It’s been six months since I died on Earth and was brought to the Kingdom of Craesti. In that time, I’ve made friends, gained a family, and begun learning how to gather and channel Aether, a.k.a. magic. I started attending Azyl Academy, the premier magic school of the city, after it was discovered that my talent was exceptionally high. I am learning Alchemy, Inscription, and how to fight, all with the goal of expanding the Kingdom and keeping the populace safe.

It hasn’t all been smooth sailing, though. I made an enemy of one of the local noble Clans, and just survived an assassination attempt thanks to one of the guardian Beasts of the Academy I have a budding friendship with. Now I have to recover from my injuries and continue to advance. Coming soon will be our ranking tournament, where we will compete within our tiers to see who is the strongest. After the tournament, we will be divided into teams and go on an expedition into the Great Western Forest to cull Beasts and harvest rare plants. Throughout all of this, though, my focus is on getting stronger; to be ready for the calamity I was warned about by Darkness, the deity that brought me here. I just hope I have enough time.

This is second in a isekai story that builds up over the course of its books. Read them in order.

You should know what to expect of this, at least for the most part. Aiden continues to excel at school, impressing everyone and learning all the things. It's a total power fantasy and Vines leans into that ruthlessly.

I found it interesting that what little romance there is looks like it's headed to harem territory. There's nothing certain, but at least one of his potential interests has explicitly stated that her class is used to sharing and she wouldn't mind seeing where it goes even though he's kind of torn between two women.

Less interesting, and a little off-putting is the development near the end that pulls this into a more common story type as .

Anyway, I'm going to go with three stars for this one though it's nearly exactly like the first story in the ways that matter. I suppose it's the final event that makes me less willing to round up.

A note about Chaste: Though he has feelings for two women, and makes some forays towards them both, there isn't any actual romantic progress in this story that would lead towards anything explicit. So it's very chaste.

Disappointing.

What started as a nice slice of life series became a how to drug manual. There was more talk of pills and powders than anything else. This book lost it's way and never recovered.

This book is awesome. As long as you like progression books, training, great magic and development then this is a great book. The characters are the one thing that aren't great. They are written kind of simple: all or nothing type characters. Aiden is the most hardworking perfect person. Not much complexity to him or any of the supporting characters. That is fine though since that is not really the focus of the book. It is just a warning. If you are looking for a strong character driven story, then this isn't the one for you. If you are looking for OP main characters that keep doing more and more awesome things, then this one is for you. I loved it.

(Love how could rent before brought ace author. )

Excellent carry on to this series for most part was divering weather to give 3 or 4 stars so go 3 and half as not quiet as good as first one in my opinion but still good read.

For one not enough explanation about taking pills and there effects or proses of when enhancing him not even sure if used them to be honest as kida skipped and these kind thing my faverate parts.
Seemed do above a lot for items and skills extra bit frustrating not using or even menchaning them and when did kinda skipped it sadly.

And lot of book seemed be him making and handing out powders too.

This one was as good as the first book in the series. After finishing that one I immediately started Chaos Rising. I finished it in slightly over a day. I'm going to have a hard time waiting for the third book to come out next year. Keep typing Chris!

3 Elements Preserve Us Stars

Chaos Rising is the second book in the Elemental Gatherers series by Chris Vines.

While this book still graners the same level of intrigue from, as I further delve into this world's secrets and mysteries. I do, however, find myself feeling verily disappointed to not have learned much at all in regards to the crux of Aiden's coming turmoil. That Vines only truly gleams, to us the readers, the beasts unusual behavior as an indicator of what is coming, has not been enough to assuage with this additional conclusion.

Excitement has started to return to my regard for this series, however, having read that minute hint with the end of this second book. And while I have read a spoiler into what will come, I only wish to know inevitably more.

All the more troubling the myriad of ways in which beasts have come to act and decimate the continent of Craesti in which Caleb now resides. To know the number that have already fallen, and wish there were some greater way in which to manifest the implements of which he knows that could truly push their entire civilization towards greater heights. If only a higher level of lesser cultivation knowledge was more easily widespread. Such a simple divergence from the current state of affairs, and a truly influencing one at that.

I wonder as to what "they" Darkness referred to, that is so like the Empire? What "their" goal is, in the calamity "they" plan to implement to the detriment of all. And further, what Darkness and Light were defending against when they introduced this continuation into the series.

As well, I know, for myself, that the enjoyment level would increase if there were only a mite more intimate drama factoring into the overall story. Especially in Aiden's regard. I simply wish to delve deeper unto the character development.

I said i would try the second book, and i got about 5 chapters in before DNF.

Following the previous book’s complete lack of meaningful conflict (i do not count him running away from a bully literally twice as conflict), rising action, AND climax (it just ended after a brief fight with an assassin that came out of nowhere), I thought we got done with the arduous setup and cardboard characters, onward to actual storytelling. Alas, it somehow managed to get worse.

The word choice and grammar is what finally ended it for me, i think I got my first glimpse of what it’s like to be a teacher facepalming while reading someone’s paper.

Here is an example of some of the strange stilted interactions where the dialogue reads like text messages and the whole interaction just doesn’t make sense. This is an excerpt from the first few paragraphs of chapter two, where our MC passes out only to be awoken by the actual headmaster of the whole school just popping into his room to quickly give him some sort of impromptu tutoring out of nowhere, and then abruptly leaves without the main character saying more than a word.

“A few hours later I awoke to a knocking on my door. “Nevermore” I responded sleepily. Headmaster Glav entered and looked at me.

“Someday I’d like you to tell me where your strange sayings come from. But now it’s time for me to assist you in gathering at a controlled pace. Now, center yourself and prepare to gather as you did when you first started.”  I sat up and followed directions. She spent the next fifteen minutes explaining how to slowly reach out and form a vortex for Aether, pulling it in at a slow but steady rate.

“As you get better at this, you will be able to continue to gather using this technique just about continuously. Keep at it and finish healing up the bones in your hand. Counselor Stojka will be back this evening to check on your progress and work with you on healing the torn ligaments and muscles next. Keep up the hard work and you’ll be back in class by tomorrow afternoon, though only the lecture courses to start.”

Headmaster Glav then left, leaving me alone yet again.”

Many of the interactions are breezed through, with the unnatural sounding dialogue consisting of long blocks of sentences which require multi-part responses. It just completely lost the verisimilitude.

Note: I read books 1 and 2 together so they are getting the same review:

Don't waste your money, these writers have never even heard the term "story resolution" let alone understood it. I didn't pay much attenttion to where book 1 ended and book 2 began since I had book 2 loaded and ready to go. I do recall that book 1 didn't even remotely attempt to resolve a single story line. Book 2 goes like this: MC & co. encounter powerful beast in wilderness and run. Seek cover in cave. Cave turns out to be man made ruin. Slab of stone falls sealing MC & Co. in. STORY RESOLUTION NO WHERE IN SIGHT.

Authors who rely on cliff hangers to bring readers back are basically admitting that they don't believe they are good enough to bring readers back otherwise. DO NOT REWARD SUCH CRAPPY WRITTING. THIS IS A BOOK, NOT A WEB SERIAL.

I will admit that the page to page writing was okay, not great but good enough for three stars if the writers had actually told a story.

A fun addition to the Elemental Gatherers series. If you liked the first one, this one won't disappoint.
Pros
-The MC continues to develop and grow at a measured pace (starting to get OP, but still reasonable)
-A larger view of the rest of the world created by the author
-Action sequences that keep the reader engaged
Cons
-still some editing issues that you wouldn't expect in a second book
-some of the relationships feel shallower than they should be (not a big part of the story, so it can be pretty easily ignored)

Mind-numbingly boring. The MC is a cardboard goody two shoes character with his cardboard villain noble antagonist along with their cardboard no personality friends. Living in a cardboard fantasy world with a cardboard magical system being driven by a cardboard plot.

Don't read this, if you want fantasy slice-of-life there are better choices. If you want xianxia/cultivation there are better choices as well. This, calling this bland is a disservice to all cookie-cutter characters.

Great second book, but...

I have to say this book is fantastic. It's well paced and well written. There are several plot threads that make sense and work well together.
BUT...
The only issue I have is that 50-60% of the book seems to be training montage while the rest is dialogue and a couple good combat sequences. I understand a setup arc before the main plot moves forward but this seems a bit excessive. That being said this isn't necessarily a bad thing. So 5 stars

A bit better than the first

But there is still a taste of MarySue. It’s also a bit pedantic. A lot of ‘cycle, eat, alchemy, cycle, eat,...’ that gets very repetitious, even as the MC progresses.

Still gonna keep reading. Not the worst wuxia I’ve read. The simple fact I am continuing to read says this is actually decent.

A few typos and misplaced words: ‘overhang’ instead of ‘overhand’.

Not impressed

There is no character in this series seems like a diary written by an extremely unimaginative teenager. Not to be disparaging Chris but just because you like training arcs in books doesn't mean you have to fill your story with it. Try a little more variety in your story put a little soul in it.

This is so fun!

Good stuff! Really enjoying the story and the progression of the mc. The magic and alchemy and inner development are very cool. Liking the way he's growing in leadership and those around him.

Midscene Cliffhanger for the L

The first book was good and only *sort* of ended on a cliffhanger, a more traditional one, so I went on to book two. Book two ends in a midscene cliffhanger. Disrespectful to the reader. Cheap marketing ploy. Automatic one star.

Fast paced page turner with interesting characters that you can instantly root for. It's better than the 1st book and I definitely can't wait for the 3rd one.

Worse than the first book. Due to a certain situation, I felt obligated to read this ... I manage to reach the end, cringing every page.

As a reader, I can only hope that Vines writes, "managed," at least a few dozen times a chapter. Vines is one of the most repetitive writers I've encountered, so if you want to hear the same statements over-and-over, these are your books!

The MC is still an annoying priss == even more so. It hurts to know that the MC is supposed to be a 23 year old military cadet that was engaged to be married ... but behaves and shares the characteristics of a 12 year old! Would it really be possible to be that naïve and stupid about everything?! He seems to have some sad ideas about puberty too! I feel they're sad for him, as he must be the most miserable 23 year old man that ever liked a girl.

Just how bad was this book? The MC is constantly breaking bones and at one time even has his fingers bitten off! Does this affect him? Slow him down? NO! He compares himself to Luke Skywalker and REALLY goes about the rest of his day as if nothing untoward had even happened. Luckily for him, by book 2, they can regrow appendages.

Read this corn-sugar idiocy only if you're 12 or younger ... or share the same level of intelligence as Joe Biden.

So Enjoying This Series!

My experience with academy novels is that either they're really good - engrossing, believable, make comments on culture and society, each book advancing story and themes; or, they're completely insipid, time wasting dreck that feel like reliving the worst of HS all over again. Fortunately, this series is the first one. The MC was a goody two shoe, bleeding heart man of the people before he got truck kunned and he stayed that way in his new life. I really like Aiden, MC, but sometimes he seems too good to be true. That said, he's a great character and the many other students, faculty, and townsfolk are well constructed secondary characters with full back stories.
It is a bit black and white with a clear good guy and bad guy who don't seem to have any shades of gray which detracts from the realism of the story but ultimately hasn't detracted from my enjoyment. It does place this firmly in YA and younger YA at that though.
I would have rated this a four star for the b\w characters except the writing, world building, and character builds are so well done. So, if you can push the lack of gray to the back of your mind, I think you'll really enjoy the series.

I don't know if it's me, but this feels far different in tone that the first book.
He seems like that annoying kind of happy that makes you want to punch something.

I don't really know if I should continue this series. Not only did the author end the book on a cliffhanger, which reflects poorly on his writing skills and his ability to engage and keep the reader, but he also definitely changed the tone (and in part the protagonist) of the book.

Maybe you can use the excuse that the protagonist is now in a younger body, so the hormones are affecting his mind, but I'm not certain that explanation will fly.

I will see if I read a sequel or not later.

With Aiden having no memory must learn harder work harder to make up the difference lost .

Caleb reborn as Aiden takes a test when arriving at a certain age to show his talents an strengths in magic an if strong enough can attend the local academy an learn to harness his talents an strengths an graduate working for the city and kingdom . But before all that he must prove himself first capable of enduring the challenges he will face on a daily basis an maybe make some friends along the way .recommend reading excellent series .

I enjoyed the book, but since there are only 3 books... i feel like... ohh my God this is going to end fast... since they feel like Wuxia Novels but Wuxia novel have hundreds or even more then a thousand chapters, but these books have soo little chapter that i fonah the books in a couple of hours.. not days.... and Wuxia novels normally get new chapter every day or at least 3 timed a week, but books take months or years....

If you're just looking for a fun little story, this book is not too bad. However, if you're looking for Epic Fantasy and good writing then you'll probably be disappointed. I enjoyed the references to recent popular Epics like TWoT series and others but as someone else mentioned, there is WAY too much focus on making drugs in this book and not enough character development.

Really enjoy Aiden as both Crafter and Hero, I always enjoy a Tale with characters I can admire. Builds both exciting adventure and fascinating cultivation techniques. Excited to read next book and find out more about danger arising. Thanks for a wonderful read.

It seems I’m making a habit of devouring multiple books a day. Just can’t help it. Love the story and characters.

As the title says this is a review for Kindle Unlimited and as such is a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis.
