There's no escape from this room. Full of menace and suspense, it's an unputdownable thriller--and a paperback original!
Alissa, Sky, Cleo, and Miles just wanted something to do on a Friday night, so they signed up for an Escape Room. They have one hour to find clues, crack codes, and figure out puzzles. The Game Master told them they can always leave the game. But what if that's not true? What if the Game Master has no intention of letting them out?
3.5 stars! SUCH a fun and unique concept. It's about a group of friends who do an escape room, but the person running the escape room has no intention of letting them out😳😱. There's four main characters & we get all four of their povs which was fun. The different friends all have different secrets they're keeping too. It was fun to see how all of their secrets and friendships unravelled in the high stress situation of being held hostage.
It's a pretty short book (right around 200 pages) and I read it in a few fours. It's no mystery/thriller masterpiece but I think its perfect if you want a fun, spooky, and quick read! Would work great as a bookish pallet cleanser in between books too since it's so short.
I had an eye twitch the entire time I was reading this. Even the plot twists meant nothing to me. It took all my willpower to even skim past this book. Don't read this unless you enjoy stilted paragraphs, bland dialogue, and forgettable, flat characters. 100+ pages of "no thank you".
Well it's not ideal when by page 17, you are hoping some of the main characters will get murdered.
I think novellas from this author are useful to have in a high school library because of their length, and also because mystery thrillers are a high interest genre. There are enough twists and tension to keep an inexperienced Reader or reluctant Reader engaged, so definitely getting one for the library. For me, it felt really forced, way too angsty, and there was not nearly enough killing of annoying main characters.
I read through the reviews and what many people think of it was quite alarming, it was a fun short read, a book doesn’t have to be described to the tiniest brink to be good, and people have problems with the characters too, supposedly they are too bland.
Let me lay some stuff out, how much can a person really get into a book that takes place in a couple of hours while also not make the book feel like it’s dragging, and more on the characters, they had their differences and back stories , so the characters were completely laid out, we had four teenagers, all have secrets and a game master to run the show, how does one not absolutely love this book and the characters were far from bland, they each had so much to them, I was more sad on the fact we didn’t get more from some of them. It was a unique plot, I did enjoy it very much, it’s perfect for a quick read in and out, every book is written with a goal, this one wasn’t supposed to be a long inlayed book.
This book was told in a puzzle itself and I love a mind game, I sped through it in one sitting and also understood the characters well for such a short book, I personally enjoy a short adventure once in a while, my only negative remark would be there should’ve been more.
Actual Rating 2.5 Mint, Sky, Alissa, three best friends for a few years. Miles, Alissa's one-week-old boyfriend, who got some secrets to hide. They decided to go to an escape room, which is new in town. After entering, they realized maybe they are trapped there forever.
This book was short only 178 pages, and quick to read. There were several POV, which gave better insights into characters. 75% of the story took place in one day.
It was a fun and quick read, but I can't say it was a good mystery, You can easily see 70% of the links in the first quarter of the book. Characters didn't make sense most of the times, everyone was so unpredictable, I couldn't get the idea why these three were best friends in the first place. The writing was irritating, things were repetitive. And why the hell you'll call a person by using IT?
Absolutely fucking horrible. I bought it because of the summary, it was simple and it seemed interesting so why the fuck not. BUT LET ME TELL YOU WHY THE FUCK NOT. It's the 7th page of the book. 7th. And the guy sees a little tiny bit of neck and he immediately turns into a sex deprived man with shit like "I wOnDeR hOw It WoUlD fEeL tO kIsS tHaT nEcK" LIKE BITCH??????? WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK YOU SAW A BIT OF NECK CHILL MA GUY. The idea is good and it could be executed well but this woman took a lot of cocaine to write this and publish it. I've read the boy in the striped pyjamas and even that Hitler fantasy shit was better than this. I want an honest answer, what was going through Maren Stoffels head when writing this? Was it air? Cause it sure seems like it. The potential is absolutely there but then you take it and then you throw it under a train, let a bear maul it proceed to take a shit on it and to top it all off you slap a piss kink on it. That pissing scene had absolutely no right to happen. None. This book is the reason why some people started destroying books in massive amounts.
I read this book as a ebook on a free app. It is a book full of tensity and it is a nice book to read. You just don't want to put it down, but just finish it. I just got to know how this story ends. The book is a story about a escaperoom. I like escaperooms, so there for I want to read this book. What if somebody locks you up in a escaperoom and never want to let you go. What would you do? Four people are locked down in a escaperoom and they start to realize that they are trapped. The book tells the story about those four people, but also from the person who locked them in the escaperoom. The end is really good, didn't see that one comming, because all four people had their secrets, but the perpetrator is after just one of them. During the book you, as a reader, get hints. Some of the hints are hidden and you understand them when you finished the book. Nice book, good story. My 11 year old daughter is now reading it and I can't wait to find out how she experienced this story.
I enjoyed Fright Night by this author, and really wanted to enjoy this story as well. But, the story line was just a bit too disjointed for me. I expected a creepy story about an escape room, but this book ended up being a mish-mash of slasher/crazy killer, teen angst, and disintegration of friendships. For me, the plot line suffered from identity crisis....is it a horror story? or a coming of age reality tale where friends reveal their sexuality, secrets and real feelings? Just too confusing to have a story that tries to do both.
The confusion over where the plot was going made the twists in the story line just not work for me.
I'm definitely going to try more by this author. I liked Fright Night, and she is a skilled writer. This particular story was just not for me.
Dit boek hield me in z'n greep.
The story is told in a very unique manner, as each "chapter" (if you can even call it that) takes place from a different character's perspective. Two guys and two girls end up at an escape room and soon enough realize that they're not just trying to escape - they're trying to survive. This was surprisingly a ton of fun. The perspective switching between all the main characters, yet remaining in first-person the entire way through makes for an exciting and unique reading experience. This was a lot better than the other "Underlined" horror book I read, and this book makes me look forward to checking out more from this author. Let's not get carried away or anything, but it's safe to say that Underlined is the new Point Horror, and Maren Stoffels is the new Sinclair Smith. I'm kidding (for now, anyway), but seriously, I would recommend this to fans of young-adult horror and if you're a fan of escape rooms you'll probably appreciate this.
Different type of action/adventure/horror/mystery, all wrapped in one. Those who enjoy Escape Rooms will like this book. Easy to read, 4 POV; 2 girls/2 guys. Writer leaves you guessing until almost the end. Lots of red-herrings. The story reminded me of the Storyline of the movie Saw, without the gore. It's almost a bait and switch type of story. Elements of self-discovery, self-esteem issues, along with LGBTQ storyline.
3/5 Honestly, I came into this book expecting to hate it and I'm pleased to say that this book wasn't horrible. Sure it had some issues that I didn't enjoy and I feel like the author could've added more to the plot by making the story longer and adding more details. I honestly think that if the author ended up making this 300+ pages then this story could've potentially been 4 or 5 stars but instead, we got 200 pages and the whole thing felt a little rushed in my opinion, and to be truthful I still don't understand half of the shit that went down during this book. Also, this detail isn't even that important but this book started with an Eminem quote which was the main reason I thought this book was going to be horrendous.
World Description- Alissa, Miles, Sky, and Mint are excited to go and have a night of fun at an escape room. The rules are simple choose their game. Get locked in a room for 60 minutes find the clues and solve the puzzles to get out. But what happens when the game master decides that they have no intentions of letting the teens go? Just be ready to see all hell break loose when secrets start getting revealed one by one. Will any of these friends still trust each other by the end of the night?
Characters-
Mint- Honestly Mint was a boring character. Her only plotline was being jealous of her friend and being insecure. Once again I feel like I would've been able to relate to her character a lot more if the book was longer and we got more insight into her.
Sky- He was a bit creepy at the beginning of the book and I never felt that interested in his character though I do have to say that the author caught me off guard when his secret was revealed. I wish that we got more of his pov where he wasn't talking about how he was in love with someone. Like come on can't he have something more to his personality than just being in love?
Alissa- I know I keep saying it but these characters could've been so much better if the author just made this book longer. I have so many questions about this character that were left unanswered or we only got a short answer. I'm still so curious about what happened with her at the end of the book and how bad her dad's trauma was. I would've also loved to learn more about the documentary she did about her dad. It seemed so important to her yet he got the bare minimum details about it.
Miles- He had such good potential on becoming a much more sinister character than what the author delivered and I feel so robbed of what his character wasn't. I would've loved for more details about his life and his ex-girlfriend but once again the author gives the bare minimum and leaves you thirsting for more than what you get.
Caitlin- All I have to say is that I hope she gets the world and bless her sweetheart. I loved her so much and she was such a kind and sweet girl and didn't deserve what Sky did to her.
Cleo- Same thing with Miles we should've gotten so much more of this character. She was by far the most intriguing yet got so little time despite being such an important role in the story. I'm so bitter over not getting any more of her character because I loved hearing about her and getting a look into her head.
Overall Thoughts- This wasn't horrible but it wasn't the best either but if you're looking for a quick read that will hopefully get you out of a reading slump then this is your book.
*** Note: I received e-copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks to PRHGlobal for free copy. ***
Stars - 3.5
Escape Room was interesting teen thriller that revolved four friends and the escape room game they signed up going wrong. It was about revenge, mental illness, self-discovery, self-esteem issue, and friendship.
Writing was gripping, super easy, to the point. There was plot fillers or lengthy character or setting description, which made it quick read. I finished this book in few hours. It was multiple first person narrative from alternative POV of Sky, Mint, Julie, Miles, and ‘x’.
I liked the elements of mental illness, PTSD, self-esteem issue, teen angst along with LGTBQ. I enjoyed how friendship was tested throughout the book.
It was easy to figure out who was the bad person and identity was revealed too early. I wish the book was a bit longer and both plot and characters had little more depth.
Overall, Escape Room was interesting, short and quick teen/YA thriller. It was like those books that you go along with, is no- brainer, and somewhat predictable but you still enjoy it.
I liked, the plot twist was really good but it was short so I didn't really get to connect with the characters !!! the novel was easy to follow along with and quick so it was a really good pallet cleanser!! <3
The audiobook is 4 hours long and I made it 30 minutes. The writing was forced and corny. The reviews for the book are more entertaining than the actual book!
