This series feels completely different than it did at the beginning! This took a total turn!

description

But finally we got answers!

SPOILERS >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Honestly, I was a little worried about how CJ Archer was going to pull this together. Where did everyone come from? But I really enjoyed what she did. Having them all come from a prison? Loved it! And I didn't see it happening. However, the ending I did. I knew that somehow Dane was going to be the lost royalty to Freedland. It was mentioned too much in the past book and you knew that one of the royal family members had to have survived. I have some thoughts about how I think things will end, but it will be fun to see how Archer ends it.

Finally, the story is moving AND damn is it good! I mean, there are a few things that were obviously going to happen, BUT a tad different than expected! Josie and Dane...Make my heart pitter patter!! Eric, Kitty...so hysterical! I can't believe there is only one book left!

So much to unpack with this gem! Dane learns about himself and his past. Discovers family with ulterior motives and learns why he was imprisoned. Was his imprisonment justified? Could he really be the heir to two kingdoms?? What does that mean for his and Josie’s relationship? Will he survive the assassination attempts? Will he escape before he is caught and returned to prison? These answers to these questions and so many more are answered in this book! This is a fast paced read filled with treachery and romance!

3.0 - 3.5 ***

This started out as a good continuation of the series. Josie and Dane are getting closer to having a real romantic relationship but Dane can't commit until he learns more about his past. I thought the story dragged on. Some old characters reappeared just enough for a cameo and to cause some trouble then they're gone. IMO, it didn't add to the plot or story.

Goodness!

This author can write a cliffhanger like no other! I was lucky enough to stumble upon her & soon I had read all of the books she had written. When the first After the Rift book came out, I had to give it a go. I read the first book, as well as the subsequent books, within hours of them downloading to my tablet! I thought about the story for weeks after reading, the cliffhanger was so good, I became invested in the characters, & I simply NEEDED to know how everything would play out!

C. J. Archer has woven a tale of mystery, magic, and romance that places all others in genre behind! Her characters grab you & you become invested in their lives, their challenges, and their worries. The mysteries within these books, keep you thinking & wondering how things will be solved. The romance will make you bite your lip or groan aloud. This book is so very good. The writing is superb. I love that I surmise incorrectly & appreciate the twists. These are books that will engage your mind because you simply will not be able to stop thinking about what happens next, or what was just revealed & wondering how you didn't see it coming!

Start with After the Rift, The Palace of Lost Memories because you will want every clue, twist, and turn available to you. Those who are good in these books are not perfect; those who are bad in these books are villainous; those who keep getting up to fight another battle are true heros. Do yourself a favor and buy these books, you will not regret reading them over & over! Highly recommended.

Meh. I won’t be reading the next and final installment. Everything is same old, same old with a dash of searching for answers and revelations. The series is way too long and I’m no longer invested.

Even though I listened to book four before the pandemic, it was really easy to get re-immersed in the world and the story. I think although this one kind of meandered in parts, it gave a lot of answers, even if the reveal of who Dane actually is was foreshadowed perhaps a bit too much. It'll be interesting to see how C.J. Archer wraps everything up in the next book (which I won't take 18 months to get to).

Book 5 of After the Rift series. Should be read in order. The journey for answers continues. Sometimes answers can surprise you. This fast paced adventure is full of danger. While your heart is engaged with the main characters. It was so good I couldn't put it down.

This book was great. CJ is a great storyteller. It gets a minuspoint for the pacing. But I am used to her writingstyle by now and I read(or listen) quite fast. Very curious about the last book.

I enjoyed this book /unfolding adventure very much I found it to be exhilarating, fast paced and totally captivating, which involves some relationships taking a few steps forward, finally, a few plot twists, not to mention edge of your seat moments, and of course the cliffhanger. There is a fair bit of drama in this book but it’s not drama for drama sake, it all has its purpose and helps lead the story on at it’s fast pace.
The aspects that make this an enjoyable read for me is the sense of place I get. I really feel that I’m travelling with this group of people and experiencing what they are experiencing, the places they visit, sights, sound, smells, taste almost.
Needless to say there is a fair bit to digest but it flows so well that reading didn’t feel like a fact finding mission, but a graceful unfolding whereby I could start to make a few of my own speculations which had a little bit of weight behind them, whether they pan out is another story. Things are starting to consolidate and I can’t help but feel that the next and final book is going to raise the roof and probably blow everyone’s, especially my, speculations right out of the water.

4.6 stars!
This installment was a game changer. We finally find out where the palace staff are from, as well as a shift in not only location but also the overall tone as well. They've stopped pulling their punches, and I'm here for it. Now... if only people would stop getting arrested every time they turn a corner. 🙄

While still an intriguing story, I guessed who everyone was (with the exception of Balthazar) way back in the second book. The plot did progress quite a bit which is a plus.

The reason I have lowered my rating so much is because the plot was/is predictable. Also, the romance between Dane and Josie is so YA! I wasn’t expecting it to be with all the talk of Erik’s “c*ck” and the frequent threats of rape.

There is this huge build up to when Dane and Josie finally give in to their desires (it took 5 books!!!) and it fell flat. There was a more detailed description of Josie being fondled and once again almost raped by Xavier Deerhorn. I don’t like raunchy romance, but I was hoping for more than what happened here. Chaste kisses and then a cut eluding to what happened. Very disappointing.

I’m pretty sick of Josie being kidnapped, Dane and/or Josie being arrested, and then nobody kills the “bad guys”. Which allows them to come right back and do it again. I really liked Josie in the first few books but she’s so willing to do anything to save Dane, but then so reluctant to be forward about her feelings. It drives me a little insane.

Now we’re going to have this whole “Dane needs to do his duty and be honorable, therefore marry Laylana” (not sure I spelled that right, I’m listening to the audiobooks). I really hope the last book isn’t centered around this ridiculous conflict. Guess I’ll find out…

Soooo, I honestly have difficulty reviewing this book. I really like this authors work, but she tends to draw out the plot and this book felt very drawn out. It wasn’t bad, but not much happened and the things that happened could have been wrapped up much quicker.

The main events are that some of the crew get recognised. Which is great (and not, ergo the cliffhanger), cause we finally get somewhere. Dane getting arrested is actually a really small part of it all. The other main event is Dane and Josie finally getting their sh*t together (and not, evil cliffhanger). The most interesting thing happening was actually right at the end and then it was over. I felt like that could have been the focus of this book. I am pretty sure it will be resolved quickly in the next book, cause I think it will be the last of this series.

I wanna mention how well C.J. Archer is portraying characters. They are very real and you quickly feel a connection, even to the side characters.

Anyway, I enjoyed it overall and still love the series. It was just a bit weaker than the previous books.

There is no explicit content.

3.50 / 4 Stars

**HOOPLA Audio**

MC's: Josie and Dane (Not referred to as Hammer or Captain as much as before.)

In The Prison of Buried Hopes we find out about some of the members of the palace and where they came from, and how they ended up in prison. There's a lot of info gathering in this storyline and because of it I've rated the story as-a-whole higher then I really want to. I'm firm on a 3.50, but GR won't let me rate half points.

Here's why I'm torn.

Less TSTL moments on Josie's part, but that has a lot to do with her being part of a group most of the story. Then again, even the guys let their guard down way too many times...even to the point Dane is stabbed. I don't understand why these characters aren't more hyper vigilant. Then they go to Dane's mother's house, knowing that people around know who they are and don't think maybe those that have betrayed Dane before are still in town. 🙄🙄🙄 All this TSTL is just...🤦🏻‍♀️...sigh.

One more book to go....hope the conclusion is worth it.

This book had a lot more action story development then previous installments of the series. So if you made it this far in After the Rift, you won’t be disappointed. In fact, it will likely be your favorite. I’m not sure this series needed 5 books to get to this point. Now, we are told book 6 will be the last and I worry it will be rushed to tie everything up.

Ending with a cliff hanger is always a bit of a disappointment for me. That said, it seemed to work for this particular book. I didn’t have my usual reaction of wanting to throw the book across the room at the ending. I wasn’t even surprised. We know there is another book, there is even a description out for it. So, at least, some things we are certain will be resolved. I just hope that no favorite side characters die in the process.

Just as I had with Prison, I’ve gone ahead and preordered Return. Looks like I only have 6 weeks to wait.

The 5th instalment in the “After The Rift” series by C J Archer sees Josie, Dane and the rest of the gang travelling towards Freedland, in an effort to get some answers, find out the truth about their pasts and get their memories back.

On the way, they end up staying in Merrin Fahl, twin cities, on route to Freedland, but end up going into hiding, when they find that they are being followed.

During the course of their visit, a fight breaks out and Dane ends up in prison, charged with murder for a crime he didn’t commit.

In an effort to get Dane free from prison, Josie promises the King the gem and one of the wishes, neither of which she has!

As the plot continues, we finally find out what happened to each of the characters before they came to the palace and who they were in the past.

The biggest surprise coming at the end of the book!

I enjoyed this book a lot more than the previous one, and it is certainly picking up the pace as it heads for the final instalment next month.

Several of the palace workers and two village girls set off to see if anyone will recognize them. The travel the Fist and meet unexpected challenges as they seek a way to get their memories back. The questions is whether they are prepared for the answers?

This is the fourth book in the After the Rift series and is just as amazing as all the other ones. The characters are interesting, somewhat quirky and definitely have both positive and negative attributes. The storyline flows quickly and smoothly filled with action, adventure, unexpected turns and surprising twist that have you at the edge of your seat. I look forward to the next book and what happens to these charismatic and engaging characters.

Finally the action is picking up and the plot moving forward, in Book 5 of the After the Rift series. Our favorite characters head out on an adventure to discover the palace guards’ pasts. Protagonist Josie and her bestie Meg and, most unexpectedly, duchess Kitty join Dane, Max, Quentin, Theodore, and Balthazar on their rough journey.

Their route takes them from temple to palace to mountain pass, to grimy seaport, to prison mine, to underground hideaway. And for one unfortunate (or perhaps unwise one), to prison. The men learn more about themselves and the circumstances in which they were magically recreated as palace guards with no memory of their pasts. A few romances develop.

And yes, the big reveal for Dane. Most readers will have seen this one coming for some time.

FINALLY SOME CLARITY AND CLOSURE to many many questions that we have all had through this series...we are finally one step closer to knowing who everyone is and where they came from! What a great next step for the story and the characters as they learn with us who they were and some of the things that have happened in the past.

This is a great connector novel and cliff hanger for the last book to come. I could not put it down and I am happy that we have reached some answers since the whole start to this series has all been unending questions. I also like the travel aspect of this novel and how much of the land and area we get to know in this book.

Excited to read the next and last part of this series!

So many things were happening in this!! Just when Dane chooses Josie everything changes!! Sigh... this was absolutely unputdownable!! The revelations in this are draw dropping and there were many ah ha moments where prior theories were confirmed!! We're given some new characters to loathe! And the places they travel to are all vividly detailed! I loved every single second of this!! This is why C.J. Archer rules the realms!! She gives us these adventures that leave the reader begging for more! I cannot wait for the conclusion!!! I need the happy ending because these characters have gotten under my skin!!

This fifth book in the series provides more answers as to who the palace servants are (or were before they all lost their memories) and what they'll need to do to get those memories back than any of the previous instalments in the series. These revelations added to the constant challenges being thrown at the characters make for a fairly action packed story. There are plenty of twists and turns, some were fairly easy to see coming while others were quite unexpected. The book ends on a cliffhanger which I suspect sets up the events of the sixth and final book to head in certain directions which promise a lot of trouble for the main characters and some changes to the world around them.

This part of the story really had me hooked as we reach the pinnacle of this great adventure. Each character shines as we really get to know them and the twists and turns and surprises keep coming in every chapter.
C.J manages to entertain and fill us with emotions while manoeuvring these characters through their emotionally heart-wrenching stories, as they try to discover their past.
You'll find yourself turning the pages as fast as you can as we move towards the final book in this grippingly addictive series.
C.J cleverly sets you up for the final instalment and I for one cannot wait to see how this ends.

This series gets better with each instalment.

The action and mystery surrounding Dane, Erik, Max, Josie and Co keeps getting better with each book. Still on the search for answers to their memory losses and background we see this little group take on more than just a hostile countryside.
This is to be read as part of an ongoing storyline, so really you need to start at the beginning, but you won't be disappointed.

It all happened so quickly, the book arrived in my kindle and it was devoured fast! Thankfully not a long wait for the final book in July.

Josie, Dane and the others are still searching for their lost memories...but it isn't as easy as it seems and some find out things about themselves they may rather have not known. All things come to a head in Freedland where a couple of bombshells are dropped...then the book ended!

I saw hints of what was coming, but not sure how they will get out of this.

Thrilling.

I don’t know how long I’ve waited for this book, but I’m so glad it’s fondly out and the ending is only a couple of months away. C.J. Archer does not disappoint. The book follows the excitement and thrill of this series. It is magical. I completely live the series and I can’t wait for the last book to see how the author brings it all together at the end. It is a series I definitely would recommend to anybody and everybody. Love, love, love.

All my hopes were fulfilled

Such an enjoyable addition to the series. The characters I have come to love are finally getting some answers to fill in their missing memories. But in this series nothing is simple and straightforward. Lots of fun twists and turns that beg for answers in the newly released final installment. Thankfully I can start devouring the next book because this book left me hungry for more answers!

Formulaic C.J. Archer. Is it me, or does Josie get more annoying as the books progress? It is as if "love" addles her mind, causing her to become reckless. Promising wishes and gems she doesn't have, thinking she's useful by tossing herself in the fray. Not realizing that she is a liability and insisting on being inside the fray. Luckily, the adventure that the group proceeds on is interesting, so I can overlook Josie's love-addled lack of logic.

Wow. At last some answers. There's still fighting and plotting. But we meet old friends of several characters and learn who Captain Hammer really is, and why he's known as Hammer instead of Dale. We visit the prison where several of the palace staff knew each other before they were whisked off, memoryless, to the palace. So they can even start back toward the palace, so everything can be wrapped up in book 6.

Things really heat up in the fifth installment of After the Rift series. More travel, more people finding out who they were, including where they were taken from. A series of events reveals Dane is the grandson of the disposed king of Freedland and is engaged to be married. Of course he found out after him and Josie revealed their true feelings for each other. At the end Dane was arrested. They have the gem but not the wishes.
