It’s a very special day in the Land of Ooo: Fionna the Human’s birthday! To surprise her, Prince Gumball and Marshall Lee have Cake distract Fionna with an adventure as they prepare the biggest surprise party in history. But when Prince Gumball’s experimental serum turns Fionna’s birthday cake into a monster, everyone must work together to save the Candy Kingdom...and maybe a friendship, too! Join writer Kate Sheridan (Fallow Time) and artist Vivian Ng (Nickelodeon The Legend of Korra - Turf Wars) on a brand-new adventure in the incredible world of Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time.
THIS WAS SO GOOD! The Prince Gumball/Marshall Lee scenes were beyond what I was hoping for. So cute and angsty— I need more! The art was really cute too, and close enough to the actual show art. I liked that this didn’t have an “and then the Ice King finished telling the story” ending too; I like to think of Fionna and Cake as somewhere in the multiverse, not Ice King fanfic! And this really felt like a genuine AT story, just with the genders swapped. I highly recommend this is you’re an AT fan and/or you’re a PG/ML shipper. 5/5 stars.
Very sweet and fun, just like Adventure Time should be! The plots running parallel to each other were well done (plus I’m a sucker for a surprise party moment :3 )
This book was alright. It wasn't amazing, but it was still a fun read. It felt like a mediocre episode of Adventure Time. If that's what you're looking for, then you'll enjoy this book. Of course there are better Adventure Time comics out there, but this was fun for what it is. Don't expect too much of it, but don't expect too little of it either.
'Adventure Time with Fionna & Cake: Party Bash Blues' is short, but it packs in so much, with just the perfect amount of ingredients to make it work right, like the tastiest birthday cake you ever had as a child. It is so cute, funny, fun, entertaining, clever, and delicious, I want to squee!
There is a lot to 'Party Bash Blues' for a short "surprise" birthday party story, about celebrating Fionna's birthday in ways only she would love. It is not your typical Saturday morning cartoon birthday episode fare, but it's definitely to be enjoyed while stuffing your face with sweets in your pyjamas!
I don't want to spoil this "surprise" party, but one highlight I will point out is Prince Gumball and Marshall Lee's relationship, which is brilliantly done. There is absolutely positively something there, indicating their friendship will bloom into something more in the future, if it's not already happened, and they've finally admitted their feeling towards each other; these two butting heads, who, of course, like Princess Bubblegum and Marceline the Vampire Queen, clearly have a history together.
Fionna and Cake's relationship, their best friendship and sisterhood, and Cake's loving concern for and protectiveness of Fionna, is also extremely sweet.
Like all the food shown in the comic. The artistry! I want to eat every glorious meal, treat, snack, and cake in these pages!
Love the inclusion of Butterscotch Butler, and how the creators didn't lazily make her into a genderswapped version of Peppermint Butler. Creative touches like this are what make the whole franchise as popular as it is.
'Adventure Time with Fionna & Cake: Party Bash Blues' - it's exactly the sort of thing you'd want in a 'Fionna and Cake' story. Everyone and everything in it is so flooping adorable! It is a much-needed pick-me-up, for a good, uplifting adventure time, and for the fuzzy feels.
Hilarious, delicious, heart-licious, and seemingly effortless brain candy, I highly recommended it for fans.
If only it was more explicit with Gumball and Marshall Lee's homoerotic tension. It would have been perfect. Oh well.
Bubblegum and Marceline are canonically together and their ship name is Bubbline, but what is Gumball and Marshall Lee's ship name? Gumball Lee?
For more of my thoughts on this amazing kids' feminist action adventure comedy series (the comics, anyway; I haven't seen any of the cartoons for a long time, and I ought to), read my reviews of:
Of the various tie-in comics in the Adventure Time expanded universe, I think the most effective are the spin off series, each focusing on fan favorite characters who have a relatively limited time in the show itself, including the genderbent alternate reality interpretations of Fionna and Cake. In this last entry in the comic series after the end of the TV series itself, Party Bash Blues by Kate Sheridan and Vivian Ng, tells an engaging if quite sweet story (not too surprising when the main antagonist is a monstrous cake) that allows readers to spend more time with these characters, ending it all on a very sweet note.
This was just as rip-roaring, and adventure packed as a Finn and Jake outing. Join the fun as a girl and her cat battle both skeletons AND a possessed birthday cake.
The library ebooks offered this up to me on a sleepless night. If you can't get a good night's rest...visiting the Land of Ooo is a pretty good fallback distraction.
A cute story about a birthday party gone wrong or the best birthday ever, it all depends on how you look at it. Fun adventure with Fionna and Cake.
Nice artwork, fun story, and a good read. Nice message about friendship at the end as well. A sweet (literally) adventure story full of fun, suspense, and new friendships.
Cute book overall. This is pure Fionna and Cake and it's adorable.
