Lois Gladys Leppard was the author of the Mandie series of children's novels. Leppard wrote her first Mandie story when she was only eleven and a half years old, but did not become a professional author until she was an adult. Leppard has also worked as a professional singer, actress, and playwright. At one time, she and her two sisters, Sybil and Louise, formed a singing group called the Larke Sisters.
There are forty Mandie books in the main series, an eight-book junior series and several other titles. Leppard said that she could write a Mandie book in two weeks, barring any interruptions.
The eponymous heroine lives in North Carolina in the early 1900s, encountering adventure and solving mysteries with help from her friends, family, and pet cat, Snowball. These young reader novels are meant to teach morals as well as be fun and captivating stories to read. Leppard stated that her books contain "nothing occult or vulgar", and Mandie is depicted as a faithful Christian. The Mandie books often deal with issues of discrimination and prejudice relating to race (particularly with regard to the local Cherokee), class, and disability.
Lois Gladys Leppard based some of the incidents in her Mandie books on her mother's experiences growing up in North Carolina. The dedication in the first book is: "For My Mother, Bessie A. Wilson Leppard, and In Memory of Her Sister, Lillie Margaret Ann Wilson Frady, Orphans of North Carolina Who Outgrew the Sufferings of Childhood".

Third book of their holidays and this was a cracking good yarn revealing long hidden family secrets and giving lessons on forgiveness all with a little treasure hunt as well.
An entertaining read and a great deal off fun along the way as well as being genuinely moving.
Mandie is off back to school now, with another mystery in the air.

I know Mandie was getting annoyed with Polly for liking Joe, but I still thought they were friends. Since when is Mandie so annoyed with her for everything?

That’s my main complaint about this one though. I liked that when they measured things out, nothing was exactly the way they expected it to be…as it should be after so many years.

This is really good. The mystery aspect is great, and honestly the story was really heartwarming. One of the best Mandie books!

Mandie is out on another adventure. This time it’s finding a hidden treasure with a map that’s about fifty years old! Mandie, Sallie, and Joe set out to find the treasure but meet a lot of problems. First, the places on the map just don’t exist anymore. A rock pile, a persimmon tree, a rhododendron bush are nowhere in sight. And then there’s the mad man close by with his rifle on the ready. Will the three close friends find the treasure in time?

Genre: historical, adventure. For those 13 and under. Issues dealt with: death

This book as well as others in the Mandie Book series is more about adventure, than God. There might be only a few remarks, if at all, about Him. This book will merely entertain and won’t help in spiritual growth. This is the 9th book in the Mandie Book series.

I admit it: I am reviewing these books years after reading them. However, do not even suggest that I'm no longer qualified, that too many years have passed to remember. My battered and faded copies of these books testify to how many times I read them growing up and plots and entire passages are seared in my memory forever.

Snowball always ran away, Mandie always got in trouble, Uncle Ned always rescued her, and Joe and Tommy bristled at each other. I myself prefered Joe, but Tommy's cosmopolitan airs nearly tipped the balance a time or two. I recall- fondly and as though it were yesterday- my glee when Mandie went off to Europe, my disgust at the new baby, my delight in Mandie's wardrobe of sky blue frocks, my puzzlement at all her near escapes and handy school vacations, my terror during the daring midnight adventures. Ah me, to be young and silly again...

If I had written goodreads reviews at the age of eleven, all Mandie books would've received automatic five-star ratings and gushing descriptions. As an adult, I will honestly give them all three stars, except for my special pets. And if I ever have a little girl, I will buy her the entire set. Oh, and did you know there are more than forty books in the series by now? And I'm guessing Mandie never grows up, either.

0.5 stars.

I had three problems with this book.

1. It was so repetitive that it wasn't even funny. On character would say something and then two others would say the sme thing with different variations.

2. There was no clear storyline or plot. From the title you think that it is about some hidden treasure, but no, it is really about Madie's parents' gardener's and cook's love story. Then it changes again and it is about this friend's nephew going of to become a doctor.

3. The timeline was all wrong. Mandie is searching for the treasure her great aunt left behind and at the end it changes and is her aunt. Also, everyone they talk to is very old and yet Mandie's father died young and yet he is only eight years younger than Mandie's aunt. Another problem with the timeline, her uncle is older and yet was born after Mandie's aunt. Last of all they have a week to figure out this mystery before they have to go back to school. Two days later, they only have one more day. How on earth does a whole week pass in only three days? It doesn't, that's how.

All in all it was a very bad book and the only reason it is getting a half star review is the fact that her sentences weren't fragments.

We have read the Mandie books 1-9 so far. I read them to my girls before bed every night. There are at least 39 books in the series, and other specialty books that go along with the series, as well. They are a little dated, as far as terms used for certain races, etc., but it has given me great opportunities for history lessons and current events. They are great stories of the faith of a child in lots of life circumstances, and my girls just eat them up!!

This book and its companion were two of my favorite childhood stories. I used to love reading the Mandie Books as a child and every time we went to the Gift and Bible I would bug my dad to get me these books.

The Mandie books are fun Christian mysteries for children, but I still love reading them. Even though she doesn't age very quickly and seems to get far too many breaks from school during the year, she's a lot of fun.

I liked the mystery involved in the buried treasure hunt. I also liked hearing the history behind it & about Mandy's Aunt Ruby.
