Exactly as the title says. If you ever take a look at some "authentic" chinese cookbooks, the recipes are often full of ingredients that might be convenient if you live close to Chinatown. Most of us in the suburbs, though, are a bit out of range, and need to make-do with more mundane supplies. The point here is not to be making gourmet chinese food, but to get you cooking something new, and different, and build the basic skills towards making more complex dishes later.

This book goes over the basics... pot stickers, scallion pancakes, sauces, stir fries and other mixes...and gives you a basic springboard from which to venture out further. I like the "hardcore" chinese cookbooks, but, it's always best to learn the basics & get familiar with the accessible ingredients, before moving on to the more complicated dishes.

The downside: not a whole pile of cultural information in this book, this is a cookbook, not so much a literary ethnic adventure.

Looking forward to checking out her Thai and Vietnamese cookbooks.

This would be a perfect cookbook for someone who loves Chinese food but would prefer to make it at home. Everything is clearly explained and laid out. There are also plenty of photos, and the recipe format is clean and easy to read.

I made 3 recipes from this book and they were all really good. 3 stir fries and one cucumber dish. This book has brought me back to my wok.
