Ooh, I really enjoyed this! Foremost was a delightful story and a wonderful continuation of The Lost Princesses medieval romance series. Friends to lovers is one of my absolute favorite romance tropes, and Foremost did it so well. It’s currently my favorite in the series.
This was such a lovely story about the journey and adventures Maribel, one of the secret lost princesses, embarks on along with her friend, Edmund, who’s secretly loved her since childhood and has vowed to protect her with his life. Along the way they encounter all sorts of obstacles as the king’s men pursue them—most notably their descent into a labyrinth full of booby traps and a dragon—experience a lot of growth, draw closer to God, and fall in love. It was both a thrilling adventure and an adorable romance.
I absolutely fell in love with Edmund. He was so sweet, loyal, patient, intelligent, and had the most fascinating ability to communicate with animals, which added a wonderful element to this delightful story. He was the perfect hero whose love and undying devotion for Maribel was so sweet, deep, and unconditional, even when he didn’t believe his feelings would ever be requited. I loved watching Maribel gradually realize not only his feelings but that her own for him were deeper than that of a friend.
I really liked Maribel as well. She had such a good heart, incredible compassion, and admirable aspirations to be a nun and healer. Although she stubbornly clung to that path as the only future she could possibly have for a bit too long, I did love her growth as she discovers not only other opportunities for herself, but that she’s able to find a path that allows all her aspirations to come true, including being with dear Edmund. I also loved the message that accompanied her growth—of taking our God-given gifts and using them the way He intended.
The romance was not only incredibly sweet, but the faith message was utterly beautiful and woven seamlessly throughout the story. I loved how both Maribel and Edmund learn that God will take their individual desires to accomplish His plan and work everything out in the wonderful way only He can; the plans we have for ourselves pale in comparison with the perfect plan that God has for our lives. So beautiful.
Overall, Foremost was a lovely and romantic medieval adventure, definitely one of my favorites by Jody Hedlund. I’m eager for the final installment in this fun series.
