God-Level Knowledge Darts: Life Lessons from the Bronx

Rate this book
A wild, hilarious guide to life from the hosts of the hit late-night show Desus & Mero and the #1 podcast Bodega Boys

Desus & Mero have turned their Bronx-born friendship into a growing brand. And it's no surprise--tuning in to them is like listening to the funniest, smartest people you know dissect a topic and then light it on fire. Now they've written the most entertaining guide to life you'll ever read, in which all the important questions are asked: How do I talk to my kids about drugs if I do them too? How do I bet on sports? How should I behave in jail? How much is too much to spend on sneakers? Is porn really that bad for me?

The pair met in high school, and as they put it: "We want to share all we've learned, after years in the Bronx streets, with you: the people. So with a lifetime spent building up a plethora of information from trials and tribulations and a handful of misdemeanors, we decided to write this book--a sequel to the Bible, or maybe to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, depending on how big a nerd you are. Let this book be your North Star."

Not the typical book the Goodreads community flocks to, but Desus & Mero are becoming more and more mainstream as time goes on. I guess until they get all the way there though:

Trying to locate the Bodega Hive on Goodreads...

After this point I’ll just assume whoever is visiting this book’s Goodreads page is already familiar with the comedy duo Desus & Mero, so I won’t spend time explaining either of them or their unique communication style. I’m reading from an eARC I received pre-quarantine, so I can’t speak to the finished print copies, but Mero’s portions of the book are written ENTIRELY WITH CAPS-LOCK ON, just like his tweets. Desus uses normal syntax, but the font was actually significantly larger than the standard size. Perhaps the editor wanted their words to be more visually distinguishable? I’m not sure.

The book isn’t that long, with nine chapters plus a preface and introduction. The topics covered include things from drugs to relationships to toxic masculinity, and whatever else pops into either of their heads; there’s really no set rubric here. And if there was ever any doubt: this book is written 100% by Desus & Mero. I don’t know if I’ve ever read a nonfiction book written more thoroughly in the authors’ voices. I will say if you’ve never seen their show before, it might be a little jarring at first, but that’s all part of their charm.

The tone of God-Level Knowledge Darts is similar to a podcast, where each take turns, sometimes interrupting one another, discussing a general topic. I haven’t listened to the Bodega Boys podcast, but it feels very off the cuff. Mero is frequently high while writing (something he brings up multiple times), but that doesn’t take away from the conversation the two of them are having; it only enhances it. I kind of wish I had an audiobook copy narrated by the authors instead, but this was still an enjoyable read for me to take a break from some heavier ones.

If you’re a fan of theirs, you’ll be a fan of this book too. If you’re not, maybe check out clips from their Showtime show on YouTube and see for yourself. I’ll leave y’all with this quote from Dark Desus himself:

“So take that final breath, laugh a muffled, choking laugh, and as you pass out, let your final words be, ‘The brand is brolic.’”

Are you a Desus OR ARE YOU A MERO? Have you had 5,000 jobs? DID YOU ONCE FALL OUT OF A CAR WHILE ON HALLUCINOGENS? Do your aunties try to make you feel bad for not having kids? HAVE YOU EVER SOLD A GRIP OF CREST WHITE STRIPS YOU BOOSTED TO THE CORNER STORE? Are you a Carrie? ARE YOU HIGH RIGHT NOW? Do you ever get nervous?

The Brand is no longer strong.

Last week it was announced that the iconic comedy duo Desus and Mero were breaking up. Their Showtime show and their podcast would not be returning.

As sad as I was to hear that news, I wasn't surprised. I had felt this split coming. It reminded me of back when I was a teenager and my 2nd favorite couple Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson broke up(Beyonce and Jay Z are #1). I knew that it was coming but I was still sad that 2 people I had never and will never meet were getting divorced.

Desus and Mero's divorce just hits so hard. I've been rocking with them since Desus vs. Mero days and I followed them to the Bodega Boys, their Viceland show and eventually to Showtime(I mean I don't have Showtime because I'm not 80 years old but we all know how to watch cable without having cable *wink* wink*). There just isn't anyone in mainstream media like them. They have authenticity to them that Hollywood tends to beat out of everyone.

God - Level Knowledge Darts is basically The Bodega Boys podcast in written form. I can't imagine reading this book if you haven't listened to that podcast. Even watching their shows would not help you understand the inside jokes from the podcast. This book is only for The Bodega Hive and I loved every minute of it. Eventhough it made me sadder that I'll probably never get to enjoy The Art again.

I hope that they can find a way to fix their friendship, even if they never work together again. And I'll just have to remember the good times that Yesina, Michael Anthony and Judy provide me.

If you love Desus and Mero than you will love this book.

Everyone else will just be super confused and probably highly offended.

God-Level Knowledge Darts is hilarious, witty, and makes the Bodega Hive proud. I swear Desus and Mero be wildin' with this book. Each chapter is equally unique with Desus and Mero going back and forth on their views on topics like relationships, drugs, crime, and sports. If you are a fan of the entertaining and daring duo, you must read this book.

One of my favorite things about the book is that it reads as a regular conversation between the two. They are so down to earth and ballsy. They give real advice no matter how crazy it may be.

Be prepared to read in some CAPS TEXT because Mero is all about that life.

I give God-Level Knowledge Darts 5 stars. It's comical, entertaining, fresh, all while staying true to themselves. The Bodega Hive will eat this up no doubt!

This book is hella funny. I legit laughed out loud. The Bodega Boys are so smart and understand their audience and brand so well. I’m not wild about these types of books because the get redundant. It’s very good for what it is.

The brand is STRONGGGGG. God-Level Knowledge Darts: Life Lessons from the Bronx made me fall out my seat laughing more than once. Yo DESUS and Mero have always reminded me of my best friends and older brother.

I started reading this book and then recognized that yo it was gonna be wild hard to read because half of it is in caps to represent Mero who's use of 'My Guy' reminds me so much of my own dad and brother it's ridiculous and Desus and his Jamaican/Caribbean parents jokes, yooooo as a descendent I was dying. Especially when he said "do you have xyz money" in his mom's voice. I fell out. Somewhere in the first chapter I switched from reading this to inject the audiobook into my earholes and I don't regret it, not one bit.

The guys are giving you that full Bodega Boys flavour, meandering thoughts, hilarious commentary and all. I enjoyed the jock-type conversations around sports and drugs. However, I actually thought they were pretty insightful in terms of the dating information and their promotion of not being a fucking weirdo/creep to women. They talked about the importance of deading toxic masculinity and not being one of those dudes who gets shot or ends up doing 10-20 years because someone called them a "pussy". That's important advice. They really amplified the fact that people should read more and educate themselves more because they're right - you can never know something until you know it. Like for example, hood niggas and rural mans don't see/know/understand certain shit sometimes because they've never been exposed to certain terms in their daily life. Now there's no excuse in these times for being a bigot, or not trying to learn/understand some shit because we all have google... but in reality sometimes you don't know certain things until you know it and we all have to try to keep up with the times and be inclusive. I loved that about this book. That they took it upon themselves to share that knowledge with the hive.

It's funny because this book is definitely geared towards men, in my opinion. You know that they were talking to their male audience, but as a woman I still enjoyed the comedy and found it interesting. I didn't realize how much I loved hearing Mero talk about his kids and the type of washed life he enjoys with his wife as an elder millennial - joke is, he's not even an elder millennial because he's like 35. Sidebar: I def thought the dude kicked 40 in the head already but you learn something new everyday. I relate to Desus' issues with committing to anything but work, and he totally fuckboy'd out at some points which he doesn't hide and I also found relatable and understandable. This book definitely made me want some edibles. It also made me wanna call my brother and say what's up.

All in all, this was a hilarious read. The audiobook made it THAT much better. You get the full brolic effect to immerse yourself in. Pick it up.

definitely like 50% mailed-in cash grab, probably 50% written by staff, 100% do not care, the brand is infinity brolic. mero has a few legitimately profound mini-sermons about tolerance, why having dogs in an apartment is borderline animal cruelty, parenting

As a longtime Bodega Hive loyalist, it has been such a fun ride to see the come up from Twitter and the OG podcast to MTV then Viceland and selling out live shows and now Showtime and a big time book. God-Level Knowledge Darts might be the closest I ever get to a VIP hang with Desus & Mero (though I hope not. post-pandemic, midtown, come thru), and that's saying a lot for guys who make the Apollo feel like your homie's living room. It's everything you expect from their usual dynamic, the perfect two-hander that reads as a mix between the raunchiest 4am subway convos you've ever overheard/participated in and a digital era duologue by our fave succio Shakespeares.

The titular mention of the Bronx is not just a throwaway; the stories in the book are as much about the city that made them as about the guys themselves, and I know the brand is strong worldwide, but there's something that just hits different about reading them as a New Yorker. Here Mero & Desus claim their rightful thrones as two elder millennials dispensing life advice— while acknowledging all the ways their advice is actually hella problematic. The book is as hilarious, sharp, and packed full of pop culture references as everything they do but also a little more intimate and self-reflective than anything else I've heard from them. On top of their usual candor about the experience of trying to exist while black, they address emotional health and toxic masculinity, the perils of ethical consumption (esp when you suddenly got mad cash), and punching down in comedy. Don't worry, Mero still talks plenty about butts and the eating thereof. God-Level Knowledge Darts is the Bodega Boys greatest hits plus some deep cuts and a few new ones you haven't heard before but you'll for real love 'em. IYKYK, and this book is for you, and if you've never heard of Desus & Mero before (you just came out of a three-year coma), I can't think of a better place to start.

The two stars say more about me than the book. If you're cooler than I am, this may very well be for you, but the chapter I related to most was “On the Inevitability of Becoming Washed.”

This was truly a great book. I've seen a few of Desus and Mero shows and have always found them smart, funny, and interesting. God Level Knowledge Darts definitely didn't disappoint. It really pulled me in and held my attention throughout the book. Each chapter has the authors giving their very unique advice on handling important life situations like relationships, family, growing old to off color topics like drugs and surviving jail. I love how Desus and Mero can successfully mix pure comic silliness with real thought provoking social commentary. I can definitely say this is the first book I've ever read with this format which is kind of free form, Desus and Mero switch back and forth and even literally interrupt each other in their writing, but it works so well because it feels like a real conversation. There were several instances where I literally laughed out loud but also times where I was really moved by how insightful the authors were. Mero's statement that "romance is knowing each other and knowing how to make sacrifices to support each other when necessary," is so simple yet so brilliant. There are tons of great jokes but also real moments of insight when talking about things like rape culture (Mero's declaration that "an unsolicited dick pic is violence"), homophobia, the prison industrial complex, and poverty. They addressed hard hitting topics like food insecurity with comedic flair inside chapters with titles like "Survival of the Brokest." The concept of this book is truly original and it was very well executed. I didn't want to put the book down and got some very odd looks when I couldn't contain my laughter in public places. Overall this was a very enjoyable read and I look forward to reading more from Desus and Mero in the future.

I laughed my ass off and did not want it to end. You can hear Desus & MERO in your head as you read, with darts on darts on on darts on every page. Witty, observant, and sharp as hell. No one can weave the wild spread of the zeitgeist together like these two and distill it into advice at the same time. The Brand is forever strong.

I haven’t snaughled (Laugh so hard you snort) while reading a book in such a long time. Desus and Mero have blessed us adults with a gem. This book talks about everything we think of silently, but out loud (I’m over with tears in my eyes, because I’m laughing so hard😂🤣). These guys hold nothing back, the topics are edgy but the advice is filled with heart. Drug usage, having kids and dating when you’re broke are the just a few things these guys talk about, trust me, their advance and personal experiences will have you rolling!⁣

If you are in need of a quick pick me up, then I highly recommend this book. Many thanks to Random House for this gifted copy.

I like Desus and Mero, but it took me FOREVER to read this book. Maybe it was the design (HALF IN ALL CAPS)? Or maybe their banter and fun BS works on a podcast or cable but not in a book? Maybe I'm just washed? Either way, there was some good life advice in here, but it was a chore to find it.

I'm a big Desus & Mero fan (I watch their show every Sunday/Thursday AND the extended cuts on YouTube). This book was definitely funny but it was a bit forgettable.

I liked the parts of the book that were anecdotes from their earlier lives, but I think generally that if you're only in your late 30s (like they are), I am skeptical of your credibility to give sound life advice.

By the way, I went to their New England virtual book tour and had a blast (it was essentially 200+ of us Zooming with them; Mero talked about waking up early that day to go apple picking with his family, very cute). Love these guys!!

I can’t remember exactly when I became familiar with Desus Nice (Daniel Baker) and The Kid Mero (Joel Martinez) but they became steady rotation in my household after they appeared on The Breakfast Club, a nationally syndicated radio program featuring DJ Envy, Angela Yee, and Charlamagne the God. Their interview came shortly after Envy’s appearance, along with his wife, on another talk show, The Real, discussing Envy’s affair.

Of course Desus and Mero clowned Envy - that's what they do.

When the duo appeared on The Breakfast Club, Envy, after asking for an apology, subsequently stormed out of the interview.

Shots fired!

By watching Desus and Mero on their eponymous program (Showtime), you get a taste of their humor on everything. It was only natural to expand their horizons in book form.

In the chapter titled "Relationships and Sh*t Like That," Desus opines "Don't get a partner just because you think you'll make cute babies, because the devil will hear you and curse you with a little ugmug that you will find attractive but about whom other people will say things like "When they grow into that head, we'll see."

Mero, who's married, continues (his entire text in caps), "Sure, my wife gets tight at me sometimes. Lemme tell you something, dog: no matter how good your mama's locrio de longaniza is, if you had to eat that sh*t every day forever, one random Tuesday you are gonna smack that muthaf*ckin plate across the table like the Denzel gif. I'm not saying you wanna smack your partner (that's abuse), but, man, if you don't wanna tell them a thing or two ... but still, chill, that's verbal abuse."

God-Level Knowledge Darts: Life Lessons from the Bronx (unfortunately, its original release date, 4/4/2020, was pushed back to 9/22 due to COVID), is a reflection the duo’s world view through their eyes, ears and the effervescence that is the Bronx.

Of the two, Desus tends to be the more straightforward, laid back yet always biting, and Mero always brings the heat.

They’re perfect together.

Yerrrr!!! Shout outs to the Bodega Hive!! I feel privileged to be one of the first to read an advanced copy of the literary art! I found myself laughing, out loud even... I found myself contemplating applying some of the problematic advice to my life... All jokes aside, I love how candid Mero is throughout the book, and felt such a genuine vibe that came through in his words. He writes like he talks, and it’s perfect! And of course the not as candid, but ever mysterious... Problematic Bae... still leaves me intrigued about his multifaceted mind. Desus Nice? Dark Desus? Yes. Both. And I love it. Before I met them at a meet and greet last year, I thought about what I would ask them. Since Showtime fame and money, I was curious if Desus ever copped the Red Octobers, but I failed to ask him. Honesty I was a little starstruck and forgot to ask! (Insert embarrassed face emoji) But, now I know! And I agree, you don’t want another run in with Richie!! This was a fun read, and now I can’t wait for the audiobook!

An advice book? I guess? If you want to read advice from two people that no rational person should be seeking advice from. Filled with lots of terrible advice. For people that would never get hold of this book in the first place. At first I thought this was a humor book. But not much was funny to me. Then I thought these two people might actually be trying to give legit advice. But it was terrible advice. So I'm back to thinking it's just a non-funny humor book.

Phenomenal. Wild snippets of thoughts from Desus and Mero on topics like drugs, masculinity, kids, crime, washedness, and everything in-between. Long-time fans and members of the Bodega Hive will have a ton of fun reading this; the sucio boys bring the same incredible energy to their writing as they do to their show and podcast. Highly recommend.
