quietly watching Sofia from afar, and when the case brings him into her life, his feelings deepen fast. But between Sofia’s health, the danger closing in, and his own insecurities, their connection feels fragile in a way that makes you root for them even harder. He wants to protect her, but he also has to face the possibility that he might lose her before they ever really get a chance.

This story is intense, emotional, and full of the kind of twists that Jane Blythe is known for. She doesn’t shy away from the darker sides of humanity—there are mature themes and triggers here, so readers should tread carefully—but she balances the horror with heart, resilience, and characters who feel painfully real.

If you love thrillers that keep you guessing, crime stories with depth, and mysteries that hit you right in the chest, Two is a powerful, haunting addition to the Count to Ten series. Jane Blythe continues to prove she’s a master at weaving suspense, emotion, and raw human vulnerability into every page.

And to think, all this time I thought my family could be the poster children for the word dysfunctional. You will not believe what goes on behind closed doors in the prominent Everette family. Tyrannical control, brutal coldness, a lack of respect for love, humanity and anything that doesn’t directly benefit the family, from the patriarch on down, almost everyone has a secret, some more deadly and perverted than others, but none as diabolical as the ones belonging to the murderer working overtime to assure that the poisonous blood of the Everettes washes down the drain from the Medical Examiner’s table.

Someone is picking off the Everettes one by one and the police have no idea who it is. What they do uncover are decades of rape, murders for fun and a family too afraid to speak out if the patriarch says no. In a twisted game of musical genes, grab a score card and try to keep up as this family stops just short of making everyone their own grandpa.

Only the beautiful and frail Sofia has a heart instead of a stone in her chest, but she is sickly, and believes she is dying. It is that willingness to believe the best in people that sparked more than a professional interest from the detective assigned to investigating the untimely deaths of her family. Ryan finds Sofia amazing, but his own past makes him terrified to take a chance on love with this wonderful woman. Then again, if he can’t keep her alive, it won’t matter.

Two by Jane Blythe is a complicated and thrilling ride giving the Grim Reaper overtime in collecting the dark family souls. As the tally goes up and the remaining family member numbers go down, the prime suspect changes as each bread crumb is dropped. Jane Blythe has nailed this one as one family, who seems to be afraid of their patriarch silently seethes with contempt against every other member and some of them even have extremely disturbing appetites usually only heard about on the late news. Prepare to not like most of the characters because they seem to have little value as human beings. Be surprised at the twists and turns and dark secrets revealed as those skeletons in the closet are uncovered by an unlikely source. I only wish I could have known Sofia as a healthy and vibrant woman! Fabulous reading, lots of twists and slimy characters who just may have deserved the end they received.

I received this copy from Jane Blythe in exchange for my honest review.

After finishing One, I was eager to dive into Two to see what happened next in Jane Blythe’s Count to Ten series. I had been hoping things would pick up where the prior book left off, continuing the storyline, but this one was separate from the first.

At first, such left me disappointed. I need to know what came next for the characters in the first book, I need answers to my lingering questions. Although my disappointment remained, I did grow curious about this one. I did not enjoy it as much as the first book, but it did have me powering through it.

As with the first book, the mystery aspect of this story was really interesting. There were some elements I could not buy into – some details were a bit too farfetched, some aspects did not follow police procedure, some elements seemed to be missing to keep people guessing – but it did not stop me from being curious. There was plenty to uncover, and I was happy to keep reading.

Also like the first book, I did not buy into the romance with this one. It felt flat, I did not feel anything for the relationship, and it annoyed me a little bit. In some ways, I think this would have done better as a suspense, not a romantic suspense.

All in all, an enjoyable second book. I did not enjoy it as much as the first, but it has me curious about the rest of the series.

Jane Blythe writes of serial killers and grotesque murders and I LOVE it.

Brooke Mariano is a pregnant teenager with dreams of wealth and leisure and her life is snuffed out like a candle, all to keep a secret, a secret I want to be revealed and the guilty party to pay for it.

I like that Ryan’s interest in Sophia began before they were shoved together because of the murder. Her mysterious illness may seem to make her weak, but she is strong enough and determined enough to live on her own, disinherited by her rich father because she has a mind of her own. I love strong, independent female protagonists, and Sophia is spot on. I hate men that act like dictators and feel women are supposed to fall in line.

The body count grows and so does the suspect list. I love to be kept guessing and Jane Blythe is very good at doing that. Was someone in the family eliminating other members? If so, why? Most of them are wretched, miserable, pathetic excuses for human beings, so, in my book, none of them would be missed. LOL

Sometimes those surrounding the killer are worse than the killer himself.

When they go into the room…

Jane Blythe’s use of misdirection is very well done.

I can easily visualize events as they unfolded, as if a Criminal Minds episode was playing in front of me. It is so easy to picture Sophia…in a wheelchair, hunched over, looking at photos…But…I do hate a character I am growing very fond of making such a predictable and stupid error. Now, I am pissed at her. Is it my personal feelings keeping these ratings at fours, where others would rate them higher? It’s up to you to decide.

The book has an ending , but Three will bring One and Two together in a reunion I do not want to miss. I can hardly imagine where Jane will take it and I am rubbing my hand together in glee just thinking about it.

Amazing...once again!

Two kept me enthralled just as One did. I couldn't seem to stop reading and just had to know what would happen next. Jane Blythe does a beautiful job of painting the world around you, dragging you into their lives and sitting on the edge with them. At times I did get frustrated with Sofia and her reactions, but I also was understanding her reasoning behind it all.
Can't wait to read the next book that merges these great characters together!

I wasn't sure when I started this book whether it would contain the same detectives but just like it had a new mystery storyline, it also contained new detectives. The book begins with a young girl Brooke who wanted to be a "Somebody" instead of a smalltown farm girl. She ran away from home when she was fifteen. Now fifteen years later, she is heavily pregnant and goes to knock on the door of the father's house. She ends up being murdered, and the baby ripped from her womb. As the police turn up to investigate, they learn that this is one mixed up and an evil family. The Everett family have dark secrets that they don't want to be aired out in the open. The only one willing to talk is Sofia - the nicest and the black sheep of the family. She also happens to be the one whom Detective Ryan Xander is in love with. As more family members start dying, it is clear someone is targeting the Everett family but for what reason. As the book goes on, we are soon left with a few members of the family including Sofia, Isabella and Logan Everett the third. Can Ryan save Sofia before she falls victim and when all is revealed what dark secrets will be leaked from the Everett Manor and who is the killer ? I have to admit I had a small inkling about halfway through the book, but the ending still left some WTF twists for me. If you enjoy fast-paced mystery novels, then the Count to Ten Series by Jane Blythe are the books for you.

I received this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. This is the second book of this series and it can be read as a stand alone.

The book starts off with Brooke Mariano and her childhood. She lived in poverty and eventually ran away from home. When she is murdered, it isn't clear who murdered her but it is clear who ever it was took the baby.

This book is about the Everett family and the Detectives know one of the them is responsible for the murders but they aren't clear which one it is. Detective Ryan falls head first for Sophia, the only Everett that is a decent and caring person. Will he be able to save her before it is too late.

Find out in this awesome book, as always this author keeps you gripping the pages until the very end to find out who the murderer is.
Book Blurb:
Before the sun rises, another will fall.

When Brooke Mariano is found murdered on the grounds of the powerful Everette family’s estate, it looks at first as though she may have been killed in order to keep the paternity of her unborn child a secret.

However, when another member of the Everette family turns up dead each night, it quickly becomes a race against time as Detective Ryan Xander and his partner try to discover which member of the family is the killer before the entire clan wind up dead.

Ryan’s only inroad to the secretive family is Sofia Everette. Shunned by her father for her refusals to obey him, and battling a mysterious illness, Sofia’s childhood dreams may be the key to saving her life and stopping the killer from exterminating the entire Everette family.

Initial thoughts:

Another great installment in a punchy, well-written romantic suspense series.

What I loved:

Once again, the author delivered an intricate plot with no shortage of scary, creepy, and oh-so-satisfying gore. This is definitely where Blythe shines the most. Without a doubt.

Now, since this is a romantic suspense and I'm a(n unconventional) romance junkie, let's talk romance, shall we?

While One had Xavier and Annabelle in the backseat as crime/suspense/mystery drove the vehicle like a speed demon, this book certainly gave Ryan and Sofia their turn in the spotlight. Gotta say I really enjoyed the development of both characters and the believability of their relationship. Really, reeeally enjoyed.

What left me wanting:

Well, everyone and their dog knows I'm a glutton for punishment so having the killer revealed at made my inner masochist a teensy bit sad. With that said, gaining that extra insight into the killer's mind post-reveal was a pretty darn good trade-off. My inner masochist can just suck it up, princess!

Final thoughts:

If you've read the first book then I urge you to read this ASAP. If you've not read the first book yet...

What the heck are you waiting for? Hup hup.

Talk about being born to wrong family, the Everett family would be that family, lol. The creepy crawly aspect of this story kept me intrigued but it was a little abrupt in how certain things unfolded but it worked for the book overall. I really enjoyed Ryan but Sophia was up and down for me at times. Looking forward to starting Three

Detective Ryan Xander is a police detective on a murder case. A woman is found on the grounds of Logan Everette II, a retired judge’s estate. The woman was Brooke Mariano, a woman who ran away from home at the age of fifteen because she never really felt like she fit in at home and wanted a better life. She’s now thirty-two and the mistress of several rich men, but she’s also pregnant by Logan Everette II and wants more than just money from him, she wants it all. She figured out at a young age that sex would get her money, so she used her body to get by after she ran away from home. Detective Xander is horrified by the scene in front of him when he shows up to the murder scent.

Logan Everette II a rich, powerful, ruthless, retired judge with a closet full of secrets surrounding his family. He has five children, but the secrets around these children and their lineage will destroy his family. He expects everyone to obey his word and he does not like the word no from anyone.

Ryan Xander’s past was heartbreaking and I was so hopeful for him and Sofia. Sofia Everette is the fourth child in the Everette family, and she is the most different from the rest. She’s sweet, caring, and loving, but she also stands up the Judge for what she believes in. Ryan’s attraction to Sofia began before this case, but he doesn’t think he will have a chance to meet Sofia or that his feelings will ever be reciprocated.

This book was full of suspense, twists, and secrets that destroy lives. It was intense and a great story to read. The first chapter pulled me in and kept me prisoner until the final word. I was simultaneously appalled, intrigued, sad, and hopeful for the characters in this story. I loved this story. I highly recommend it to readers who enjoy a story full of suspense and twists. This book really delivers in that sense. The characters are a mix of good and bad. I give this story a 5-star review and am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Detective Ryan Xander and his partner Paige Hood have just been sent to murder scene where the unborn baby has been taken out of the mother’s womb and the mother, Brooke Mariano brutally murdered.
The murder has taken place at the home of Judge Logan Everette II and it seems like almost everyone is a suspect. Soon more murders are occurring at the home and those remaining seem to be hiding something.
Sofia Everette is one the judge’s daughters who does not live at home after being disowned by her father after not marrying the man he picked out for her. As she watches members of her family being killed will she be next?
Can Ryan and Paige take down the killer before anyone else is killed and will they discover the family’s darkest secrets?
Wow – this was another great book in this series and I really look forward to more.
I was shocked from the first murder down to the last and I was shocked at how cold the murderer was and how everything was so well planned out.
I thought Ryan and Paige were great detectives and really trying to do their job, which was difficult with Judge Everette. He was so difficult and you could tell right from the beginning how many secrets he had within his family.
Sofia was awesome but I was very worried about her and how sick she appeared to be. She really wanted the murderer caught and I was frustrated at what her father did to silence her.
This family had so many dark secrets and I was so shocked at what started to be revealed and how twisted certain things ended up being. That being said I was so impressed with the author’s ability to create such a web of craziness and horror.
I had figured out who the killer was before it was revealed but I was not disappointed in the least as I needed to know what was behind the reasons for the killings and I was not disappointed.
I look forward to more in the series! - By Rebecca

Sofia Everette may be physically week, as she’s bound to a wheelchair because of an unknown illness, but she’s mentally strong and capable. This causes her domineering father to disown her. After a woman’s body is found on the families estate and someone starts picking off members of the Everette family, Sofia must dig deep to figure out the killer’s motive before more die.

This is a dark one, indeed. And the list of suspects is large, as most of them could be from the Everette family itself. A tribe of entitled sycophants, not one of them is worthy of the title, human. They’re all capable of murder and have motives. Talk about a perverted, dysfunctional family.

Sofia is intriguing. She’s not physically strong, but she has a sharp intellect and a fierce determination to be independent. But will that be enough to save her as the killer gets closer?

Used to seeing the darkest sides that humanity has to offer, seasoned Detective Xavier Montague is tested as he races to catch the killer while the bodies pile up.

Brace yourselves for impact as the author deftly drops you down the rabbit hole, has you stumbling in the dark, and finally releases you back into the light with a thrilling finale.

I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.

If you think you have a dysfunctional family, well then evidently you haven't met the controlling, diabolical, elite Everette family. What goes on behind their closed doors is enough to make your skin crawl. Things you are forbidden to speak about that could hurt your family's reputation.  Someone has a vendetta against Everette's, killing them off slowly one by one.

Sophie is the only member of the Everette family that has the courage to speak to Detective Ryan and Detective Paige about her family. Her father has disowned her since she became independent and fierce. Due to her illness, her father also insists that she delusional.

For a year Ryan has been captivated by Sophie but would not approach her thinking she had a boyfriend. There is a strong chemistry between them.

Once again the author has blown me away with her creative talent and imagination.

Can't wait for next installment!!!

Betrayal, rape, murder, and hell that's all within one family. This group is governed by a stern dictator who doesn't want his family name tarnished. But something happens and all of a sudden the family is in danger and being picked off one at a time. Dirty laundry doesn't begin to cover the deeds of this family and all they have done. This family takes dysfunctional to a new level. When they are judged and convicted in the eyes of one there is only one that might be spared and she has Officer Ryan's eye and protection if she listens that is. This is a fast paced, action filled read much easier to navigate than the first book in the series and with just as many surprises. From what I have seen this author likes her action fast, dirty and spares no one in her wake. And from the sneak peek I can't imagine where she is going from here.

This is a really good murder mystery book. It kept me reading to the end. I would have never guessed who it turned out to be. Brooke was a 15 year old runaway who got pregnant by a man in the very wealthy Everette family. She thought that this was the way to make easy money and have someone take care of her. How wrong was she! Come forward sixteen years and she is pregnant again. This time someone murders her and cuts the baby out. The finger is pointing towards the males in the Everette family. Sophia Everette is scared because someone is killing her family. Ryan is one of the detectives on the Everette case. He has seen Sophia at charity events before and now that he has met her all he wants to do is protect her. Can he solve the murders before they come for Sophia? I am hooked on this series and can't wait to read the next book.

This book is INSANE and the family is even more intriguing. Ryan Xander has his work cut out for him when a pregnant lady is turned up dead with her baby missing. It does not help things that the family in question is actually the one that his crush belongs to. His crush that doesn't know he exists.

The story line is extremely intriguing and attention grabbing. Even when you are told who is the one committing these horrific murders it is more of a 'are they going to get caught' and how and when kind of thing.

All in all the book was interesting, intriguing, attention capturing with a splash of romance!

I received an ARC in return for my honest review!

Jane Blythe writes such great serial killer mysteries, that keep my coming back for more
I was excited to dive into Two, after finishing One, and Jane did not disappoint.

Someone is killing off the Everett family. And no one is talking to the police except Sofia Everett, the oldest daughter who is suffering from a mysterious illness.
Her father is a well respected Judge, and he tells the police to pay her no mind.
Detective Ryan Xander is curious about the quiet & beautiful Sofia.
He finally gets to meet her after a murder at her families estate.
This book was full of mystery & surprises that keep you guessing and wanting more.
I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read Three!

This is Book #2 in the Count to Ten series. Each book has been getting better and better. I thik the Judge got what he deserved. It is called Karma. He did not teach his children the right from wrong. Beautifully written with well developed characters. I can not wait to read book #3, Three.

I really couldn't put this book down and have read it non stop into the night. Talk about a twisted family! One by one, the Everett family is being killed off, but who is guilty? The author was extremely clever by revealing the killer fairly early on, however, this didn't detract from the story, it only opened up more questions, and I was desperate to find out why. Sofia and Xavier made a great couple, and I look forward to following their story in subsequent books. This book really is a page turner and I recommend it highly.

I thought the first book was intense this one is worse! Wow the Everette family is completely chaos! Dark secrets hide but the judge doesn’t want his family to speak to the police. But when deaths keep happening no one is safe. Detective Ryan is on the case and for years he’s had a crush on one of the members of the Everette family. Can Ryan keep Sophia safe? Brooke Mariano is found murdered with her baby removed from her body. She is connected to the Everett family which is one messed up family. The family members start getting killed after Brooke is found and the detectives try to figure out who the killer is before the whole family is killed. Many twists and turns with skeletons being revealed as you pull back the layers of the family dynamics. This story kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next.

Enjoy reading but not solving the crime before the end.

Twisted suspense.

Book 2 of the series and by God it was twisted. My head was spinning trying to figure out who patented what Everett. Like the first book, I liked Sophia and Ryan, their characters actually kept the story alive. Also like the first book I wanted more from the ending. I'm hoping we get that from book 3 since it is a series of books.
