It's all fun and games...until someone wakes up dead.

Governor's daughter Jane Anderson is used to getting what she wants. When a girls' trip to Mardi Gras thrusts her into the arms—and fangs—of New Orleans' hottest vampire, he gifts her with immortality, super strength, and a complexion to die for.

There's only one tiny problem. Jane faints at the sight of blood.

When Ethan Devereaux meets Jane, his cold, lifeless heart learns to beat again. Convinced she's his late fiancée reincarnated, he turns her, claiming her as his own. But when Jane wakes up dead in Ethan's attic, she's loud, sassy, and downright ornery. He doesn't know if he should kiss her or stake her, but one thing's for certain…

She is so not his long-lost love.

But Ethan turned her, so he's stuck with her. Jane has three weeks to learn the ways of the vampire and get her license, or she'll be staked. If Ethan can't help her overcome her aversion to blood, his undead life might also be on the line.

Join the supes of New Orleans Nocturnes as they lighten up the darker side of the Big Easy in this fast, steamy romantic comedy.

“Fantastic. It’s just my luck to get turned into a vampire by an Edward Cullen wannabe who has Captain Jack Sparrow as his mentor.”

Okay, so I'll admit that my stupid ass brain judged the book by its cover *please don't hate me* and kept pushing it lower and lower in my tbr but I finally got my head out of my ass and decided to give this book a shot and, WOW!

In this book, we are introduced to Ethan and Jane. Jane is a travel blogger and has come to New Orleans with her best friend Sophia. These two are at a bar, too drunk to comprehend what's going on where they meet Ethan and Gaston, who are both vampires.

When Ethan first sees Jane, he is convinced that she is his dead fiancée, Vanessa. So he bites her and claims her as his own but what he doesn't expect the bumbling, lively girl who never stops talking and is a pain in the ass. Nevertheless, he soon starts hating his coveted silence and starts liking having her around.

This book was fantastic and I enjoyed it so much, especially the Twilight jokes in this book! These two were adorable together and I loved their banter. If you're looking for a short and sweet book, low on drama with laugh out loud moments, this book is highly recommended!

I enjoyed this quite a bit, though not without some qualms. Ethan and Jane have good chemistry and I liked that they were a good balance for each other. Each character had an issue that bothered me, but the banter and little exchanges saw me through.

The biggest irritant to the story is Ethan's negative motivation* accompanied by inappropriate guilt and stupidity. Frankly, 25 years is just way too long to be so very emotionally constipated, so I found it hard to take him seriously as a brooding weasel hanging on in brood town getting his brood on. I did like how Jane turned that on him by calling him Edward, or worse, Eddie. He fully deserved the tweaking.

My problem with Jane was that she is stubborn to the point of idiocy. She's so convinced that she can control forces clearly out of her control that I was ready for someone to stake her in the sun to put her out of my misery at points. She goes weeks starving herself because she can't stand the sight of blood and doesn't seek help, doesn't even admit she has a problem and keeps diverting to stupid machinations and non-plans that made her look dumb and weak—neither of which she actually is.

When they clicked together, though, the two were outstanding. I loved that Jane took the time to find the kind heart and steady confidence in Ethan. And I liked that he found such delight in her finding her way in her new world and supported her exploring boundaries he hadn't considered might not be absolute or binding. They made a good team and that made it worth getting through the stupid bits.

I'm going to call this 3½ stars that I'm rounding up on the strength of their relationship in the end, but with the caveat that it's light, a little frivolous, and ties go to the funner.

A note about Steamy: There's a single explicit sex scene putting this on the light side of my steam tolerance. It's a bit "magical" because vampires or something, so it doesn't really play into their relationship very much and frankly, their emotional intimacy was already established by then so it was a touch gratuitous.

* Negative Motivations: I kind of hate that the term "negative motivation" isn't widespread, yet. Since it isn't, I'm going to save off this little jag to append to my reviews that feature the term. Jennifer Crusie blogged about it a bit back (or, if that link doesn't work, here's a cache of the original) and it changed how I understand story. The problem with the term is that if you've never heard it before, you'd assume it meant motivations that are harmful or immoral. Not so. What it refers to is motivations not to do something. The thing is that many of us are motivated to not do things for a lot of different, perfectly valid and reasonable, reasons. The problem is that in a story motivations to not do things are a huge drag on the plot—particularly considering the fact that most negative motivations are overcome by the character simply deciding they don't care any more (or, rather, that they do care and are now motivated to do the thing). So not only do you have a counter to action but you also have a situation where to overcome it, all a character has to do is change their mind. Which means eventually, the reader is rooting for the character to get over him/herself already and do the thing we want them to do. Conflict drives story. Conflict between a reader and a main character drives readers away from story.

Not my fang. Characters are too boxy - she’s spoiled and jarring and he is brooding and self-loathing. She’s more alpha than him, and he’s not really a gentlemen either. He’s just kind of there, much like a DrIver’s Ed instructor. Not sexy.

The dialogue gains a few giggles here and there, but it’s far from LOL. Cute at times, but mostly underwhelming and overflowing with scenes and words that try too hard.

The storyline is okay, but it’s not fleshed out - there’s no reasoning or support behind it. Feels like being thrown in a pot of goulash and having no idea what the ingredients are and where they came from. Like WTF would some foreign Barney come to NOLA to dish out laws and hand out the equivalent to of a vampire jaywalking ticket? Nonsense, and not in a funny way.

The blood aversion was clever plot point.

There’s ONE sex scene near the end, and it’s anticlimactic for the reader lol.

Didn’t buy the romance. Too much emphasis on her just being interested in his junk and him guilting over a dead fiancé. Banter is cute, but it doesn’t spark chemistry.

Missed the mark for me~ 1 1/2 stars.

“Fantastic. It’s just my luck to get turned into a vampire by an Edward Cullen wannabe who has Captain Jack Sparrow as his mentor.”

3.5 stars!

Okay GR friends, I know I am a complete hypocrite when it comes to these cartoonish covers. I absolutely HATE them on contemporary or historical romance, but for some reason they don't bother me in PNR. I fully admit to judging a book by its cover! **prepares to be stoned**

Nevertheless, this was such a fun vampire read! There were so many great Twilight jokes that were funny without feeling like they were just crapping on the iconic vampire series, and I loved it! My one big hang up here though was Jane. She just came off as such an entitled bitch, especially when Ethan was just trying to save her sorry ass, and that annoyed the crap out of me. I kept waiting for her big redemption moment, but I feel like it never happened so I never grew to like her. Ethan was such a great moody vamp, and I actually felt bad for him having to put up with her entitled attitude for all of eternity.

Other than that, the story was short, funny and enjoyable. I think I will continue this series at some point as the other books center around different couples ♡

This was so painfully cringe, and not in the good way.

If I could give this less than 1 star, I would. Every single character was entirely insufferable... Jane being the worst. I have never been more excited to complete a book...
This book has made me realize that learning to read may have been a huge mistake.

Jane is insufferable. At no point was I routing for her. She's a stereotypical stuck up girl who expects everyone to pay attention to her with zero redeemable qualities.
Ethan starts off interesting. Then he loses all depth and personality as soon as they kiss. We're told he was turned 25 yrs ago before modern apps yet starts off talking like he's from the regency era then switches up to completely tech savvy and modern?
The plot to this book is as follows: sad vampire finds hot woman and is no longer sad.
When we find out she faints at the sight of blood I was intrigued and read the whole thing purely to find out how they were going to work it out. Luckily when the man she's known for 5 weeks offers his life for hers, she figures it out and it's all fixed with 15 seconds left to spare. Shocking.
This book is a sad rip off of twilight. It had the potential to be a great idea. Vampires trapped by insane laws and the idea of permits to feed. And yet it lacked.
The only redeeming quality is Gaston. Gaston is scum of the earth. He knows it and is ok with it. He's consistent. Be like Gaston.

I couldn’t find the humour and didn’t enjoy this world.
Just not my reading pleasure, too trite trying to be funny. Didn’t resonate with me but others will love it.
Found Jane aggravating, Gaston weird and the friend Sophie annoying. Ethan was likeable if a bit whiny.
Not sure why Constable Watson was such a twit.
What happened to Sophie at the end, well, she was warned but still had a compulsive need about having sex with a werewolf for some reason.
Did like travelling around New Orleans, bought back great memories.
Won’t be reading the next book.

This was a short, entertaining read, though pretty weird at the same time.

The reactions our main girl had were pretty convenient for the quick execution of the plot, and some of these conversations were just silly, but it was entertaining.

I thought it would be more comedy, though.

License to bite is the first book in the New Orleans Nocturnes series By Carrie Pulkinen. This is the first book that i have read by Carrie Pulkinen and it holds true to the title it is full of romance and comedy. I loved the characters in this book Gaston and Ethan, Jane and her best friend Sophie. I thought it was a fun and super cute read. Jane's Character is use to getting what she wants and i feel is a little spoiled so when she comes across Ethan and he don't give her the time or day at first it was fun to read it unravel. I would really like to read more about Gaston and Jane. I look forward to reading book 2 in this series. Thank you Carrie Pulkinen for this amazing book and making me laugh.

In all honesty, I had a great time with this book. Was the main character Jane insufferable a lot of the times? Yeah. Was the book corny? Yeah. Was it the best vampire romance I’ve ever read? No.

But tbh I operate on vibes and the I was laughing out loud at certain moments and I genuinely enjoyed my time with this modern vampire romance, so the vibes were definitely there.

I would give it 3,5 instead of 4 if there was the possibility, but 3 seemed worse than what I actually thought about this book, so 4 it is! :)

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of "LICENSED TO BITE" This is such a different take on Vampire meets Human it's fun, hilarious, thrilling, what a creative storyline you just can't stop reading page after page of a very enjoyable read.
Jane Anderson is the governors daughter of Texas she has 4 brothers all very protective as well as her father so she and her BF Sophie head to New Orleans and Mardi Gras where she's thrust into the arms of the hottest Vampire in New Orleans Ethan Devereaux his sire is Gaston Bellevue.
Gaston is just to funny always drinking and calling Ethan a bore he lost the love of his life 25yrs ago and that's when Gaston turned him when he sees Jane he thinks she's his Vanessa reincarnated when a terrible accident happens he wants to turn her and Gaston tells him how.
Jane and Ethan's journey is one hilarious undertaking she's now Immortal but has an aversion to blood passes our when she sees it she is so feisty and talkative Ethan doesn't know if he should stake her himself so funny you have to get thus amazing read.
I definitely recommend to get this very well written story by Carrie Pulkinen so well worth the read with interesting, entertaining, fun characters so much happens in this story she only has so long to be trained to get her License to Bite or be staked.
I loved the chemistry and connection between Ethan and Jane I can't wait for "SOPHIE'S" story next "SHIFT HAPPENS" PHENOMINAL READ!!!!

What a terrible first read for 2024. I wanted to like this, being from south Louisiana but it was not to be. In one word - blech. Jane is horrible. I made it to 65% hoping for some redeeming character trait, but nope. Nada. Zilch. She’s a festering turd of a person and I found myself hoping she would die painfully. Ethan was just a bore, no more, no less. 🥱 Anyway, hopefully I can find a good palette cleanser to follow up on this snoozer.

The main character talks in third person. She is magically capable of charming elder vamps, is uncomfortably overconfident without any legitimate capabilities to back that up and has zero personality. But look at how quirky and relatable she is!! She faints at the sight of blood! Wow. Instant. Connection. No further character development or redeemable qualities needed.

I would rather read 1st grade book reports.

License to Bite is the first book in the New Orleans Nocturnes series by Carrie Pulkinen. It is a superb Paranormal Romantic Comedy, and definitely sets this series off to a fun start. I have read all Ms. Pulkinen’s books now and have loved them all. This book is a little less spicy and intense than some of her other work, as this has a cuter, sweeter, fun, and humorous look at the New Orleans paranormal world. That’s not to say that there wasn’t any excitement or some dramatic moments that added a little extra ‘zing’ to the story- because there was. Just the overall storyline felt a lot more light-hearted than her other books.
As I said, this is a paranormal romantic comedy- with vampires, witches, magic, vampire politics, and other supernatural elements- all set in mystical New Orleans.
Jane is a travel blogger who has come to New Orleans for her latest article. But things get a little complicated when she wakes up in an attic, a newly turned vampire- after a “selfie” moment goes horribly wrong.
Ethan is a broody, tortured soul- a vampire who has lost his ‘zest’ for ‘life’. When he sees Jane, he is convinced she is his lost fiancée, now reincarnated. He turns her, and soon discovers that there is no way Jane is the person he thought she was. She’s feisty, loud, and oh so frustrating.
But according to the vampire law, Ethan must help her learn to be a vampire. Teaching her their ways and helping her gain her ‘License to Bite”. Without it, she will be staked. They have three weeks to get her into shape. One small problem- Jane faints at the sight of blood- and blood is the very thing that vampires need to survive. MMMM, what will she do?
This is a quick and easy read full of humorous quips, banter, and antics. The romance is sweet, with just enough excitement to keep things interesting. I am definitely looking forward to book two- “Shift Happens”, which is Sophie’s story (Jane’s best friend).

Thank you, Ms. Pulkinen!

Oh my gosh this book is hilarious! Not just parts of it…all the way through~ Jane is the Governor of Texas daughter, has a black belt in karate and is VERY feisty. Her best friend Sophie and her decide to vacation in Louisiana during Mardi Gras. While there, they meet Ethan and Gaston who are both vampires. Ethan is very serious and still pines for his lost love. Gaston is his maker and a party animal. Ethan comes alive when he spots Jane because she reminds him of his lost love. They take them home and see them the next evening. Ethan glamour’s himself so she cannot see him and, in her drunkenness, gets hit by a car. On her deathbed, Ethan on impulse changes her…let the games begin! She awakens and will not stop talking, criticizing, is a smart mouth and will not take no as an answer. She is also extremely bossy and stubborn as well. She magically charms the Council and everyone around her! But, one thing, she has an aversion to blood…she sees it and passes out! She cannot bite a person to get her license! They have a limited amount of time to make it happen or she gets staked! What will happen? Can she do it? How will she squirm her way out of this one? I received this via Booksprout and am leaving a voluntary review.

Just a moment of peace
This book is sweet and sassy and down right hilarious. The author set up this new series perfectly with this couple, the way they interact and play off of each other. I love how original misconceptions blossom into the perfect HEA. The book is very fast paced and each character has an essential part to play making for an excellent read. I hope we don’t have a long wait for the next book, I can’t wait to see what happens with Sophie and her werewolf.

Sweet

Mostly I liked this story, my main issue being there wasn't a lot to it. I liked the characters but didn't really feel like I knew them. Also I don't see the point in mentioning Jane's overbearing family if we never see their reaction to what happens next. It was a cute story, but I'd like to have seen a little more depth to it.
